Yesterday evening, the news broke that Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy is being eyed to helm Avengers 5. Marvel Studios must be pleased with the Merc with the Mouth's upcoming threequel, but the report also featured another major revelation.
Apparently, the movie - previously titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty - will feature upwards of 60 Marvel characters!
As you might have guessed, that got us thinking about who we'll see in Avengers 5. While Marvel Studios has already introduced hundreds of heroes and villains, not all of them would fit into this movie.
So, no, this isn't just a list of 60 MCU characters, it's our breakdown of who we believe would fit into the story as well as which corner of this shared world they hail from. There are bound to be some surprises and glaring omissions which upset some fans, but we think this is a pretty definitive list of exciting possibilities.

It has been over five years since Avengers: Endgame was first released. Many chapters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe have opened and closed since. However, there is no denying that a piece of their fans’ hearts went with the final minutes of the film. Many stories ended when the 2019 movie was released, and audiences were forced to say goodbye to several characters they grew up with.

Marvel’s upcoming Fantastic Four reboot has rightly generated hype considering the kind of updates that have come out thus far. While the characters were previously featured in the 20th Century Fox series, perhaps the most accurate depiction from the comics happened in 1994’s Fantastic Four: The Animated Series, as it featured multiple narratives taken straight from various traditional DC arcs.
The titular theory, which suggests that the upcoming movie might as well feature the same characters from the timeline seen in the animated offering makes sense on various fronts. Furthermore, it will also pave the way for the potential inclusion of the X-Men ‘97 characters in a future live-action movie.

Fans recently got their first look at Captain America’s love interest in Brave New World.
While Chris Evans always had a prominent love story to go alongside his MCU journey thanks to Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter, Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson hasn’t gotten that yet.
But that’s finally set to change in the franchise’s fourth film as the new Cap goes against both The Leader and Red Hulk.

Chris Evans first played Steve Rogers in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger and, after multiple appearances across the MCU (including in the Avengers and Spider-Man franchises), the actor finally bid farewell to the role in Avengers: Endgame.
Steve has been M.I.A. ever since, though his final fate still hasn't been revealed to us. However, with the Multiverse in play, there are endless possibilities regarding Captain America's return in Avengers: Secret Wars.
Over the weekend, it was reported that Evans is now a lock for that movie. While we anticipate him assembling alongside the other original six Avengers as the "classic" Cap, we'd bet on the actor playing a few different Variants as well.
Below, you'll find some of the most exciting, intriguing, and likely possibilities...

Only the hardest of hearts could have failed to be moved through Avengers: Endgame, especially through Chris Evans’ performance of them all. As much of a joyride as it felt because of those witty dialogues and scenes, it was also one of the most heartbreaking films in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, surpassing even Avengers: Infinity War in its battle of being a total tear-jerker.

When discussing MCU characters, our focus often gravitates towards the Avengers and prominent villains. However, the MCU owes much of its success to secondary characters whose roles significantly influence the storyline.
That’s why fans recently turned to Ranker to determine the top 10 most underrated characters in the MCU. While some may never regain the spotlight due to past events, others still hold the potential for greater recognition.

While he did appear in the recent ‘Secret Invasion,’ his storyline took a tragic turn. We discovered that his life was even more sorrowful than anticipated, with his daughter nearly joining the enemy ranks. Chris Evans played the role of Steve Rogers a.k.a Captain America in the MCU. For almost a decade, the actor entertained fans with his unrelenting optimism and good-old heroism in films such as Captain America: The First Avengers, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. The actor departed from the role after the end of his character arc in Endgame.
While fans want Evans to return to his role for the upcoming Avengers 5, the actor seems to be done with the character for a while. However, he did not rule out the possibility of returning to the MCU as a whole, as he expressed his desire to play Johnny Storm again. The actor had previously played the role in Fox’s Fantastic Four, which starred Jessica Alba.

Michael Douglas played Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man, in the MCU. Douglas has appeared in all three Ant-Man films, starting with the first one in 2015. However, he was not entirely happy working in the latest film in the trilogy since the filmmakers failed to implement his one wish for his character. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was a disaster at the box office and it is highly doubtful whether Douglas would appear in another MCU film.

Hayley Atwell’s Captain Carter has appeared in several Marvel projects. Most recently, she portrayed an alternative Captain America in ‘What If…?’ Season 2, featuring prominently in many episodes. Additionally, she appeared in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ as an Avenger and a founding member of the Illuminati. In 2018, she fought in the Infinity War and contributed to defeating Thanos in the Battle of Titan. Subsequently, she supported the decision to execute Doctor Strange for his use of the Darkhold, leading to a multiversal incursion.
Captain Carter also headlined her own successful show before the Disney+ era, titled ‘Agent Carter.’ In a recent Q&a session, Alex Perez confirmed that Captain Carter remains a significant part of the Marvel Multiverse. She is set to return in ‘What If…?’ Season 3 and reportedly will have a role in ‘Secret Wars,’ an upcoming Avengers project.

