For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit Showtime’s “Masters of Horror,” which was created by Mick Garris and aired for two seasons between 2005 and 2007.
It seemed like a horror fan’s wet dream: a horror anthology series with some of the greatest horror filmmakers of all time lensing short format horror films for premium cable. Although horror icons had teamed in the past to bring us series like “Tales from the Darkside” and “Tales from the Crypt,” there wasn’t a modern series that brought them all together to have a chance to tell their stories in the anthology format. “Masters of Horror” seemed like a prime opportunity to re-invent the waning anthology horror format, and while it didn’t quite re-invent the wheel as planned, it brought with it a lot of great content from some bonafide horror icons.

A new episode of the Revisited video series has just made its way online, and with this one we’re celebrating the birthday of the late, great director Tobe Hooper by looking at one of his more underrated horror films: the 2004 release Toolbox Murders (watch it Here)! You can hear all about it in the embed above.
Toolbox Murders is technically a remake of the 1978 film The Toolbox Murders, but it’s very different from the source material. Written by Jace Anderson and Adam Gierasch, this one has the following synopsis: Young couple Steve and Nell move into a once fashionable, but now decaying, apartment block in Los Angeles, and soon realise that a number of young female residents have met unusually violent deaths. Before long, Nell makes some disturbing discoveries about the building’s manager and her fellow tenants.
The film stars Angela Bettis, Brent Roam, Marco Rodríguez, Rance Howard,...

If ever there was a movie you could not blame for false advertising, it would be Weird Kidz. Having just finished this feature-length animation about… Well… Christ knows what it is really about but I will persevere and try to break down this South Park-esque hand-drawn slightly horror but mostly Big Mouth-y comedy coming-of-age story.
Before we do get into this though, a quick word on the hand-drawn aspect. I thought this really cool, especially considering it is rare to find an animated film these days that isn’t Disney, Illumination or the like. It’s always nice to see a group of creators willing to look backwards in the art. I mean that with all respect because it put this viewer in mind of the old-school animated flicks...

Back in 2012, Bloody Disgusting acquired Lucky McKee’s critically acclaimed The Woman after a firestorm of controversy that began at the Sundance Film Festival with a woman allegedly passing out in shock and this man losing his cool over the startling and uncomfortable content.
“This film outta be confiscated [and] burned. There’s no value in showing this to anyone,” he exclaimed.
Now, the film is coming back to us via Arrow Films and is now streaming on our very own Screambox alongside the film’s prequel, Offspring, both featuring a standout performance by Pollyanna McIntosh.

A new episode of the Revisited video series has just been released, and in this one we’re looking back at the 2002 film May (watch it Here), which was the feature debut of writer/director Lucky McKee and happens to be a movie that’s great to watch during the Halloween season. To hear all about it, check out the video embedded above!
May has the following synopsis: Young misfit May endured a difficult childhood because of her lazy eye. And though contact lenses have helped May adjust as a young adult, her deep-seated awkwardness remains a problem. Adam, a young man obsessed with fixing wrecked cars, takes a shine to May’s oddball ways. But May’s strangeness ultimately drives him away, leaving her open to the advances of her co-worker Polly. When Polly dumps her too, May’s emotional instability turns violent.

When May came out 20 years ago it met with mixed reviews. Low budget horror rarely gets a fair hearing, especially when it is as unusual and complex as May. But May had some word of mouth and striking cover art. It caught my eye while I was browsing in Fopp. It didn't look like any of the other horror DVDs, any of the DVDs. With the character of May (Angela Bettis) as a macabre Virgin Mary behaloed with twelve golden fabric scissors for the stars, the cover could lead you to think that the film had a lot of religious themes. Those aspects are there, May's doll Suzie being treated as a saintly relic or in the final scene when in an act of creation her word is made flesh, but the Woman Of The Apocalypse May is not.

"If you can't find a friend, make one," a mother says to her child on her birthday, after gifting her a glass-encased Doll named Suzie. This child, May (Angela Bettis), finds herself struggling to make friends due to her amblyopia, or lazy eye, and finds herself clinging to Suzie for company and some sense of solace. This premise forms the foundation for Lucky McKee's directorial debut, "May," whose journey from being a box office flop to a cult classic over the years is as intriguing and strange as McKee's indie horror itself. The film has all the markings of unconventional body horror, with a good amount of psychological complexity thrown in for good measure. 21 years after its release, "May" still works as a weird little film about acute loneliness, and how this lingering feeling shapes us to covet parts of a whole.

