After donning ape fur for his upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Kevin Durand is now getting Naked.
The actor, who is also currently on screens with horror movie Abigail, has joined Liam Neeson in Paramount Pictures’ untitled remake of Naked Gun, based on the crime spoof comedies that were released in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Pamela Anderson and Paul Walter Hauser are also on the call sheet for the feature that will begin shooting later this month.
Akiva Schaffer is directing the comedy, which has a script by Dan Gregor, Doug Mand and Schaffer. The trio were behind the popular and Emmy-winning Disney+ movie Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.

Exclusive: After having a busy month at the box-office with Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire and Abigail both opening, Dan Stevens is continuing to stay busy as he is set to join Lily James in the upcoming film inspired by the story of Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, from 20th Century Studios and Ethea Entertainment.
While it’s not entirely clear who Stevens will be playing, we’re told he’s set for the part of Herd’s business partner. The untitled feature goes into production this year.
Famously launching the online dating platform Bumble after co-founding and departing Tinder, Herd became one of the youngest self-made billionaires at age 31, when Bumble went public in 2021. While she stepped down as CEO last year, the app continues to be hugely popular amongst the single crowd.
Plot details for the film remain vague, as it’s said to be somewhat loosely inspired by Herd’s story.

There is a family that has been in the police force for three generations. The grandfather is a former commissioner, the father is the current one, the eldest son is already a detective, the only daughter in the family is the only exception and works as a lawyer. And the youngest son has just joined the police force after graduating from the academy.

From the team behind Flickering Myth comes the gothic horror film The Baby In The Basket. First look and more details below.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: 2024 has been a proper rollercoaster ride for horror fans. After a slow start, we’ve since been treated to the excellent Immaculate and The First Omen and the riotously fun Abigail and we’re not too far off from the release of Renny Harlin’s The Strangers: Chapter 1.
We’ve now got word of another horror film heading our way, hopefully sooner rather than later. The Baby In The Basket is directed by Nathan Shepka and Andy Crane from a script by Tom Jolliffe.
The Baby In The Basket is “set in 1942 where, as World War II rages on as the nuns of isolated Scottish monastery St. Augustine’s prepare for an incoming storm front. During the night,...

After nearly 90 years, Universal has decided to reintroduce one of their oldest monsters, Dracula’s daughter, with their latest horror film, Abigail. The original 1936 film, Dracula’s Daughter, was a direct sequel to the 1931 Dracula and second in the series with the third being 1943’s Son of Dracula.
Abigail takes the basic idea of the spawn of the rapine of darkness but changes it in many ways. First, the character’s name is now Abigail, while the original was Countess Marya Zaleska. Second, Abigail is portrayed as a little girl, while in the original, she appears to be a grown woman. Third, the film is far more violent and gory, while the original was more about suspense and atmosphere.
But how does this interpretation hold up? Is it a worthy reimagining of the classic tale? Let’s sink our teeth in and find out.

Blue Bloods Season 14 Episode 8 spoilers promise danger for Danny and Baez, thanks to an old enemy.
This will likely bring on the suspense, but will it also finally push their relationship over the line from friendship to something else?
Baez and Danny's relationship has divided the fandom. People either ship them or hate the idea of anything but a close friendship and work partnership.
Still, with Blue Bloods getting close to its midseason finale (the rest of the final season will air in the fall), the evolution of this relationship would get fans talking!

According to spoilers, serial killer Sam Evans gets out of prison early. Evans targeted Baez and her daughter on Blue Bloods Season 13 Episode 20, seeking revenge because Baez had put him away 20 years earlier.
It seems unrealistic that he'd be released from prison only a year later. His case should first be going...

I am Valerie Complex, an associate editor and film writer at Deadline. You may be wondering why this is publishing on a Tuesday, instead of Friday? Well, the good news is this is the first of a special two-part episode series taking place this month. Don’t worry, though! The show will be back for its third season officially on Fridays soon!
Today, I’m chatting with actress, singer and dancer Melissa Barrera, a dynamic, multifaceted talent who has captured the attention of audiences through her versatile and charismatic performances. Barrera can currently be seen starring in the Universal Studios horror film Abigail.

