Berlin -- The jury for this year's newcomer awards at the Munich International Film Festival snubbed all hopefuls -- saying none of the young German filmmakers in the running were up to snuff.
The jury -- which includes Oscar-winner Caroline Link ("Nowhere in Africa"), actor Maximilian Bruckner ("Sophie Scholl") and producer Uli Aselmann ("Winter Journey"), could not find a single candidate this year worthy of the €20,000 ($28,000) producer prize or the €10,000 ($14,000) screenplay award.
The snub prompted Munich festival director Andreas Strohl to defend the festival's selection of German films. Strohl said he was surprised by the jury's decision and said the Munich fest "was convinced of the quality of the films in our selection."...
