Cinephiles glaze over when it comes to a Hallmark Channel movie.
For some, that crisp, red Hallmark banner promises aspirational storytelling with subtle double entendres, great bankable chemistry between actors, and a cozy Nancy Meyers aesthetic, whether it be for thrillers like “Mystery 101” and “Curious Caterer” or the beloved (and now iconic) Countdown to Christmas banner, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year.
For other, more cynical film fans, Hallmark content can easily be written off as a made-for-tv movie — never mind that some of the most iconic smaller productions in decades past started as made-for-tv films. And Hallmark, much like “Law and Order,” has been a rite of passage for actors, with a fair share of famous alums ranging from Sarah Paulson to Carrie Fisher.
But what about the staple Hallmark stars synonymous with the brand itself after a decade of leading dozens of features per year? Does...

The Diplomat season 2 is officially done filming, according to star Nana Mensah. And, there's even more good news!
Mensah told TV Line that filming wrapped in the UK. She also shared that season 2 should be released on Netflix later this year. It's not the first time that we've heard the new season is going to premiere this year, so that's a great sign for fans who are eagerly awaiting the premiere of season 2 of the Netflix original series starring Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, and David Gyasi.
Mensah also told TV Line that season 2 is “even better, more dynamic, more everything. The tensions have mounted in a way that is really propulsive and exciting.”
So, we don't know when production on The Diplomat season 2 actually wrapped, but it was still in production as late as this spring.

Warning: Major spoilers ahead from The Diplomat season 2 finale from this point forward. Proceed with caution if you have finished all six episodes!

The second season of the Emmy-nominated Netflix original political thriller premiered on Oct. 31 and continued following the high-stakes career of U.S. ambassador Kate Wyler as she carefully maneuvers through a series of stressful situations.

Spoiler Alert! This post contains major plot details from Season 2 of Netflix’s The Diplomat.
Foreign tensions escalate even further in Season 2 of The Diplomat as Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) continues investigating the bombing of a British aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf.
The breakneck six-episode season picks up right where things left off in Season 1, plunging viewers into the panic that broke out after a car bomb exploded in the heart of London, killing Parliament member Merritt Grove and leaving Kate’s husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) as well as her deputy chief of mission Stuart Hayford (Ato Essandoh) severely injured.
Kate and British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) had begun to suspect that Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) was behind both attacks, the first in an effort to quell Scotland’s independence movement and the second to silence Grove. However, as they dig deeper, it turns out...

The Diplomat season 2 finale is a game-changing episode for the series! I truly can’t believe everything that happened in this episode, and now, I can’t wait to see what creator Debora Cahn and the team have planned in The Diplomat season 3.

The Diplomat season 2 episode, “Our Lady of Immaculate Deception,” begins immediately where the fourth episode ended.
In Scotland, Margaret Roylin (Celia Imrie) revealed to Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) that it was actually her who hired Roman Lenkov to create a conflict and stop the Scottish secession movement, but the false flag operation went wrong.
Instead of hearing her out and listening to her reasoning, Trowbridge lost his mind and strangled Roylin. She falls to the ground and hits her head as the CIA agents who planned the operation rush in to pull Trowbridge off of her.
No, Trowbridge doesn’t kill Margaret Roylin
Thankfully, for the sake of the story, Trowbridge doesn’t kill Roylin. She’s injured badly, but she’s not dead. Not yet, anyway. She’s being treated for her wounds when the episode begins.
Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) leaves the room and goes back to the party.

The Diplomat season 2 is getting so good! After two great episodes, the third episode might be the best of the season so far.
The Diplomat season 2 episode 3, “The Ides of March,” begins with a news report of Prime Minister Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) announcing to the world that Roman Lenkov, who was responsible for the attack on the aircraft carrier, was killed by special forces. It was not a firefight, though. It was an assassination.
We immediately see Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) and CIA Station Chief Eidra Park (Ali Ahn) talking about the killing of Lenkov in front of Stuart. Margaret Roylin (Celia Imrie) told Kate and Eidra this would happen, and it did. Now, Stuart Heyford (Eto Assandoh) and Kate would like to turn her over to law enforcement after the main witness (Lenkov) was killed. Eidra won’t do it, though. She wants to learn more about what Roylin is hiding.

