In real life, Tierney won the 2004 (Season 2) Celebrity Poker Showdown (2003), hosted by Dave Foley. Tierney defeated Lauren Graham at the final table. Foley, Graham and Tierney all appeared in NewsRadio (1995).

- (August 27, 2018) She was riding her bike late morning in Los Angeles when she was involved in the accident. A car hit her back tire, which caused her to fall to the ground. After she was placed in a neck brace and put on a stretcher, Tierney was transported via ambulance to a hospital. An LAPD media relations officer confirmed that the driver involved was not believed to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Maura has been released from the hospital with no major injuries later that day.
