Jenny Lewis has readied a new album called Joy’All. The project is out today, June 9th, via her new label Blue Note/Capitol Records.
A lot’s changed since Lewis’ last album, 2019’s On the Line — namely, a global pandemic that shut the world down and inspired the songwriter to approach music differently. Some songs on Joy’All predate Covid, while others came out of a world-class songwriting group Lewis joined, led by none other than Beck Hansen.
“I started writing some of these songs on the road, pre-pandemic… and then put them aside as the world shut down, and then from my home in Nashville in early 2021, I joined a week-long virtual songwriting workshop with a handful of amazing artists, hosted by Beck,” Lewis shared in a statement. “The challenge was to write one song every day for seven days, with guidelines from Beck. It was a star-studded family affair at the 2023 Grammys on Sunday night. As stars gathered at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles to celebrate music's biggest night, several of them were accompanied by their loved ones.
DJ Khaled brought his whole family, including wife Nicole Tuck and their two kids, Asahd and Aalam Khaled. Meanwhile, LL Cool J - who is slated to hit the stage for a special performance celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop - was accompanied by his wife, Simone Smith, and daughter Samaria Smith.
Despite their rumored new romance, Kelsea Ballerini - who is nominated for best country solo performance for "Heartfirst" - didn't bring Chase Stokes as her date. Instead, she was joined by her mom, Carla Ballerini. Others who brought their family along include Brandi Carlile, Future, and Beck Hansen.
As the 2023 Grammy Awards continue to ramp up, see all the celebrity families at the ceremony ahead.

Kanye West isn't too proud to admit when he's wrong, shockingly. In a lengthy profile with The Sunday Times, Kim Kardashian's hubby admits that he was wrong about dissing Beck at this year's Grammy Awards. "I'm fine to apologize for inaccuracies. You know, I send flowers to inaccuracies," he explained. "I talked to Beck's wife [Marissa Ribisi], and I think I had a point about Beyoncé's album, but I think I was inaccurate with the concept of a gentleman who plays 14 instruments not respecting artistry." And this isn't exactly the first time that Mr. West has backtracked on his notorious Grammy incident. He took to Twitter just a few...

Not many artists can mutate and evolve in music while maintaining their core audience, but Beck Hansen is one such artist. Originally lauded in the mid-’90s as the poster boy of the slacker generation, he managed to transcend these confines as well as the musical spectrum because of his insatiable drive to explore music to its very limits. The fact that he also did this with commercial and critical success is unique as increasingly more and more artists fall into either one or the other.
The space bound maestro has just released the first track off of his upcoming, as of yet untitled tenth studio release, the fantastically elastic ‘Dreams’. The song is a strong indicator that the album will be a celebration of eclecticism from one of the most versatile artists of this generation. His latest (long overdue) Album of the Year Grammy win for...

Well, this is a bit awkward. Kanye West stole the show and drew gasps and laughs at the 2015 Grammy Awards when he rushed the stage after Beck won Album of the Year for his 2014 record Morning Phase, marking a pseudo-reenactment of his infamous interruption of Taylor Swift's MTV VMAs acceptance speech. He told E! News after the Grammys that "Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé." The hip-hop star later clarified his remarks and also apologized online. Turns out, Beck, who was born Bek David Campbell, and Beyoncé share a connection—the alternative rocker's father, David Campbell, an arranger,...

It seems like everyone and their mother, including Kanye West, is talking about Beck since his big Album of the Year win at last night's Grammys. And even though the Morning Phase singer took home two awards Sunday, many people still seem somewhat unfamiliar with the music super-star, even though he's been making music for over two decades. So who exactly is Beck and what's his backstory? Here are five important things you should know about Beck (listen up Kanye, you should read this and get educated). 1. Stats: Beck hails from Los Angeles and was born Bek David Campbell. At 44 years old, he's released 12 studio albums. He's also a Cancer. 2. He's Married to a Famous...

Contrary to what you might think, Beck Has recently released new music. You just haven't been able to hear him perform it. Until now. The rock songwriter released "Beck Hansen’s Song Reader" last year, as sheet music-only; however, he and special guests like Jarvis Cocker, Beth Orton, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Franz Ferdinand, Joan as Police Woman, Villagers' Conor J O'Brien, Michael Kiwanuka, the Staves, James Yorkston and more will play the 20 songs written for the collection. Ed Harcourt and David Coulter "will provide musical direction," with Beck's house band consisting of drummer Seb Rochford, bassist Tom Herbert and guitarist Dave Okumu....

