“In life there are two rules to live by. Number one, never run out of Colt 45. Number two, remember rule number one.” Happy Birthday Billy Dee Williams! It’s bitter sweet writing this birthday message to Billy Dee because of the death of Don Rickles, but respect is obviously going both men’s ways today. At a combined age of 170, you don’t have much more history in Hollywood than Billy Dee Williams and Don Rickles do. Growing up in the UK’s equivalent of The Shire meant that access to the escapism of video rentals was something as distant as The Misty Mountains. The arrival of a man who looked like Stanley Uris from Stephen King’s It, driving a van that was filled to the rafters with VHS, and which glowed like the Pulp Fiction briefcase when opened, introduced me to a roll-call of the 80s Action Heroes. Monosyllabic men, who quipped their way through bullets and bodies. The first plastic case to cross my sweaty palms featured a muscular fellow, holding a gun, against a colourful heatmap backdrop. It was Predator, and that was a long time ago.
About where things began to change for the real expendables is hard to pinpoint. Why did these one-time box-office giants; Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Van-Damme, and to a lesser degree Lundgren, suddenly find their powers diminishing?...

The “Bob’s Burgers Music Album” is coming your way May 12, and it’s loaded up with more goodies than a Poutine on the Ritz Burger.
This is not the time to be modern and go the digital route for your music. Hell, even buying the CDs isn’t old-school enough. Instead, if you buy the the “Bob’s Burgers Music Album” deluxe limited-edition gift box, that comes with three LPs (in “condiment-colored” vinyl?!), a Bob’s Buskers seven-inch white vinyl LP, a hardbound lyric book (for those times you need to know more than just “Butts, Butts, Butts”), a sheet music collection, three original posters and a lot more. What is “more” you ask? Take a look at the unboxing video below featuring Teddy’s hairy arms and mumbly narration to see everything:
Of course, the two-cd album is still chockfull of “Bob’s Burgers” audio goodness, which amounts to 107 songs.

What's more precious than The Lord of the Rings Trilogy? 15 years of it!
On December 19, 2001, The Fellowship of the Ring was released in theatres and ushered in a new era of the fantasy genre. An endeavour eluded by filmmakers for decades, J.R.R. Tolkien’s masterpiece was brought to life by director Peter Jackson and the trilogy has since become a staple in pop culture worldwide.
With a budget of close to $100M and a box office gross of over $800M, it should come as no surprise that Fellowship remains one of the most successful – and awarded – films of all time.

Actors will do almost anything to transform into the characters that they play: Orlando Bloom recently went platinum blond for a role, Lucy Hale maintained the same hair color for years of playing Aria Montgomery, and if you’ve seen Will Smith lately, you’ve most likely noticed the wispy ‘stache that’s been gracing his upper lip sans explanation. He shares your concern that this look might be a permanent one – and he explained the reason behind it on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Anyone who’s been to the Toronto International Film Festival is used to seeing the lowercase Tiff logo adorned on tote bags, posters and t-shirts all across the city. This includes the closing-night party held Saturday night, where attendees were greeted by uniformed cheerleaders with the Tiff logo across their chests, booked via Cotton Candy Events. (According to Cotton Candy, the party’s prom theme was the festival’s idea.)

Just to be clear, the leading characters in this violent action-comedy are anything but nice. That’s the level of humor in The Nice Guys, the latest endeavor from Shane Black, whose Lethal Weapon helped make him the hottest screenwriter in Hollywood thirty years ago. This movie is more on the level of Black’s directorial debut, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, an overblown L.A. action yarn with a smartass sense of humor. What makes this movie tolerable and even enjoyable at times is the rapport between Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, as a pair of low-rent private detectives who get more than they bargained for while tracing the murder of a porn actress named Misty Mountains. It seems that...

Los Angeles is maybe known world-wide as an entertainment mecca, ground zero for all things that glitter, but it’s also the locale for thrillers and the “hard-boiled” mystery. Everybody from Bogie to Bob Mitchum threw on a trench coat, adjusted their fedoras, and strolled down those dark streets and alleys, looking for danger (and dangerous dames). This week’s new flick somewhat echoes those noir “programmers”. Being a big Summer release, we’ve got two “gumshoes” dodging bullets. And it’s not post WWII California, but rather post Vietnam War “la la land” circa 1977 (near Christmas-time). Now, with two bickering private eyes, you might consider this a variation of the standard “cop buddy” actioner. That’s appropriate since this movie is directed by the screenwriter who set the template for police team-up flicks back in 1987 with Lethal Weapon, Shane Black. It turns out that this movie’s heroes are...

