When a classmate learns that new girl Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez) has recently moved in with the Walter family, she practically squeals with excitement. “You’re like the luckiest girl in this whole school,” she gushes, describing Jackie’s situation as “boy heaven.”
The comment is more than a little tactless, considering Jackie was only taken in by the Walters after losing her entire family in a car accident. But it’s also an accurate diagnosis of the fantasy that Netflix’s My Life With the Walter Boys is meant to represent, in which prim and pretty Jackie finds herself living among all the most eligible teenage bachelors in town. Alas, dull characters and sluggish pacing put a damper on the daydream before it ever has a chance to properly ignite.

Alyson Hannigan was brilliant in the role of Willow Rosenberg on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, which ran for a total of seven seasons and 144 episodes, beginning in 1997 and wrapping up in 2003… But she didn’t join the show until the pilot was reshot, replacing the previously cast Riff Regan as Willow. And during an interview with Shut Up Evan, Melanie Lynskey confirmed that she was also a potential Willow.
Interviewer Evan Ross Katz had been told by Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar that the show’s creator Joss Whedon had envisioned Lynskey (only known from Heavenly Creatures at the time) as Willow when he was writing the pilot script, but Lynskey, who is from New Zealand, couldn’t audition because there was an issue with her visa. The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, a whopping 61 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12. Last year, there were only 48 options, compared to 41 in 2021 and 28 in 2020.
All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. A new rule change will require each voter to make no more than five selections in this category, whereas there was previously no limit. As opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

Setting a TV series in high school puts a ticking clock on your characters. Even if you start them as new students, they're going to age out in a few years. Then you have to figure out how to keep them together. Whether it's every character going to the same local college (which is very unlikely) or making some sort of pact to stick together, education be damned, you've written yourself into a corner before you start. Still, it's hard to resist a high school story. It's a time of tremendous change when brains are still developing and consequences don't have the same fear attached to them that they will later in life. So, how do you manage it?

"Hush" is the scariest episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and I will fight any naysayers on that. "The Body," where Buffy's mom dies, is the saddest and most impactful, in my opinion, but this one ... creepy, smiling men that float towards you, steal your voice, and then stab you ... there is no way to watch this and not shudder. I apologize for any nightmares the picture above gives you. I assure you, I have already collected all my old stuffed animals, checked under my bed for odd boxes, and turned on every light in the house.

Love stories are difficult on television. We've had plenty of them, of course, but there is a prevailing thought about TV couples; if you hook them up and make them happy, people will stop watching the show. The first story that comes to mind is David Addison (Bruce Willis) and Maddie Hayes (Cybill Shepherd) from "Moonlighting." The show was based on the angry flirtation between the two of them, and when they finally got together, the show suffered, both in audience opinion and ratings. There were other reasons for the end of "Moonlighting," but that is often cited as the main one. "Cheers" is another popular one that suffered once the main characters Sam (Ted Danson) and Diane (Shelley Long) got together. It's something "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon cites as the reason Buffy's relationships never really went well.
Whedon spoke about this in a 2003 interview with Salon.

Candace Cameron Bure has been called a lot of things lately, but award-winning is certainly not one of the descriptions. But that’s about to change … maybe.
The Fuller House actress who generated lots of headlines for moving her brand of entertainment to Great American Family just received the Best Family Television prize and the Grace Award for TV performance at the 30th Annual Movieguide Awards. Never heard of those? They’ve been (kindly) nicknamed the Christian Oscars because they like to honor wholesome and uplifting Christian entertainment.
Bure won for producing and starring in A Christmas … Present, the first holiday movie she produced for the channel under her Candy Rock Entertainment banner. The flick premiered in November as part of the channel’s Great American Christmas lineup. She played a real estate mom in the movie opposite Marc Blucas and Paul Fitzgerald.

We are living in an age of TV show revivals. By the end of this month, Night Court will even be back on the air. But don’t get your hopes up for a revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer that would bring Sarah Michelle Gellar back in the title role. While speaking with SFX Magazine (via Movieweb), Gellar said she wouldn’t want to play Buffy ever again.
When asked if she’s interested in reprising the role, Gellar answered, “I’m not. I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up. I am all for them continuing the story, because there’s the story of female empowerment. I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has the power can have the power.’ It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power.

Four years have passed since it was announced that a reboot of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series was in the works with Monica Owusu-Breen, co-creator of the TV show Midnight, Texas, writing, executive producing, and serving as showrunner. And since four years have gone by without any further word on the reboot, a lot of fans have probably forgotten that announcement had even happened. (I sure did.) So it’s no surprise to hear from Owusu-Breen’s fellow executive producer Gail Berman (via TV Line) that the reboot is “on pause”.
After the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot was announced, Owusu-Breen sent out the following statement:
For some genre writers it’s Star Wars.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my Star Wars.
Before I became a writer, I was a fan. For seven seasons, I watched Buffy Summers grow up, find love, kill that love. I watched her fight,...