The Diplomat season 2 episode 2, “St. Paul’s,” begins with a funeral at St. Paul’s Cathedral for Merritt Grove’s funeral in London.
After calling Kate and the Americans at the end of episode 1, Margaret Roylin (Celia Imrie) is there with Eidra Park (Ali Ahn). She’s making an appearance in public for the first time since the bombing happened. As it appears, the CIA has made it look like many people look like Roylin in attendance to cause a distraction. The Diplomat season 2 begins immediately after the bombing at the end of the season 1 finale.

Warning: This article contains major spoilers from The Diplomat season 2 finale.
Throughout its short but mighty six-episode run, The Diplomat season 2 takes us on a wild ride that doesn't let up once. Until the very last second, we're on the edge of our seats as Kate navigates a series of seemingly impossible situations, weaving in and out of metaphorical minefields.
The new season picks up in the aftermath of the attack in the season 1 finale, which left Hal's life on the line, as well as Stuart's and Ronnie's. It's an emotionally wrought place to begin the season, especially with the consequent series of revelations that completely flip the script on Kate.
By the end of season 2, our jaws are left permanently on the ground, and there's no way to overhype the cliffhanger that completely eclipses that of the previous season. Between Allison Janney, an unexpected ending, and a wide-open door...

American diplomat Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) has been so focused on trying to find traitors abroad that she never thought to suspect anyone back at home — and surely not Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney), a seemingly innocuous character on her way out of office, supposedly because of her husband’s sketchy financial behavior.
Although Kate’s relationship with her own husband, off-duty fellow ambassador Hal (Rufus Sewell), has been tracking toward divorce, their dynamic has grown even more complicated ever since she used their marriage’s “magic trick” to have him filter out essential intel from a British informant.
She’s stunned by the weight of what he’s been holding in, as the Season 2 finale of The Diplomat spirals toward a shocking — and dangerous — changing of the guard.

The Diplomat finds Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) navigating complex diplomatic relations with power players from all over the world. In a fast-paced job handling sensitive issues that can take down entire countries, she’s often whisked away to scenic locations throughout the UK and abroad at the drop of a hat.
Whether it’s to attend a secret meeting with a Russian ambassador at the Foreign Office in London, go toe-to-toe with Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) at Chevening House in Kent, or chat with the French minister of the interior Brielle Fournier (Micky Sébastian) in Paris, the ambassador is always on the move.
In Season 2, the political drama sends Kate to Scotland, which felt particularly rewarding for executive producer Janice Williams.

In April, on the morning before the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, Deadline gathered the stars of Netflix’s The Diplomat, Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell, and the show’s executive producer and showrunner Deborah Cahn, for a conversation with Irish Ambassador Geraldine Byrne Nason at her residence.
During that conversation, Nason said that she sees “a lot” of similarities between her life and the show, but quipped, “Some things I haven’t seen are the skinny dipping or the midnight feasts. In the basement of stately homes, I don’t do much of that.”
Russell and Sewell also spoke about the process of making the first season, with the latter explaining that their chemistry as two married, thrill-seeking foreign ambassadors was “there from day one, and if it’s there, leave it alone.”
For her role as Foreign Ambassador Kate Wyler, Russell said that she does research on stories based loosely on real-life events,...

In honor of the holiday season, Jimmy Fallon is unveiling a brand new game.
“It’s called skeleton costume or three months on Ozempic,” the “Tonight Show” host joked Tuesday night. Fittingly, most of Fallon’s opening monologue was devoted to spooky season. The NBC host also pointed out that it’s expected to be 80 degrees on Halloween in New York City this year.
“If there’s one smell the city doesn’t need it’s damp werewolf,” Fallon joked, adding, “there’s nothing that kids like better than a fun-size tube squeeze of Snickers.”
Halloween is also happening a week before the 2024 presidential election, which is already proving to be a high-stakes time for many. “You know it’s a stressful time when adults show up at your house at Halloween like, ‘Forget candy, do you have any Xanax?'” Fallon said.
The “Tonight Show” host has fully embraced the season this year.

