We all make moral decisions when we engage with art, consciously or not. For some, an element of a film’s moral makeup crosses a line and makes it reprehensible. This can be in relation to the fiction of the piece or the real world events that took place surrounding the movie. If you, Dear Reader, have such strong moral convictions and/or are sensitive to taboo topics in your movies, then The Crush is not going to be the ‘90s horror flick for you.
Because The Crush is pure sleaze on the screen and even ickier behind the scenes.
The story alone will likely draw a line in the sand for more than a few potential viewers. Journalist Nick Eliot rents a guest house from a well-to-do family and runs into (almost literally) their 14-year-old daughter, Adrian. The Cutler novel series by V.C. Andrews portrays an exceptionally disturbing and scandalous family. The TV adaptation, Dawn, intensifies the drama, focusing on sexual scandals within an aristocratic household. The story follows Dawn, a hapless teenage girl who was kidnapped at birth and raised in challenging circumstances, but with love from her abductors. However, her life takes a tragic turn when she reunites with her biological family, the Cutlers, who treat her like a servant, contrasting the affection she was given in her previous home. The TV series tries to create a dark and mysterious atmosphere to build tension, but at its core, the story mainly revolves around scandalous and eye-rolling twists regarding the mistakes made by Dawn and her family.

V.C. Andrews' Dawn's Joey McIntyre Teases Secrets of the Morning and Playing Naughty Michael Sutton!
It goes without saying that Lifetime lands the best actors for their Vc-Andrews-verse sagas.
And landing a New Kids On The Block member is right up there with their greatest hits.
One of the most exciting aspects of the V.C. Andrews Dawn Miniseries event is that we have the likes of Joey McIntyre channeling '70s Bad Boy Michael Sutton in part two of the Cutler Saga.
Of course, nothing topped chatting with the heartbreaker himself as he discussed the quick turnaround of getting this role, his great working chemistry with lead Brec Bassinger, and so much more.
We were fortunate enough to catch up with McIntyre ahead of the SAG-AFTRA strike to discuss the project. Check out our full interview below!
So how exactly did an NKotB member end up in a V.C. Andrews film?
Not the way you'd expect!

Lifetime isn't Lifetime without V.C. Andrews's book-to-screen adaptations!
And we know you're excited about the four-part Cutler Saga, kicking things off with the first in the series, Dawn.
We can already tell you it's pure campy fun, and the cast is no joke.
We had the opportunity to sit in on a presser with the cast of Dawn, with a special appearance by V.C. Andrews' ghost writer, Andrew Neiderman.
It was all copacetic as everyone discussed how they got into character, gushed over star Brec Bassinger's performance and work ethic, and expressed all the fun they had filming this piece.
Fortunately, TV Fanatic got the opportunity to jump on Zoom with star, Bassinger, to discuss what it was like to play the film's titular role as we follow her through her journey from adolescence through adulthood.

If there's one thing that author Anne Rice loved writing about, it was toxic, messy relationships. Her novels were soapy, supernatural southern gothics that luxuriated in dark sensuality. Her most famous series of novels was The Vampire Chronicles, which primarily followed the vampire Lestat, the Brat Prince of the undead, as he wreaks havoc on every person he meets — vampire, human, or otherwise. Her other major series was "Lives of the Mayfair Witches," which followed a family of witches in New Orleans who were forever entwined with an evil spirit named Lasher. Eventually, the two series crossed over when the witches appeared in the later Vampire Chronicles novels, setting up a whole Anne Rice universe.
Fans of Rice's novels are fervent, and AMC seems to be banking on setting up a television universe based on her world. "Interview with the Vampire," based on the first novel in the Vampire Chronicles,...

Louise Fletcher, the Oscar-winning actress who became iconic for her turn as the villainous Nurse Ratched in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” has died at age 88. Deadline first reported the news of her death, which was shared with the outlet by her family. She died peacefully in her sleep at her farmhouse home in Montdurausse, France, surrounded by those she loved.
Fletcher became one of the great icons of cinematic villainy as Ratched, who menaced the patients at an institution for the mentally ill in the 1975 film. After a career in TV, Fletcher’s performance as the wicked nurse, who battles with Jack Nicholson’s R.P. McMurphy, was just her fourth in a film. “Cuckoo’s Nest,” directed by Milos Forman from the Ken Kesey novel, ended up winning the five “major” Academy Awards: Best Picture, Director, Actor (Nicholson), Actress (Fletcher), and Screenplay. There is gothic business afoot in Lifetime’s Flowers in the Attic: The Origin, a four-part prequel to the V.C. Andrews bestsellers. Forced to live together in a confined space and depending on each other for survival, the Dollanganger siblings from 1987’s Flowers in the Attic have always reminded me of the kids from The Boxcar Children book series I grew up reading, although instead of solving mysteries on fun adventures, they were busy dealing with a scissors-wielding grandma, a murderous mother, and some intense incestual feelings—not exactly the type of material you’d find next to Gertrude Chandler Warner’s books in the library.
Published in 1979 and featuring evil parental figures, inter-family violence, and sibling incest, V.C. Mother's Day is this Sunday, May 14th, which means it’s a perfect time to give thanks to all the mothers who are known as some of the best horror movie villains. Whether they were murderous themselves, like Mrs. Voorhees, or provided the necessary seeds, like Norma Bates, horror just wouldn’t be the same without some seriously off-script (developmentally speaking) mothers.
Before we get to horrific human mothers, though, it’s important to point out that in the animal kingdom, infanticide (killing offspring within their first year of life) and neglect is actually pretty common, and many times it’s an issue of resource allocation. If you were lucky enough to have hamsters growing up (or friends with hamsters, in my case), you may have witnessed this in horror firsthand: the mother hamster not only killing, but likely consuming one or more of her litter. While beyond disturbing, especially...

