The players: Director: Fernando Meirelles, Writers: Don McKellar, Jose Saramago (book), Cast: Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Danny Glover, Alice Braga
Facts of interest: Opened this year's Cannes Film Festival.
The plot: The film follows a small group of people struggling to survive after an epidemic of blindness descends upon their city.
Our thoughts: Fernando Meirelles’ “Blindness” is not as powerful or engaging as his previous works “The Constant Gardener” and “Cidade de Deus,” but the film is definitely not as bas as some critics made it out to be. The nature of the subject matter examined in this mystery thriller is one that concerns all of us, but it’s the way it is presented here that may not be appealing to large audiences.

Blindness Directed by: Fernando Meirelles Cast: Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Alice Braga, Gael Garcia Bernal Time: 2 hrs Rating: R Plot: A city is suddenly struck by an epidemic of "white blindness." The blind are quarantined by the government and one woman (Moore) who can still see, lies to be with her husband (Ruffalo). They attempt to deal with the blindness as best they can. Who’s It For? This is a different type of film and will most likely be a bit uncomfortable for some. There is a difficult rape scene and there is really no reason to have your kids see this film. You are also going to see naked bodies of all shapes and sizes. Expectations: I read the book by José Saramago ... Ok, that's not totally honest. I starting reading the book, liked the concept, but got distracted with other things. My wife liked it though, and

When City of God was released, it caused quite a stir among film fans. The film was both a critical and financial success and out of nowhere, director Fernando Meirelles became the next big thing. His follow up, an adaptation of John le Carré’s novel, The Constant Gardener was an entertaining film but both the story and style seemed conventional. I had expected more from the director who had been so innovative with his debut feature. For his third film, Meirelles has again taken up the written word for translation ontot he big screen this time choosing to take on Nobel Prize winning author José Saramago’s work.
As a novel “Blindness” is a brutally honest examination of the human condition when pushed to

Take it as a sign of some general anxiety disorder gripping the planet, but Cannes 2008 kicked off on a distinctly somber note. In "Blindness," the fest opener by Fernando Meirelles, civilization as we know it goes to hell and back when a group of urbanites in an unnamed city succumb to an epidemic of mysterious blindness. Only a character known as The Doctor's Wife (Julianne Moore, in a powerful turn) remains immune to the malady. Finding herself a leader in a world of savagery and chaos, she helps forge a new form of community that takes the film to a happier place (cue Kumbaya on the soundtrack).
Based on the celebrated allegorical novel by José Saramago, the film displays the ability first demonstrated by Meirelles in "City of God" to choreograph large groups of beleaguered folks through explosive situations. He's ably assisted by an international cast . who
