The Cinemax series adapted from J.K. Rowling’s work, C.B. Strike, finally has a debut date so we can all mark our calendars. It may just be the anglophile in me, but the series, which stars Tom Burke and Holliday Grainger, looks like just the right mix of mystery and “British television” sensibilities. The show is based on the series of books Rowling wrote under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith and the series kicks off with three one-hour episodes based on “The Cuckoo’s Calling,” the first book in the series. The series follows Cormoran “C.B.” Strike (Burke), a war veteran turned private detective, and his protege (Grainger). In the first episode, Strike is sought out by the brother of a supermodel whose death was ruled a suicide. When held up to the heady heights of its BAFTA-winning spiritual predecessor Twenty Twelve, the first series of W1A fell short on occasions.
But with a new series opener in which a high-level management power struggle starts simmering alongside the usual japes, hi-jinks and gaffes at Broadcasting House, the BBC's self-flagellating satire is at last hitting its stride.
Hugh Bonneville's still the star of the show as Ian Fletcher, keeping a sharp focus on charter renewal as his contemporaries in the Way Ahead Task Force fall over themselves (almost literally at one point) to get one over on their professional rivals. There's whispers of a new senior post at stake, and everyone seems to have their eye on it.

Yep, Danny Boyle is taking the deep dive into television. In case you forgot, last summer brought word that the "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Trainspotting" filmmaker was taking his talents to the small screen for the cop comedy/drama "Babylon," and now as we enter the New Year, the first look at the cast has arrived. Brit Marling and James Nesbitt are the bigger names in the new show, and they lead an extensive ensemble that includes Paterson Joseph, Bertie Carvel, Ella Smith, Martin Trenaman, Jim Howick, Cavan Clerkin, Jill Halfpenny, Adam Deacon, Jonny Sweet, Nick Blood, Stuart Martin, Andrew Brooke and Daniel Kaluuya. Phew! And that team will tackle a promising premise from "Peep Show" writers Sam Bains and Jesse Armstrong, that will follow an American new-media expert who's hired to transform the PR of the London police department. Between "Brooklyn Nine Nine" and this, are we looking at the renaissance of cop comedies?...

Brit Marling & More Join Danny Boyle's Cop Show 'Babylon,' FX Picks Up WWII Miniseries He'll Produce
As Danny Boyle now makes his way to television, helming the cop show "Babylon" for Channel 4 in the U.K., it's not a surprise that some very strong talent is following him to the small screen. No matter what the format, Boyle is one whom people are eager to work with. And so, Brit Marling and James Nesbitt are leading the ensemble cast for "Babylon" that includes Paterson Joseph, Jill Halfpenny, Adam Deacon, Daniel Kaluuya, Jonny Sweet, Andrew Brooke and Bertie Carvel. Penned by "Peep Show" writers Sam Bains and Jesse Armstrong, the comedy/drama will follow an American new-media expert who's hired to transform the PR of the London police department. The premise will allow for a look at all levels of police work, in a show that is being described as “razor-sharp and visually audacious.” And things are moving quickly with shooting to get underway this fall,...

Back in late August came word that "Slumdog Millionaire" director Danny Boyle was set to direct the pilot episode of UK Channel 4's new comedy drama series "Babylon".
All that was known at the time was that it is set in the world of modern policing, and is being penned by BAFTA winners Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong ("Fresh Meat," "Four Lions").
Now, further details have been revealed about the show, which will be a six-part series set around London and shot documentary-style.
James Nesbitt ("Jekyll," "The Hobbit") plays police chief constable Richard Miller who hires American new media expert Liz Garvey (Brit Marling) to revamp the public image of the British police.
Garvey must revolutionise a PR department struggling to keep up in the modern age of rolling news, smart phones and an information-hungry public.

It's kind of amazing to see a single hour of British television show up a $163 million Hollywood movie, and that's the happy outcome of "Doctor Who's" third episode of Season 7 -- "A Town Called Mercy" -- which blends sci-fi and Western tropes far more successfully than last summer's big budget movie dud "Cowboys & Aliens."
What better setting for the Doctor (Matt Smith) to work out his mini-crisis of morality than the American West, caught in the midst of an intergalactic battle between a cyborg Gunslinger (Andrew Brooke), his conflicted creator (Adrian Scarborough) and an upstanding Sheriff (Ben Browder)? Before the hour is up there's a stop at the saloon, an angry mob, a quick draw competition, multiple heroic deaths, breathtaking shots of desert scenery and a public duel at high noon.
What really moves the season's overall arc forward in "A Town Called Mercy" is a deeper look at the Doctor's state of mind.

Check out a quickie 30-second promo for “Blade” and “Batman” writer David Goyer’s latest venture, the original TV series “Da Vinci’s Demons”, which will star Tom Riley as the do-it-all genius Leonardo Da Vinci. The show will chronicle Da Vinci during his ’20s as a “artist, inventor, swordsman, lover, dreamer and idealist” who bucks the system and “invents” the future, whatever that means. The promo doesn’t offer up any footage, so it’s anybody’s guess what we’re getting here in terms of visuals, tone, and what have you. In a world where thought and faith are controlled, Leonardo Da Vinci fights to set knowledge free. The tortured genius defies authority and hurls himself into the future, forever changing the fate of mankind. “Da Vinci’s Demons” also stars Andrew Brooke, Gregg Chillin, Elliot Cowan, Laura Haddock, and Elliot Levey. Da Vinci does what Da Vinci...
