Atlanta police are on the hunt for a man who they believe is behind the back-to-back burglaries of “Ignition (Remix)” singer R. Kelly‘s two Georgia homes.
Johns Creek Police Department Captain Chris Byers tells People that a warrant is out for the arrest of Alfonso “Doc” Walker, a musician and former associate of Kelly’s who hired movers to clean out and sell off all of Kelly’s belongings under the guise that the hit-maker was moving his operations out of Atlanta.

It has been twenty years since the horrifically mutilated, murdered bodies of children Steve Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers were found in a creek in the middle of Robin Hood Hills in Arkansas. And thus started a saga that spanned nearly two decades, with the trials of the accused Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley Jr. and Jason Baldwin gaining national attention, which eventually turned to outrage. Chronicled in great detail via the 'Paradise Lost' trilogy of documentaries as well as Amy Berg's "West Of Memphis," the case of the West Memphis Three soon became one of justice denied, not only to the three young men, but also the victims whose real killer or killers is still unidentified. A controversial Alford Plea agreed to by the trio of boys in 2011 has effectively closed the case, and nearly every angle of the investigation from paths taken to those unexplored has been scrutinized.

What happened to eight-year-old Arkansas natives, Steve Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers is pure nightmare fuel. Sparing the ghoulish details, the three young friends went missing on May 5th, 1993. The following afternoon, an abandoned boy's sneaker was found floating in a creek in the Robin Hood Hills of West Memphis. This led police to the boys' naked and mutilated bodies in a ditch. It was a discovery that caused untold grief and outrage in the surrounding community. Suspicion soon fell on three teenagers, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley Jr. And this is the beginning of The Devil's Knot. Vulture has unveiled the first trailer for the film based on the non-fiction book Devil's Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three. With a screenplay by Scott Derrickson and Paul Harris Boardman, director Atom Egoyan looks to investigate the controversial trial that brought rumor, prejudice and...

Four highly publicized documentaries in, it should go without saying that the West Memphis Three ordeal has taken up its fair share of screentime. The necessity for a narrative feature is a questionable one, and despite the potential promise of Atom Egoyan’s Devil’s Knot, the film ultimately stands as a prime example why the story shouldn’t be adapted into a narrative feature – at least not a narrative feature this lazy and uninteresting as this one. Even with a cast that includes Reese Witherspoon, Colin Firth, Kevin Durand, Dane DeHaan, Bruce Greenwood, Amy Ryan, and Mireille Enos, Egoyan has delivered one of the worst big screen takes on a true story of this magnitude in quite some time, an eye-popping failure of both execution and emotion. Egoyan fails to engage with not only his audience but also the actual material he’s attempting to portray on screen, making Devil’s Knot one of the year...

#68. Atom Egoyan’s Devil’s Knot
Gist: What will certainly be served up by Egoyan as atmospherically cold, in 1993, in the small town and religious community of West Memphis, Arkansas, three eight-year-old boys – Stevie Branch (Jurgensmeyer), Christopher Byers (Spink), and Michael Moore (Boardman Jr.) – go missing from their neighborhood. After an extensive search, their bound and beaten bodies are found the next day. The community and the police department are convinced that the murders are the work of a satanic cult due to the violent and sexual natures of the crime. A month later, three teenagers – Damien Echols (Hamrick), Jason Baldwin (Meriwether), and Jessie Misskelley Jr. (Higgins) – are arrested after Misskelley confesses after several hours of interrogation. They are taken to trial where Baldwin and Misskelley are sentenced to life and Echols to death all while still claiming they’re innocent.
Prediction: Completed quite a while back, all signs point...

On June 3rd, 1993, three teenagers from West Memphis, Arkansas were arrested for the murders of three eight year old boys. Despite their innocence, and a complete lack of evidence, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley became targets for the police investigation, and eventually convicted for the brutal slayings of Christopher Byers, Steven Branch and Michael Moore.
18 years later, Echols, Baldwin, and Misskelley were finally released from prison. With his newly found freedom, Damien Echols (along with his wife Lorri Davis and supporters of the West Memphis Three) is determined to find the person behind the murders, and finally gain closure. Recently, at a small press conference in Beverly Hills, California, Wamg got the chance to speak with Damien Echols, his wife Lorri Davis, and Director Amy Berg about their new documentary that follows Damien’s fight to save his own life, and their search for the truth. Peter Jackson owns the box office right now with "The Hobbit: an Unexpected Journey," part one of his "Lord of the Rings" prelude.
With the magnificent documentary "West of Memphis," Jackson reveals the results of his own unexpected journey, from New Zealand to rural Arkansas, where he and an unwavering band of filmmakers, artists and other dissenters challenged the judicial system and won.
The case of the West Memphis Three – Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, imprisoned as teens in the 1993 murders of three Cub Scouts – has become widely known through the activism of A-list actors and musicians who took up the cause, along with three "Paradise Lost" documentaries that called the convictions into question.
After seeing that first "Paradise Lost" film in 2005, Jackson and wife Fran Walsh stepped in, financing their own investigation and enlisting director Amy Berg (the Academy Award-nominated "Deliver Us from Evil") to chronicle the...

