When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), “Ford v Ferrari” (2020), “Dune” (2022) and last year’s champ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. A slew of winners — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015), “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019) and 2021 winner “Sound of Metal.” Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity” (2014) won by...

Indiana Jones has fought a lot of screen villains: Nazis, assassins, evil high priests, corrupt rich douchebags, Cate Blanchett, Cate Blanchett’s hair. Yet Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny — the fifth movie to feature Harrison Ford’s globetrotting, snake-hating, whip-cracking, fedora-rocking archeology professor — pits our man Indy against the single greatest nemesis he’s ever faced: time.
Oh, there’s a ton of Nazis here too, trust us. Ditto some shady government agents, a racist redneck, a henchman roughly the size and width of a redwood, a Moroccan kingpin with a scimitar,...

The films in the running for the 2023 Best Film Editing Oscar are “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Elvis,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Tar,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Our current odds indicate that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10/3) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “Top Gun: Maverick” (37/10), “Elvis” (9/2), “The Banshees of Inisherin” (9/2), and “Tar” (9/2).
Five of the six individual cutters competing for the gold this year are first-time nominees, making for the category’s highest newcomer rate since 2018. In that case, Lee Smith emerged victorious on his third bid for “Dunkirk.” The current group of rookies consists of Eddie Hamilton (“Top Gun: Maverick”), Paul Rogers (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Monika Willi (“Tar”), and “Elvis” duo Jonathan Redmond and Matt Villa.
Redmond and Villa would be the 18th pair of editors to win this award together and the third to do so within the last decade, after Alfonso Cuarón and...

The films in the running for the 2021 Best Film Editing Oscar are: Yorgos Lamprinos (“The Father”), Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”), Frédéric Thoraval (“Promising Young Woman”), Mikkel E.G. Nielsen (“Sound of Metal”) and Alan Baumgarten (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”). Our current odds indicate that “Sound of Metal” (69/20) will take the prize, followed in order by “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (71/20), “Nomadland” (9/2), “The Father” (9/2), and “Promising Young Woman” (9/2)
Of the five individuals in this year’s lineup, only Baumgarten has been nominated before. He, Jay Cassidy, and Crispin Struthers were collectively recognized for “American Hustle” in 2014 but lost to Alfonso Cuarón and Mark Sanger (“Gravity”).
Any one of the newcomers could become the fifth cutter in eight years to prevail on their first outing. Sanger was the first, followed by Margaret Sixel, John Ottman, and Andrew Buckland.

As an optimist that believes theatrical exhibition will survive, I look forward to the day when David Prior’s The Empty Man is introduced by a genre geek at an upcoming cult screening, perhaps Weird Wednesdays at the Alamo Drafthouse. The Empty Man is a curious creation, arriving as a B-movie compromise from Disney for beleaguered theaters while the studio ships its A-level movies like Pixar’s Soul to Disney+. This picture, with a 137-minute running time, was seemingly plucked from the limbo of the pre-Disney Fox vault, and although Disney has changed the name of the studio in February, they didn’t even spare the expense to swap out the 20th Century Fox logo and presenting credit on the Dcp sent to theaters.
Putting aside the business of distribution and exhibition, as well as The Empty Man’s unique time and place in cinematic history, for much of the...

The 92nd Oscars featured a mix of the expected and the unexpected Sunday, with Neon’s South Korean film Parasite capping the evening by winning Best Picture, making history as the first foreign-language film ever to take the marquee prize.
Parasite director and co-writer Bong Joon Ho made four trips to the Dolby Theater stage, with the film also winning for Directing, Original Screenplay and International Feature.
Other honorees who spent this compressed Oscar season honing their acceptance speeches for tonight were the four Acting winners — all of whom won as expected. That meant statuettes for Joaquin Phoenix (Leading Actor for Joker), Renee Zellweger (Leading Actress for Judy), Brad Pitt (Supporting Actor for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Laura Dern (Supporting Actress for Marriage Story).
Check out all the winners’ speeches below.

Parasite – Bong Joon Ho
Neon’s film Parasite made Oscar history by becoming the first foreign language film to win Best Picture during the 92nd Academy Awards. Nominated for six Oscars, the film walked away on Sunday night with four Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best International Feature and Best Original Screenplay.
Directed by Bong Joon Ho, Parasite previously won the Palme d’Or at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival as well as top honors at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Cast.
Only 11 international feature films have ever been nominated in the Best Picture category. Bong Joon Ho became the first South Korean to ever win the best director Oscar.
During his acceptance speech he said, “When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart, which is “the most personal is the most creative.

Though it lost Best Picture, “1917,” Sam Mendes’ single-shot, World War I extravaganza, was rewarded with the most crafts Oscars Sunday night. For its technical virtuosity it received three awards, powered by cinematographer Roger Deakins’ second win for his brilliant camera choreography.
Deakins was joined by the sound mixing team of Mark Taylor and Stuart Wilson for their intricate soundscape as part of the continuous-shot narrative, and, surprisingly, Mpc Film (the dark horse winner) for VFX. Ironically, though, Mpc’s win overshadowed its own innovative virtual production and photoreal animation on Jon Favreau’s “The Lion King.” Yet this supporting visual effects work played an integral role in making stitches invisible and creating CG environments (including No Man’s Land and the burning village of Écoust).
Meanwhile, Pixar won its 10th animated feature Oscar for “Toy Story 4,” and “Hair Love,” the black father-daughter bonding work, took home the animated short Oscar.

