Hellbound: Hellraiser II picks up hours after the first film ended, seeing Kirsty Cotton (Ashley Laurence) confined to a mental hospital after she tells the authorities that her father was betrayed by his evil, adulterous wife, Julia (Clare Higgins), and is now being tormented in hell by sadomasochistic demons called Cenobites. Few believe Kirsty, except the thrill-seeking Dr. Channard (Kenneth Cranham), who is so intrigued by her frightening stories that he teams up with a newly resurrected Julia. When they open the gates to Hell and unleash the Cenobites,...

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star - Nick Swardson, Don Johnson, Christina Ricci
Contagion - Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law
Warrior - Tom Hardy, Nick Nolte, Joel Edgerton
Movie of the Week
Warrior
The Stars: Tom Hardy, Nick Nolte, Joel Edgerton
The Plot: The youngest son (Hardy) of an alcoholic former boxer (Nolte) returns home, where he’s trained by his father for competition in a mixed martial arts tournament — a path that puts the fighter on a collision corner with his older brother (Edgerton).
The Buzz: The world is pretty big, and there are a lot of folks out there busy populating it, so I guess it stands to reason that similar stories would crop up, even if they’re both insanely inspirational in their against-all-odds/too-good-to-be-true essence. I am, of course, nodding to the obvious similarities between last year’s (phenomenal...

In his Outside the Box interview featurette on the new DVD of Hellbound: Hellraiser II (coming December 30), director Tony Randel states that releasing the movie at Christmastime 20 years ago was “a huge mistake” on New World Pictures’ part. Fortunately, the video market is more forgiving than the theatrical one, so presumably he has no objections to Anchor Bay’s disc arriving in time to spread a little post-Yuletide anti-cheer.
This Anniversary Edition is also appearing long enough after the Bay’s previous release of Hellbound that its supplemental pleasures more than temper any double-dipping pain. The movie deserves the revisiting, too, as it represents a best-case scenario for a horror sequel (or a follow-up in any genre, for that matter). Unlike the subsequent HELLRAISERs, which plunked Cenobite villain Pinhead (Doug Bradley) down in unrelated (and, as the series went on, pre-existing) scenarios, the Peter Atkins-scripted Hellbound directly continues the...