Now in its second week of release, the Radio Silence-directed Abigail is the third Universal Monsters vampire movie released in the last year, coming along in the wake of period piece The Last Voyage of the Demeter and horror-comedy Renfield. All three films have struggled at the box office, but Abigail at least has some good news to celebrate this week.
Renfield came along first in April 2023, ending its run with $26.4 million, while Last Voyage of the Demeter ended its own run with a mere $21.7 million. The vampire ballerina movie Abigail has already outgrossed both films, hitting $28.5 million at the worldwide box office this week.
The bad news is that Abigail‘s reported production budget was $28 million, so it seems unlikely to make a profit at the box office when you factor in the marketing spend and everything else on top of that figure. And that’s especially a bummer...

The past two weekends at the box office have been, in a word, miserable. Yes, "Challengers" won this most recent frame with a $15 million opening, but the total take for the weekend domestically was just over $60 million. Last weekend, when "Abigail" and Guy Ritchie's "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" underperformed, the weekend total was barely above $65 million. When total ticket sales for a weekend are less than what would be a so-so opening weekend for a summer blockbuster, things are dire. Fortunately, there are a couple of bright spots among the darkness.
On its fifth weekend in theaters, "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" pulled in $7.2 million domestically, dropping just 25% from weekend four. It held the number three spot on the charts behind this weekend's newcomers, "Challengers" and "Unsung Hero" ($7.75 million). That was also enough to bring it past the $500 million mark globally. Director Adam Wingard's monster flick...

If you never thought Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake can be turned into something evil not once, it surely can — and the brand new horror has once again proven it. Coming as some kind of cinematic nod to Natalie Portman’s 2010 thriller Black Swan, Abigail sticks to the idea that classic ballerinas and supernatural horrors are actually very much compatible.
Though Abigail, starring Alisha Weir as a ballet dancer having yet to demonstrate to her kidnappers that she’s not a normal little girl, goes further than Darren Aronofsky’s psychological thriller hit, both movies have much more in common than it seems first.
Black Swan and Abigail Are Way More Similar Than You Thought
Natalie Portman’s Nina and Alisha Weir’s Abigail don’t unveil their inner villainy unless they’re triggered by different outside factors: Nina is always confronted by her ballet instructor Mr. Leroy, portrayed by Vincent Cassel,...

After two weeks atop the box-office weekend, Civil War was pushed from the number one spot (and then some) and replaced by Challengers which took first place by a margin of $7.2 million.
In its first weekend of release, the United Artists Releasing product starring Zendaya, Challengers debuted in first place with a total of $15.0 million. This was enough to easily best second-place finisher Unsung Hero which debuted with a total of $7.8 million earned for Lionsgate Films. Meanwhile, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire held its ground at number three where it added $7.2 million over its fifth weekend in release to bring its overall total for Warner Bros. to $181.7 million. All of this pushed last weekend’s top film, Civil War, to fourth place where it took in $7.0 million for A24, giving the film a three-week total of $56.2 million. As expected, Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers scored an easy win this weekend, with a $15 million weekend, just a touch softer than we predicted earlier this week. The tennis-cantered love triangle was no doubt boosted by Zendaya’s star power, with her hotter than ever in the wake of Dune: Part Two’s blockbuster showing this winter. IMAX screens were dominated by Zendaya in one form or another, with both Challengers and Dune 2 playing in the format this weekend thanks to the latter’s re-release.
Notably, the film posted Guadagnino’s best box office opening to date, with the weekend total more than doubling the total take of his previous biggest opener, Bones and All. It’ll be interesting to see if Challengers can hold up in the coming weeks, with The Fall Guy opening next weekend and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes opening the weekend after. With...

Abigail was released on April 19, 2024. The R-rated horror movie opened to positive reviews and is proving itself as a solid entry in the vampire genre. Furthermore, it falls nicely into the realm of horror movies that center on children with powerful and sinister abilities. Abigail follows a team of criminals who kidnap the daughter of a wealthy man. Their objective – to guard her for the next 24 hours into her father pays the ransom. However, things do not go to plan when she reveals herself a vicious and seemingly unbeatable vampire. So, if you liked Abigail, here

As we predicted earlier this week, Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers is set to lead the box office this weekend, with Deadline reporting that it’s on track for a $15 million opening. While that’s a bit below the $17 million we forecasted for the film, that’s still a decent start for a character-driven drama, with the Zendaya-led film an Amazon-MGM production that’s set for an eventual debut on Prime Video. Indeed, the studio has had a lot more luck with launching their fare theatrically than many of their competitors, with Challengers opening similarly to Air and The Beekeeper, both Amazon-mgm movies whose theatrical success paved the way to big streaming numbers.
It certainly helps that Zendaya’s become a big star in the wake of Dune: Part Two’s blockbuster run this winter. However, whether the $50 million film is ultimately judged to be a box office success...

