Poor Things, Oppenheimer and Saltburn won Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) Awards in the categories for fantasy, period and contemporary live action features, respectively, at the 28th Adg Awards, which were handed out Saturday at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood.
Poor Things and Oppenheimer are additionally nominated for the Oscar in production design, alongside Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon, which were also Adg nominated in their respective categories.
Over the past five years, the winner of the Adg’s period film prize has gone on to win the Oscar for production design twice: In 2020, for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and in 2021, for Mank. During that time, the production design Oscar went to the winner of the fantasy category twice, in 2019, for Black Panther, and 2022, for Dune. Production design Oscar nominees “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” “Napoleon” all competed for the 28th Art Directors Guild Awards February 10 at Ovation Hollywood’s Ray Dolby Ballroom. “Poor Things” prevailed over “Barbie” for fantasy, and is now in the driver’s seat to win the Oscar. Throughout the season, it has been a race between these two big feminist films constructed around rebirth and unconventional world-building.
Meanwhile, “Oppenheimer” took period honors over “Asteroid City,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Napoleon.” Contemporary winner “Saltburn,” though, is not in the Oscar running. The animated feature winner was “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
The TV winners for one-hour period, fantasy, and contemporary were “The Great,” “The Last of Us,” and “Succession.” Movie or limited series went to “Beef,” and the half-hour series winner was “Reservation Dogs.”

“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” were among the winners at the 28th Annual Art Director’s Guild Awards which took place in Hollywood on Saturday evening.
Hosted by Max Greenfield, the Adg Awards celebrated outstanding production design in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, animated features and music videos.
“Poor Things” production designers Shona Heath and James Price drew visual references ranging from the paintings of French futurist Albert Robida to Francis Ford Coppola’s “Dracula” to build Yorgos Lanthimos’ extraordinary sets.
In “Oppenheimer,” Ruth De Jong built Los Alamos from the ground up. But her most challenging task came when she had to build the Oval Office for the film’s third act. Working with supervising art director, Samantha Englander, the two had floated the idea of finding a pre-existing build of the Oval Office. They looked no further than HBO’s beloved political satire “Veep.” Not only was “Veep...

While recently scrolling Twitter, an interesting anecdote came to my attention. In the fabled George Lucas outline for a Star Wars sequel trilogy, a treatment which the filmmaker shared with the Walt Disney Company when he sold Lucasfilm for $4 billion, Lucas apparently had a strange vision for Luke Skywalker: He wanted the older version of Skywalker to be like a character in a movie Lucas almost made before Star Wars. He wanted him to be, in essence, Marlon Brando’s Col. Kurtz from Apocalypse Now, right down to the bald head and rambling gibberish.
This detail is not new. In fact, Pablo Hidalgo first confirmed the information in Star Wars: Fascinating Facts (2020). In that book (via Total Film/GamesRadar+), Hidalgo wrote, “Although Luke Skywalker only barely appears in The Force Awakens, the concept artists had a lot to imagine based on the fragments of the story they were hearing as it developed.

Jon Favreau's "Star Wars" series "The Mandalorian," which debuted in 2019, was the first live-action "Star Wars" TV series and is set only a few years after the events of "Return of the Jedi," but a few decades before the events of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Although the titular Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) is not the fan-favorite bounty hunter character of Boba Fett (who appeared to die in "Return of the Jedi"), the exploration of a similarly-helmeted character likely served to expand on Boba Fett's backstory by proxy. It wouldn't be until later that Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) would be revealed to have survived "Jedi," and get a TV series of his own.
The first season of "The Mandalorian" involved the transport of an alien infant belonging to the same gremlin-like species as Yoda. The Baby Yoda, named Grogu, became a marketing bonanza, and Grogu merch is now plentiful across all sci-fi collectibles outlets.

