For me, Black History Month is best illustrated by my 92-year-old grandmother Ella Queen Johnson’s recall of our family stories. She shares these stories knowing that the wider world lacks a true and full recognition of the African American family legacy. For most of her long life, she has known that she should not look for depth and dimension in film and television as it relates to families like ours. This is the very reason why she told our history to us herself. My grandmother is a dynamic woman who is not formally trained as a teacher or a historian, but nonetheless, she is both. I am drawn to distributing films created by indie Black filmmakers through Array as a continuation of her calling. By supporting storytellers in the telling of their truths, I am celebrating a great legacy and making my grandmother proud.

Opening four years ago in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Metrograph has been a bastion for cinephiles. Since the pandemic hit in mid-March, causing all movie theaters in the city and beyond to shut down and rethink their plans, this specific theater had been relatively quiet in what lies on the road ahead. Well, it turns out they were planning something quite exciting.
Metrograph has now launched Metrograph Digital, premiering this Friday, July 24. Available nationwide, it’s a membership-based program for $5 a month or $50 annually, with previous NYC-based members already included at no cost. The first initiative is Metrograph Live Screenings, “a celebration of communal movie watching” which features a specific time where films will screen digitally, and also include intros, pre-show material, and Q&As. These presentations will be available on a live stream player, watchable on any computer and mobile device, and connectable to TVs. If you miss the initial broadcast,...

As a “normal” moviegoing world continues remains uncertain, quick-thinking adaptation has become the name of the name. New York City’s Metrograph, both a beloved boutique theater and growing distribution label, is leaning into that ethos with the July 24 launch of its Metrograph Digital, a platform that seeks to combine the joy of in-person moviegoing with the safety of at-home viewing.
The first Metrograph Digital initiative set to roll out is Metrograph Live Screenings, which will unspool this week with “a rotating selection of new releases and repertory titles, opening at set showtimes, with introductions, pre-show material, and Q&As specific to every show.” The program will include works by Claire Denis, Éric Rohmer, St. Clair Bourne, Ulrike Ottinger, Alain Resnais, Djibril Diop Mambéty, Satoshi Kon, Laurie Anderson, and Manfred Kirchheimer. Starting July 31, photographer and activist Nan Goldin will become the first guest programmer with a new series crafted to accompany her latest film,...

As a way to keep audiences enlightened and entertained during social distancing and quarantine, Ava DuVernay’s Array will launch #ArrayMatinee on April 1. The new weekly digital film series will include independent films from Array Releasing’s roster of global features.
Every subsequent Wednesday after April 1, Array will showcase five films from their slate. Viewers and cinephiles will be able to “watch and tweet” to engage and connect with each other — while using the #ArrayMatinee hashtag of course.

"There is a freedom tide rising in our hemisphere." Array has released an official trailer for a documentary titled The House on Coco Road, from filmmaker Damani Baker. The documentary profiles Baker's own family that moved away from Oakland, California in the 1980s only to end up directly inside the Grenada Revolution, which America was involved with. The film features first hand accounts from activists including Angela Davis, Fania Davis and Fannie Haughton. It also has a score by musician/songwriter Meshell Ndegeocello. This looks like another powerful, eye-opening doc about racism and the struggle for justice in America - including going all the way to Grenada to make a point. I'm very curious about seeing this doc. Here's the official trailer (+ posters) for Damani Baker's The House on Coco Road, direct from YouTube: Set amidst the Grenada Revolution, The House on Coco Road documents one family's flight from racial tensions in 1980's Oakland,...

If you are a fan of documentary film then Damani Baker’s name should be immediately familiar to you as one-half of the directing team on “Still Bill,” the 2009 feature length doc on legendary soul music singer Bill Withers and easily one of the best music-based documentaries of the last decade. On a whole his career spans documentaries, music videos, museum installations and advertisements and he is also an alum of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces in Independent Film” But despite his focus on the work of others, as often occurs, it’s the most personal projects that take on the greatest significance. Reflecting and retracing his family’s exploits in early 1980’s revolutionary...

The Alamo Guide
for March 4th, 2010
Ah March… the sun is shining, the trees are greening and people from all over the world are about to invade our fair city for SXSW and give us their money. You gotta love the few weeks of spring we get in Texas. Pretty soon it’s going to be hot as balls. Sure, it’ll drop down to 35 probably at some point, but worry not, it’ll be 80 the next day.If you haven’t been into the theater since last week, we put our new Spring Menu Specials up! They are crazy tasty, and come highly recommended from everyone at Alamo HQ. Some of those specials are for the big opener this weekend, Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland In 3D! I’ve loved Tim Burton for years, and I love Alamo feasts, so you can find me at the Alice Five-course Feast next Wednesday.