West of Memphis, a powerful new Peter Jackson documentary, charts the ongoing fight for justice for three men wrongly convicted as child killers
After his release from prison, Damien Echols found the simplest things hardest. "For 18 years I hadn't walked without chains," he says, "so when I came out I would trip over my feet. It took time just to stop falling over the kerb." He is calling from New York, but still speaks with the accent of the American south – the place where until last year he spent his whole life, half of it jailed as a child killer.
The facts are a tangle of names and dates. On 6 May 1993, the naked, mutilated bodies of three eight-year-old boys – Stevie Branch, Michael Moore and Christopher Byers – were found in a water-filled ditch in the Bible belt town of West Memphis, Arkansas. By the following March, three local teenagers had been convicted of the crimes – Echols,...

The case was made famous by the 1996 HBO documentary “Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills,’ which showed that the men were convicted based on little evidence. When the documentary West of Memphis arrived at Sundance at the beginning of the year, the big news was the revelation of three new key witnesses that would prove the innocence of Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley. The three boys who essentially grew up in prison after being convicted of the 1993 murders of three eight-year-old boys – Christopher Byers, Steven Branch and Michael Moore - had their story of wrongful prosecution and tragic injustice told on the big screen, and it was frustrating, eye-opening and educational. Written and directed by Amy Berg, co-written by Billy McMillin and produced by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Damien Echols, West of Memphis is one of the more recent documentaries to explore the story of the West Memphis Three, a reference to the three teens (Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley) who were convicted of murdering 8-year-old boys Stevie Branch, Michael Moore and Christopher Byers in West Memphis, Arkansas in 1993 and the untold story behind the fight to bring the truth...

You might think after the three, highly acclaimed "Paradise Lost" documentaries from Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, not to mention the incredible amount of press around the case of the West Memphis Three, that the dramatic well has run dry on the subject. You would be wrong. Director Amy Berg revisits the case in the upcoming "West of Memphis," and this new trailer shows that the tale of justice not served continues to be a powerful one. Produced and presented by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, the film recaps the case of Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, three teenagers accused and found guilty of the heinous murders of Stevie Branch, Chris Byers and Michael Moore. But while their convictions were swift, it soon came to light that not only were they innocent, that there was much more to the investigation that prosecutors failed to look into, favoring expediency over getting to the truth.

West Of Memphis
Directed by Amy Berg
With Peter Jackson, Henry Rollins, Eddie Vedder
In 1993 the small town of West Memphis in Arkansas was rocked by the horrific triple murder of three eight year old boys. Stripped naked, trussed and bound, one of them had been subjected to a severe sexual assault before being beaten to near death, all three thrown in an abandoned ditch to die. The media seized upon the story and gleefully recounted the possibility of a satanic cult dimension to the atrocities, a fervour whipped up by the Arkansas state police and prosecutors with no single piece of evidence, other than the unusually brutal and horrific method of homicide and mutilation leading them to wildly unsubstantiated conclusions. The three boys – Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers – were last seen playing together at around 6:30pm on a cricket chirped early Summer evening, the police unearthed the bodies eighteen hours later.

Ever since the West Memphis Three were freed from prison last summer by entering Alford pleas, there have been a few different groups scrambling to retell their story on the big screen. Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky already followed the events quite exhaustively with their three Paradise Lost documentaries, but now that there is a definitive conclusion, at least three more adaptations have cropped up. Peter Jackson produced a documentary called West of Memphis that premiered at Sundance earlier this year, and there are now two competing fictional features in development: one directed by Atom Egoyan and the other apparently being produced by Johnny Depp. Egoyan's film, entitled The Devil's Knot, will likely be the first one out of the gate, and this week they have made a slew of casting announcements including their choices for the WM3 themselves. According to Variety, they finally locked down the key role of Damien Echols this week,...

Atom Egoyan‘s upcoming drama based on the real-life tragedy of the West Memphis 3, Devil’s Knot, has been quite slowly accumulating cast members, with news on each new member of the production trickling out over the course of many months. Reese Witherspoon joined the cast in December as Pam Hobbs, the mother of victim Stevie Branch, and Colin Firth signed on in February to play Ron Lax, a private eye who offered his services to the WM3 before their trial in 1993. While the project itself was announced all the way back in August, with such delicate material to cover, perhaps Egoyan is taking his time in picking his cast (what an idea!). Devil’s Knot has now added its third major cast member, and it is indeed a delicate role that is being filled – Deadline Seattle reports that The Killing star Mireille Enos will play Vicki Hutcheson in the film. Those...

Little Rock, Ark. — Todd Moore isn't sure whether he'll watch the Oscars this weekend, when a documentary about the murder of his son and two other Cub Scouts could win an Academy Award.
Moore and his ex-wife, Diana, believe "Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory" glorifies the three men convicted in the Arkansas' boys' deaths and asked the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to bar it from consideration for an Oscar. The academy refused, saying the film met the basic eligibility requirements and was being viewed and evaluated by members.
"It would not be possible for the Academy – its leadership, executives, or administration – to insert itself into this process without risking the integrity of this longstanding procedure and of the awards themselves," wrote Rob Epstein, who chairs the Documentary Branch Executive Committee, in the letter dated Dec. 13. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter this week.

