Exclusive: Taylor John Smith (Where The Crawdads Sing) is attached to star in What’s Left of Us, based on the 2009 memoir by Ritchie Farrell who has adapted for screen.
The project marks the next directing effort of The Fighter and Patriot’s Day scribe Paul Tamasy who most recently made his directorial debut on Paramount acquisition Depravity, also starring Smith.
What’s Left of Us charts the tough upbringing of Farrell in a working class neighbourhood in Massachusetts. To overcome a birth defect, his father pushed him to become a star athlete – sometimes he would use a belt as a teaching tool. Once, he used an electric carving knife. By the time he was 30, he was a heroin addict, stealing from friends, shooting up during visits to his children and running from shameful family secrets.

Now entering the final stages of pre-production, The Wrap is reporting that Peter Berg’s Boston marathon drama Patriots’ Day has carried out what is surely the last casting spree before filming gets underway, this time adding Michael Beach, Alex Wolff and Themo Melikidze to its jam-packed ensemble.
According to the outlet, it is the latter two actors that will be playing the role of the radicalized terrorists (Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev) who brought the city of Boston to a standstill in April of 2013. Beach, on the other hand – best known for his recurring role of Pike in The 100 – is on board to portray Deval Patrick, the “governor of Massachusetts when terrorists struck the annual event in 2013.”
Since Berg and his Lone Survivor cohort Mark Wahlberg hatched Patriots’ Day, there’s been a flurry of activity surrounding the project, which quickly found a home at CBS Films and Lionsgate.

Still reeling from the box office failure of his critically derided historical thriller Child 44, director Daniel Espinosa has departed the Boston Marathon bombing drama Boston Strong.
Creative differences were cited as the reason for the split, though no details were available as to what those differences entailed. Espinosa, who broke out with 2010’s Easy Money and went on to helm action hit Safe House, has been going through a rough patch lately; Child 44 was reportedly a monster to tackle in the editing room, and even with extensive post-production work, it became a high-profile disappointment for Lionsgate.

If you're going to make a movie about one of Boston's darkest hours, you'd better cast local, right? Right. Calling Casey Affleck! Variety reports Casey Affleck is now attached to star in the docudrama about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. He will also produce alongside John Ridley (12 Years A Slave), and Dorothy Aufiero (The Fighter). The movie may well be titled Boston Strong, after the non-fiction book by Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge on which it is based. The Fighter screenwriters Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasy penned the spec script, which focuses on the massive manhunt that followed the bombings, as well as exploring how the people of Boston reacted to this tragedy. At present, it's unclear what role Affleck will play in the narrative. Casey Affleck was born in Falmouth, Massachusetts, but he and his family have strong ties to Boston. His father Timothy Byers Affleck worked at the Theater...

Casey Affleck has signed on to produce and star in a movie centred around the Boston Marathon Bombings of 2013. The film will be based on the book Boston Strong by Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge, with a screenplay from The Fighter scribes Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasy. The pair optioned the rights to the book back in July 2013 and were originally planning to develop it as a TV series with EOne Entertainment onboard to produce. After that deal collapsed, they took the project to Affleck, who’ll not only star but co-produce the movie with his working partners, John Ridley and Dorothy Aufiero.
While the book has yet to be published, the subject matter is well known. During the 2013 Boston Marathon, a series of bombs disrupted the race, injuring many innocent civilians. One of the city’s biggest manhunts then began as officials sought to apprehend those responsible for the tragic event.

With "Smash" coming to an end, Katharine McPhee is looking to make the transition from the small screen to the silver one with Depravity, a suspense thriller that arrives with a pretty decent pedigree.
Deadline is reporting that McPhee will topline the psychological thriller Depravity from a script written by bestselling author Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Shutter Island, Gone Baby Gone) with Paul Tamasy (co-writer of The Fighter) slated to make his directorial debut.
The film centers on “a group of roommates [who] accidentally kill an innocent man they thought was a thrill killer. It sends the group into a world unhinged from any moral compass, one in which they may be forced to confront not only the evil around them but the evil within them as well. McPhee stars as a gorgeous twentysomething the group tries to scapegoat.”

Disney have bought the rights to the film adaptation of the best selling book, and tale of human courage, The Finest Hours.
The book tells the true story of a Coast Guard rescue team’s attempt to save 84 men who were left stranded in the freezing waters of the Atlantic when a blizzard saw their two oil tankers torn in half, in a cold winter of 1952.
As a storm raged through the Atlantic the men clung to floating parts of their ship’s wreckage, whilst the wooden, motorized lifeboats battled against the waves.
The adaptation will be penned by Oscar nominees, and The Fighter scribes Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson, according to a Deadline report. The pair are set to work alongside producers Jim Whitaker and fellow The Fighter alumni Dorothy Aufiero.
Whitaker called the book “a riveting story of courage” that was “all the more compelling” because it was true.

Disney has scored the film rights to Michael J. Tougias and Casey Sherman's 2009 novel "The Finest Hours" reports Deadline.
Based on a true story and set in New England in 1952, the story deals with a Coast Guard rescue undertaken after two oil tankers were torn in half by treacherous waves during a deadly nor'easter blizzard. There were four rescue efforts, including two undertaken by a handful of men on two old, wooden, motorized 36-foot lifeboats.
The men understood they had no business fighting frozen gale winds and seas but went anyway in an attempt to rescue the 84 men who were floating on halves of the cracked and sinking oil tankers.
Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson ("The Fighter") are attached to adapt the script. Dorothy Aufiero and Jim Whitaker will produce.
