No one likes a sore loser, but perhaps sore winners are even worse. As seen in B&b, the big-screen debut from TV writer and director Joe Ahearne, a couple cannot simply accept their victory and move on with their lives. Quite the opposite: here Tom Bateman and Sean Teale’s characters return to the scene of the crime. The crime, of course, being one based on prejudice. However as much as B&b feels of its time, on account of the ripped-from-headlines setup, this twisting thriller from 2017 cooks up a timeless degree of suspense.
Ahearne, who was more inspired by the general social and political landscape than any single event, taps into a hot issue that still comes up today. The denial of service to those from the LGBTQ+ community continues to happen even in areas with anti-discrimination laws in place. So although Marc (Bateman) and Fred (Teale) have won...

60 years ago, Doctor Who was created with a strong educational element, mixing science and history facts with adventure. Initially some stories featured no science-fiction elements outside of the Tardis and its crew. This story format petered out by the fourth season, and ′The Highlanders′ was the last example until ′Black Orchid′ in 1982.
The final story of the second season created the ′Pseudo-historical′ format – a story set in Earth′s history but with an additional science-fiction element to the Tardis crew. This format persists to the present day. By ′Best Historical Episodes′ here, we don’t mean the dozen or so purely historical stories, but are including pseudo-historical stories too.
Some of these stories have a historical setting based around a historical celebrity. Others are more intertwined with historical events and use that setting as a springboard for their stories, but they all represent the best the show has delivered so far.

Sony-backed Eleventh Hour Films is making the series and Sony Pictures Television is taking it out internationally. Being a sore winner might get a person killed in B&B, which centers on two gay men who risk violence by spending the night at an inn where they're definitely not wanted. The big-screen feature debut for Brit TV helmer Joe Ahearne, the pic works well within its modest means, wringing life-or-death drama out of, basically, a debate over the accuracy of one man's gaydar. Gay audiences will be the most receptive in its niche release, though the film is not the steamy, straight-alienating suspenser some may expect from marketing materials.

The world of Doctor Who has changed greatly in the space of just 10 years. The cast and crew have almost completely been replaced since 2005, including a number of new actors to play the errant Time Lord and his companions.
But what has happened to the class of '05? Where are Rose and Mickey now? What is the writer of 'Dalek' up to? And where can you see more work from the director of 'Rose'?
Here it is then, your guide to the main players of Doctor Who series one.
The Cast
After his three-month on-screen stint as the Doctor, Christopher Eccleston's career continued in much the same vein, taking in theatre, interesting television roles and the odd blockbuster.
Post-2005, the Northern actor went Stateside to take on the role of invisible man Claude in the Us series Heroes. From there, he popped up in a very amusing Doctor Who-esque cameo as Dr.

Well, this was only a matter of time. Word emerged over a year ago that Disney was planning a live-action version of their beloved "Beauty And The Beast," and they had tapped "Trance" writer Joe Ahearne to pen the script for what was then simply going to be called "The Beast." A little bit has changed since the, but the project is still firmly a go, and now has a director in place. "Dreamgirls" and "The Fifth Estate" helmer Bill Condon will get behind the camera for this one, with spinoff veteran Evan Spiliotopoulos ("Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure," "The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning," "Tarzan 2") writing the script. Of course, plot details aren't being revealed. But given the massive success of "Maleficent" over the weekend, the sorta live-action prequel to "Sleeping Beauty" and the arrival of the flesh and blood version of "Cinderella" next year, this is clearly...

Disney has had a new, live-action take on Beauty And The Beast in the works for a while now, with This Life/Doctor Who directing veteran Joe Ahearne at one point attached to take the reins. Now that Maleficent has scored a solid hit at the box office, the Mouse House is understandably pushing this one into high gear, and has Bill Condon on board to call the shots instead.Exactly how – or indeed whether – the new tale will re-invent the story of the cursed prince and the young woman who wins his hairy heart to (spoiler alert) break the evil spell remains to be seen, but we do know that Evan Spiliotopoulos is currently at work on the script.Condon, of course, knows a thing or two about supernatural romance and hairy creatures, since he was responsible for the final two Twilight films, adapting Breaking Dawn. But Disney’s...