In 2022, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media revived the Scream franchise with a new entry (the fifth) that was a box office hit, earning almost $139 million at the global box office. Fourteen months later, Scream VI came along – and became an even bigger hit, pulling in almost $169 million at the global box office, a number that was up there with the series’ heyday, when the first Scream and Scream 2 made just over $170 million. (Scream 3 also made over $160 million – only Scream 4 failed to crack $100 million.) So, of course, the companies are moving full steam ahead with Scream 7. While the movie seemed, initially, to be on the fast-track to success, the track it’s on has turned out to be a shockingly bumpy ride.

"Who is Matilda Wormwood if not Carrie White without religious trauma?" This is a joke I made when interviewing "Abigail" directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett for the /Film Daily podcast after complimenting them on their decision to cast Netflix's "Matilda the Musical" star Alisha Weir as their titular ballerina vampire. "Matilda" is one of author Roald Dahl's most beloved characters, offering children both the fantastical wish-fulfillment of having telekinetic superpowers, as well as the ever-important message that reading is cool. The 1988 novel has been adapted multiple times across various media, most notably the 1996 feature film directed by Danny DeVito and starring Mara Wilson, the two-part BBC Radio 4 special, the stage musical featuring music by Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly, and the Netflix film adaptation of said musical.

Copyright© 2024 Universal Studios Just a few years ago, Alisha Weir was charming audiences as Matilda in the musical adaptation of the beloved children’s classic. Now, she’s sinking her teeth into a new role as a vampire hunting down her kidnappers in the horror film Abigail. Not only did Alisha expand her acting skills playing a horror character, but she also got to tap into her adventurous side by performing some of her own stunts. During filming, she expressed her excitement about trying new things, including the stunts, which she said she had a great time doing. Whew, it’s not even May, and the cinematic “body count” rises up considerably with another lone, determined warrior facing nearly insurmountable odds. I suppose this is more of the “John Wick” effect, as filmmakers try to “up the ante” and deliver a flick with near wall-to-wall frenetic action. So far this year we’ve gone from the spy showdowns of Argyle to the avenger of the elderly The Beekeeper, and winding up a couple of weeks ago with the manic Monkey Man. For this week’s thriller we’re sent to a near future time in an exotic foreign land as, in a nod either to old Variety newspaper headlines or the beloved ABC Tgif sitcom, Boy Kills World.

Universal has been having a hell of a time getting their Universal Monsters brand back on a better path in the wake of the Dark Universe collapsing, with four movies thus far released in the years since The Mummy attempted to get that interconnected universe off the ground.
First was Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man, to date the only post-Mummy hit for the Universal Monsters, followed by The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Renfield, and now Abigail. The latter three films have attempted to bring Dracula back to the screen in fresh ways, but both Demeter and Renfield severely underperformed at the box office. And while Abigail is a far better vampire movie than those two, it’s unfortunately also struggling to turn a profit.

This weekend marks the last quiet at the box office before summer movie season kicks off with The Fall Guy. As such, it’s expected to be a relatively quiet weekend, with nothing expected to make a debut over the mid-to-high teens. Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers is expected to notch an easy win, thanks to the solid reviews (including our own) and the fact that it features one of the biggest stars of the moment, Zendaya. I’m expecting a debut in the $17 million-ish range, which would be a decent start for distributors Amazon-MGM, who will put the film out on Prime Video before too long.
Originally, Challengers was set for a fall 2023 start, but it was delayed because of the SAG-AFTRA strike. One could understand why, as Zendaya wouldn’t have been available to promote a movie which is earning her rave reviews. While the delay may...

The vampire horror sub-genre has become increasingly popular yet again. Of course, the main representative of the genre of the recent years is the new TV adaptation of Interview with the Vampire, based on Anne Rice's famous gothic horror novel, but today we will talk specifically about the movies.
Last year alone saw the release of two feature-length vampire horror films, Renfield by Chris McKay and The Last Voyage of the Demeter by André Øvredal. What they have in common are one aspect: an absolute failure in terms of critical and audience sympathy.
In this context, the new horror film Abigail is particularly noteworthy. Even though it is currently showing rather modest box office indicators, the new movie has already managed to get rave reviews. That's all thanks to how intelligently the script is constructed, with relevant and genuinely clever references and to the 20th century works that inspired it.

