In response to the online backlash he’s received for his criticism of President Joe Biden, Daily Show host Jon Stewart has decided to take a masterclass in speaking truth to power — and who better to emulate than his old pal Tucker Carlson?
It has been 19 years since the Daily Show host went on CNN’s Crossfire and took Carlson and co-host Paul Begala to task for fomenting partisan discord. After Carlson remarked that Stewart was funnier on his Comedy Central series, Stewart shot back, “You’re as big a d–k on your show as you are on any show.

Bill Maher was angry that certain messages get attention and certain others do not on his Friday Real Time show on HBO.
He led off with a prime example of that in an interview with Alexandra Pelosi (daughter of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi), the director and producer of the HBO Original documentary The Insurrectionist Next Door, which debuted October 15.
The film talks to several people who stormed the Capitol building on Jan. 6 about what brought them to Washington, D.C. on that fateful day, and whether their views have shifted since.
Maher noted that the people in the film are “remarkably relatable and likable.”
“It’s the forgotten man,” Pelosi said. “They fell behind this great American dream, they’re feeling left behind.”

Holidays were much on the mind of Real Time host Bill Maher on Friday. He talked about the Super Bowl, Election Day, and Valentine’s Day during the course of the show, starting right at the top by acknowledging this weekend’s big game.
“The game is in Arizona, so don’t be shocked if Republicans don’t accept the results,” he quipped, adding, “The game is on Fox, with aerial coverage by China.”
Maher quickly shifted back into his wheelhouse of politics, noting this weeks’s State of the Union address. “The state of our union is uncivil,” he claimed. “Republicans acted like it was a bachelorette party at a comedy club.”
Maher’s panel discussion with Kristen Soltis Anderson, pollster and host of SiriusXM’s “The Trendline with Kristen Soltis Anderson,” and Democratic strategist and CNN political contributor Paul Begala dove into the question of who will be...

Abortion is certainly no laughing matter, which makes it a delicate dance for a topical comedian to broach. Bill Maher worked both sides of the street on Friday night’s Real Time on HBO, starting with a few quips and then embarking on a serious discussion on the ultra-sensitive issue.
Starting with a riff on Cinco de Mayo – “If you can’t remember what you did last night, you might want to get an abortion now” – Maher noted several states with ultra-restrictive laws. “Suddenly, getting the right pronoun doesn’t seem so big.”
On the bright side, those in states with draconian abortion laws can use the car pool lane if driving to another territory, Maher said.
The panel discussion featured Democratic strategist and CNN political contributor Paul Begala and former NBC sports reporter and guest co-host for The View,” Michele Tafoya.

Former President Bill Clinton is launching a second season of his iHeart podcast Why Am I Telling You This? on Thursday, with singer-songwriter Jason Isbell as his first guest.
Among the topics in their wide-ranging conversation is that of Covid vaccine deniers and the challenge of changing their minds about taking the shots.
Isbell has been adamant about having a set of Covid protocols at his concerts that include proof of vaccinations or recent negative tests, something that drew scorn from some of his fans, with some performances canceled, yet praise from others.
In the new episode, which posted at midnight on Thursday, Isbell tells Clinton that performing with vaccine protocols in place “helps me do my job and be happy when I’m on stage and not be concerned and not be worried about people’s safety or about the kind of audience that I have, I just want...

Prof. Alan Dershowitz filed a libel suit against CNN on Tuesday, seeking $300 million for allegedly taking a quote out of context during the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.
Dershowitz defended Trump from the charge that he had abused his power by leaning on Ukraine to open an investigation of Joe Biden’s son. On Jan. 29, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, asked Dershowitz if it mattered whether there was a “quid pro quo.”
“The only thing that would make a quid pro quo unlawful is if the quo were in some way illegal,” Dershowitz argued. “If a president does something which he believes will help him get elected in the public interest, that cannot be the kind of quid pro quo that results in impeachment.”
Rep. Adam Schiff, who was leading the House impeachment case, immediately pounced on Dershowitz’s comment, saying that his position would give the president “carte blanche.

