Exclusive: Haley Elizabeth Anderson has wrapped production on Jazzy Jumpers, a documentary she was tapped to direct for Indigenous Media, P&g Studios and A Seed & Wings Productions.
The film tells the story of the Brownsville, Brooklyn-based Double Dutch Team Jazzy Jumpers, headed up by Coach Toni Veal, watching as this group — which has, in recent years, attracted national media coverage — works to defend their World Championship title from their headquarters bordering a public housing complex.
This is the first project on which P&g and Indigenous have partnered, as well as the first feature to emerge from 60 Second Docs, the latter’s three-time Webby Award-winning label, which has to date put out around 1,000 short documentaries about the world’s most interesting and unusual characters. Anderson came to the film as an alum of P&g’s Queen Collective, a longstanding program developed in partnership with Queen Latifah, Flavor Unit Entertainment...

“Ape,” a psychological thriller directed by Josh Hutcherson (“The Hunger Games,” “The Kids Are Alright”), debuted today on the Conde Nast-owned digital platform The Scene. The fifteen-minute film stars Hutcherson as a schizophrenic teen battling hallucinations, with a script by Jon Johnstone.
The film is part of a new emerging filmmakers initiative from Conde Nast Entertainment, Indigenous Media, and Josh and Michelle Hutcherson’s Turkeyfoot Productions, called The Big Script. Citing an increase in major studio tent pole films, The Big Script aims to find and produce “independently created content that can thrive on digital/emerging platforms” and is “driven by unique voices.”

Partnering with The Black List script database, the five films were chosen from over 2,000 submissions, with the only requirement being that the film feature characters in their late teens to late twenties.

Digital production company Indigenous Media -- which is behind projects like the Andrea Russett-starring Snapchat horror feature Sickhouse and an incubator initiative with Hunger Games actor Josh Hutcherson dubbed The Big Script, has tapped industry veteran John Zhang as its new Evp of marketing.
Previously, Zhang served as VP of marketing at DanceOn, where he oversaw audience development and network growth, as well as marketing, PR, and social media. In his new role, Zhang will report to Indigenous’ COO, Jake Avnet, and will be tasked with overseeing the promotional rollout of the studios’ recently-launched 60 Second Docs series of minute-long documentaries targeting the social media set, as well as its forthcoming Sickhouse sequel.

The first feature-length movie released on Snapchat was just the tip of the iceberg for Indigenous Media, which is following up “Sickhouse” — which it produced on the social media platform — by turning to documentaries. The aptly named “60 Second Docs” is a new web series profiling eccentric real-life characters in just one minute. Its tagline: “Life. One minute at a time.”
The first installment, which premiered on June 1, is available on Facebook, YouTube and VidMe. The latest episode was released today. Already, the series has gained significant momentum, with over two million views to date.

The company has developed the idea out of its recent experiences with short-form content. “Since they’re so easy to consume, we found that people go down the rabbit hole,” said Indigenous COO Jake Avnet by phone.

In the projects it has revealed thus far, such as its incubator program The Big Script, Indigenous Media has trended toward long-form productions. With its latest initiative, however, the studio launched by Jon Avnet, Jake Avnet, and Rodrigo Garcia is going short. It has launched 60 Second Docs, a series of one-minute documentaries that designed for social media distribution.
With 60 Second Docs, Indigenous is emulating content producers like Newsy and NowThis, which have made short, newsworthy, and (most importantly) shareable videos into their bread-and-butter. Indigenous is combining that format with the sort of offbeat subject matter offered by companies like Great Big Story and Vice. The most recent 60 Second Doc, for example, profiles a California man who dresses up like a tree and wanders around the Venice boardwalk.
60 Second Docs soft-launched in June, and according to Indigenous, the series has already received more than 3.5 million views across Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and VidMe.

Made-for-mobile feature film Sickhouse, a horror flick that debuted on social media star Andrea Russett’s Snapchat account, was so successful that it’s getting a sequel. “The sequel to Sickhouse will reinvent the franchise and will begin when audiences least expect it so as to once again blur the lines between reality and fiction,” the film’s producer, Indigenous Media, said in a release.
Indigenous did not disclose the plot of the film or any casting details, so as to create a similar effect as to when Russett’s Snapchat account, without any warning, turned into a fictional horror film between April 29 and May 3.
“Andrea’s fans, horror lovers, and social media mavens alike have all embraced Sickhouse,” said Indigenous Media COO Jake Avnet in a statement. “Viewership has demonstrated an appetite for content on the platforms where audiences spend their time. The model for the production, distribution and marketing of films is changing.

A horror film that first arrived in an unconventional manner is now set for a more traditional release. Sickhouse, which stars social media influencers Andrea Russett and Sean O’Donnell and is produced by Indigenous Media, is now available for pre-order through Vimeo On Demand after first launching as a series of Snapchat videos.
Sickhouse’s plot is rather conventional: It follows a group of friends who head into the woods and encounter a deadly secret. The film was unique, however, in terms of its release, with an Indigenous press release describing it as “made-for-mobile.” Between April 29th and May 3rd, a series of Snaps shot in real time told the film’s story to Russett and O’Donnell’s followers. As that rollout is now complete, a longer “Director’s Cut” will now be available on Vimeo. That version retails for $5.99 and will be available for download beginning on June 1st.

