Charles Osgood, the witty CBS News journalist who shepherded “CBS Sunday Morning” for more than two decades — a longer tenure than the show’s original host, Charles Kuralt — died Tuesday at 91 years of age after living for a period of time with dementia, according to CBS News.
He also hosted a durable radio-news segment, “The Osgood File,” between 1971 and 2017. The audio vignettes were heard four times each weekday morning on various stations across the U.S., and Osgood would sometimes analyze a news event, and, in other moments, provide rhyming commentary on the latest headlines. He would sometimes bid listeners farewell by telling them: “I’ll see you on the radio.”
“Short words, short sentences, short paragraphs,” Osgood was known to say. “There’s nothing that can’t be improved by making it shorter and better.”

Charles Osgood, the genial radio and television commentator who anchored CBS Sunday Morning for more than two decades, died Tuesday. He was 91.
Osgood, who also was heard on the radio for more than 50 years with CBS’ The Osgood File, died at his home in New Jersey of dementia, the network announced.
The low-key Bronx native took over CBS’ Sunday program from Charles Kuralt in 1994 and retired in September 2016 as its longest-running host. After handing over the reins to Jane Pauley, he continued to broadcast The Osgood File and contribute stories to CBS News.
In December 2017, Osgood and Westwood One announced an extension to keep The Osgood File going, but he changed course just 15 days later.
“Although I was very much looking forward to continuing … unfortunately my health and doctors will now not allow it. So I will retire from The Osgood File and radio at the end of the year...

It’s a spooky, snowy train ride across thousands of miles of Siberian rails — trapped on board with a victim-possessing creature from outer space, with eyes that kill! Actually, ‘Pánico en el transiberiano’ is a fine show for Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, a Spanish-made chiller with a smart script and some effective shocks.

Hammer’s Dracula goes out with a whimper in this final Chris Lee-Peter Cushing vampire opus, which posits the Prince of Darkness as a super-mogul super-villain (with insufficient infrastructure). He’s battling Scotland Yard, MI5 and his old nemesis Van Helsing, while still arranging ritual sacrifices. And don’t forget the quartet of vampire babes he keeps in the cellar.

Universal has embarked on a long-range plan to preserve and restore its unreleased movie music and, starting next week, release some of these scores as limited-edition soundtrack albums.
The imprint will be called Universal Pictures Film Music Heritage Collection, and its first release, to be formally announced Tuesday, will be Michel Colombier’s music from the 1970 science-fiction film “Colossus: The Forbin Project.”
Following in August will be Henry Mancini’s score for the 1979 Peter Sellers remake of “The Prisoner of Zenda.” Both will be on the La-La Land label, which specializes in movie and TV soundtracks.
“We’re a century-old media company,” Mike Knobloch, Universal Pictures president of global film music and publishing, told Variety. “As much as we’re always looking forward, sometimes we have to look back, and recognize and value our history. Convicted murderer Gary Gilmore, target for Saturday Night Live, punchline for Seinfeld and tagline for Nike, was already a pop-culture sensation when he sat down before a firing squad and proclaimed, “Let’s do this.” The surprising thing about The Executioner’s Song, Norman Mailer’s hardscrabble epic detailing Gilmore’s final months, was that it was decidedly unsensational, a close-to-the-vest yet wide-ranging narrative focused on the killer’s tragedy, not the writer’s ego.
Mailer saw in Gilmore, if not a kindred spirit, at least a rough sketch for one of the novelist’s own conflicted protagonists. Like Mailer, Gilmore had a poetic...

The layoff picture at Sony Pictures is clearing, at least a little bit. The studio was required to file a Worker Adjustment And Retraining Nofication with the state, and it has formally declared that 216 will be the head count. That’s hardly the total picture, however, and it mostly covers the number of employees who’ll be pink slipped on the Culver City lot. Here’s the formal notification. We knew this was going to be a painful week at the studio, but we have not gotten the full head count yet. One more person who was let go is John Cacavas, VP Worldwide Theatrical Distribution. Cacavas has worked up the weekend studio estimates for the last 20 years for distribution head Jeff Blake. Back in the Eighties some cool cover art was all we needed to get us to rent a VHS tape and run home excited. True, more often than not the artwork was not at all reflective of the content, but we still didn't regret it. In fact, I remember renting Mortuary dozens of times for the box art alone.

My love of horror films didn’t start until I was twelve, but as a child in 1974 I recall seeing scenes from a film that featured a white poodle and a monster with eerie, red eyes. I didn’t know the name of it until my grandmother bought a VHS copy of Horror Express in September 1985 from K-mart for the then unheard of amount of eleven dollars. I immediately recognized the images and was delighted to finally know the film that had unnerved me years earlier.
Horror Express takes place at the turn of the 20th Century. Sir Alexander Saxton (Christopher Lee), a British anthropologist, discovers frozen fossils during an archeological dig and takes them aboard the Tran-Siberian Express en route to England. Accompanying him are his colleague Dr. Wells (Peter Cushing) and his assistant Mrs. Jones (Alice Reinheart). Almost immediately,...

I'll admit it. Horror Express is one of my favorite movies on the planet. It's impossible not to love a film featuring horror legends Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing squaring off against an armed with a whip Telly Savalas and a whistling demonic yeti who has the ability to suck your brain smooth of its knowledge, thereby turning you into a mindless white and bloody-eyed zombie!

Few composers have such a long past in network television music as Dick DeBenedictis. A native of New Milford, New Jersey, DeBenedictis never saw himself as a film composer right up until his first commission! He was thrown into the deep end so to speak... Over four decades he provided music for classic episodes of Columbo, Matlock, Father Dowling, Diagnosis Murder and tons of other series' which may not be as well known today. This was all written in addition to a rich background in writing for musical theatre, another major forte of the composer. In my interview with Dick DeBenedictis, we revisit all these shows with a special focus on select episodes of Columbo where Dick had to write music for murderous musicians!
