- Wrote "No Beast So Fierce" based on his experiences as a criminal. "Beast" is the basis for the Straight Time (1978) screenplay. His other novels include "Animal Factory"; "Little Boy Blue"; "Dog Eat Dog" and his autobiography, "Education Of A Felon" [in Europe titled "Mr. Blue"]. The novel "Stark" and the collection of short stories "Death Row Breakout" were published posthumously.

- In November 2000 he won the British crime-writing award, the Macallan Dagger, for Non-Fiction for his memoirs, entitled "Mr. Blue" (which was the character he played in Reservoir Dogs (1992)).
