"Winning is an addiction, Jtro!" Get ready for a sequel to that cult indie sci-fi film that you didn't see! The first teaser trailer has arrived for Beats of Rage, a sequel to The Fp, a cult sci-fi film about a futuristic world where winning the Dance-Dance-Revolution arcade game is the greatest glory. Jason Trost writes, directs, produces, and stars in this sequel as Jtro, who hung up his boots at the end of The Fp. He's back, however, just like all great 80's post-apocalyptic sequels and must venture into "The Wastes" to train again to defeat a bro known as Ak-47. Jason is solo directing this, separating from his brother Brandon, as the two made the original film together as the Trost Brothers (Brandon is now working as a Dp on other films). The cast of Beats of Rage includes Art Hsu, Mike O'Gorman, Nick Principe, Tallay Wickham, Brandon Barrera,...

The Fp
Stars: Jason Trost, Lee Valmassy, Art Hsu, Caitlyn Folley, Nick Principe, Brandon Barrera, James DeBello, Sean Whalen, James Remar | Written by Brandon Trost, Jason Trost | Directed by Brandon Trost, Jason Trost
It seems everyone and their uncle is trying to make instant cult movies these days. Whether they be grindhouse-inspired genre flicks or retro movies that throwback to the heyday of VHS, it seems “cult” is the new cool. However trying to make a cult film and succeeding at making a cult film are two very different things…
Thankfully The Fp falls into the later category, with what can only be described as a mash-up of Escape From New York and Step Up!
Set in a dystopian future, where a relentless turf war rages. The Fp sees two rival gangs feud for control of the rural wasteland Frazier Park (the Fp of the title) in the deadly arena...

Chicago – “The Fp,” playing in midnight shows this weekend at Music Box and in various arthouse theaters around the country, is a hard movie to put your finger on. Is it just bad like “Birdemic” or “The Room” or is it something “trying” to be bad? Is it a spoof of bad movies or just a bad movie? Does it matter? Either way, “The Fp” works for its audience, a rowdy crowd of midnight movie fans willing to put up with over-the-top silliness, bad performances, and general lunacy. It’s essentially an extended short film that doesn’t even justify its short running time but audiences on its wavelength will eat it up.
One has to give the team behind “The Fp” major credit for sticking to their ridiculous vision from first frame to last. Their movie is totally goofy and I don’t mean that as insulting as it may sound.

We live in an era in which talented filmmakers sometimes trade in creativity and taking chances for remakes, reboots and 3-D gimmicks. We get it -- they're a giant cash cow. Leave it up to the up-and-comers to make unique and rare movies that won't be seen by even a small portion of the people who saw "Clash of the Titans." At least we know those crazy ones still exist.
Right now those hungry men are Brandon and Jason Trost, the duo that has made the most bonkers independent movie of this year -- a movie about living the somewhat thug life called "The Fp."
"The Fp" is bats**t crazy. Here's the synopsis (bear with us, it gets weird). The film is set in a post-apocalyptic future in the Fp, known to you and me as Frazier Park. There's famine, overpopulation and disease, and the people and streets are...

A film that feels cobbled together from a "Dance Dance Revolution" arcade machine, that graffiti-covered white room where Will Smith shot music videos during his 'Fresh Prince' days and the desperate need to create a new pop culture catchphrase, “The Fp” is a singular pastiche of hip-hop nostalgia, smalltown escapism and dystopian absurdity. But the raw materials from which brothers Brandon and Jason Trost assemble their first feature are so specific that the end result may have trouble appealing to a wider audience, especially if viewers aren’t willing to embed their tongue so deeply in their cheek that they practically choke on it. A fun and ambitious if over-the-top and overlong comedy about a world where gangs work out their differences via dance fights to the death, “The Fp” is one of the most unique films made in years, but that novelty value also often makes it more of...

The Fp
Directed by Brandon & Jason Trost
Screenplay by Brandon Trosh
2011, USA
A completely straight-faced parody/tribute with an amalgam of pop-culture signifiers, boasting the slogan “Shit’s tough in the Fp,” this certifiably offbeat campfest takes aim at many different targets -video game culture, inner city gangs, Hip Hop slang, ravers, techno music and even underdog sports films.
The film opens with an early-80′s-style scroll and narration to set the tone: a vaguely post-apocalyptic near future (or alternate universe), where gangs compete for street cred by battling each other with a bastardized version of Dance Dance Revolution not-too-subtly called Beat Beat Revolution. For years an underground war has raged for dominance over the small town of Frazier Park between two clans: The 248 from the north and the 245 from the south. When Jtro (Jason Trost) loses his brother Btro (Brandon Barrera) in a Beat Beat Revolution match, he swears...

One thing I’ve learned in film school is that family is essential. Whether it’s to fill the gap in your budget, run an errand while you’re shooting or loan you some tools from the garage, making filmmaking a family affair is an asset, and Jason Trost’s got three of them. Not only did he write, direct and star in The Fp, but his brother co-wrote, co-directed and shot the film, his father executive produced it and his sister was the costume designer. The Fp focuses on Jtro (Trost), the brother of the iconic Beat Beat Revolution competitor Btro (Brandon Barrera). When Btro loses his life in the midst of a [ Read More ]...