When it was first unveiled as an integral ingredient in "The Mandalorian," StageCraft made a lot of jaws drop. Developed by Industrial Light & Magic, the concept of a sound stage surrounded with dynamic, high-definition LED backgrounds -- a set-up referred to as the Volume -- was a modern-day answer to old-school matte paintings. It gives actors something to look at besides mind-numbing blue and green walls, functions dually as a light source that matches the needs of the scene, and can convincingly simulate the experience of flying a ship through the vastness of space. The "Star Wars" prequel trilogy in particular had been blasted by fans for its overuse of green screens; StageCraft seemed like the ultimate solution.
At this year's Star Wars Celebration, Doug Chiang -- veteran "Star Wars" production designer, and executive creative director of Lucasfilm -- enthused about the Volume's role in "Obi-Wan Kenobi" and "The Mandalorian...

Multiple heavyweight series return this spring, which will have a big impact on the 2023 Emmy craft races, particularly with the final seasons of “Succession,” “Barry,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Star Trek: Picard,” and possibly “Ted Lasso.” Plus, “The Mandalorian” is back and should continue its craft domination, while there are opportunities for improvement for new seasons of “Yellowjackets,” “The Great,” “Schmigadoon!,” and “Perry Mason.”
Before looking ahead at potential opportunities, it’s worth noting past Emmy performances.

Season 3 of Disney+’s “The Mandalorian” is a turning point in many ways, with a reunited Din Djarin/Mando (Pedro Pascal) and Grugu (Baby Yoda) potentially taking on greater responsibility to protect the scattered and divided Mandalorians. According to the series creator Jon Favreau, these higher stakes called for a larger visual scale, pushing production further beyond the limits of Ilm’s innovative virtual production tool: the StageCraft Volume.
More than anyone in Hollywood, Favreau was responsible for the earlier-than-expected adoption of on-set virtual production when he made the bold choice to use StageCraft, or The Volume, as the principal mode of production for Season 1. While the Volume has dramatically improved and expanded its capabilities since Season 1, Favreau acknowledged the need to be more strategic about when and how to use it.

In between his mega-hit “Back to the Future” sequels and his Oscar juggernaut crowdpleaser “Forrest Gump,” Robert Zemeckis directed the sublime black comedy “Death Becomes Her,” released to theaters 30 years ago on July 31, 1992. In a summer of mostly safe, audience-friendly comedies like “Sister Act” and “HouseSitter,” “Death Becomes Her” entered the marketplace an oddball piece of dark, absurdist humor that didn’t fit into a clear category. Let’s take a moment and reflect on the “Death Becomes Her” 30th anniversary.

“I think the longevity of [the films] is really key to this one character [Gizmo], who is essentially like a baby,” director Joe Dante recently told the San Francisco Chronicle of the star of his classic Gremlins films. “Which brings me, of course, to the subject of Baby Yoda, who is completely stolen and is just out-and-out copied. Shamelessly, I would think.”
It’s quite a charge, but the two cuddly creatures with extraordinary powers, big eyes and expressive ears do look a lot alike when seen side by side. However, the initial inspiration for The Mandalorian’s Grugu — Baby Yoda’s actual name — undoubtedly predates the first Gremlins, which came out in 1984. Yoda made his debut four years prior, as a seemingly impish little swamp creature who bugged Luke Skywalker while he was bogged down on Degobah.
Deadline has reached out to Disney+ and will add any comment we receive.

One of the things that makes “Star Wars” so special is its world-building. A mid-budget studio film with the ambition of the tentpole blockbusters it paved the way for, George Lucas’ 1977 original uses modest settings to suggest a vast and complicated universe. Intricately detailed spaceships that fill the screen, belying their humble origins as miniature models. The glossy tech and fascist uniformity of the Galactic Empire versus the slapped-together equipment and species-specific garb of the Rebel Alliance. A desert planet home to AI-scavenging nomads, interplanetary outlaws in off-the-rack monster masks cooling their heels in a dimly lit saloon, and a farm boy destined to bring balance to the galaxy.