In 1991, a waifish high-school dropout named Beck Hansen was tooling around penniless in Los Angeles, bouncing between a video store in a strip mall, a garment factory in South Central, a movie theater, and a restaurant dish room. He also wrote and played music in coffee shops and small clubs. One of his songs, recorded on an 8-track with a $30 RadioShack microphone and a $60 guitar, began with a simple tinny slide riff and his speak-singing — “In the time of chimpanzees I was a monkey / Butane in my veins and I’m out to cut the junkie with the plastic eyeballs / Spray paint the vegetables” — into what would become — Yo, cut it — one of the more famous choruses in the history of popular music: Soy un perdedorI’m a loser baby,so why don’t you kill me? “I just thought it’s really interesting that you...

As in, it is really just a collection of sheet music that you will have to play yourself. McSweeney's will publish Beck Hansen's Song Reader this December; it will contain "twenty songs existing only as individual pieces of sheet music, never before released or recorded." Plus pretty pictures. Anyway, you have five months to learn how to play the recorder (or your Beck instrument of choice). Get cracking.

Funny Beck, blue Beck, rapping Beck. Fans got all three this week as the trailblazing singer-songwriter released a new single through Third Man Records with Jack White, and collaborated with Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) on a one-off posted to the rapper's website. As previously reported, Beck Hansen dropped by White's Third Man Nashville studio at the tail-end of a album recording mission, with White producing and guesting what would be "I Just Started Hating Some People Today" with B-Side saddy "Blue Randy." As was discussed in my interview with Third Man cohort Reggie Watts, the label loves to mix comedy...

Friday (July 8 ) is the 41st birthday of one Bek David Campbell, the multitasking musician/producer/artist/amateur Gutenberg better known to the world as Beck. This is somewhat shocking for several reasons, chief among them the fact that he doesn't look a day over 12.
And though his musical output has dwindled some in recent years (aside from, you know, his ongoing "Record Club" series and production work for Thurston Moore and Steven Malkmus ... like we said, dude's a multitasker), we here in the MTV Newsroom remain unabashed Beck fans, and we anxiously await the day he returns with the follow-up to 2008's moody Modern Guilt. Or, better yet, the spiritual sequel to '99's Midnite Vultures.
In fact, the mere mention of those two albums — and the musical disparity between them — pretty much sums up why we love Beck so much. He truly is a man for all seasons (and...

Yesterday, Thurston Moore released Demolished Thoughts, his fourth and inarguably best solo album in the three decades since he co-founded Sonic Youth. Unlike his previous song-oriented solo works, Demolished Thoughts finds its sound--lush, lonely, Beck Hansen-assisted rock, retextured with acoustics--and sticks with it from start to finish. After one of the most enviable and inspiring careers in indie rock, Moore continues to reinvent his image and offerings with unexpected approaches.
But it doesn't work for everyone; in fact, everyone probably shouldn't try it. Below, we look at five bandleaders who have yet to make a solo album, and why we hope it stays that way.
Steven Tyler: Several years ago, Guided by Voices frontman Robert Pollard released an infamous collection called Relaxation of the Asshole, a best-of culled from the worst of his drunken banter. Even if you dislike his band, it's sort of an essential one-time listen.

For his fourth solo album, "Demolished Thoughts," Thurston Moore enlisted the ridiculously talented Scientologist, Beck Hansen, to produce. Predictably, the results are stunning. Moore could string a guitar with his dirty shoestrings and craft something beautiful, or terrifying, at least truly interesting and worth giving a listen too. This record's shaping up to be even more than that.
One can imagine if the Velvet Underground had survived as a band into this decade, they may have cut a song something like "Benediction," the first song released off the record earlier this month (below). The latest song "Circulation," is a triumph of violins, off kilter guitars and that old familiar Sonic Youth kind of songcraft, dangerous and pretty. As Pitchfork notes, all you have to do is "like" Thurston Moore to hear it, here.
"Demolished Thoughts" was recorded in La and Northampton, Ma over the past fall and winter. The record releases Tuesday May 24, on Matador.

Beck Hanson has always been aninnovator. The indie musician officially hit the scene in 1993 with his firststudio album Golden Feelings. He’s managed to sustain a career over the last 18years with a loyal following of hipsters. But like everyone else in the recordindustry, he’s also had to adapt to the changing times.
Like The Flaming Lips, Weezer and afew other tech-friendly artists, Beck has learned to embrace the internet asone of the weapons in his arsenal. On his site beck.com, he does the typicalupdates on breaking news, music videos and buyable merch for sale. But he alsohosts artists’ exhibitions on the Colorspace page and posts interviews that thesinger-songwriter has conducted with musicians like CaetanoVeloso and actors suchas Will Ferrell.
But the real destination at Beck.comis the Record Club. As the site explains the special channel, “is an informalmeeting of various musicians to record an album in a day.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World week is finally here! Spinner has kindly allowed both the score and the soundtrack to Edgar Wright‘s latest to stream in its entirety. The original score by Nigel Godrich is just beautiful, as it is seamlessly infested with videogame influences. He also had some help by Beck Hansen, Cornelius, Dan Nakamura, Kid Koala, David Campbell, Danny Goffey, Gaz Coombes, Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Joey Waronker, and Gus Seyffert. As for the soundtrack is is completely rockin’ and definitely worth a listen (and many more).

