The first opera singer to seriously concern himself with giving a
believably acted performance, in addition to a well-sung one. When he
became dissatisfied with his performances, he began to attend straight
dramatic plays to learn the art of acting. His approach revolutionized
acting in opera, and even today, although his style may appear
artficial to modern audiences, he is regarded as perhaps the greatest
operatic actor that has ever lived.