Hayley Atwell’s Captain Carter appeared in plenty of Marvel-based projects. There was a slew of questionable decisions made in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, many of which have been cited time and time again as the beginning of the fall for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, from turning Wanda into the villain to killing Earth 838’s Illuminati. However, a new theory proposed that from the ashes of the doomed sequel, Marvel’s next big hero could rise, and even make an appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Captain Britain
Given that a multiversal threat systematically slaughtered Earth 838’s Illuminati, it is without a doubt that this team would look to reassemble its numbers, with a focus on the threat at hand: Multiversal Incursions and Invasion. One character that would be great for the job, while also filling in for Captain Carter, would be Brian Braddock: Captain Britain.

Christopher Nolan recently proclaimed that the decision to hire Robert Downey Jr. to play Tony Stark in “Iron Man” was “one of the most consequential casting decisions that’s ever been made in the history of the movie business.”
By the end of this decade, the same might be said for the four actors who were just cast as the titular superheroes in Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four”: Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Like Downey, all of these actors have had recent experiences with big-budget productions — Pascal with “The Mandalorian” and “The Last of Us,” Kirby with the two most recent “Mission: Impossible” films, Quinn with “Stranger Things” and Moss-Bachrach with “Andor.” But, also like Downey, none of them have headlined their own studio action blockbuster before signing up with Marvel.

It turns out that Captain Carter changed a specific universe from What If…? Season 2 for the better in multiple ways, including bringing feminism to the forefront.
In Marvel’s animated series What If…?, there exists a multiversal Variant of Peggy Carter who received the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers.
This version of Peggy went on to become the superhero known as Captain Carter and helped turn the tide for the Allies in World War II before being flung into the 21st Century.

Marvel's "What If..." has employed a mix of reprisals and recasts from the movies. Captain Peggy Carter may have the super soldier serum, and Strange Supreme went down a darker path, but they're still played by Hayley Atwell and Benedict Cumberbatch like the originals. Tragically, T'Challa-as-Star-Lord also went down as Chadwick Boseman's final performance.
On the other hand: Mick Wingert fills in for Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Lake Bell plays Black Widow instead of Scarlett Johansson, and season 1 big bad Infinity Ultron was voiced by Ross Marquand, not James Spader.
"What If..." season 2 brings in two characters not seen in season 1, Hela (the villain of "Thor: Ragnarok") and Wenwu (the villain of "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings"), and pairs them up in episode 7: "What If... Captain America’s Intro Scene In The Avengers Was A Lot More Different Than The Final Cut! ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia; IMDb )
Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, is a righteous man who lost over sixty years of his life after he got frozen in the ice. Chris Evans portrayed the role with great conviction and made it a fan-favorite character. In 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger film’s end credit scene, we saw him wake up in the present era, and after that, in 2012, he brought in Nick Fury to fight against Loki and the Chitauri invasion. But there is a gap between the 2011 movie and the events of the 2012 MCU flick.

Season 2 of Disney+’s animated What If…? anthology answered nine new questions in Season 2, including: “What if Nebula joined the Nova Corps?” “What if Peter Quill attacked Earth’s Mightiest Heroes?” And, “What if the Avengers assembled in the year 1602?”
But one question that the showrunner for Seasons 1 and 2 also asked and answered will never see the light of day, seeing as it was a “very dark” episode involving your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

The second season of What If? has been dropped by Marvel Studios in a year that has seen both the rise and fall of the MCU. The final Guardians of the Galaxy and the second season of Loki were absolute triumphs, while the rest was pretty much a let down. I’m not even going to go into the Jonathan Major fiasco, but that must have hurt the MCU, and the future of this thing doesn’t look too bright. Considering all these, it was essential for Marvel to wrap up this year strong, and the good news is that What If? has been quite successful in doing that. With the anthology format, it was a given that some of the episodes would not be that good, while others might just be extraordinary. And that’s exactly how it went. We’re going to rank the new batch of episodes...

What If? Season 2, episode 9, wrapped up with a fierce battle between Captain Peggy Carter, our newly introduced Avenger, Kahhori, and the main antagonist of the multiverse war. This episode is once again a continuation of the previous episode, which ended with Peggy drinking at a bar while Dr. Strange Supreme approached her. Episode 9 opened with Peggy Carter conversing with Dr. Strange, who sought her help on something he was working on. To achieve that, Dr. Strange Supreme needed Carter to kill a villain from an alternate universe, so Peggy agreed to help him. Peggy demanded to portal back to her home universe in exchange for help, but after she accompanied Dr. Strange to his destination, she recognized who the real villain of this universe was.