Shockingly, this is not a Christmas movie. In every other way, though, it is a Shane Black movie, and that is reason enough to rejoice. I am more than willing to cop to the fact that part of what I like about Shane Black is that he evidently loves the exact same things I love, and for the exact same reasons. When someone’s making art that hews so closely to my ideal aesthetic, I start half-in-the-bag for the thing. I’ve written often about my love of La detective stories, especially when set in different eras of the city’s development. Walter Mosley, Raymond Chandler, Thomas Pynchon, Robert Towne, James Ellroy, Michael Connelly… lots of guys have mined this territory to terrific effect, and I have no doubt I’ll take my own shot at it someday. What Black does here is very different than what Paul Thomas Anderson did in Inherent Vice,...

Stop me if you’ve seen this one: Russell Crowe and Kim Basinger walk onto the set of a period L.A. crime drama and, in between tangled plot twists and turns, a lot of people get shot until in the end the true bad guy is revealed. No one could blame you for guessing L.A. Confidential, but the latest collaboration between the now-veteran actors is actually The Nice Guys, the latest film by the writer turned-director, Shane Black (Iron Man 3, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang).
The similarities between Curtis Hanson’s 1997 neo-noir film and this physical, slapstick comedy do not end at its overlapping cast or city setting. Twenty years have passed since Crowe and Basinger collaborated Hanson’s film, while this new collaboration is itself set twenty years later. It’s now Los Angeles in the 1970s (though by the time screen title announces that the title...

Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling are outstanding in Shane Black’s detective thriller, The Nice Guys. Here’s Ryan’s review...
Screenwriter-turned director Shane Black majors in creating likeable screw-ups. One of his earliest and most famous characters was Lethal Weapon’s Martin Riggs, a suicidal, alcoholic widower and renegade cop. But there was also Joe Hallenbeck, the booze-soaked Secret Service agent-turned private eye in The Last Boy Scout, and Harry Lockhart, the heavy-drinking thief and wannabe actor played by Robert Downey Jr in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
You can probably spot the pattern here. In The Nice Guys, we get two likeable screw-ups for the price of one: Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe), a crumpled “enforcer” whose job basically involves frightening people and breaking their limbs for hard cash, and Holland Marsh (Ryan Gosling), a private investigator so catastrophically bad at his job that his own daughter,...

The Star Wars franchise makes its return this December with Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, brandishing the return of several cast members of the storied Original Trilogy. Apparently, one classic cast member who will be missing that boat is Billy Dee Williams in his role as the Cloud City Casanova himself, Lando Calrissian. However, according to his comments in a recent interview, Lando could still end up jumping into his cloud car and swooping his way into the new films, caressing a beautiful lady in one hand while holding a can of Colt 45 in the other. (Although, drinking malt liquor while cloud-car-flying is not recommended for people who are not Billy Dee.) In an interview with Cinelinx, Williams discusses his recent return as the Lando Calrissian character by way of a voice performance for the animated series, Star Wars Rebels. The movie may be called “The Hobbit” but make no mistake: “The Battle of the Five Armies,” the third and final installment in Peter Jackson’s trilogy, belongs to Thorin Oakenshield, the leader of the dwarves. In the film, Thorin, played by British actor Richard Armitage, has a story arc as wide, winding and treacherous as the Misty Mountains of Middle-earth. Read an interview with Armitage after the jump.

There's something of a minor "L.A. Confidential" reunion going on with the detective thriller "The Nice Guys" as Kim Basinger is set to reunite on screen with Russell Crowe in the Shane Black-directed feature.
Ryan Gosling plays a 1970s L.A. private detective who teams with an enforcer-for-hire (Crowe) to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. They soon discover a massive conspiracy reaching up to the highest levels of the city's power brokers.
Basinger will play the city's corrupt chief justice, and the mother of a girl (Margaret Qualley) who happens to be the spitting image of a porn star named Misty Mountains.
Also joining the cast recently are Keith David and Beau Knapp as villains. Knapp plays an accident prone, gold chain-wearing motormouth hitman, David is his older partner. Matt Bomer also stars in the film which...