After a Sundance screening in 2002, Lucky McKee’s cult classic horror film May (watch it Here) earned a wider release in 2003 – and to mark the twentieth anniversary of that release, Second Sight Films is giving the film a special edition Blu-ray release in the UK that is packed with hours of bonus features! The release date is July 24th and the Blu-ray can be pre-ordered at This Link – but keep in mind that the Blu-ray is locked to Region B.

There was a time us old folk remember when you would rent a messed up little indie horror movie based solely on the cover and description. No Twitter hyperbole or festival raving aside from what was written on the box (which was often not to be believed). Not even a Rotten Tomatoes score to check! Just the cover art and you. And sometimes, you’d discover a hidden gem.
Lucky McKee’s May (2002) was one of those movies for a lot of people. A weird little flick that found its fanbase on home video. The eventual cult classic didn’t quite pre-date the internet but did come before Netflix and Tubi streaming. I watched it again for the first time in years and was taken back at how unique May really is.
If embarrassing American Idol auditions were a horror subgenre (they probably should be), May would be a perfect pairing.

For the past few years, editor, director, and animator Zach Passero has been working on a hand-drawn, animated horror film called The Weird Kidz and it’s finally making the rounds at film festivals. Passero, who has frequently worked with Lucky McKee on films like May (2002) and Tales of Halloween (2015), created The Weird Kidz from the fond memories of his childhood, and McKee serves as a producer on the film. Featuring cassette tapes and mullets and perfectly capturing the vibe of the eighties, The Weird Kidz follows three friends, 12-year-old boys Dug (Tess Passero), Mel (Glenn Bolton), and Fatt (Brian Ceely), as they go camping in the desert with Dug’s older brother Wyatt (Ellar Coltrane) and his girlfriend Mary (Sydney Wharton).
When the group stops at a gas station, the owner Duana tells them about The Night Child, a creature she claims lives in the desert and took her younger brother twenty-five years ago.

This article contains spoilers for "Poker Face" episode 5.
Rian Johnson's new Peacock series, "Poker Face," is a total blast with unique murder mysteries that wrap up before the end of each episode -- much like "Murder, She Wrote" or "Columbo," but with Natasha Lyonne working her own brand of mystery-solving magic. Each episode has a slightly different vibe to it, and while Johnson directed a couple of the episodes, he also brought in some talented folks to take on helming duties. Episode 5, "Time of the Monkey," finds our hero Charlie Cale (Lyonne) working at a nursing home while she's on the run from some seriously sinister criminals and the cops due to the events of the pilot, and it's a 1970s-flavored dark delight courtesy of horror director Lucky McKee.

Slashers have been predominantly male, but a few of them through the years have been female and one could even say that more and more of them are female, a fun change in the sub-genre. Pearl is one example of the recent slasher resurgence on the big screen and she’s one killer lady! Looking back, before Pearl, who were the best female slashers in our eyes? Who had the best kills, the best reason behind her kills, and who was the mother of them all? Here are our top 5 best female slashers, based on preferences and impact on the genre.

Of the many wonderful things found in writer/director Brea Grant’s 12 Hour Shift last year, chief among them was the return of star Angela Bettis to genre movies. Once a prolific presence in indie horror—thanks in large part to her frequent collaborations with writer/director Lucky McKee—the Texas-born Bettis had stepped away from horror for several years following her turn in McKee’s The Woman and a brief role on Tom Holland’s anthology Twisted Tales. She continued to act, but was sorely missed in the genre. Thanks to Grant and 12 Hour Shift, Bettis is back.
It’s the aforementioned working relationship with Lucky McKee for which most horror fans probably know Bettis best. A working actor on television, film, and even Broadway for several years before she was cast in May in 2002, it was her role as the title character in McKee’s feature...

There may be no one in independent horror having more of a moment right now than Brea Grant. As an actor, she starred in one of the best horror movies of 2020, After Midnight, and now The Stylist, already one of the best horror movies of 2021. As a writer, she’s responsible for Lucky (in which she also stars), an ambitious and inventive horror film about female fear that’s now available to stream on Shudder. As writer and director, she’s responsible for 12 Hour Shift, a bloody black comedy starring Angela Bettis as a drug-addicted nurse caught up in an organ harvesting scheme that goes bad; it was one of 2020’s best movies, full stop. The lesson from all of this? Give Brea Grant the keys to everything.
One of the infinite number of things that’s great about the Texas-born actor, writer, and director is her commitment to indie horror.