If you thought Twitter couldn't get any more worked up than it did over If There Be Thorns, you were sorely mistaken.
Sunday saw the conclusion of Lifetime's on-screen adaptations of V.C. Andrews's Flowers in the Attic series, and, suffice it to say, fans freaked out.
Spoilers for those who haven't watched the previous three films: Seeds witnessed the inevitably twisted end to the Foxworth-Dollanganger-Sheffield-Winslow family's complicated saga. Sibling spouses Cathy and Chris Sheffield (Rachael Carpani and Jason Lewis) returned to their childhood home, Foxworth Hall, which had been taken over by Cathy's son Bart Winslow Jr. (James Maslow...

Last weekend’s If There Be Thorns, fans of Lifetime’s V.C. Andrews film adaptations got their first look at Bart Winslow — a sallow, worried boy whose sibling jealousies got a serious boost from his grandma Corrine and her creepy butler who moved in next door to Bart’s mom, Cathy, and her husband, Chris. Who are also brother and sister. Bart’s real dad is Grandma Corrine’s late husband and … well, you can see why the youngest of Cathy’s surviving sons might have a couple screws loose here and there. Which, says former Big Time Rush star James Maslow, who plays him in Sunday night’s Seeds … Continue reading →

“Big Time Rush” fans are about to see a whole new side of James Maslow this Sunday as he takes on the lead role of Bart Foxworth in Lifetime’s “Seeds of Yesterday.” According to Maslow, the final installment of V.C. Andrews’ “Flowers in the Attic” saga is going to be a doozy. “There’s a lot of incest that goes on,” Maslow told TheWrap in a new episode of “Drinking With the Stars.” “But if you read the novels… it’s for a reason, given the terrible circumstances that these characters were put in when they were younger, they were trapped and locked in.

The "Flowers In the Attic" saga rages on, as the sordid tales of the Dollanganger family get even more twisted in Lifetime's adaptation of "Seeds of Yesterday." Picking up many years after the explosive events of "If There Be Thorns," which aired last night, the latest installment finds Cathy and Chris reuniting with their three children for one of the most dangerous -- and yes, still incestuous -- get togethers ever. Anthony Konechny picks up the role of Jory Sheffield, Cathy's son with deceased dancer ex Julian, in the third sequel ... a role that required the former fitness competitor to get comfortable in a wheelchair and drop some of his muscle. "In the book, Jory does become paralyzed," Konechny tells toofab's Brian Particelli, without revealing too much about how the tragedy happens. "I was able to get a wheelchair a couple weeks before we started filming, take that out and...

Lifetime aired the third and penultimate installment of V.C. Andrews's Flowers in the Attic saga on Sunday night, and the Internet naturally freaked out.
Thorns flashes forward on Flowers' incestuous (but deeply in love!) siblings Cathy and Christopher Dollanganger Sheffield (Rachael Carpani and Jason Lewis) to find them grown-up, married and stalked by their mother Corrine (Heather Graham), who vengefully begins to turn Cathy's youngest child Bart (Mason Cook) – who was conceived through an affair with Corrine's late husband Bart Winslow (Dylan Bruce) – against his parents. Only, Corrine doesn't realize her butler John Amos (Mackenzie Gray) has his own...

Jason Lewis is so dreamy, even his sister wants to have sex with him. Well, at least that's the case in his two new Lifetime films, "If There Be Thorns" and "Seeds Of Yesterday," the third and fourth adaptations of V.C. Andrews' irresistibly twisted novels. While the actor is no stranger to sex scenes -- as seen by his work as Samantha Jones' hunky boyfriend Smith Jerrod on "Sex and the City" -- things were a little different this time around. In the films, Jason's character Christopher is in an incestuous relationship with sister Cathy, after the two connected while being locked in an attic by their mother as children. Check out the video above to see what he told toofab's Candice Brock about filming some of their racier ... and controversial ... scenes for the "Flowers In the Attic" sequel. Seeds of Yesterday, the fourth movie in Lifetime’s V.C. Andrews Dollanganger series, premieres Sunday, April 12 at 10/9Ct on Lifetime. What It’s Based On: The follow-up to Thorns hit bookstores in 1984 and marked a 15-year leap forward in the Sheffield family story. Lifetime of a Lesson: Sometimes your brother is a really lousy keeper. Seeds‘ most notable swerve from the novel is its omission of Corrine’s devious sibling Joel; instead, the now grown Bart (Big Time Rush’s James Maslow) remains deeply influenced by his zealot great-grandfather Malcolm Foxworth and turns his home into a re-creation of Foxworth Hall. Bart invites Cathy, Chris and … Continue reading →

