The Joy Ride movies aren’t as much a franchise as they are one luckily decent Paul Walker thriller followed by whatever the hell Joy Ride: Dead Ahead is, but with every intention of keeping the rubber burning, Sharktopus director Declan O’Brien was brought in to create a second sequel so good, the competition would be forced to eat nothing but dust.
O’Brien is more widely known for his work on the latter Wrong Turn movies, films oozing with wild gore, and that signature focus on mutilated body parts certainly makes for some nice bits of roadkill strewn about Slaughter Alley – but does the promise of vile brutality make another horrifying road-trip sound enticing? Not many people were clamoring for Joy Ride 3, yet Twentieth Century Fox took a gamble on this grotesque home release, and while horror fans certainly won’t be hailing the road-raging franchise,...

Director: Louis Morneau. Writers: Michael Tabb, Catherine Cyran, and Louis Morneau. Cast: Nia Peeples, Steven Bauer, Stephen Rea, Ed Quinn, Ana Ularu, Rachel Dipillo, Adam Croasdell and Guy Wilson. Universal Pictures has been making werewolf themed thrillers since the early '40s and you would think that they would have perfected this genre by now. Their latest production, Werewolf: The Best Among Us, is definitely not perfect and possibly even mediocre. From the abysmal film Joy Ride 2, director Louis Morneau is no stranger to the direct-to-video style of filmaking. As well, Universal's newest production arm, Universal 1440 Entertainment, is also very familiar with Dtv releases. However, Werewolf: The Beast Among Us is unable to step away from film cliches and the title here seems like a re-imaged Van Helsing (2004). All the characters and situations seem artificial. The story, as it is, follows a group of werewolf hunters in Eastern Europe. A local town has experienced.

"It's like a Syfy Channel movie with extra gore," is precisely how my friend, colleague, and astute schlock aficionado Peter S. Hall described the latest "direct-to-video" horror flick from Universal. "Does it seem like the movie has any connection to the Benicio del Toro remake of The Wolfman?", was my next question, and for that answer I had to watch the movie. Short answer: no. Louis Morneau's Werewolf: The Beast Among Us has no connection to Joe Johnston's The Wolfman. What we have here is a very broad, very obvious, and very low-budget piece of anachronistic period-piece horror silliness that, while peppered with familiar faces and (as Pete mentioned) enthusiastic moments of gruesome gore, amounts to little more than a goofy trip to Romania for a visit with some werewolf hunters that don't actually hunt werewolves all that frequently. The over-plotted and broadly written screenplay is overstuffed with subplots and extraneous characters,...

The hunt is on for a good werewolf movie. Again.
Universal Pictures built their foundation on the classic, black and white monster movies like 1931's Dracula and 1941's The Wolf Man, and, after successfully rebooting The Mummy and turning it into a franchise, the studio tried again with The Wolfman in 2010 with less successful results. Mired in production issues, including director Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger) stepping in to helm with only three weeks left before shooting began, The Wolfman failed to earn back its $150 million budget. The studio's response? Rebooting the reboot with Werewolf: The Beast Among Us, which has now quietly arrived on DVD and Blu-Ray.
The plot is fairly simple: a 19th Century European village is being terrorized by a werewolf and a doctor's apprentice (Guy Wilson) joins a team of werewolf hunters (Ed Quinn, Steven Bauer, and Adam Croasdell) to bring down the, well,...

Universal will release Werewolf: The Beast Among Us on Blu-ray/DVD tomorrow and I had a chance to talk with the film’s director, Louis Morneau. Continue reading to learn about how this project came together, filming in Romania, and the possibility of a sequel:
Was this a project Universal approached you with or did you come to them?
Louis Morneau: This was something that Michael Tabb wrote and the studio had. They approached me and I was thrilled to do it, being a fan of the classic Universal horror pictures. I pitched a take that made it darker, added dark humor, and some steampunk elements. It basically kept to Michael Tabbs original draft, but I did a couple of quick passes on it and we were right off to Romania.
What was it like to shoot in Romania, where some of these myths had originated? Was this your first time visiting that country?...