There's a special kind of magic involved in the creation of a really great pop movie, something that manages to capture both the electrifying thrill the music and the tangible air of the period. Like Steve Rash's The Buddy Holly Story, which still stands up to repeat viewing after 35 long years, Good Vibrations (2012, Universal, 15) is a nostalgic gem blending just the right amount of fact and fantasy as it tells the story of Belfast's "godfather of punk", Terri Hooley. Brilliantly played by Richard Dormer, Hooley is the budding DJ and owner of a proudly non-sectarian record shop whose life is transformed by seeing Rudi perform an ebulliently boisterous live gig and hearing the Undertones play Teenage Kicks. Director Danny Boyle gets credit for never repeating himself. In a short retrospective contained on the newly released Trance Blu-ray, he talks about the appeal of each film and how making them has continually surprised him. He had read the Joe Ahearne script for Trance years earlier and it stayed with him and he finally shot it. Then let it marinate in Post Production while he mounted the incredible opening for the most recent Olympics.
Ahearne wrote the script back in the 1990s and first showed it to Boyle after he shot Shallow Grave and the concept lingered. It is also partially based on the eponymous British television series. Boyle’s frequently collaborating John Hodge stepped in to rework parts of the script and then it was finally made last year.

Da Vinci's Demons delivers one of its most successful episodes so far. Here's Ron's review of The Tower...
This review contains spoilers.
1.5 The Tower
The more of Da Vinci's Demons I see, the more I like the performance of lead actor Tom Riley as the mad genius. As Leonardo gets put under more and more pressure by the machinations of Rome, the deadlines of the Medicis, the needs of Florence, his chaotic personal life, and the weight of his own genius - not to mention his fate as the savior of humanity - his quirks become more pronounced. He has facial tics, he fidgets, he twitches, he sweats and roils uncomfortably in his own skin. It's broad and showy, but this is a series that rewards broad and showy, and it really accentuates the character's instability, in addition to his genius. It's not subtle,...

Da Vinci’s Demons, Season 1: Episode 5 – “The Tower”

So, to continue the trend of piecing together seemingly unrelated things in these Da Vinci’s Demons reviews (I consider this completely appropriate because of the outrageous fashion in which da Vinci solves his problems in this show), let me turn your attention to Bruce Dickinson’s song, “The Tower,” with which this episode shares its name. Is it a coincidence that the album from which that song comes from, The Chemical Wedding, is concerned with mysticism to a similar degree that Da Vinci’s Demons is? Definitely. But all coincidences aside, it’s hard to ignore lyrics like “The moon and sun divided / The hanged man smiles” after seeing some of the closing images of the episode “The Tower” – the hanged man tarot card, the vision...

Disney has announced that Downton Abbey actress Lily James has been cast as Cinderella in Disney's upcoming live-action re-imagining of the classic fairytale. The film is being directed by Kenneth Branagh and James will join Cate Blanchett who was previously cast in the role of the evil manipulative stepmother.
Emma Watson was considered for the role at one point, but she ended up not taking it. I think James seems like the perfect young actress for the role. The script for the film was written by Chris Weitz and Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada).
There's some solid talent attached to this project, and it will be interesting to see how it turns out. The studio is also developing a live action version of Beauty and the Beast, which is being written by Trance scribe Joe Ahearne.
Do you think James is a good choice to play Cinderella? ...

Whilst the average cinema-goer is no doubt aware of his name, the typical movie buff is most likely familiar with some of Danny Boyle‘s work. His most successful film is Slumdog Millionaire, but he’s also done various other films in the past, including Trainspotting, Sunshine and 127 Hours. He’s not the most prolific of directors, but when he makes a film it is certainly worthy of attention.
This brings us to the recent Trance trailer. Trance, of course, is the latest film by Danny Boyle. Straight away, there are various themes and similarities that make this instantly recognizable as a ‘Boyle movie’. It can easily be argued that all of Boyle’s films have had a strong human and emotional theme. Whilst the likes of Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting are prime examples, even Sunshine focuses on the human and emotional aspects of a more unusual situation; the same goes for 127 Hours.