A fiercely capable woman with ice water in her veins finds herself in a creepy-looking mansion, where she has to survive a supernatural threat over the course of one endless night and eventually ends up covered in gore and viscera? If I had a nickel for every time a horror movie directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (aka Radio Silence) came out in the last five years with that exact same premise, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but you know how the rest of the meme goes. If this past weekend's "Abigail" triggered a nagging feeling of déjà vu, well, that's probably because the vampire movie packing a nasty bite (you can read /Film's review by Bj Colangelo here) shares quite a bit of DNA with the directing duo's previous movie, 2019's "Ready or Not."
Apparently, the creative team decided to lean into those similarities even more.

Dan Stevens is having the time of his life as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has become a big hit for Warner Bros and Legendary. His latest release Abigail has also received great reviews from critics and audiences, with many praising his performance. His versatility in switching from a delightfully charming role to an intense individual in the two films is impressive, to say the least.

He has yet another horror film later this year titled Cuckoo, where he stars alongside Hunter Schafer. The horror genre has seen a huge evolution over the years with the Conjuring films, along with Immaculate and The First Omen this year, Stevens is set to continue in the horror genre as he is set to team up with Al Pacino for a new exorcism film.

Taylor Swift started off as a country artist at a time when the genre was both less respectful and accommodating of the voices of women than at any other point in its storied history. The singer’s first four albums barely scan as country music in a meaningful way, instead embracing her preternatural gifts for pop conventions, and her output has gotten stronger the more openly she’s embraced those skills. In the 18 years since the single “Tim McGraw” launched Swift to country stardom, she’s jettisoned the genre’s ill-fitting signifiers and overcome the limitations of her early recordings—improvements captured in her “Taylor’s Version” re-recordings as a powerful statement of artistic agency.
After spending the last year traveling the world on her Eras Tour, Swift has returned with a double album, The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology. To celebrate, we’ve revisited all 11 of her studio albums...

Melissa Barrera’s new horror movie Abigail is out now in theaters, but the favorable critic reviews do not seem to encourage fans at all as the movie struggles to make a profit. The horror genre has been suffering from a decline in people’s interest over the past few years, and this is already becoming an alarming trend.
Abigail (2024)
The lukewarm audience reception to horror films can be attributed to several factors. As it is not yet the season for spooky vibes, viewers are not really looking into scaring themselves. The movie’s weak marketing can also contribute to its downfall.

Al Pacino has played the Devil before (in the 1997 film The Devil’s Advocate), now he’s set to play an enemy of the Devil, as he has signed on to play a troubled priest in the exorcism horror film The Ritual. Pacino will star in the film alongside Dan Stevens of Abigail and Godzilla x Kong, who will also be playing a troubled priest.
Variety reports that XYZ Films has acquired the worldwide rights to The Ritual and are planning to give the movie a theatrical release sometime in 2025. They’ll be setting up international distribution deals at the upcoming Cannes Film Market. David Midell will be directing the film from a screenplay he wrote with Enrico Natale. He previously directed the 2014 drama NightLights and the 2019 thriller The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain.

Both extremely bloody cat-and-mouse chases through massive mansions, Radio Silence’s horror movies Ready or Not and Abigail (now playing in theaters!) are certainly cut from the same cloth, but do they actually take place within a shared universe? It was a question the filmmakers were asked, and their response suggests that the answer to that question is Yes.
Collider’s Perri Nemiroff asked the question of Radio Silence filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who co-directed both 2019’s Ready or Not and this year’s Abigail. As they point out, an Easter egg nestled within Abigail confirms a shared universe connection.
Bettinelli-Olpin tells Collider, “There is a portrait in the background of one of the scenes [in Abigail] of Henry Czerny’s [character from Ready or Not].” Gillet chimes in to clarify, “It would be a grandfather. A great, great, great, great grandfather [of Czerny’s character].”

Setting a vampire — even a tiny one, as in “Abigail” — loose on the world is a messy affair, which got the IndieWire Craft team wondering less about stakes and more about modern special effects make-up. Are there fake blood brands you can buy? Are there different blood recipes for film versus TV? How much has fake blood changed from Nosferatur to Hammer horror to today’s scary movies? Or is fake blood just all VFX these days?