Remember that period, months after the release of Universal's remake of The Wolfman, there were rumblings of a direct-to-dvd sequel? While, yes, there was in fact a werewolf project in development, it had no connection to the redo whatsoever.
Instead, Universal birthed an all-new tale of lycanthropy entitled Werewolf: The Beast Among Us and it's making its way to Blu-ray, DVD and digital download on October 9th.
Louis Morneau (Hitcher II: I've Been Waiting) directs this endeavor which stars Stephen Rea, Steven Bauer, Ed Quinn, Nia Peeples, Guy Wilson, Adam Croasdell and Rachel Dipillo.

Back in July it was announced that Universal had hired Louis Morneau to direct the Untitled Werewolf Thriller that was reworked from the planned sequel to 2010's The Wolf Man. As I noted in my write-up, Morneau isn't generally known for making movies that are released in theaters, rather spending most of his career making direct-to-dvd titles like Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead and The Hitcher II : I.ve Been Waiting. Hence why the newest report about the project isn't all that surprising. Universal has sent out a press release about the new movie - which still doesn't have an official title - announcing the start of production, and has revealed that the film won't be making its way to theaters and, instead, will be making its debut on home video. The news also includes a full cast list, which includes names like Stephen Rea (V for Vendetta, The Crying Game...

Universal Pictures has officially started on production for a new untitled Wolfman movie that will go straight to DVD and Blu-ray. The new werewolf thriller is set to be released on on Halloween of next year 2012. Even though it wont be coming to the big screen there's no way it could be any worse than Universal's last Wolfman film, which was a giant werewolf turd. I was so disappointed in that film. This new movie will in no way be connected with the latter, so it's something that might be worth looking forward to, if your into these kinds of horror films like myself.
Untitled Werewolf Thriller stars Stephen Rea (V for Vendetta, The Crying Game), Steven Bauer (Scarface, Primal Fear), Ed Quinn (True Blood, Eureka), Nia Peeples (Pretty Little Liars, Walker Texas, Ranger), Guy Wilson (Almost Kings, Little Black Book), Adam Croasdell (Supernatural, East Enders) andRachel Dipillo (Law & Order,...

Back in June it was first rumored Universal was looking to re-write and rework Michael Tabb's would-be sequel to the failed 2010 effort The Wolfman starring Benicio del Toro and directed by Joe Johnston into a new werewolf franchise. A month later, Moviehole reported Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead, The Hitcher: I've Been Waiting and Carnosaur 2 helmer Louis Morneau would direct for a fall shoot. Now, it has become a reality as Universal announced the start of production on what they describe as an "all-new supernatural Untitled Werewolf Thriller" with Morneau directing. Filming will take place in and around Bucharest, Romania and the film won't be heading to theaters as the studio confirms it will be part of their DVD Originals line alongside such titles as The Scorpion King: Rise of a Warrior and the upcoming January release of [amazon asin="B005TK0WG8" text="The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption"] starring Ron Perlman and Billy Zane. It may or may not be connected to the 2010 debacle that was “The Wolfman”, though it probably is given the film’s setting. Or not. Either way, Universal’s “The Wolfman” reboot (currently going under the very creative “Untitled Werewolf Thriller”) has announced the start of principal photography under director Louis Morneau (“Joy Ride 2″), and had quietly assembled its cast. The plot: A monstrous creature terrorizes a 19th Century European village by moonlight and a young man struggles to protect his loved ones from an unspeakable scourge in Untitled Werewolf Thriller, Universal Studios’ all-new addition to its time-honored legacy of supernatural thrillers. During his studies with the local doctor (Stephen Rea), Daniel (Guy Wilson) witnesses the horrific consequences of werewolf attacks. Watching as the beast’s fearsome reputation draws bounty hunters, thrill seekers and charlatans to the tiny town, Daniel dreams of destroying the ruthless predator. So when a mysterious...