For Hayden Christensen, time was a great ally when crafting his Darth Vader performance for Obi-Wan Kenobi.
In the Star Wars Disney+ miniseries, 10 years have passed since the last time Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi were face-to-face on Mustafar. In reality, 17 years have passed since Christensen and Ewan McGregor played opposite each other in their iconic sci-fi roles in Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith.
And it was that actual gap in time that allowed Christensen to bring “something different to the table” and better understand Vader and his emotions swirling when the former Jedi Master and Padawan spectacularly reconnect once more.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter prior to the final two episodes of the six-part Disney+ series, Christensen explored that lightsaber duel on Mapuzo and Vader’s disappointment in how weak Kenobi had become. The actor also looked back on the prequels,...

There are Star Wars experts, and then there's Doug Chiang. The Star Wars creative director has spent more than 25 years in a galaxy far, far away and recently worked as the production designer on Obi-Wan Kenobi—starring Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen—premiering May 27 on Disney+. We all know that the Galactic Empire has perpetrated some of the galaxy’s most heinous atrocities. The annihilation of Alderaan. The genocide on Geonosis. The abolition of Osha.
Oh, that last one doesn’t seem as bad? Have you ever considered how many deaths and injuries could have been prevented by the simple addition of handrails? The poor stormtroopers fighting Luke and Leia in the Death Star shaft. Darth Maul and his better half fading away in The Phantom Menace. Han Solo plummeting after reuniting with his son Ben. Sure, extenuating circumstances played into these events, but the lack of guardrails surely made things worse.
Like the lightsaber itself, handrails are elegant tools for a more civilized age, but they are largely missing from the Star Wars universe. Fans have long speculated on reasons for the design choice, but few ever expected a proper explanation for the missing handrails.

Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Disney+, for this edition we look at how costume designer Shawna Trpcic, production designers Andrew L. Jones and Doug Chiang, and directors of photography Matthew Jensen and Baz Idoine pushed the world-building of the Star Wars series “The Mandalorian” in its second season.
If there are two skills that define the crafts team assembled by series creator Jon Favreau, it’s how they simultaneously look to the past and the future in designing the story of the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal). Led by concept artwork by production designer Doug Chiang, who came up under George Lucas, the series is steeped in the philosophy of how to graphically tell story of new, far-off, fictional worlds.

Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian” returned for Season 2 on Disney+, boasting new and improved virtual production innovations, while introducing creatures such as the menacing Krayt Dragon and ice spiders. The tech highlight, though, was the launch of StageCraft 2.0, the virtual production game changer from Industrial Light & Magic. Offering a new in-house render engine called Helios, the immersive LED wall digital backlot at Manhattan Beach Studios in L.A. generated cooler-looking digital environments in real-time, and continued the illusion of being on location with interactive lighting and perspective-accurate camera tracking.
“Helios gave us higher resolution and more image fidelity,” said Ilm VFX supervisor Richard Bluff. “The assets that were going into the environments could not only be rendered in real-time on the wall, but could also be easily rendered in any one of our render engines that we use in post-production. This allowed a lot of flexibility on the back end.

David Fincher’s “Mank,” Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods,” and Pete Docter’s “Soul” were the big film winners at the 25th annual Art Directors Guild Awards Saturday evening, taking production design honors for period, fantasy, contemporary, and animated feature, respectively. Additionally, “The Mandalorian,” “Ozark,” and “The Queen’s Gambit” were among the TV winners at the ceremony, which bodes well for “The Mandalorian” and “The Queen’s Gambit’s” Emmy prospects in the craft category.
The annual awards fete the finest production design in movies, TV, commercials, music videos, and animated features in 12 categories.
The monochromatic “Mank” is the only film that took home an Adg award that is competing for Best Picture. Pixar’s “Soul” is the favorite for Best Animated Feature. Other Adg nominees included Oscar hopefuls “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”