On July 8 of every year, Beck (born Bek David Campbell) celebrates his birthday. This year, he turns the big 4-0. This is a big deal for a number of reasons, mostly because 40 tends to be a seminal age in a man's life and also because Beck is probably my favorite singer of all time.
When I was a teenager, I was so obsessed with Beck that I celebrated his birthday every year. There was no serious fanfare — it would usually involve getting a slice or an ice cream and saying something to the effect of, "This is for you, future husband! Happy happy!"
This morning, I celebrated by listening to his most perfect work: 1996's Odelay, an album I loved so much growing up I burned through three copies of it on cassette. (For the kids in the audience, those were like mini VHS' that were ... oh,...

The Us Weekly readers who know freak-folk musician Devendra Banhart as the hippie-haired beardo on the arm of Natalie Portman probably won't recognize him now. The Portman thing ended a while ago, for one. Plus he's wearing glasses these days, prescribed to him when he started getting headaches from poring over his miniscule drawings for a recent art exhibition, he explains in a call from his home in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles. Also, he'll begin a tour next week to support his latest album, What Will We Be, with a scandalously short-cropped do. "It's like a lesbian librarian," he jokes.
Along with the new bookish look, he's coming out as an accomplished visual artist--his second career that technically came first. His first album The Charles C. Happy birthday to Beck, who turns 39 years old today. The man born Bek David Campbell (later Beck Hansen) has been an MTV staple since his first big breakout with “Loser” in 1994. Beck has always had a pretty stunning visual sense — his videos for “E-Pro” and “Think I’m In Love,” though not seen by many people, still try to extend the video as an art form. His musical focus has always seesawed between stoic neo-folk and raucous electro mash-ups, but it’s his first hit that remains a perfect distillation of what we love about Beck: The marble-mouthed croon, the nods to funk, the grittiness of it all.
Incidentally, more than a few people here in the Newsroom have a deep history with the original Beck, as James Montgomery’s Im name is built around the man and Rya Backer had a Beck-themed bat mitzvah. Here’s to them, and...

Stars Shine at MTV Telethon
Alicia Keys, Rob Thomas, Beck, Kanye West and Sheryl Crow were among the stars who made emotional studio performances for an MTV Hurricane Katrina telethon on Saturday night, while other big names offered special tour tunes from across North America. Green Day taped a performance in Foxboro, Massachusetts, The Rolling Stones paid tribute to the hurricane victims from the stage in Milwaukee, Coldplay phoned in their performance from New York and Pearl Jam played Given To Fly on tour in Saskatoon, Canada. During the slick four-and-a-half hour live show, U2, Sir Elton John and Sir Paul McCartney also beamed in performances from tour stops in Toronto, Canada, and Miami, Florida, respectively. But it was the show's collaborations from studios set up in New York, Nashville, Tennessee and Los Angeles, which made the somber evening a special one. Kid Rock performed a stirring "Sweet Home Alabama" with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Linkin Park's Chester Bennington hooked up with Motley Crue for a rendition of the latter's "Home Sweet Home" and Neil Young and Emmylou Harris ended the telethon with a powerful version on "Walking To New Orleans." Other highlights included Red Hot Chili Peppers' performance of "Under The Bridge," Beck's cover of "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes" and a tune from American Idol star Kelly Clarkson, who fought health problems to perform "Shelter" in Los Angeles. The commercial-free telethon, which also featured messages from stars like Jennifer Lopez, Usher, Shakira and Dennis Quaid, was one of three held in America this weekend to raise funds for the victims of the hurricane.

According to the Los Angeles Daily News, Damon was spotted kissing and cuddling Winona at their local Los Angeles restaurant. They originally split several months ago and in recent weeks Damon was reported to be dating Penelope Cruz while Ryder was said to be seeing Christopher Noth. However, the New York Daily News claims wacky rocker Beck is helping Winona get over her split from Hollywood heart-throb Damon. Beck broke up with stylist Leigh Limon last month, his girlfriend of nine years, and has been seen out and about with Ryder in Los Angeles.