Drafthouse Films, in preparation for a March 16 limited release, has teased the first 10 minutes of The Fp online. A futuristic dance-battle for a territory known as Frazier Park, The Fp somehow combines The Warriors and Mad Max with Blade Runner, Breakin. and Tron. It probably has to be seen to be believed, so give the following Nsfw clip a spin: As early trailers already established, the foul-mouthed Fp details a grudge-match battle between rival gangs: The 245 from the South and the 248 from the North. Instead of knives and guns, however, these gangbangers meet in deadly arcades and compete in something called .Beat-Beat Generation.. The clip sets up the death of legendary dancer Btro (Brandon Barrera) during Omega Gangsta Mode, who eventually will have to be avenged by Jtro (co-director Jason Trost). .Yo 248! Check out your hero now!. The Fp was the talk of 2011.s SXSW festival, and has built up...

Drafthouse Films presents a pulse-pounding feature that takes you into the fierce and fearsome realm of Frazier Park, better known to its wily locals as The Fp. This is a dystopian wasteland where rage-filled gangs take their brutal battles to the streets in the form of the ultimate dance-fight video game "Beat-Beat Revelation." But the underground rivalry between the 248 and the 245 rises to a bloody new level of carnage when local hero Btro (Brandon Barrera) is slain while busting moves against the golden-grilled L Dubba E (Lee Valmassy). Devastated by the loss of his beloved older brother and dancing mentor, 248er Jtro (Jason Trost) goes into hiding, and when he emerges a year later, discovers the town he once called his own is very nearly a place without hope. Now Jtro must face off against the two-stepper who killed his brother in an epic dance showdown that will determine the...

"Hey L Dubba E, I challenge you to a beat off!" Today's indie trailer is a red band for a film called The Fp, directed by the Trost Brothers being distributed by Drafthouse Films. It's essentially The Warriors meets Dance Dance Revolution, the video game, in some crazy dark comedy mayhem. Director Jason Trost also stars as Jtro with Lee Valmassy as L Dubba E, Art Hsu, Caitlyn Folley, Nick Principe and Brandon Barrera as Btro. This actually looks surprisingly good, like a great cult classic in the making. There's a lot of good humor in it. Though I do think this trailer shows pretty much everything up until the end, maybe too much. The two reactions I’ve heard to The Fp have either been in the territory of “it’s a lot of fun” or “it’s completely unwatchable.” Appropriate, then, that my reaction to the red band trailer, from IGN (via AICN), shifted between “this looks kind of entertaining” to “oh, you have got to be kidding me.” (Not in a positive sense.)
So while I could find merit in certain parts that are being sold here — the cinematography and gritty production design, primarily — something about the pitch and tone of everything else is just… grating. I’d love to be wrong here; something that can successfully create an over-the-top sensibility appeals to and entertains me on a very base level. But if it’s anything like this preview, The Fp will have already lost me.

Three posters for three very different movies were all premiered on the world wide web today, and instead of going about my usual opening banter, let’s get right to them.
First up, we bring you the official poster for The Fp courtesy of Movies.com. The movie premiered at last year’s South by Southwest to good reviews (including my own, wink) and Drafthouse Films, the distribution arm of movie chain Alamo Drafthouse, quickly picked it up. On top of that, BadassDigest (also associated with the Drafthouse) also reported the official release date, which has been set for March 16th. It will only be limited, however; for a complete list of theaters head over to Badass Digest, and see the poster below:

I was going to write an article about the news Matthew Vaughn is going to direct the sequel to X-Men: First Class, but quite frankly I don't care. All that means is that Vaughn won't be directing something more interesting. So... yeah... Whatever. However, a new press release landed in my inbox that I was originally going to ignore until I saw Vince over at Film Drunk slathering it with all the inappropriate words I've come to expect and admire him for. The film is The Fp and it was just picked up for distribution by Drafthouse Films who will also be bringing you the excellent Foreign Language nominee Bullhead in just over two weeks on February 17. The Fp is short for Frazier Park from which co-directors and brothers Jason and Brandon Trost originate and Vince describes it as "probably the best quasi-dystopian hero's journey set in the world of...

We're always grateful when filmmakers take a moment out of their schedule to share their stories with Tmp. This week at the Austin Film Festival we were able to sit down with Writer/Director/Actor Blayne Weaver and a few cast members from his new film '6 Month Rule'.
Congratulations on the world premiere of your new film 6 Month Rule. Could you tell us a little bit about it?
Blayne - It’s about a guy who’s kind of a womanizer and he comes up with these rules on how to avoid emotional commitment which he actually feels is the biggest mistake you can make. His best friend gets dumped by his fiancée so my character kind of takes him under his wing trying to lead him down this path of cynicism and avoiding any kind of emotional attachment.
What is the backstory of the film? As in, what inspired the story?...

Ah snap! You just stepped into The Fp! This is the place where pride is measured by street cred and scores are settled in the ultimate competition: The Revelation. When the greatest competitors around, the guys from the 248, decide to accept the challenge of those dastardly 245’ers, everyone expects the 248 to arise victorious. The champion of the 248, Btro (Brandon Barrera), arrives ready for battle and fully prepared to take down the evil leader of the 245: L Dubba E (Lee Valmassy). He brings along his brother, and protégée, Jtro (Jason Trost) to take down another 245 soldier in an opening bout; which he does with ease. But in a nasty turn of events, L Dubba E beats Btro so savagely in the tournament that he ends up dead. With his hero slain, Jtro vows never to compete again and leaves the Fp. Months later, an old friend catches up with Jtro and beseeches him to return home; enlightening...