Trance
Directed by Danny Boyle
Written by Joe Ahearne and John Hodge
United Kingdom, 2013
Danny Boyle has yet to make a dull movie, but that appears to be the only consistency he’s concerned with. His new film Trance is as amped up, jittery, and stylistically charged as Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, and the rest of his filmography, but the story holds up to barely the most minor scrutiny. Trance‘s inconsistencies go well beyond its script, all the way down to the various flourishes Boyle employs throughout the film, tossing them out as he deems them useless. With James McAvoy as the lead, and a plot that, in its sometimes sublime nuttiness, isn’t easy to pin down as it unfolds, Trance is passable, but too silly.
McAvoy is Simon Newton, a bored art gallery employee with too much time on his hands and too many gambling debts he needs...

Chicago – Danny Boyle’s “Trance” is an undeniably well-made thriller that works back in on itself a few too many times for disbelief to stay suspended but delivers enough escapist entertainment to be considered a success. It’s totally ridiculous and yet never boring, propelled by the quick-cut style of the man who brought similar momentum to “Shallow Grave,” “Trainspotting,” and “28 Days Later.” At this point in his career, nearly everything Boyle does is interesting. The fact that “Trance” doesn’t rise above that faint praise is only due to the silliness of the script by Joe Ahearne & John Hodge. When one reconsiders the plot after the end, it’s nearly miraculous that Boyle and his talented cast pull it off as expertly as they do.

Danny Boyle’s return to the thriller genre is also a return to the three character piece nature of his debut feature Shallow Grave, albeit placed within the confines of a heist film set mostly within the human mind. This is bound to draw comparisons with Christopher Nolan’s Inception, though Boyle’s film is actually based on an earlier TV feature from 2001, but Trance is a smaller beast scale-wise; a psychological thriller imbued with noir characteristics.
The psyche explored in Boyle’s film is that of London-based art auctioneer Simon (James McAvoy) who helps mobster Frank (Vincent Cassel) orchestrate the theft of a hugely valuable painting, only to provoke one slip-up during the heist’s execution that causes aspects of his memory to be erased, specifically the location of the painting which he himself has slipped...

Trance is a remake of a little-seen British TV movie from 2001 written and directed by Joe Ahearne. Danny Boyle’s remake makes me want to see the original, because while the new film starts out great, and seems to have the makings of a first-rate thriller, it doesn’t end up that way. James McAvoy works at a high-end London auction house, and gets involved with a sinister art thief played by Vincent Cassel and a sexy hypnotherapist, played by Rosario Dawson. A daring theft sets the serpentine story in motion, but Trance doesn’t know when to quit. After a great opening sequence that hooks you right away, it asks you to buy into a chain of increasingly improbable events. Then, at...

Goya’s Ghosts: Boyle’s Twisty Tale Fails to Hypnotize
Danny Boyle re-teams with scribe John Hodge (co-writing with Joe Ahearne) for Trance, their first collaboration since 2000’s The Beach. A pulpy return in novelistic filmmaking for Boyle, this labyrinthine narrative has a few too many ridiculous turns of the screw to feel like the intelligent mindf*ckery it really wants to be. Its lofty aspirations give it a unique flavor, like Inception meets Mamet’s Heist, but there’s an aggravating aura of smugness to this mystery thriller that reduces the sum of its parts to a mere marriage of convenience.
Simon (James McAvoy) is a fine art auctioneer that’s the victim of a vicious head injury during an audacious heist of a prized painting by Francisco Goya, the eerie Witches in the Air. After Simon is released from the hospital, ruthless gang leader Franck (Vincent Cassel), demands...

