He is considered to be one of the best Belarusian writers ever.
Swedish "Expressen" compared him with Dostoevsky and dubbed him "the last true prosaic writer of Europe."
For several years he lived in Finland. He left Belarus in disagreement with the politics of President Lukashenko.