What If? Season 2, episode 8, is the continuation of episode 5 of this season. In episode 5, we saw Captain Peggy Carter was portaled back to the year of 1602. This universe of the medieval Avengers was on the brink of destruction, so Scarlet Witch was assembling Avengers from different universes to save their existence, but the Watcher had made it clear that nothing could stop this universe from getting destroyed. Still, Captain Carter decided to remain in this universe and do whatever she could to protect it, but in this universe as well, she would eventually meet one significant person, called the forerunner, who would hold great importance in the multiverse of Avengers.

Why Did Thor Want To Capture Peggy Carter?
The episode opened with Loki playing the titular character from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, with a skull in his hand, while a giant portal opened in the sky, blinding everyone with the lights.

The Watcher doesn’t usually revisit a story from the multiverse because of the vastness of these alternative realities. But in Episode 5 of What If? season 2, the Watcher narrated the story of Peggy Carter, who became the super soldier Captain America, instead of Steve Rogers. In this parallel universe, Captain Peggy Carter once again crossed paths with her lover, Steve, whom she knew to have died in 1953. However, Steve turned out to be living inside the armor of a Hydra Stomper, under the control of someone more sinister and powerful. Let’s find out who was mind-controlling Steve to eliminate the Avengers.

Marvel's "What If...?" is creatively one of the best things to happen to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. More than big crossover movie events, more than the many, many TV shows expanding the world through new kinds of characters, it's "What If...?" that really fulfills the potential of the MCU. "Star Wars" didn't become such a massive and beloved franchise with the movies or the shows alone. It did so with the expanded universe of books, games, and comics exploring smaller, weirder aspects of the galaxy. "What If...?" season 1 wasn't perfect, and it still adhered too close to the formula of the McU's films, but it showed promise in how it unleashed the imagination of what was possible in the MCU.
Now, season 2 will attempt to build on that by telling more stories that aren't simply pulled from the McU's films. Take the brief trailer shots of what looks like an...

Potential "Deadpool 3" spoilers to follow.
In a time of great turmoil for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who better to come strolling in than the Merc With A Mouth himself? The big-screen iteration of Deadpool -- as played by Ryan Reynolds -- thrives on upending expectations for the superhero genre, like when "Deadpool 2" introduced a version of the famous mutant outlaw squad known as X-Force, only to immediately kill off the entire team in a comically violent fashion (save for Zazie Beetz's luck-powered Domino). A little chaos along those lines would surely do the MCU good at this juncture, allowing it to shake off its recent woes and work towards a better tomorrow.
For that to happen, however, Marvel Studios should probably do a little House (of Ideas) cleaning first. Enter "Deadpool 3," a three-quel that's gotten fans hyped ever since it was confirmed to bring Reynolds' Wade Wilson into the MCU.

There’s a whole roster of actors that went through the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far. Some of them became worldwide-known stars thanks to their MCU roles. One of them is Chris Evans, who rose to fame thanks to the role of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, which he played between 2011 and 2019. There's no shortage of emotional moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While a number of those instances are celebratory, there are just as many heartbreaking ones as well. Steve Rogers' goodbye to Peggy Carter in "Captain America: The First Avenger," Aunt May's demise courtesy of the Green Goblin, Angela Bassett's whole performance in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," and basically all of "Avengers: Endgame" come to mind.
In terms of consistently hitting you right in the feels, James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" series delivers each time. All you have to do is recall the quotes "We are Groot" and "He may have been your father, boy, but he wasn't your daddy," and you know exactly what I'm talking about. But as we prepare for the final chapter of the fan-favorite filmmaker's story about this lovable bunch of a-holes, Gunn recently shared that there are still some tear-inducing moments on the horizon.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is absolutely obsessed with Steve Rogers. It's been years since we last saw the star-spangled man disappear into the past, share a dance with Peggy Carter, and then reemerge as a Joe Biden lookalike. And even so, we've never really been rid of him. At first, it was just because we couldn't make sense of what his ending implied -- has Steve always been Peggy's mysterious husband? Did he disrupt the timeline by popping back to the past? Is he also a secret US President?! but even after Timeline-Gate was settled, Steve's presence has lingered. Chris Evans may not have plans to return, but the MCU still refuses to let the supersoldier go.
Since Steve quietly exited the present, his life has been celebrated via museum exhibits, a broadway musical, and — the wildest of them all — the addition of Cap's shield to New York's Statue of Liberty.