“Mank,” “Tenet,” “Da 5 Bloods” and “Soul” have won the feature-film awards at the 25th annual Art Directors Guild Awards, which were handed out in a virtual ceremony on Saturday.
“Mank” won in the period-film category, the Adg category that most closely corresponds to the Oscar for Best Production Design. “Tenet” won in the fantasy category, “Da 5 Bloods” in the contemporary category and “Soul” in the animated category.
In the 14 years since the current Adg categories were established, the winner in the period category has gone on to win the Oscar for Best Production Design six times, the fantasy winner has taken the Oscar four times, and the contemporary winner has won the Oscar once. In all but three of those years, the Oscar has gone to one of the Adg winners.
“Mank” and “Tenet” are both nominated for the Best Production Design Oscar; “Da 5 Bloods” and “Soul” are not.

This is definitely the droid we've been looking for, if by droid you mean news on The Mandalorian. Back in April, Variety revealed that the Disney+ series had already begun preproduction on the third installment, less than six months after season two was announced!
Sources told Variety that series creator Jon Favreau has been "writing season three for a while," and that concepts for the next chapter have been in the works for a "few weeks," led by Lucasfilm vice president and executive creative director Doug Chiang. It's not surprising that the streamer would want to jump into the show's next installment, given the Star Wars spinoff has been universally well-received by fans and stars alike. When Jon Favreau set out to make The Mandalorian, the Star Wars franchise’s first-live-action series, he had a strong sense of the world he wanted to create: Intimate as well as grand, the series should harken to the vision of the original Star Wars trilogy, while taking the universe established by George Lucas in new and exciting directions.
“This was an opportunity to prune everything back to the beginnings again,” the executive producer said during Deadline’s virtual Contenders Television: The Nominees. “And having new characters allowed us to do that.”
The central character for Favreau would be Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), a lone Mandalorian bounty hunter who chases down criminals in the outer reaches of the galaxy. In pre-production, the creator looked back at Star Wars’ beginnings with A New Hope, intending to surround the character with elements of the genres that inspired Lucas to begin with, including samurai films and Westerns.

Before Palpatine got the chance to show off with his new Star Destroyers in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Kylo Ren’s First Order ruled the galaxy unopposed. But apparently, the Supreme Leader’s merciless legion could have been even more menacing than what we saw in the final film.
The last movie in the Skywalker Saga, despite all its shortcomings and fan service moments that backfired in Disney’s face, was spectacular to behold. New worlds, new creatures, and new designs for already established forces in the galaxy all helped turn J.J. Abrams’ pic from a mediocre misfire to an aesthetically pleasing experience throughout. One of these evolutions involved the First Order, who got a few upgrades since The Last Jedi. And no, we aren’t talking about the Jumptroopers that managed to baffle our heroes in the writers’ failed attempt to make the script more comic.

Doug Chiang is the Vice President and Creative Director of Lucasfilm. He’s an Oscar-winning designer who has worked on more iconic projects than you can imagine including “Death Becomes Her,” “Forest Gump,” “Rogue One” and five out of the last six “Star Wars” films. But when he heard that writer Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau were pitching a new “Star Wars” series almost two and a half years ago he had no idea how fast the project would proceed and that he’d end up one the credited production designers of “The Mandalorian.”

“I think Season 1 really only scratched the surface of what was possible. We keep talking with Jon [Favreau] and [production designer] Andrew Jones about what could be possible with this technology, and it’s very exciting. We certainly have not reached our limits, even after shooting Season 2.” — Richard Bluff
To craft an epic space Western on a TV budget, The Mandalorian eschewed location shoots and instead crafted a digital exterior volume on a soundstage.
The volume, made up of 2,200 Led screens in a 20x70ft circle, projected environments crafted from plates and digital assets, on Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4.
The video game engine, married with high resolution environment scans, had advanced far enough to project photorealistic worlds in real-time.
The nascent StageCraft technology relies on age-old principles of rear projection and camera perspective, given a cutting-edge, modern twist.
