Alan Menken on Howard Ashman, and honouring his work in the new Beauty & The Beast movie...
Alan Menken, in partnership with the late Howard Ashman, won two of his many Oscars for his work on 1991’s Disney classic, Beauty & The Beast. Yet come the new take on the film, that’s heading into cinemas next week, Menken was – bizarrely – not involved from day one.
Instead, after Bill Condon had been hired to direct the film, choreographer Anthony Van Lasst suggested to Menken that they meet up. “I flew down to Washington”, Menken told an assembled throng of reporters (including your lowly Den Of Geek correspondent(, “and I met Bill there”.
The meeting went well. “It was great. First of all his work was fantastic. I loved meeting him. Instantly I was struck by what a smart, thoughtful and directed kind of guy he is. On the basis...

When Corinne Bailey Rae's first husband, Jason Rae, died of an accidental overdose in 2008, she was left rudderless. "When you're in a relationship with someone, it's so much about tearing down the walls between you two that you sort of confuse what is you and what is them. When you lose them, you question: 'What is left of me?'" says Bailey, who opens up about love after loss in the new issue of People and on her album, The Heart Speaks in Whispers, out now. "There was no specific turning point," says Rae of recovering from the devastating heartbreak.

In 2008, Corinne Bailey Rae was on top of the world. But on March 22 of that same year, barely a month after she took home her first Grammy, the English R&B star's whole world fell apart when her husband died of an accidental overdose. "I felt like I lost everything, like I'd lost my whole life," Rae, 37, says in the new issue of People, remembering the anguish she endured when her saxophonist first husband died after mixing alcohol and methadone that was prescribed to a friend. "I was in so much pain. I was numb. I had family putting food...

A dog saved its own life by calling the police after it had wound a telephone cord around its neck. George, a 2-year-old Basset Hound, had got himself into the predicament when, while alone at home on Saturday, March 24, he knocked a telephone to the floor and became entangled in the wire. Amazingly, he then managed to dial 999, seemingly as he pawed at the phone in a panic. Although George was unable to ask for help, The Sun reports that the emergency operator alerted police, who then rushed to the home of driving instructor Steve Brown and his daughter Lydia. Four police officers were ready to smash down the door, but a neighbour was able let them in with a key. The family friend, Paul Walker, described what happened on entry, saying: "The police split up and ran through the house thinking someone had either (more)...

Toronto -- A tightening home entertainment market on Monday caught up with Canadian DVD maker Cinram International.
Toronto-based Cinram said it will stop making DVDs for Warner Home Video on July 31, 2010.
The end of a six-year DVD pact with the Hollywood studio sent stock in Cinram down Can$1.71 ($1.60), or by 60%, to Can$1.20 ($1.27) in afternoon trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
Cinram's long-term deal with Warner began in 2003 when then AOL Time Warner sold its Warner Music Group's DVD and CD manufacturing and distribution operations to the Canadian company for $1.05 billion.
That deal included Cinram making and distributing DVD and CD titles in North America and Europe for Warner Home Video, Warner Music Group and New Line Cinema.
Supplying DVDs to Hollywood studios and other foreign customers makes up around 80% of Cinram's global business, and the Warner Home Video supply deal accounted for around 28% of its overall revenue in 2009.

Corinne Baily Rae is on a journey, and she's invited us along for a listen. Her new CD titled The Sea, was released on January 26th, after the artist took a two-year hiatus. Still shaken from the death of her husband Jason Rae in 2008, Corinne has been shifting between grief and healing; a theme that subtly resonates throughout the eleven songs on the CD. The tracks of her tears are evident on this record, but by no means interfere with its true intention. A spirit of honesty, love, discovery, and hope are clearly present in her voice and within the lyrics on The Sea. Bailey Rae changed course and altered the direction of the project when Jason passed away. Originally aiming for a more up-beat progression from her slower-grooved debut album, she halted work on it for a year while pausing to grieve. What hasn't changed is Bailey Rae's signature sound.

Any proper comedy buff will tell you that Steve Coogan is not nearly as famous in the States as he should be. Here comes the proof: The Steve Coogan Collection, a DVD set (out today) of the Mancunian funnyman’s nine most legendary, laughable, and provocative BBC shows. They range from the groundbreaking Knowing Me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge (Ricky Gervais’ irritating, pipe-dreaming David Brent wouldn’t exist without chat show flunky Alan) to the previously unavailable Paul and Pauline Calf’s Video Diaries (Coogan plays both of the trashy siblings, pictured) and the oddly sweet pest control comedy Saxondale.