It appears Universal are taking no chances with their second stab at a Wolfman movie after disappointing returns for Joe Johnston's effort last year. THR report that the new, still untitled movie will be heading straight to DVD/Blu-ray. This version began shooting in Bucharest, Romania today and will be directed by Louis Morneau, who previously helmed Joy Ride II and Hitcher II: I’ve Been Waiting. Should be great then eh! Here is a synopsis.. "The movie amps up the action and the werewolf count with a tale set in an unnamed 19th century European village where a werewolf attack draws bounty hunters, thrill seekers and charlatans. A young man studying under a local doctor joins a team of bounty hunters but “it soon becomes clear that this creature is stronger, smarter and more dangerous than anything they have faced before. As casualties mount and villagers see their neighbors transformed into ravening monsters,...

They remade The Wolfman a couple of years ago and did a decent job with that. This new werewolf movie from Universal takes place in 19th century Europe so I’m not sure why they didn’t just make a sequel, but this looks good. Here’s what we know about it at this point:
Universal City, California, October 31, 2011 – There’s no safe place to hide as the all-new supernatural Untitled Werewolf Thriller begins principal photography in and around Bucharest, Romania. Universal celebrates its storied history of creatures and horror with an exhilarating original adventure that embraces the popular cultural resurgence of the age-old werewolf myth. Leave it to Universal Pictures to make an announcement on Halloween about a new werewolf movie they've got cooking. While the company known for giving us Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolfman and The Creature From the Black Lagoon, amongst many other monster movies, has a new lycanthrope film in development, it doesn't have an official title just yet.
Untitled Werewolf Thriller is the working description for the movie. It will also bypass theatrical release and instead head directly for home video, arriving in time for watching during the Halloween season of 2012. Shooting has already started in and around Bucharest, Hungary.
The movie stars Stephen Rea (V For Vendetta, The Crying Game), Steven Bauer (Scarface), Ed Quinn (True Blood, Eureka), Nia Peeples (Pretty Little Liars), Guy Wilson (Almost Kings), Adam Croasdell (Supernatural) and Rachel Dipillo (Law & Order). The Untitled Werewolf Thriller movie is being directed by Louis Morneau (Joy Ride II) from a screenplay by Michael Tabb.

This summer we started to hear rumblings that Universal was prepping a new Wolfman movie [1], and that this might essentially be a reboot of the character, and one that acts like the recent The Wolfman, starring Benicio Del Toro, didn't happen. Those reports were partially correct. Roger Corman veteran Louis Morneau (Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead; The Hitcher II: I’ve Been Waiting; Bats), tipped as the director for this project [2] a few months back, started production today on a film called, for now, Untitled Werewolf Thriller. Stephen Rea, Steven Bauer, Ed Quinn, Nia Peeples, Guy Wilson, Adam Croasdell and Rachel Dipillo are in the cast. But this won't be a theatrical release; this one is a Blu-ray and DVD-only affair that will arrive in time for Halloween 2012. Here's a big chunk o' press release to give you many of the details: There’s no safe place to hide as...

Universal is one of the few studios that has become financially conservative in these tough, economic times, passing on or rejecting big-budgeted projects like Ron Howard's adaptation of The Dark Tower series and director Guillermo del Toro's R-rated adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness. But if there's one thing Universal won't give up on, it's a reboot of 1941's The Wolf Man.
Despite not even earning back its budget on last year's The Wolfman, Universal has given the thumbs up to a second reboot, titled Werewolf. It's not as crazy as it sounds. Initially, Universal was planning a sequel to The Wolfman, but after it bombed at the box office (ironically forcing the studio to shut the door on The Dark Tower and At the Mountains of Madness months later), the sequel was salvaged into the now-reboot of Werewolf.