Monsters are everywhere! Godzilla and Kong are going at it once again (this time as a double act) and now Abigail has hit screens, a movie about a heist gone wrong where the loot is an adorable 12-year-old ballerina. Starring Dan Stevens, Melissa Barrera and Kathryn Newton and directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett aka Radio Silence, who made the raucous Ready Or Not (as well as the most recent Scream movies), it’s a gore-soaked genre love letter that at one point had ties to the Universal Monsters canon.

Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 5 was supposedly going to turn it all around for the superhero universe. After a failed attempt with Phase 4, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was a promising candidate when it came to reviving the MCU. Henry Cavill’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare has been receiving mixed to positive reviews from critics, but the box office numbers appear very weak for the movie made on a $60 million budget. But fans are not blaming Cavill for having a bit of bad luck in theaters recently for the impending doom of the movie. While Guy Ritchie’s film needs a miracle to recoup its budget, the film couldn’t have made any more bad choices with its release.

Refresh for latest…: For the fourth weekend in a row, Warner Bros/Legendary Entertainment’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was the top studio movie at the global and international box office. While it’s true there have not been a whole lot of wide releases on a worldwide level since the start of the year, it’s heartening to see continued play for the big titles.
That also includes Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4 which will cross $500M global in the coming weeks, and the worm tail of WB/Legendary’s Dune: Part Two, currently closing in on $700M worldwide. Better start to the first quarter than expected? Yes.
Taking it from the top this session: GxK grossed $21.6M in 77 overseas markets this frame, just a 42% dip in the holdovers. That puts the international cume at $313.6M and global at $485.2M.

If you are a horror fan then you might have heard about the director duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who gave us brilliant horror films like 2022’s Scream and 2019’s Ready or Not and now they are back with their new and even campier horror film Abigail. Written by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick, the new horror film is a reimagining of the 1936 Universal Classic Monsters film Dracula’s Daughter and it follows the story of a group of kidnappers who are told to kidnap the daughter of a very powerful man and keep her in the house for 24 hours, but they quickly realize that the daughter might not be what she seems. Abigail stars Alisha Weir, Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Will Catlett, Kathryn Newton, Kevin Durand, Angus Cloud, Giancarlo Esposito, and Matthew Goode. Things had been going so well at the box office over the past few weeks, so it was disappointing that none of the week’s three new wide releases made much of an impact. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Although Universal’s vampire thriller “Abigail,” directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (aka “Radio Silence”), had the best hopes of breaking out due to its cool horror premise and ensemble cast, Alex Garland‘s future shock thriller “Civil War,” starring Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura, was able to hold onto first place with $11.1 million, a drop of 57% from its record-setting opening for A24. The movie has grossed $44.9 million domestically so far, which already puts it in the top 10 all-time grossers for the studio after just 10 days.

One of the truisms in film calendar slating is that it’s a real plus to be the first new horror film released in a while. With the weak opening of Universal’s “Abigail” this weekend, the inverse also seems to hold.
The seventh wide release in the genre over the past eight weeks from a studio that has been quite reliable for sustaining horror success, from Blumhouse and elsewhere, fell short with only $10.1 million. That allowed “Civil War” (A24) to hold on to # 1 with $11.2 million despite a 56 percent drop.
With such a low gross at #1 and the rest doing less, the weekend struggled to reach close to $66 million. That’s the fifth sub-$70 million total out of 16 weekends so far this year. By comparison, pre-Covid 2019 — with ticket prices more than 15 percent lower than now — had none.

Comscore is estimating an $11.1 million weekend for the controversial film, which posted a modest 56% decline at the box office, which is way better than anyone was expecting. Indeed, the film has a $44 million running total at the North American box office, which is great for a movie like this, especially considering how divisive it’s been.

Alex Garland’s dystopian political action film Civil War about an America torn apart triumphed over new vampire pic Abigail at the weekend box office.
Civil War held in well to stay No. 1 in its second weekend with $11 million for a healthy domestic total of $45 million for indie studio A24. The film has succeeded in uniting both blue states and red states.
Heading into the weekend, Universal’s Abigail was expected to take a bigger bite out of Civil War but instead opened to $10.2 million. That’s still a respectable number for a studio film that cost a modest $28 million to make before marketing.
Horror often struggles overseas, where Abigail only took in $5 million from 62 markets for a global start of $15.2 million,
Abigail is from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the directing duo known as Radio Silence who were behind the reboot of the Scream franchise and the horror hit Ready or Not.