Bill Maher called the Clintons “huge distractions” and wondered Friday if and how the Democrats should deploy them in the presidential campaign.
“Now, Bill Clinton — people are saying that there are witnesses who saw him on Jeffrey Epstein’s sex island. Obviously it’s denied,” Maher said on HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher.
Guest Paul Begala shrugged it off. Said Maher, “You shake your head like that. ‘Oh, that’s impossible. Bill Clinton, a horny guy on sex island? Ridiculous…’ Look, it’s possible.”
Bill Clinton has credibility on the economy, “I’d use him for that,” offered Begala, who just wrote You’re Fired: The Perfect Guide to Beating Donald Trump. Maher didn’t seem convinced.
The host was already rattled by a retired colonel’s take on what a loss by President Trump might look like. Maher’s been preoccupied that Trump won’t leave if he loses.

CNN Contributor Paul Begala says he so against President Trump winning the 2020 election that he would vote for any Democratic he thought could beat him — even one who shot his dog.
“I am a JFK Democrat; I will pay any price, bear any burden, support any friend, oppose any foe to ensure the defeat of Donald J. Trump,” Begala told Chris Cuomo on his CNN program “Cuomo Primetime” on Monday. “You could be for Medicare for all or not, you could shoot my dog and if I think you could beat Trump, I’m going to be for you.”
“Well that is uh, very mainstream of you,” noted a visibly surprised Cuomo before moving on.
A rep for CNN did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Updated with video. Bill Maher closed a fairly by-the-book episode of HBO’s Real Time with an inspired anti-p.C. monologue linking leftist criticism of 2020 Democratic presidential candidates with attacks on this year’s Oscar Best Picture nominees for various sociopolitical reasons.
“This time, let’s not eat our own,” Maher suggested about the Democratic hopefuls, referencing the undermining of Hillary Clinton in 2016 by many Democrats. With the early field of candidates already being picked apart, he hit back and then slyly bridged to awards season. “This is a real problem in our society, looking to dump someone good because there must be someone more perfect,” he said. “And sometimes, what you end up with is, no one to host the Oscars at all.”
The Academy Awards, he declared, “are being ruined by these same kinds of ridiculous purity tests.” He rattled off a few examples, barely a week before...

Currently in a rebuilding phase after a precipitous slide from its former dominance of the cable-news world, CNN has been adding new on-air talent, such as former ABC News correspondent Jake Tapper, and is also reaching back into its past.

From 1982 until 2005, "Crossfire" was a mainstay of the network's daytime lineup, examining the news from the points of view of a politically liberal and a conservative pundit.
The first pairing was journalist and author Tom Braden ("Eight Is Enough") on the liberal side, and commentator, politician and broadcaster Pat Buchanan, as the conservative.

Later rosters for both the daytime show and a Sunday edition included Robert Novak, John Sununu, Tony Snow,...

CNN said Wednesday that it is bringing the political debate show Crossfire back on the air this fall with Newt Gingrich as one of the combatants.
The former House speaker and Republican presidential candidate will be one of the four regular hosts of the program, taking the conservative side along with commentator S.E. Cupp of The Blaze. Stephanie Cutter, a former campaign spokeswoman for President Barack Obama, and Van Jones, a Yale-educated attorney and advocate for green projects, will speak from the left.

In 2004, Jon Stewart appeared on CNN's Crossfire and famously declared to hosts Tucker Carlson and Paul Begala that the show was "hurting America." Soon after, CNN cancelled the show. But now nine years have passed and CNN clearly no longer cares who it hurts, because Crossfire is coming back. CNN has announced it will revive the rancorous political program this fall, even cutting down Wolf Blitzer Reads People's Tweets To You by a half hour to make room in its schedule. The network's biggest problem in reviving Crossfire is how to avoid the original's reputation ...