Our sincere thanks to Andy Jurgensen for his review of Amy Berg's documentary and comparison to the documentary trilogy by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky. In 1994, Damian Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley were tried and convicted in a West Memphis court of the murder of Steven Branch, Christopher Byers and Michael Moore. The trial was a sensational one, with prosecutors claiming that Echols was a Satan worshiper and with the help of Misskelley and Baldwin, tortured and killed the young boys in a ritualistic rage. Only teenagers, Misskelley and Baldwin received life sentences and Echols was given the death penalty. In the subsequent 18 years since their lockup, there has been a growing support around the three men, with many doubting the...

While HBO has followed the case of The West Memphis 3 throughout three different documentary films, it's director Amy Berg (Deliver Us from Evil) and producers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh who have delivered the definitive chronicle of a tragic misstep in our country's justice system. West of Memphis starts at the very beginning with the murders of Christopher Byers, Steven Branch and Michael Moore in the small town of West Memphis, Arkansas and the impending convictions and trials of accused killers (then just young boys) Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr. But they aren't guilty in the least. With unprecedented access to judges, jurors and more, this films paints the most complete picture of the complete disorganization, discombobulation and absolute ignorance in dealing with this murder case. From missing key interrogation opportunities to some pretty shady police work, West of Memphis will fill you with rage as the...

The parents of two murder victims have written an open letter to Academy Awards bosses slamming their decision to shortlist a documentary about the horror for an Oscar.
Director Joe Berlinger's Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory, about the notorious 'West Memphis Three' case, has been nominated in the Documentary Feature category at the upcoming 2012 ceremony.
The film tells the story of three men - Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley - who were convicted of murdering three eight-year-old boys in Arkansas in 1993 but were freed last year over significant doubts about their guilt.
The case has become a cause celebre in the U.S., with many campaigners convinced the accused were victims of a miscarriage of justice.
But the parents of one of the murdered boys - Michael Moore - and the father and stepfather of a second, Stevie Branch, have penned a letter to officials at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to express their "sadness and outrage" at the decision to nominate the documentary for an Oscar.
The letter adds, "This film should be exposed as a fraud, not rewarded with an Academy Award nomination."
Branch's mother and the parents of the third murdered boy - Christopher Byers - believe the West Memphis Three are innocent of the slayings.

Little Rock, Ark. — The parents of two of three Arkansas boys who were murdered in 1993 said they're disappointed that a documentary about the killings and the three men convicted, known as the West Memphis Three, was nominated Tuesday for an Academy Award.
Todd and Diana Moore had asked the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to exclude "Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory" from consideration, saying it glorifies Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley. The three spent 18 years in prison, maintaining their innocence and attracting attention from celebrities, before a deal with prosecutors set them free last year.
The film, directed by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, is the third in a series of HBO documentaries about the killings of Michael Moore, Stevie Branch and Christopher Byers. The bodies of the 8-year-old Cub Scouts were found naked and tied up with shoe strings in West Memphis, a town along the Mississippi River.

The Sundance Film Festival, which kicks off this weekend, has been known to launch the careers of many a rising talent. The Festival has changed over the decades from a low-profile venue for small-budget, independent creators outside the Hollywood system to a now media extravaganza for the Hollywood industry. One thing that hasn’t changed is the number of great movies which premiere each and every year. This year has one of the best line-ups in recent memory. From niche horror to promising indie debuts, the festival is screening 110 feature-length films from 31 countries, so I’ve decided to narrow it down for everyone. Here are the movies you should keep an eye out for this year.

Yesterday we brought you the first poster for the Peter Jackson-produced documentary West of Memphis, and today the trailer has arrived. Amy Berg‘s film follows the West Memphis Three, made up of Jason Baldwin, Jesse Misskelley Jr., and Damien Echols The trio were convicted of the murder of three young boys back in 1994. After new DNA evidence surfaced, they were released on a suspended sentence of 18 years and 78 of prison.
The trailer below runs over four minutes and as the director has stated, the hope is to “get the West Memphis Three’s names cleared and help find the real killer.” The doc looks to be expertly put together and could open up light on the case by reaching a wide audience, as it will be premiering at Sundance this month. Seems like a perfect double feature with Werner Herzog’s Into the Abyss (one of my favorites...

While she once was an edgy upcoming starlette (Freeway, American Psycho, Fear and S.F.W.), Reese Witherspoon is now a family friendly actress that stars in movies like Four Christmases, Monsters vs Aliens, Vanity Fair and Legally Blonde. It's weird announcing her addition to Atom Egoyan's West Memphis Three drama Devil's Knott. It makes me nervous. The pic is based on investigative reporter Mara Leveritt's 2003 book "Devil's Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three," which chronicled the prolonged murder trial of defendants Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr., who served 18 years in prison before being released in August. The trio were accused of killing Christopher Byers, Michael Moore and Stevie Branch, three 8-year-old boys who were found brutally murdered and hog-tied in a wooded area of West Memphis, Arkansas known as Robin Hood Hills.
