Still from Fabienne
I had never seen a film from Kazakhstan before and this was my chance to right that wrong. Kausar, directed by Gulsina Mirgaliyeva was the first film of the day for me. A 15 year old who hasn’t even matured yet ends up pregnant following a rape. At the maternity home, she comes in contact with other pregnant women which gives her the inspiration to go ahead with her motherhood. It was a visually striking film with sufficient humour and pathos to elicit claps after it ended.
No film fest experience is complete without a taste or Iranian cinema. So I went in for Amir Hossein Saghafi’s Death is my Profession and was bowled over. Three thieves steal electric cables. One gets electrocuted on the spot. One gets arrested and the third flees. The rest of the film is about the retribution the two survivors receive.