The next installment of NatGeo’s Genius franchise will follow two subjects: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, and thus be titled Genius: MLK/X.
“The fourth season will explore the formative years, pioneering accomplishments, dueling philosophies and key personal relationships of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X,” per the official description. “While King advanced racial equality through nonviolent protest, Malcolm X argued forcefully for Black empowerment, identity and self-determination. If Hp Lovecraft had joined Extinction Rebellion, this is the kind of idea he might have come up with: a cautionary horror story about fracking, which disguises itself as a 70s ensemble drama before erupting into something altogether ickier. "Make it stop!" Cinedigm already released this film in the spring, but we're just catching up with this trailer for Unearth, an "eco-horror" thriller about farmers and the deadly consequences of allowing fracking. This originally premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival last year, where our writer Zofia gave it a positive review. The bond between two neighboring farm families is put to the test when one of them chooses to lease their land to a gas company with fracking plans. In the midst of this growing tension, the land is drilled and something long-dormant and terrifying is released. Don't mess with nature. "Unearth is about the horrifying repercussions sown by shortsighted decisions, and what our children reap from our actions." The film stars Adrienne Barbeau, P.J. Marshall, Allison McAtee, Rachel McKeon, Monica Wyche, Brooke Sorenson, and Marc Blucas. Yeah this does look incredibly terrifying. Don't frack! Keep that land intact.

Pairing two of the most iconic figures on the Spanish-language business scene, actress-producer Kate del Castillo, star of Telemundo smash hit “La Reina del Sur,” is teaming with former Netflix VP Erik Barmack to produce and star in a womanhunt thriller.
Provisionally entitled “Cold, Dead Hands,” a title that may well change, the movie is set up at Del Castillo’s Cholawood Productions, Barmack’s Wild Sheep Content, both in L.A., and Park City-based Top Dead Center Films, headed by Gary and Julie Auerbach, creators of the film. Gary Auerbach (“Hampton High Revealed”) directs.
The film went into production on Jan. 4, shooting in Utah. It opens with Del Castillo’s character waking up in a log cabin in deep forest, having been drugged and abducted. A message on a stereo tells her to press “play.” “I’m a hunter,” a voice says, explaining she’s been placed there because she’s a “worthy prey.

Hallmark Channel is getting us in the holiday spirit a little early this year. On Sept. 23, the network unveiled its full movie lineup for the upcoming season, and it's stacked. Just like last year, Hallmark will release 40 original films as part of Hallmark Channel's "Countdown to Christmas" and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries' "Miracles of Christmas." While Hallmark alums like Lacey Chabert and Tamera Mowry-Housley will star in a few films, a few stars will be making their Hallmark debut, including Aaron Tveit, Janel Parrish, Jeremy Jordan, and Marisol Nichols. Read ahead for the full schedule, as well as who is starring.

Stars: Adrienne Barbeau, Marc Blucas, P.J. Marshall, Allison McAtee, Rachel McKeon, Brooke Sorenson, Monica Wyche | Written by Kelsey Goldberg, John C. Lyons | Directed by John C. Lyons, Dorata Swies
When I read the terms “fracking” and “horror” linked together for a movie, I was curious but also unsure of what the hell it would even be. Enter Unearth, a horror flick written by Kelsey Goldberg (Painting Autumn) and John C. Lyons (Schism), who also directs along with Dorata Swies. The story of two Pennsylvania farming families whose relationships with one another become torn by the decision of one of the families to lease their land to a gas and oil conglomerate. The existing ties of these families is frayed with this decision, and as the drilling commences, there’s something underground that unleashes a new type of horror upon these two households.

Exclusive: Paris-based sales company Reel Suspects has added Eco-Horror Unearth to its slate ahead of the film’s bow at Fantasia this week.
Directed by John C. Lyons and Dorota Swies, Unearth follows two neighboring farm families whose relationships become strained when one of them leases their land to a natural gas company. In the midst of growing tension, the land is drilled and something long-dormant and terrifying, deep beneath the earth’s surface, is released.
It stars Adrienne Barbeau, Allison McAtee, P.J. Marshall, Rachel McKeon, Monica Wyche, Brooke Sorenson and Marc Blucas. The film is written by Lyons and Kelsey Goldberg. Lyons, Swies, McAtee, and Blucas are the producers.
Reel Suspects will rep international rights, the filmmakers have domestic.
“We are thrilled to work with the filmmakers, John and Dorota. Unearth‘s arthouse approach and relevant, timely story fit perfectly into our elevated genre slate. We are confident both...

Admittedly, there was a moment about halfway through Unearth, the “fracking horror movie” from directors John C. Lyons and Dorota Swies, when it felt like I was watching some more in line with an ecological drama than anything genre-related. But then as things began to amp up in the last 20 minutes or so, Unearth takes some severely sharp and twisted left turns and the narrative morphs into something more horrific, making the film something I’d ultimately define more as “genre adjacent” than a movie that’s pure horror.
And while I do wish Unearth had leaned into those horror-infused tendencies sooner, the film is definitely well-acted, gorgeously shot and perfectly captures the rising tensions surrounding two families who are faced with difficult decisions as an economic downturn threatens to destroy everything they’ve worked so hard for. Plus, anything with Adrienne Barbeau will always garner my attention, and she’s great here.