The U.S. has an aging male president who’s expected to pass the torch to his younger female vice president. But something happens that disrupts these plans, and the White House scrambles to find a solution that will allow them to build on their commander-in-chief’s legacy.
That’s the political landscape in the fictional Washington of Netflix’s The Diplomat, as viewers learn early in the first season of the political series starring Keri Russell that the show’s vice president, Grace Penn (played by Allison Janney in the show’s second season, dropping Thursday), has a scandal that, White House aides say, will force her to resign. The aides are also secretly vetting Russell’s career diplomat, Kate Wyler, newly installed as the American ambassador to the U.K., as Penn’s replacement.

When the cast of The Diplomat gathered for the final table read of Season 2, only Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, and Allison Janney knew the wild developments in the last few scenes of the finale. The rest of the cast had received pages with redacted lines — which included that one huge twist.
“You need a genuine response to see if it’s going to do what you think it’s going to do,” says creator, showrunner, and executive producer Debora Cahn from set at Wrotham Park, in Hertfordshire, north of London. “And we got that genuine response.”
Indeed, when Ato Essandoh (who plays Stuart Hayford) heard the lines read aloud, his reaction was visceral. “I literally got up, threw the script down, and screamed!” Essandoh tells Tudum from his trailer between takes, while filming the penultimate scene. “I was like, ‘Oh, my God, Debora Cahn is a gangster.’ ”

When “The Diplomat” premiered last year, it was often compared to “The West Wing.” The comparison made sense. Series creator Debora Cahn cut her teeth as a writer on the show both during and after creator Aaron Sorkin’s tenure. In her new show, she brought the same type of daffy seriousness that defined its predecessor. It also had the same wild tonal swings between screwball comedy and political thriller but without the preachiness that defined the Sorkin walk-and-talk.

The first season of this top-notch international thriller began with a bombing (of a British aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf) and ended with a bombing. It’s understandable that one might require a refresher, considering that Season 1 dropped a year and a half ago in April 2023. The good news is that the taut, tart, and very witty Season 2 of The Diplomat is very much worth the wait, albeit shortened from eight to six episodes, and by the end will almost certainly have everyone thirsting for an already-commissioned third season. Let’s hope it’s not as long a wait. For now, it’s just a joy to revel in the entertaining intrigue when Keri Russell (The Americans) reprises her Emmy-nominated performance as Kate Wyler, the seasoned foreign service officer turned reluctant U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom. Uneasy with the post’s ...

She may not don camo or train for combat, but even in pantsuits and the occasional cocktail dress, Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) is always ready for battle. The US ambassador to the United Kingdom is committed to finding justice for the British Royal Navy personnel murdered in an attack on the Hms Courageous warship, as well as her own foreign service officer Ronnie Buckhurst (Jess Chanliau), killed by a car bomb that also took the life of British MP Merritt Grove (Simon Chandler) and critically injured her own deputy chief of mission, Stuart Hayford (Ato Essandoh), and husband, Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell).
In Episode 4 of the second season of The Diplomat, Kate and her allies from both the American and British embassies take their strategy on the road to Scotland, which has been threatening secession from the UK. They plot a precarious plan to prove their suspicions that British...

Every word uttered could be a key. Every move made could be a tell. The delicate chessboard of foreign affairs, even among allies, is always laced with dire consequences in the Netflix political thriller The Diplomat, from creator Debora Cahn. But now that it’s set against the memorial services of two colleagues, one American and one Brit, the most catastrophic consequences are cast to the forefront in the second episode of Season 2.
When US Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) was reassigned from Kabul to London, she thought she’d be thrust into a world of tea parties and curtsies — not quite her style. But now that British MP Merritt Grove (Simon Chandler) and her embassy’s own aide Ronnie Buckhurst (Jess Chanliau) are dead, Kate is starting to understand why she was sent here … and also feeling the emotional strains her husband, Hal Wyler (Rufus...