Earlier we reported that Universal has a reboot of The Wolfman planned called Werewolf. Now it is being reported that Stephen Rea has joined the cast. The news comes from Steven Bauer while doing press for the Scarface Blu-ray. Bauer played "Manny" in the film and is a producer on the project.
Here is what he had to say to MovieHole:
"What I could say is that Stephen Rea is already casted. The great Irish English actor, Stephen Rea is in the film. And another American who’s maybe… Another American, Ed Quinn is in it too."
Stephen Rea is best known for starring in James McTeigue's adaptation of V for Vendetta. Ed Quinn has had a recurring role on SyFy's now-cancelled Eureka, and True Blood. At this time there are no further details about their roles available. The reboot is to be directed by Louis Morneau.

Steven Bauer, Stephen Rea and Ed Quinn are set to star in Universal's upcoming, untitled werewolf film , which may or may not be a sequel to 2010's The Wolf Man . Bauer (discussing his time on Scarface ) told Moviehole in an interview, "I'll go up in Romania in a few days. I'm leaving for five weeks in Romania. I don't know the director quite yet, because they're sending him this week. And it's a Universal project, and it's kind of hush-hush right now. So, what I do know is that I'm going. [chuckle] I'm going and I know my role. [chuckle] So, I play a hunter. I don't play a werewolf. I don't play werewolf. So, that's good to know." Louis Morneau ( Joy Ride 2 ) is directing the new film penned by Michael Tabb.

We learned a couple months ago that Universal is of the philosophy that if at first you don.t succeed, try try again, and will be taking another stab at the werewolf genre. Of course, this tactic did work for Marvel, rebooting The Incredible Hulk merely five years after it.s catastrophically horrible predecessor proved helpful not only to the Avengers series, but to their wallets as well. But The Wolfman tanked just last year, and Universal is already finding a way to rework the sequel into a completely different werewolf project to be helmed by Louis Morneau, veteran direct-to-dvd horror filmmaker. In an interview with Movie Hole, Scarface star Steven Bauer dropped a few names that will appear in the film when it goes into production in a few days. English actor Stephen Rea, who you.ll know better as Finch from V for Vendetta, will be heading to...

Steven Bauer (Scarface, Raising Cain) revealed in an interview with Moviehole that he will star alongside both Stephen Rea (Interview with the Vampire, V for Vendetta) and Ed Quinn ("Eureka") in Universal Home Entertainment's untitled Werewolf, a potential reboot of The Wolfman being directed by Louis Morneau. The new film, penned by Michael Tabb, will take place in a 1901 Romania with the lead character, "Daniel," caring for his sick mother and attending medical school. Daniel is then recruited to join a group of nomad bounty-hunters tracking down "a disturbing presence" terrorizing the town. Daniel and "Charles" quickly bond and must work together to uncover who this new breed of werwolf is. From what I'm being told, this sequel is very "whodunit".

Universal has an exciting new Dtv line, which has featured Death Race 2, Blue Crush 2, and the upcoming Death Race 3 and Scorpion King 3, that deliver theatrical quality to the Dtv movies. After a critical and financial failure that was 2010′s Wolfman from director Joe Johnston, which however won an Oscar for Best Make-up, Universal is aiming to give the hairy one another shot.

We got word today that a pretty interesting addition has been made to the "Monsterverse Horror Comics Ate My Brain" panel being held at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 22nd: Werewolf screenwriter Michael Tabb.
Werewolf, you may recall, is the new stand-alone film from Universal that was originally slated to be a sequel to its less than warmly received The Wolfman from 2010. Maybe we'll finally get some clarification as to the exact nature of the upcoming film to be directed by Louis Morneau (reboot, redux, sequel, or what) during the panel.
As for his Monsterverse connection, Tabb will be writing a sinister nod to "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" for an upcoming issue of Monsterverse's acclaimed Bela Lugosi's Tales from the Grave horror anthology comic book series.
Prior to the addition of Michael Tabb, here are the Monsterverse panel details:

Despite The Wolfman receiving scathing reviews and failing to earn back its production budget even when taking into account international ticket sales — meaning, it lost a ton of money because marketing costs are not figured into the production budget — Universal is not giving up hope that it can somehow capitalize on the furry-faced member of its "Classic Monsters Library."
