Ilayaraja’s Copyright Dispute Rocks Lokesh Kanagaraj’s ‘Coolie’ ( Photo Credit – Facebook )
Ilayaraja has taken swift legal action against the producers of ‘Coolie’ for the unauthorized use of his music in the teaser. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and featuring Rajinikanth, ‘Coolie’ showcased a recreation of Ilayaraja’s song ‘Va va pakkam va’ from ‘Thanga Magan’ from 1983, not the 2015 ‘Thanga Magan,’ which has music composed by Anirudh Ravichander. This move has stirred controversy, with Ilayaraja determined to protect his copyrights.
According to reports, the notice highlighted the absence of formal permission from Ilaiyaraaja, the original owner of the song ‘Va Va Pakkam Va,’ and its music used in the teaser. This act is deemed a violation under the Copyright Act of 1957. The complaint explicitly targets director Lokesh Kanagaraj, alleging habitual involvement in such infringements. Previously, Kanagaraj should have sought permission for the song ‘Vikram Vikram’ in Vikram. Similarly, the music of...

Music maestro Ilaiyaraaja has issued a legal copyright notice to Sun Pictures for unauthorised usage of his music in their latest film ‘Coolie’, starring Tamil megastar Rajnikanth.
Ilaiyaraaja, in the notice, said that the makers of the film had used his musical work in the teaser without authorisation.
Asserting that he is the rightful owner of the music, Ilaiyaraaja said that the makers of the movie did not seek any formal permission from him.
In the notice, Ilaiyaraaja claimed that the teaser of Coolie had a rendition of his song ‘Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa’ from the film ‘Thanga Magan’, also starring Rajinikanth.
This music, according to the petitioner, is remixed in the song ‘Disco’ for Coolie.
The music maestro emphasised that such usage constitutes a clear violation of the Copyright Act (1957).
Furthermore, Ilaiyaraaja pointed out that the director of Coolie, Lokesh Kanagaraj, had previously utilised his compositions in the movie ‘Vikram’ without obtaining consent.

Chennai, April 24 (Ians) A division bench of the Madras High Court has ruled that all the commercial transactions of around 4,500 film songs for which the acclaimed composer R. Ilaiyaraaja had given music to, would be subject to the result of an appeal in a case filed by Echo Recording Private Limited.
The Second Division Bench of Justices R. Mahadevan and Mohammed Shaffiq on Wednesday passed the interim order. The bench, however, recognised the composer’s moral right over his compositions.
The hearing of the appeal has been adjourned till the second week of June.
Senior counsel Vijay Narayan appearing for the appellant contended that a composer who had taken remuneration from a film producer for composing songs could not continue to claim any right over those songs. The senior lawyer quoted profusely from provisions of the Copyright Act of 1957.

‘Music School’ is a slice of life drama revolving around a theatre teacher and music teacher, trying to put together a stage musical based on ‘The Sound of Music’, helmed by former Ias officer and National Award-winning filmmaker Papa Rao Biyyala, marking his full-length feature directorial debut.
The movie opens with a theatre teacher struggling to make his presence count, while other streams take up all the space, students and credit.
Painting, music, theatre, poetry, and such soulful and nourishing creative streams are often sidelined as there is unprecedented academic pressure on students to score good grades, and find a place in reputed professional colleges. But nourishment of the soul is most important; there is nothing worse than the broken spirit of a child.
Shriya Saran (Maria), a music teacher from Goa, joins the school, only to face the same disdain and struggle that Sharman Joshi’s character (drama teacher Manoj) has to contend with.

ReviewVetrimaaran makes several noteworthy cinematic choices, but as a director who seems intent on being taken as a serious political commentator, his own politics still leaves a lot to be desired.Deep in a mountainous jungle, an armed people’s movement is at war with the police. The state apparatus is scrambling to identify the mysterious leader of this movement — Makkal Padai (People’s Army) — who goes by the moniker Vaathiyar. The authorities don’t even know what he looks like. A young police constable (PC) is transferred to one of these remote outposts, setting him on a collision course with powerful men. Director Vetrimaaran’s Viduthalai - Part 1 seems set to tell a gritty political tale led by an actor few would have expected in such a serious and complex role. When the cast for Viduthalai was announced, most Tamil movie watchers were surprised to see Soori in the lead.

In memoriamViswanath’s social commentary and love for classical art are things that can be learned and borrowed, but his deft hand that manoeuvres all these threads into a single tapestry of cohesive beauty belongs to him alone.Courtesy: Wikimedia.Commons/ UttamdabiWhen you are tasked with writing about a man who is a true master at what he did, your hands hover over the keyboard, not knowing where to start. Ever since K Viswanath’s recent demise, social media has been filled with videos of scenes from his 50 films, most of which can be considered masterpieces depending on who you are asking. Viswanath had managed to create a filmography teeming with cinema that tries to teach, without shortchanging the viewer's expectations. You can see his reverence for art in films as early as Kalam Marindi (1972). Films like O Seetha Katha (1974), Siri Siri Muvva (1976), and Seetamahalakshmi (1978) had characters practising some form of art.

OpinionMani Ratnam developed a new syntax for filmmaking, where along with powerful storytelling, the depiction of each frame counted. From the way scenes were staged to songs were choreographed, it was all by design and never by chance.Anand Kumar RSTamil cinema, for as long as it has existed, has been ruled by its stars. From Mgr-Sivaji and Kamal-Rajini to Ajith-Vijay now, stars in pairs have consistently held sway over the Tamil audience and the industry’s market dynamics. But even amid this, once in a while, you see the ascent of a director who makes a mark with his indelible style of filmmaking. In the years of 1960s and 70s, it was CV Sridhar who emerged as the first director whose films were sought after by filmgoers — especially the women. K Balachander would be the next, making his presence felt in the 70s and 80s, followed by Bharathiraja in the 80s and 90s.

Actor Kamal Haasan said that if the music industry was unshackled, it has the potential to grow bigger than cinema in future. Releasing the Tamil version of “O Penne”, an independent album song that has been written, composed, choreographed, and directed by Devi Sri Prasad, which also features him, Kamal Haasan said: “You must understand the significance of Devi Sri Prasad’s move to launch an independent album. There have been instances in the past when independent songs were more popular than film songs.”
However, the actor said that after the advent of cinema, which is a versatile medium, it contained all of this within itself. “Therefore, we are now only scoring music that is demanded by producers or distributors for stories that they are looking to make into films for almost a 100 years.”
Stating that independent music would facilitate independent thought, Kamal stressed on the need to encourage independent music.
