At 16, fractured her skull in a riding accident, was unconscious three
days and took several months to recover fully.
While in grammar school, she was friends with Ian Curtis (1956-1980), lead
singer of the English post-punk band Joy Division; she was head girl at
the school attended by Curtis's future wife Deborah.
