Some pundits worry that the Oscar ceremony won’t feel like the real thing, because the late date (April 25) is disorienting and because the show will be divided between two venues, L.A.’s Union Station and the traditional Dolby Theatre. In truth, a fluid date and multiple locations go back to Oscar’s earliest days.
The first televised ceremony in 1953 had cameras in both Hollywood and New York, a tactic that continued through 1957. Even before that, Oscar included live segments. So this is a return to the original format.
Early ceremonies were broadcast on radio; in 1940, the show stopped for its first live remote, which was Franklin D. Roosevelt’s six-minute address to showbiz.
In 1951, ABC Radio aired the Oscars. Lead actor contender José Ferrer was starring in the comedy “20th Century” on Broadway with fellow nominee Gloria Swanson, so he scheduled a modest Oscar-night birthday party for her...

On the heels of Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore's order to halt same-sex marriage licenses in the state, an emboldened National Organization for Marriage decided to send a history major to do a lawyer's job. Fox News anchor and experienced lawyer hosted Megyn Kelly hosted Brian Brown (the Nom president, not the Australian guy from Cocktail) on Wednesday night's The Kelly File to discuss Moor's order. Brown was doing pretty well for himself until he started to say words, and then things went all haywire for him.

CNBC host trashes Gov. Rick Perry over comparison of homosexuality to alcoholism, Teen Wolf talks importance of gay story lines, a guide to gaybros
Steve Martin has tweeted that the news of a Father of the Bride 3 with the gay wedding is news to him, and that he has no offer or script. That doesn’t mean it’s not happening, deals on rights need to close, and it hasn’t actually been written yet, so perhaps the story was just a bit more advanced than the actual project. Some sites are actually talking about gay activists being offended that the title for a male gay wedding movie has “bride” in it, which I think is taking political correctness too far. It’s a franchise, and I think following it is kind of cute and clever.
While Hodor has gone full frontal on Game of Thrones, we didn’t really see the full Kristian Nairn,...

Those who aren't outraged by Phil Robertson's recent anti-gay remarks, are outraged at those who are outraged. Make sense? To put it simply, supporters of the Duck Dynasty patriarch have put together a petition urging A&E to lift Robertson's suspension from the hit reality show. Oh, and they want the network to say sorry, too. The petition, drafted by National Organization for Marriage president Brian Brown, begins by addressing the reader (aka "marriage supporter") that, "The gay lobby bullies are at it again. This time they've attacked one of the most popular Christians in America—Phil Robertson, patriarch of Duck Dynasty's Robertson family." Brown continues,...

Kylie Minogue says that she's working on her new album, and while she may embrace her inner Ibiza, she hopes to bring songs like "Flower" that are more personal into the mix.

"Glee" star Jane Lynch has joined the ongoing boycott against Amway after the Michigan-based direct selling company's president was revealed to have made a personal donation to an anti-gay marriage group.
Lynch, who is openly gay and married to clinical psychologist Lara Embry, "grabbed the pen out of my hand and signed away," according to former Republican presidential candidate and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (Lgbt) rights advocate Fred Karger, who asked for the actress's support of the boycott he launched in August, according to Michigan Live.
The postcard bearing Lynch's signature has reportedly since been sent to Amway president and owner Doug DeVos. Other high-profile names attached to the boycott include reality TV star Reichen Lehmkuhl, who is also openly gay.
Karger, who serves as president of the Lgbt advocacy group Rights Equal Rights foundation, says his boycott extends to Amway's parent company and all all other businesses affiliated with DeVos' family business,...

Just when I thought it was such wonderful news that three of the hospitals treating patients from the Aurora shootings were planning on wiping out or severely reducing the medical bills for the victims, a wet blanket decides to politicize it in a negative way.
I've been largely ignoring (at great effort), the drama around Katherine Jackson and her grandchildren. But she's back at home, and upset she lost guardianship of her grandchildren after vanishing for a week without telling them she was leaving.