In a stunning upset, Bong Joon Ho’s black comedy “Parasite” almost swept the 92nd Academy Awards on Sunday night, making history along the way.
“Parasite” became the first foreign-language film to win best picture. Its victories in the international feature film, director and original screenplay categories were also a first for a South Korean movie. The film only lost in two categories: film editing and production design. Taika Waititi nabbed adapted screenplay for “Jojo Rabbit.”
“Parasite” beat out Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” Todd Phillips’ “Joker” — which had led nominations with 11 — Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Sam Mendes’ “1917,” James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari,” Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” and Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” for the top prize.

‘Ford v Ferrari’ Editing Duo Celebrate First Oscar Wins; Thank Outgoing Fox Studios Chief Emma Watts
Ford v Ferrari racked up its second Oscar tonight by triumphing in the Film Editing field, with editors Michael McCusker and Andrew Buckland both celebrating a debut win.
The high-octane pic followed its BAFTA triumph in the same field by beating close competitor Parasite (going by the bookies’ odds), meaning Oscar didn’t reflect the usually reliable bellwether the Ace Eddie Awards, which feted Parasite (drama) and Jojo Rabbit (comedy) this year.
Taking to the stage to receive the award from presenters Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Buckland gave a shoutout to his family in Argentina, and also thanked the movie’s sound team, who earlier in tonight’s ceremony picked up the Sound Editing prize.
McCusker, who was previously nominated back in 2006 for another James Mangold pic, Walk The Line, made sure to praise his director collaborator. “It has been a great, great pleasure to have sat and watch...

Bong Jong Ho’s South Korean film Parasite continued its remarkable awards-season run tonight, winning the top prize for editor Jimmo Yang at the 70th annual Ace Eddie Awards. It’s the first time the American Cinema Editors has given its marquee Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) award to a foreign-language pic.
Searchlight Pictures’ Nazi sendup Jojo Rabiit won the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) for Tom Eagles, and Axel Geddes took home Best Edited Animated Feature Film for Disney/Pixar’s billion-dollar sequel Toy Story 4. Todd Douglas Miller scooped the Eddie for Best Edited Documentary (Feature) for Neon’s Apollo 11.

“Oh my god,” Yang said in his acceptance speech. “I definitely didn’t see this coming, so I didn’t prepare a speech, and my brain is going crazy. First of all, this all feels like a dream. I can’t believe this is happening.

The American Cinema Editors guild, which hands out its awards on January 17, has a good track record as a preview of the Oscar winner for Best Picture (17 out of the last 29) and a great one for forecasting who will win the Film Editing Oscar (22 of the last 29). Not surprisingly, it is also fairly prescient when it comes to predicting the five Film Editing Oscar slots; all of this year’s Academy Awards nominees contend for this cutting prize.
In 1992, the Eddies went from three to five nominees (matching that of the Oscars) and in 2000 it split the award in two, with five nominees for each of drama and comedy/musical. Over the past 27 years, 120 of the 135 Oscar nominees for Film Editing had first reaped a Golden Eddie bid; that makes for an accuracy rate of 89%.

It was a historic day for Korean cinema as the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards were announced earlier today. Kicking things off was “In the Absence” by Yi Seung-jun and Gary Byung-seok Kam, a documentary on the tragic sinking of Mv Sewol ferry in 2014, which was nominated in the Best Documentary Short Subject category. A short while later, “Parasite” took centre stage. And let’s not forget one more Asian Title within the nominations, the Award-Winning Stop-Motion Animation “Sister” by Siqi Song.

Sam Mendes’ bold, continuous-shot, World War I thriller, “1917,” and Todd Phillips’ $1 billion blockbuster, “Joker,” dominated the Oscar craft nominations on Monday, grabbing seven apiece.
Meanwhile, Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” each scored five nominations, while Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” nabbed three along with James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari.” Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” and Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” each came away with two nominations, and Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” was singled out for Randy Newman’s romantic score.
But “1917” provided the biggest tour de force crafts event of the season, with nominations for Roger Deakins’ uniquely orchestrated cinematography, Dennis Gassner’s exacting production design, Thomas Newman’s haunting score, the unusual sound editing and sound mixing, and, surprisingly, makeup and hairstyling and VFX.

Chicago – In a sense of deja vu from the recent Golden Globe Awards, the nominees for the 92nd Academy Awards has been named on January 13th, 2020. This breaks a precedent of the last ten years, with the Oscar ceremony moved up to February 9th from it’s usual position in late February to early March.
Nine films were named in the Best Picture category, with “Little Women” and “Ford vs. Ferrari” joining the seven other films recognized by the Golden Globes (including Best Foreign Language Film Globe winner “Parasite”). “Joker” led the numbers game with 11 nominations, with 10 nods for “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Irishman.” The Best Actress category was exactly the same as the Globes (Drama), and Leonardo Di Caprio is the only difference in the Best Actor column. As at the Golden Globes, the directing category is the same five men, again snubbing Greta Gerwig for “Little Women.