Brea Grant, at least for me, first came to prominence after appearing in Heroes, the mid-2000s superhero show that took the world by storm for about a season but never truly recovering post-writers strike. Since then she’s appeared in a number of other genre shows and movies, including The Guild, Game Shop, Worry Dolls and Beyond the Gates. However alongside her acting roles Grant has been slowing progressing as both writer and director; and this year she has not one but two genre films under her belt – writing and starring in Lucky; and writing and directing this hospital-set horror, 12 Hour Shift.

Now here is one dark premise – a nurse who funds her drug addiction by killing her patients and selling their organs. Some may see this as a nod to the organ theft legend of the 1990s, while others may recall the numerous ‘Angel of Death’ cases. Either way, there is always comedy to be found in the darkest of subjects.
The nurse in question is Mandy (Angela Bettis), a misanthrope who lives for smoke breaks and crushed opiates. Bettis does good work here, lending her character a disdainful crabbiness, especially when confronted by her peers’ intrusive small talk. Mandy bides her time until the small hours, when she can continue her lucrative organ trafficking. However, things go awry when she recruits Regina (Chloe Farnworth), her idiotic cousin, to act as a delivery driver.

This darkly comic riff on the legend of hospital organ trafficking hinges on Angela Bettis’ wonderfully dry performance as an opioid-addicted nurse
In the 90s, everyone had heard the urban myth about black-market organ trading: the story of the poor chump who went to a party and woke up in a bath of ice minus a kidney. Now, with this blackly funny, cheerfully violent bad-taste comedy-horror, director Brea Grant riffs on the legend. Her film is set in 1999 in the ER unit of an Arkansas hospital where one of the nurses, Mandy (Angela Bettis), runs a side hustle in organ trafficking. Whenever a patient who is unlikely to make it is wheeled in, she earmarks them for harvest – and has even been known to nudge victims along with an injection of bleach.

David Arquette has been quite the busy man these days, as he starred in the film “You Can’t Kill David Arquette” and most recently released the zany thriller “12 Hour Shift” alongside Angela Bettis and Chloe Farnworth. Arquette is also reprising his role as Dwight “Dewey” Riley in the highly anticipated film “Scream 5”. If you are looking for a fun/off-the-wall thriller then “12 Hour Shift” is the film for you! Arquette plays the role of prison inmate Jefferson who is brought to the hospital during one absolutely insane overnight shift! Arquette also serves as a producer on the film. The plot for “12 Hour Shift” is as follows: Over the course of one night in 1998 at an Arkansas hospital, a junkie nurse (Angelia Bettis), her scheming cousin (Chloe Farnworth), and a group of black market organ-trading criminals get caught up in a heist gone wrong. And believe us … things really,...

October is here, which means it’s the time of the season for getting scared. With Halloween gradually becoming a month-long celebration over the past few years — even if the coronavirus has put a damper on many activities such as trick-or-treating — one thing we can always look forward to during these 31 days is a deluge of horror movies old and new, whether via streaming, cable network marathons or even fleeting theatrical releases.
Horror is already a reliable genre both at the box office (under normal circumstances) and in the digital space, so it’s no surprise that even in these compromised times, scary movies are coming at us hard and fast in October. Below is a round-up of fresh horror releases arriving either at your local multiplex (and we urge you to keep the risks of going to the theater in mind) or right in your living room. Ironically, even in decidedly unnerving times,...

12 Hour Shift (Brea Grant)
Any professional dealing with routine levels of stress and trauma is bound to develop a morbid sense of humor–and the funny horror-comedy 12 Hour Shift might become a cult classic amongst nurses. Written and directed by Brea Grant and set in a small rural hospital in Arkansas in 1999, the film finds cynical ER nurse Mandy (Angela Bettis) about to start what she thinks is a routine twelve-hour shift. Her definition of routine involves a scheme to poison patients with bleach while shift supervisor Karen (Nikea Gamby-Turner) harvests their organs for a local black market dealer. Things don’t go as planned when Mandy’s cousin by marriage,...

Organ Trail: Grant Goes Haywire with Oversight on the Overnight Shift
Organ trafficking usually isn’t the focal point of a comedy, even a dark one, which automatically makes actress Brea Grant’s screenwriting and directorial debut 12 Hour Shift a marvel of the grotesque. That she employs Lucky McKee muse Angela Bettis as her beleaguered lead is another reason for the price of admission.
Basically positioning a slasher-tinged genre effort as a comedy of errors, it’s a novel scenario which never quite reaches the heights of its promise, strangely preferring to stay in a certain realm of the demure and diminutive rather than the excessively over-the-top energy it requires for a pay off which should have felt more Grand Guignol than it does.…...