If you were among the nearly 10 million total viewers who tuned in last year for Lifetime’s film adaptations of the V.C. Andrews cult classic novels Flowers in the Attic and Petals on the Wind, prepare yourself for an April shower of Dollanganger goodness. Or Dollanganger badness — which is really what makes the films such escapist fun. The network will debut the next two installments, If There Be Thorns and Seeds of Yesterday, on back-to-back Sundays this month. Still high on the success of its “Flowers in the Attic” franchise, Lifetime has given a greenlight to V.C. Andrews’ standalone novel, “My Sweet Audrina,” a network representative told TheWrap. The book follows a family that’s as twisted and mysterious as the Foxworths, with seven-year-old Audrina at the center. As she comes of age, she’s often compared to her late older sister, who was also named Audrina and who perished years earlier, not knowing everyone is keeping a dangerous secret from her. The adaptation is now casting, while no airdate has been set yet. Also Read: Lifetime’s...

What’s the Matter with Havana?: Cronenberg’s L.A. Story a Hot Mess of Tangled Ideas
Couched within its episodic instances of harpooning Hollywood stereotypes, there is a rather interesting tale in Maps to the Stars contending as a wobbly family saga of vacuous types tainted by their desperate attempts to maintain a certain visibility within celebrity culture. But it’s an idea lost in its own maddening attempt at actually engaging in the mythos pointedly laid out in its own subtext as pertains to provocative motifs like incest, nepotism, and (literally) ghosts from the past. The result is a maudlin brew of wacky circumstances and over-the-top flourishes that sometimes work, but, more often than not, fall flat the longer running the time wears on. While it very much feels like a Cronenbergian endeavor, its pointed critique of a particular empty headed culture ends up feeling like a series of wink-wink potshots,...

I Never Served Time For My Father: Dobkins’ Middling Melodrama
Groaning beneath the weight of its desperate grandstanding for awards consideration, David Dobkins’ The Judge launches a continuous covey of clichés at you as it vacillates between middlebrow familial melodrama, murder mystery, and half-baked courtroom drama. Dobkins is indeed a curious name at the forefront of such material, having rested comfortably in mind numbing studio comedies for the last decade (to be fair, his Wedding Crashers seems to have a sizeable fan base, though the same can’t be said for his last feature, The Change Up, 2011). Not surprisingly, he’s not very adept at crafting this type of material effectively. At a horrendously bloated running time of nearly two hours and twenty minutes, the film could have felt more potentially rewarding sans less cutesy subplots, with a tighter focus on the volatile father/son relationship upon which the crux...

Seeds of Yesterday: Horovitz’s Debut a Tonally Uncomfortable Adaptation
Playwright and screenwriter Israel Horovitz makes his directorial debut with My Old Lady, an adaptation of his own play which originally opened back in 2002. At times a richly observed portrait of coming to terms with the traumatic events of the past when we’re finally forced to, more often than not, the film’s awkward tonal shifts lends the film a generally unpleasant ambience. There’s no smooth segue from its belabored setup from hokey comedy to unctuous soap opera of seedy family secrets. Fans of its three main star attractions will find Kline, Smith, and Scott-Thomas in overall fine form, though the artificial quality of the material often makes their interactions feel forced.

Lifetime is officially moving forward with a third film in the "Flowers in the Attic" series, based on the novels by V.C. Andrews.
Jason Lewis and Rachael Carpani take over the roles of Christopher and Cathy Dollanganger respectively in "If There Be Thorns". The pair now live together as man and wife in California with Cathy's two sons (one played by Mason Cook), who are unaware of the nature of their parents’ relationship.
It's unclear which, if any, other cast members from either previous movie will return for the film which will air in 2015. An adaptation of the fourth book, "Seeds of Yesterday," is still planned and that would air late in 2015.
Andy Cochran will pen the script which will be directed by Independent Spirit Award nominee Nancy Savoca ("If These Walls Could Talk").

Lifetime’s Petals on the Wind delivered an impressive overall audience for a holiday weekend, yet didn’t come close to January’s blowout ratings for its predecessor, Flowers in the Attic.
The V.C. Andrews adaptation blew in 3.4 million viewers Monday night, including 1.5 million adults 18-49. That’s down 44 percent from the record-setting premiere for Flowers (and that’s despite Petals having, if anything, even more incest than the first movie). Lifetime will repeat the sequel tonight in case you missed out. Competition last night included a trio of big broadcast reality shows.

The short answer, alas, is “no.” And really, how could it be? V.C. Andrews’ Petals on the Wind is in a class of its own, one where movie adaptations dare not go — a world in which it’s perfectly fine and great for a 40-something widower to fall in love with a gorgeous, 15-year-old shut-in who’s just been raped by her equally beautiful brother. (Don’t worry about the lack of consent, though; according to Andrews, the girl kind of wanted it anyway. Also totally normal and okay.)