The internet was up in arms today after President Obama gaffed during a press conference on the sequester and created an entirely new science fiction telepathic power called the “Jedi Mind Meld.” Sci-fi nerds everywhere know the about the telepathic powers of Jedis in Star Wars and Vulcans in Star Trek but what about our esteemed CNN political pundits, David Frum and Paul Begala on CNN's Strategy Session with Wolf Blitzer?...

The country seemed pretty unanimous that Governor Romney won the first Presidential debate over President Obama a week ago. But is it so cut and dried in the Vice Presidential debate?
The consensus on Twitter seemed to be that Vice President Joe Biden won the debate. We saw criticism that Congressman Paul Ryan looked rattled or that he kept dodging the actual questions and giving answers that actually had very little to do with what was asked.

Some tweets we saw:
Paul Begala: "Biden is killing Ryan on Medicare and Social Security. Ryan is arguing ideology, Biden arguing facts."
Bill Maher: "Hello 9 1 1? There s an old man beating a child on my tv." and "This Biden guy is awesome! I hope he keeps that nice sleepy black guy on the ticket!"

There is little doubt that former President Bill Clinton’s speech during Wednesday night’s Democratic National Convention was nothing less than a barn-burner. “Loose and ebullient, sprinkling his text with ad libs, Clinton reminded viewers what a powerful speaker he is, and how his pleasure in speechifying can be contagious,” wrote EW’s Ken Tucker. “Obama has his work cut out for him night to top this.”
Clinton’s oratory had the added effect of blasting away the cobwebs from an evening of speeches from non-professional speakers that ranged from agreeably engaging to stilted and bland — in marked contrast...

Much has been said in the past two days about the motivations behind President Obama's new immigration move, though consensus has begun to form around describing it as a political move over a moral one. Whether that matters, however, is another question, and Paul Begala on last night's Anderson Cooper 360º made the point that playing politics with people's lives isn't a new thing to the presidency-- after all, Abraham Lincoln did it, too.

Chicago – With a wink and a smile, The Criterion Collection inducts Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker’s excellent “The War Room” into their arsenal eight months before the 2012 election. This riveting examination of the 1992 election from the winning side feels particularly relevant in today’s heated climate and the Blu-ray release also includes a stellar 2008 feature-length documentary called “Return to The War Room” in which the key players revisit the scene of the crime.
Blu-ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
Watching “The War Room” again one remembers the lightning in a bottle aspect of Clinton’s 1992 campaign. Seeing a glimpse of a young(er) Clinton is fascinating but the movie belongs to James Carville and George Stephanopoulos, the two men who really propelled Clinton into the White House. They were the right people at the right time for the right campaign. And the access granted to their influential and game-changing techniques was amazing. From...

James Carville campaigns in The War Room.
Directed by renowned cinema verité filmmakers D. A. Pennebaker (Monterey Pop) and Chris Hegedus (Kings of Pastry), the 1993 documentary film The War Room focuses on Bill Clinton’s successful 1992 presidential campaign.
The 1992 presidential election was a triumph not only for Clinton but also for the new breed of strategists who guided him to the White House and changed the face of politics in the process. In their behind-closed-doors account of the campaign, Pennebaker and Hegedus follow the brainstorming and bull sessions of Clinton’s crack team of consultants — especially the folksy James Carville and the preppy George Stephanopoulos, who became media stars in their own right as they injected a fresh spirit and spontaneity into the process of campaigning.

Tomorrow marks the fifth anniversary of the first New Year's Eve in which Anderson Cooper courageously accepted co-hosting CNN's last broadcast of the year with unpredictable comedienne Kathy Griffin, and she has yet to disappoint in the ways she inspires, as Cooper put it, "dread" in her co-host. Tonight she appeared on Anderson Cooper 360º to discuss tomorrow's ceremonies, and promised various stages of undress-- and possibly a drive-by disturbance of Paul Begala.

The punditry over "Weinergate" continues with Anderson Cooper last night trying to moderate a fair discussion of the controversy.