In November 2015, digital production studio Indigenous Media and Hunger Games co-star Josh Hutcherson announced an incubator project that would take scripts provided by Hollywood’s Black List and turn them into digital shorts. At the Tribeca Film Festival, Indigenous co-founder Jake Avnet and Hutcherson provided an update on their incubator. They have now found the five scripts they will adapt, and production on at least one of those projects will begin in May, with an expected summertime release.

Thanks to a new incubator, five screenwriters will see their work adapted into short films. Indigenous Media, a multi-platform studio founded in 2014 by Jon Avnet, Jake Avnet, and Rodrigo Garcia, has teamed up with actor Josh Hutcherson and his studio Turkeyfoot Productions for a filmmaking project that will source its screenplays from Hollywood’s Black List.
The Black List, which releases a new edition each year, catalogs the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. For the new incubator, screenwriters are invited to submit their work to the Black List, and the five submissions chosen by Indigenous and Hutcherson will be adapted into short films, with potential for feature-length adaptations down the line. Specifically, the incubator will work with stories centered around characters in their teens and early twenties.
Hutcherson himself will direct one of the five short films born from the incubator. Indigenous will handle funding; it has committed at least $100,000 to the projects.

Apparently, the success of the female-centric Wigs channel isn’t enough for its creators, because they want to take things to the next level. Filmmakers Jon Avnet, Jake Avnet, and Rodrigo Garcia are starting a new digital media production company which has already received investments from Wpp and the UK broadcasting company ITV. The production company, called Indigenous Media, plans to create original content and develop content brands across multiple, global platforms. Indigenous will specialize, among other formats, in scripted half-hour to hour-long series, with Wpp and ITV providing advertising and distribution aid. “Shortly after the launch of Wigs, Peter Tortorici [of Wpp] approached us with his vision for the potential of scripted content on digital platforms,” stated Jon Avnet in the release. “We agreed and now are working to scale this model with our new investors.” “As digital media continues to evolve and new models for content creation and distribution emerge and proliferate,...

Wigs was one of the original recipients of a very large check from YouTube back in 2011 when the video sharing site first launched its Original Channels Initiative. Since then, the collection of dramatic, online video stories created by Jon Avnet (Black Swan, Fried Green Tomatoes, Risky Business), Rodrigo Garcia (Albert Nobbs, In Treatment, Big Love), and Jake Avnet has gone on to encompass “15 high-end original series, 7 short films and 10 documentaries” all featuring well-known females in leading roles. The production shop has also received funding from Fox. Meanwhile, YouTube has removed all references to its Original Channels Initiative and isn’t funding new programming the same way it once was. With an influx of cash from a major broadcast network and performances from traditional talent like Julia Stiles, Troian Bellisario, Jennifer Beals, Jennifer Garner, Virginia Madsen, Dakota Fanning, and more, it’s not surprising that Wigs is ditching YouTube for Hulu.

Avnet, a prominent producer whose credits include "Risky Business," "Fried Green Tomatoes" and "Black Swan," co-founded Wigs with son Jake Avnet and "In Treatment" creator Rodrigo García in 2012. Since then, Wigs has produced more than 150 episodes of scripted content. The Wigs-Black List initiative is the first of its kind. The BlackList will be accepting submissions through Tuesday, May 6. Following evaluation, they will present Wigs with a shortlist of five writers for consideration to receive said development.

Miles Fisher, star of various online shorts (including "Pinkberry: The Movie"), scored the leading role in Warner Bros. and New Line's forthcoming Final Destination 5, arriving in theaters August 12. Even with his big screen debut just weeks away, Fisher is continuing with his love for parodies delivering "New Romance," a Final Destination 5 viral video that spoofs the classic '80s kids show "Saved By the Bell". The short was comes from American Psycho producer Jake Avnet and director Dave Green. Make sure you stick with it because the deaths begin about halfway through... In this fifth installment, Death is just as omnipresent as ever, and is unleashed after one mans premonition saves a group of coworkers from a terrifying suspension bridge collapse. But this group of unsuspecting souls was never supposed to survive, and, in a terrifying race against time, the ill-fated group frantically tries to discover a way to escape.

Deadline has written about the humorous short-film exploits of Miles Fisher, who played the superagent in the spoof Pinkberry: The Movie, and starred in other shorts that included an American Psycho musical parody. All this came before Fisher got his first big movie lead in Final Destination 5, and a supporting role in J. Edgar. Just because he's gone legit doesn't mean Fisher has left parodies in his past. In fact, after he went to Warner Bros with an idea for a short that could help spread awareness of its upcoming Final Destination, the studio gave him the money to make the film. Fisher put together his American Psycho producer Jake Avnet and director Dave Green and they've made New Romance. It's a short that manages to keep the body count high, and it looks to me like some horrifying homage to Saved By the Bell. Check it out:...