Title: Trance Fox Searchlight Pictures Director: Danny Boyle Screenwriter: Joe Ahearne, John Hodge Cast: James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel, Rosario Dawson Screened at: Dolby88, NYC, 3/25/13 Opens: April 5, 2013 No film in recent memory exceeds the implied product placement of the science of hypnotherapy as does Danny Boyle’s visually stunning and boldly hallucinatory “Trance.” The picture is about memory—loss of—and the attempt by a band of motivated people to restore the ability of an amnesiac to remember a crucial bit of information. Danny Boyle returns to full-tilt cerebral mode for the first time since 2002′s superb 28 Days Later in this heady psychological-thriller-cum-heist-flick that will test the audience’s attention span as well as their tolerance for being led down the wrong garden path. Though there’s plenty to like on a superficial level, Trance is a major step down from Boyle’s recent major works, while at the same time lacking the quiet, unassuming charm of his minor league hit Millions; sadly, this is more in the murky territory of The Beach.
Simon (James McAvoy) is a young fine art auctioneer who gets embroiled in a scheme to steal a highly valuable painting from his place of employment. After the particulars of the heist don’t quite go as planned, a head injury causes Simon to forget where he has stashed the piece. The leader of the gang,...

Often it's a thin line between genius and madness, and director Danny Boyle just tips the balance the wrong way with this psychological heist thriller. James McAvoy is, ostensibly, the star of the show as a London art dealer who is forced to assist in the theft of a Goya painting and then forgets where he stashed it, but part of the problem is that Boyle's attention flits too much between characters.
Throughout, and with typically in-your-face style, Boyle also blurs the line between what is real and what is happening inside Simon's (McAvoy) addled mind after he gets pistol-whipped to the head. But the director underlines the artifice of his own medium as well, having Simon address the camera directly to retrace his steps on the day of the heist,...

There are things that feel seismically important at their moment in time, then fade in the memory as the years go by, their artifice and unremarkable nature suddenly apparent when plucked from their initial context.
The opening ceremony for the Olympics is not one of these things. It was spectacular then when I watched it in a garden in Hackney with all of my friends, initially sceptical, then awed by the spectacle, tickled by Bond and the Queen, weirdly moved by Mr Bean then completely won over by the NHS celebration, before heading onto the roof to watch the entire horizon explode into fireworks and generally radiate with the feeling that we (with we pertaining to us as individuals, our friendship groups and respective relationships, and the whole...

We’ve got just over a week to wait for Danny Boyle’s Trance, and all that we’ve seen so far has our interest piqued for the psychological crime-thriller.
James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel, and Rosario Dawson take the lead here, making up an impressive leading trio. And after catching the first TV spot, MSN have debuted a new featurette, taking us behind the scenes of Boyle’s return behind the camera.
A fine art auctioneer mixed up with a gang joins forces with a hypnotherapist to recover a lost painting. As boundaries between desire, reality and hypnotic suggestion begin to blur the stakes rise faster than anyone could have anticipated.
Starring alongside McAvoy, Cassel, and Dawson will be Tuppence Middleton, Danny Sapani, Lee Nicholas Harris, and Wahab Sheikh.
Boyle is directing from a script co-written by Joe Ahearne (Apparitions) and John Hodge (Trainspotting), partly inspired by Ahearne’s 2001 TV movie of the same name.

Disney has spent the last few years re-imagining or remaking the best fairy tales. After all, if people love the story, why won’t they want to see it again? From Alice and Wonderland to the recent Oz The Great And Powerful, these films have proven that they can be quite successful (at least in terms of box office figures), so it looks like this trend is here to stay. The next classic that Disney is looking to re-imagine is Beauty And The Beast, or as the new film may be called, The Beast.
Trance writer Joe Ahearne is currently in talks with Disney to reinvent the franchise and the plan is to make the new film live-action and likely 3D.
Keep in mind, with a name like The Beast and a writer like Ahearne, the film may end up looking a little different from the sweet, heart-warming picture above.

It’s a tale as old as time: A revisionist fairy tale blows up at the box office (this time, it’s Oz the Great and Powerful, which made over $80 million this past weekend), and suddenly all the studios want in on creating the next big live-action “fairy tale.” (In this case, “fairy tale” means any popular children’s story).
Disney is looking to develop Beauty and the Beast into a live-action film, possibly to be written by Joe Ahearne (Trance), according to a Deadline report. The studio’s 1991 animated movie is a beloved classic, and was the first animated...
