The 69th Edinburgh International Film Festival (17-28 June) gets underway this week with the World Première of actor Robert Carlyle's directorial debut, The Legend of Barney Thomson and there's much more to get excited about over the coming ten days of festival offerings. Brand new artistic director Mark Adams revealed this year's line-up at the end of may including the UK premiere of Inside Out, the brand new Disney Pixar film that intends to take audiences inside the mind of a young girl to meet her various animated emotions. Amy, a documentary about the late singer Amy Winehouse from Senna director Asif Kapadia also appears in the programme having played to strong reviews at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

The Edinburgh International Film Festival gets underway today with a local hero leading the way. Robert Carlyle’s first directorial gig, The Legend Of Barney Thomson, is the opening gala this year. The film has a new poster timed perfectly for the occasion. Click on the thumbnail for a closer look. Adapting a comic crime novel series, Carlyle stars as Barney, a hopeless barber overcome by some dark urges that lead him into a murderous spree. Cue Ray Winstone’s Glasgow detective and his high-testorone colleagues blundering about in a pursuit that may or may not end in a literal Ray Winstone floating head. Have a bang on that.In case you were wondering, Emma Thompson's Oscar campaigning hasn’t aged her terribly. She’s been made up by X-Men and Harry Potter alumnus Mark Coulier to put the years on as Barney’s domineering mum and “good-time girl", Cemolina.

The recruitment process for a new chair has now begun.
Last’s resignation comes just three months after Mark Adams began his role as Eiff artistic director, replacing Chris Fujiwara who stood down in September.
Last, a producer who has worked on films including Terence Davies’ Sunset Song and Sylvain Chomet’s The Illusionist, had been in the post since November 2012.
He said: “It’s been an honour and a pleasure to chair the Cmi. We have made huge strides in developing the business, including raising the profile and standing of Eiff. I wish Ken Hay...

Photo: Courtesy of Eiff The Edinburgh International Film Festival will open its 69th edition on June 17 with the world premiere of The Legend Of Barney Thomson. This year also marks the first under the stewardship of incoming artistic director Mark Adams. We caught up with him to ask a few questions about his plans for this year and beyond.
Aw: At the programme launch, you mentioned how many of the films that have been programmed (around a quarter in the feature programme, and 80 per cent of the shorts) came through the submissions process this year. How important do you think that route to audiences is for the health of the festival and global filmmaking more generally?

"And yet it is." Not everyone agrees. The Telegraph's Robbie Collin will grant that it's "intense, stylish, topical, well-acted. But the one thing it could never be called is satisfying." Screen's Mark Adams notes that the "shadow of Philip Seymour Hoffman hangs over the film," while a "welcome addition to the cast is Julianne Moore." We've got more reviews and the trailer. » - David Hudson...