Over the past three-and-a-half years, Peter Hollens has used YouTube to display his substantial vocal talents. Now, Hollens' online celebrity is paying off in the form of a record deal. The Eugene, Oregon-based singer has signed with Sony Records Masterworks and will release his debut album on October 28th. Hollens, who is informally known as a one-man a cappella group, makes music videos where he takes popular songs and sings all the parts himself. His most popular video, a cover of the "Misty Mountains" track from The Hobbit, shows off his vocal range, his finely-tuned ear, and his editing skills. Sometimes, he brings in a friend to sing alongside him; in his most recent video, he teamed up with fellow a cappella vocalist Nick Pitera for a medley of several songs from the musical Wicked. Hollens' channel has racked up 750,000 subscribers and 63 million views, and those numbers caused Sony Music to take notice.

Deadly Friend Death by Basketball
by Mike Hassler
Deadly Friend is not a good movie. At all. Wes Craven’s really hit or miss, in case you didn’t already realize this — for every Last House on the Left there’s a Vampire in Brooklyn, and for a Nightmare on Elm Street there’s a Shocker. His 1986 cheese-tastic gem Deadly Friend is quite a fun watch just for it’s terrible nature. The preposterous plot is of a young man implanting a computer chip into the girl next door’s brain which then gives her superpowers and causes her to go homicidal. The best moment? When our cybernetically altered hottie Samantha (Kristy Swanson) chucks a basketball at Anne “Mama” Ramsey’s head, which literally...

We've got a fun portrait series featuring three horror character icons with over-exaggerated facial features. The big eyes, nose and mouth seem to make these characters even more terrifying than they already are. The series includes Freddy, Jason, and Leatherface.
The art was created by Jason Edmiston using acrylic paint on wood panels. They are part of the Tiny Trifecta art show, which is set to open June 14th at the Cotton Candy Machine.

★★★☆☆Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson's fifth and penultimate venture into Middle-earth, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) sees J.R.R. Tolkien's First World War parable delve deeper into the role of community as his unlikely hero Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) finally reaches the fabled Lonely Mountain. This second chapter in Jackson's Hobbit trilogy adheres strictly to the rules of your classic three-act structure. Often referred to as the 'confrontation', the sophomore act sees its protagonist arrive at a higher sense of awareness in order to overcome the adversity they're facing, with Bilbo and the company of dwarves he's travelling with finally traversing the challenges of the Misty Mountains.

Tonight, March 11th, marks the premiere of From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, exclusively airing on Robert Rodriguez’ new El Rey Network. An expansion on the characters and story seen in the 1996 film, the show will center on brothers Seth and Richie Gecko, who find themselves battling off hordes of blood-sucking vampires, alongside the kidnapped Fuller family (above).
If From Dusk Till Dawn, the movie, is any indication of what we can expect from the series, we’re in store for buckets of blood and a whole lot of fun. I think it’s also safe to say that we can expect some pretty creative vampire kills, courtesy of some pretty creative weapons, which were on display throughout the film. From a holy water-spewing Super Soaker to the particularly memorable ‘codpiece revolver,’ From Dusk Till Dawn features some of the most truly creative weapons in horror movie history.

On the eve of this week’s Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in Paris, Melanie Goodfellow examines why the French film industry looks set for a challenging 2014.
Barely two years ago, the French cinema industry was riding high: record audiences, record exports and seven Oscars for The Artist. French film was not only cool, it was also very, very successful.
But as the industry’s main players gather for the Rendez-vous with French Cinema in Paris (Jan 10-20), the mood will be gloomy: 2013 was tough at home and abroad, 2014 threatens to be even tougher.
Some wonder how Europe’s most powerful film industry will emerge from the perfect storm of recession at home, the disruptive force of technology and threats to what was once viewed as the one of the most successful film financing systems in the world.
“The mood across the industry is very tense and nervous at the moment, whatever the sector...

As Peter Jackson's second Hobbit film is released in cinemas, Andrew looks back on the 1968 BBC Radio 4 adaptation...
Somewhere in the sidestreets of Hereford is, or was, a bookshop that is indelibly labyrinthine in my memory, with nooks and crannies (yes) in every direction filled with shelves, platforms, steps and ladders. I have an inkling that it only sells maps now. When I was a child, it sold all the books, and was the first place I ever saw the cassettes of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit (speaking of Inklings). And, as I pointed out to my parents, we did need something to listen to on the journey back to Glasgow. The Hobbit was cheaper, shorter, and – crucially – not in a cardboard box about a foot long. The cassettes came in reflective gold-coloured card that, I seem to recall, confused the hell out of budgies.