Molly Ringwald may be getting pushback on whether Ducky was gay, but she can be sure she's surrounded by a bunch of gays when she's the Grand Marshall of L.A. Pride.
One Million Moms is boycotting both Marvel and DC over their gay characters, which I'm certain they're grateful for. Evidently though, it's not gay if there's a robot penis involved.
The Southern Poverty Law Center is calling out the National Organization for Marriage for their tendency to denounce extremist groups for their language while still linking out to their anti-gay screeds and discredited studies. I bet Brian Brown would love the martyr status that would come with being designated a hate group.
Alvin McEwen has an excellent rebuttal...

Cougar Town has been suffering in the ratings, and I admit to deleting most of the season from the DVR without watching it. But could the troubled sitcom find new life on TBS? That's the latest rumor, which gets really messy since several stars have booked alternative gigs for next season.
Bryan Fischer, the hate monger who spent a week demanding that Mitt Romney fire his gay spokesman Richard Grennell, is now saying Romney shouldn't have done it, because it shows he's too spineless to be president. I'm not disputing that, but it sure is funny to watch the infighting.
The pope is demanding that U.S. bishops toe the line on church teachings about marriage equality, contraception, and euthanasia.

He may have quit the drugs, but alcohol and Bobby Brown still seem to get on just fine. The singer was on his way back to Miami from Aruba this week, along with his wife Alicia Etheridge and son Cassius, and as eyewitnesses allege, Bobby was blind drunk on the American Airlines flight. Still in the vacation spirit(s), Mr. Brown?
A co-passenger named Brian Brown (not related to Bobby) revealed to RadarOnline, “It was obvious in the terminal that he’d been drinking a lot. He was staggering and several of his family members had to hold him up in order to board the flight. Security had to check his sobriety and kept him at the jet bridge entrance until finally letting him board.” Bobby promptly passed out on the flight as soon as he was allowed on apparently, and Brian added, “He reeked of alcohol and his wife...

If the White House won't fight for the Defense of Marriage Act anymore, there are plenty of legal eagles who will. Eve Conant and Daniel Stone talk to same-sex unions' newly emboldened opponents.
Rewind to a few months, weeks, or even just two days ago, and Peter Wolfgang, executive director of the Family Institute of Connecticut, was feeling like a profound underdog in his fight against gay marriage. "Let's just say the deck was stacked against us, it was not a level playing field," says Wolfgang. But today he is a happy man.

President Obama shocked gay rights activists and opponents alike Wednesday, announcing that the Department of Justice will no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act limiting same-sex marriage. Eve Conant & Daniel Stone report on the fallout.
On Wednesday, about an hour after the Justice Department announced it would no longer be defending the Defense of Marriage Act that limits same-sex marriage across state lines, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney was peppered with questions from stunned reporters.

The president's view on the constitutionality of the law had changed, Carney said. But Obama's personal views on the legality of same-sex marriage were still evolving. "The president is obligated to enforce the law," Carney said, but he would no longer defend it in federal court.

I have to admit, the winner of this one surprised me quite a bit. Last week's voting split up Kevin (Matthew Rhys) and Scotty (Luke Macfarlane), because one was cheated on, and one was a cheater, and each had separate journeys to make as a result. I fully expected the wronged Kevin to run away with the vote, but it was Scotty you sided with.
There was something humanizing about revealing that Scotty wasn't just be perfect kitchen utensil for the Walker family, and you guys responded by giving him an astonishing 52.77% of the vote. His television husband was a distant second at 19.77%
Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) only managed 14.48% of the vote for negotiating the power structures of their relationship, and perky Zac Young brought up the rear at 12.97%.

Chicago-based indie film distributor Music Box is launching a home entertainment division.
Music Box, run by co-toppers Ed Arentz and William Schopf, has used Mpi Home Video to handle its disc distribution on titles including the French mystery "Tell No One." The new division is expected to release 10-12 titles next year as Music Box takes what Arentz calls "the next step" in expanding the company's operational scope.
But he added that the indie will continue to focus largely on foreign-language titles.
"Home video is probably a little more resistant to foreign language, and we're not expecting that to change," he said. "But we do have some films that we think can get people's attention."
Initial titles set for self-distribution by Music Box Films Home Entertainment include the French romantic comedy "Shall We Kiss" and the French biopic "Seraphine," set for release Feb. 23 and March 23, respectively. Those will be followed...