‘The Diplomat’ Season 2 Review: Keri Russell Is Stellar in Netflix’s Sharpest, Silliest Drama Series
“Politics.”
When CIA station chief Eidra Park (Ali Ahn) wants more information about a relationship that’s critical to ongoing negotiations, Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) has a one-word response: “Politics.” But like everything else in “The Diplomat,” Netflix’s meticulous and maniacal drama series, it’s not just what was said, but also how what’s said is said, what was said before, and, of course, what’s not said.
When Kate says “politics,” she’s being dismissive, sure, but she’s still telling her friend and ally all she needs to know. By squeezing her eyes shut before opening them to deliver a firm, unflinching gaze, Kate’s saying that’s all she’s going to share on the matter. But just a sentence before, when asked about her “unusually close” relationship with U.K. Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), she also said, “We’re slightly less close than we were,...

“The Diplomat” Season 2 is the bastard lovechild of “The West Wing,” Armando Iannucci’s British political satires and his American “Veep.” Whip-smart, psychologically insightful and sexy without sleaze, the series created by Debora Cahn is only getting better as it speeds into its second lap on Netflix this Halloween. The streamer has already greenlit a third season, signaling an awareness of the show’s quality and that audiences are tuning in.

Keri Russell is a television star who commands the screen in almost anything she is in. However, her role as Ambassador Kate Wyler is easily her best. Russell reigns supreme in the second season of The Diplomat, a show so smart, so funny, and so damn entertaining that it should be required viewing for any student in any screenwriting course.
Debora Cahn’s The Diplomat is simply the smartest show on television! The writing is masterful, the dialogue is addictive, and the performances are compelling on almost every level. Perhaps no other series on television works on so many different levels so effortlessly. The characters are complex, the themes are timely, and the plot is suspenseful and strategic.

Editor’s note: Spoilers for Season 1 of “The Diplomat.”
Viewers would be forgiven for not remembering all the details from the explosive (literally!) Season 1 finale of “The Diplomat.”
A lot happened in the eight-episode first season — even before the fire-y final moments that found Kate’s (Keri Russell) husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) possibly blown up by a car bomb. At one point, even more international shit was going to go down.
“Because I’m an idiot, I believed that in the first season, the entire plot that is Season 1 and Season 2 would fit into Season 1,” creator Debora Cahn told IndieWire. “We then got to Episode 7, and I started writing 7, and I was like, ‘This is too much plot. This is stupid.'”
Needless to say, the team hit the ground running in Season 2, which picks up immediately after the explosion. In the Season 1 finale, Kate, the titular U.S. diplomat to the U.

The Diplomat Season 2 is almost here but with fewer episodes than season 1. Sure, Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler will still have plenty to navigate in the TV show‘s shortened season. But why the change? It came down to the creator of the Netflix political drama. Spoiler: It’s not a permanent change.

There’s not a second to waste when The Diplomat returns in Season 2.
Picking up mere minutes after a bomb explosion rattled the Season 1 finale, US Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) is on the hunt for information in the first three minutes of Season 2. Follow her lead now in the clip above, before the rest of the season drops on Oct. 31.
Of the four victims of the blast, the three injured and one deceased include Kate’s husband Hal (Rufus Sewell), Kate’s Deputy Chief of Mission Stuart Hayford (Ato Essandoh), office clerk Ronnie (Jess Chanliau), and MP Merritt Grove (Simon Chandler). But we don’t know who’s survived. As British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) relays to his team, “I’d like to be able to tell the ambassador whether her husband is alive or dead.”

“It was my decision. [Netflix] was not happy. They wanted the full eight [episode count],” Debora told TVLine. Instead, season two will only feature six episodes.

Keri Russell’s titular ambassador Kate Wyler will be getting less screen time when The Diplomat returns on Oct. 31. And that’s because the Netflix drama itself has been cut down in size: Season 2 consists of just six episodes.
In an interview with TVLine, series creator Debora Cahn reveals that the call to reduce the episode count from eight (which was Season 1’s total) to six came from inside the house.