It’s been way too long since we’ve gotten to see Angela Bettis covered in someone else’s blood. The rare actor capable of endowing homicide with the casualness (and passion) of a hobby, Bettis’ endearingly cracked turn in the titular role of 2002’s “May” — Lucky McKee’s modern fable about an introverted loner who quite literally makes a friend from the spare parts she collects from other people — minted her as an indie horror icon. In fact, Bettis was so indelible in the film that it was hard to notice when she fell off the map a bit during the years that followed; some performances lodge a shiv in your brain and leave it there like it always just happened. As a no-nonsense Arkansas ER nurse/black market kidney-dealer in “12 Hour Shift,” Bettis finally gets the material she needs to deliver another one.

Tagline: "Pull Your Shift Together." 12 Hour Shift is dark comedy from director Brea Grant (After Midnight). This film had its International Premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival, in Montreal recently. Shot in Jonesboro, Arkansas, this title is already getting set to show on home entertainment formats throughout North America. The film stars: David Arquette (The Tripper), Angela Bettis, former professional wrestler Mick Foley and Kit Williamson. The story takes place in 1999, over a double-shift in the hospital. Here, underground organ harvesting and selling are taking place. Now, a few release details are available for 12 Hour Shift. A few early reviews have come out this Summer. Mitch Davis talks about the story and Mandy's (Bettis) drug addiction: "for one, because she’s an addict, and the extra pay will go a long way. More importantly, she needs to go because it’s the hospital work that funds her habit.

The Fantasia International Film Festival has been serving up fresh and often visionary new voices in sci-fi, horror and other genres for nearly a quarter of a century, and this year’s 24th edition was no different — except, of course, it was all different.
Fantasia, which under normal circumstances physically takes place in Montreal in mid-summer, went online in 2020 for an all-digital edition that kicked off on August 20 and concluded on September 2. The event was a mix of films that were either available on demand at any time throughout the fest (up until a maximum ticket capacity was reached) or were designated to stream “live,” as it were, on one or two certain dates at specific times (also with a maximum ticket capacity).
Although press from around the world was invited to cover the festival, the entire program was geoblocked to Canadian ticket buyers only — which means that as a...

Screened as a selection of the virtual 2020 Fantasia Film Festival. Working is generally exhausting. Even if you love your job, it can still be draining. Every one of us has had a bad day at work, and it can be because of many different factors. However, I guarantee that you haven't had as horrible of a day at work as Mandy (Angela Bettis) in the film 12 Hour Shift. The second feature written & directed by actress Brea Grant (Best Friends Forever), is deeply entertaining and bloody. While engaging audiences with its sick sense of humor, 12 Hour Shift explores the world of a nurse going through the worst night of her life. With extreme edginess and wicked characters, this is my second favorite watch so far of this year’s Fantasia Film Festival. The film takes place in Arkansas back in 1999. Mandy, the main character, is a drug addict and...

As someone who loves movies that cover a specific time period where a central character has to deal with everything going totally sideways for them, 12 Hour Shift scratched that cinematic itch for me and delivers up a darkly comedic caper of sorts centered around organ trafficking taking place in a small town hospital in Arkansas. This is the second feature film from Brea Grant, and for as much as I enjoyed her debut movie Best Friends Forever, 12 Hour Shift proves that she’s grown in so many ways as a filmmaker over the last few years, and it makes me extremely excited about what the future holds for her career.

Starring Angela Bettis, David Arquette, Mick Foley, Chloe Farnworth, Kit Williamson, Tara Perry, & Nikea Gamby-Turner. Hitting VOD in October this fall. Few things are as scary as real life these days, but for those seeking more refined thrills and chills, this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival continues to provide the best in “genre” entertainment. While the “genre” moniker is wide-ranging enough to stir up images of everything from slasher films to kung fu epics, the annual Canadian festival has consistently stretched the concept to embrace all sorts of off-beat features that go somehow beyond the norm of mainstream cinema.
This year’s lineup is no different, encompassing not just terrifying horror movies and wild martial arts action, but true stories about unique people, unexpected romantic dramas, even a careful examination of how a cute cartoon frog became a symbol of hate. If it’s weird or wacky, it just might land at Fantasia.
This year’s festival runs August 20 through September 2, though it is only available online to Canadian audiences.
