New emotions are introduced and old emotions are suppressed in the official trailer for Pixar’s Inside Out 2. The trailer was accompanied by details on the new characters joining the fun inside Riley’s head for the sequel.
Maya Hawke as Anxiety: A bundle of frazzled energy, Anxiety enthusiastically ensures Riley’s prepared for every possible negative outcome. Ayo Edebiri as Envy: Envy may be small, but she sure knows what she wants. She’s perpetually jealous of everything everyone else has, and she’s not afraid to pine over it. Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui: Ennui couldn’t care less. Bored and lethargic with a well-practiced eye-roll, Ennui adds the perfect amount of teenage apathy to Riley’s personality when she feels like it. Paul Walter Hauser as Embarrassment: Embarrassment likes to lay low, which isn’t easy for this burly guy with a bright blush-pink complexion.

Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has dropped another teaser trailer with three new animated characters voiced by Paul Walter Hauser, Ayo Edebiri and Adèle Exarchopoulos sharing main character Riley’s (Kensington Tallman) now-teenage mind.
Joining Amy Poehler as Joy, Phyllis Smith as Sadness and Lewis Black as Anger are Maya Hawke as Anxiety; Edebiri’s new and perpetually jealous animated character Envy; Exarchopoulos’ bored and eye-rolling Ennui emotion; and Hauser voicing his burly, yet red-faced, character of Embarrassment.
The sequel also features new voices for fear and disgust, with Tony Hale replacing Bill Hader and Liza Lapira replacing Mindy Kaling, respectively.
“You got a real sweaty palm there, buddy,” Riley, about to begin high school, tells a cowering Embarrassment after they shake hands. The trailer has other emotions in the head of the newly minted teenager in predictable turmoil as Lilimar Hernandez voices Valentina “Val” Ortiz, a high school hockey player everyone,...

When Hulu announced they were going to revive "Futurama" for a third time, the good news (everyone) was immediately chased by the bad news that actor John Dimaggio -- who plays Bender and numerous other characters on the show -- may not return. The actor explained in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) back in February 2022 that the studio didn't offer him enough money, but more than that, were seemingly dismissive -- in an unspecified way -- of the entire voice cast. This led to a month-long contract standoff wherein it looked like Dimaggio may actually quit the show and move on. This would have been unthinkable to "Futurama" fans, as Bender was one of the most important characters on the show, and having another actor -- no matter how good they were -- would seem like too large a change to accept.

Judy Tenuta, an unconventional, often brash stand-up comic who guested on numerous TV shows and appeared in two “Weird” Al Yankovic videos, died October 6 of ovarian cancer in Studio City, CA. She was 72.

This story about “Hacks” first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Like all good stories about comedians, “Hacks,” the HBO Max series that stars Jean Smart as a fading Las Vegas comic, began on the road.
“We were actually on a road trip many years ago,” Jen Statsky, who co-created “Hacks” with Paul W. Downs and Lucia Aniello, said. “Paul was shooting his ‘The Characters’ special for Netflix, and Lucia and I were there to help out. And we just started talking about female comedians and women in the arts in general — women of a certain age who hadn’t really gotten their due, while their male counterparts had a seemingly much easier path and got recognition. We were talking about these iconic women who nevertheless kept pounding the pavement, got knocked down 1,000 times and got back up 1,001 times. And we just became fascinated with telling that story.

We were talking about these iconic women who nevertheless kept pounding the pavement, got knocked down 1,000 times and got back up 1,001 times. And we just became fascinated with telling that story.

“I’m sticking with Gavin Newsom,” said comedian George Lopez about the California recall in an Instagram video on Tuesday, “and I’m voting ‘No.'”
Lopez did not berate others who might vote “Yes.”
“You do what you do, and I’ll do what I do,” he said.

The endorsement video is less than 30 seconds, but likely coveted by the embattled governor. A CBS poll released Sunday shows the recall vote a virtual dead heat. Fifty-two percent of likely voters said Newsom should not be recalled, while 48 percent said he should be removed. That difference, however, falls within the poll’s 4-point margin of error, meaning the true result is anyone’s guess.

Shortly after “Hacks” premiered, one popular fan theory about the Jean Smart-led HBO Max comedy was that her stand-up comedian Deborah Vance was modeled after the late Joan Rivers.
After all, she was an older female comedian who experienced a lifetime in front of the camera, including an all-too-short tenure as a late-night TV host. TheWrap caught up with “Hacks” co-creators Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky a few hours after the show was nominated for 15 Emmy, and asked if they based Smart’s Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance on anyone specific.
Here’s what they said.
“She’s an amalgamation of a lot of people,” said Downs, who also stars in the show as Deborah and Ava’s (Hannah Einbinder) manager. “She started as a stage act with her then partner, kind of like a Nichols and May. So there’s Elaine May in there. She...

What makes HBO Max’s “Hacks” stand out from a slew of new TV offerings (and other shows about the same topic of stand-up comedy), isn’t just its stellar cast, it’s also the premise that two women share a connection, despite being worlds apart, through the desire of making others laugh. And in an even more special twist of fate, the actors also found a similar connection in how they drew from real-life comedians for their roles.
“I thought that it would be a blast to play a stand-up comedian,” Smart reveals to Variety. “I fantasized about that when I was 12; I wanted to be Phyllis Diller.”
Set in Las Vegas, “Hacks” follows canceled comedian Ava (Hannah Einbinder) who begrudgingly heads to the Nevada to work with the only other person who will currently employ her, stand-up legend Deborah Vance (Smart). In an attempt to keep each other relevant,...

Coinciding with this year’s 27th annual Lucille Ball Comedy Festival, named after its most famous native, the National Comedy Center is set to open in Jamestown, N.Y. The fest takes place Aug. 1-5 with more than 50 events and 40 artists. Among those on hand to help celebrate what is being branded as the first non-profit institution and national-scale visitors experience dedicated to the art of comedy will be Lily Tomlin, Amy Schumer, Fran Drescher, original “Saturday Night Live” cast members Dan Aykroyd, Laraine Newman, Garrett Morris and “SNL” writer, bestselling author and Tony Award-winning playwright Alan Zweibel.
“It’s not a hall of fame, which is what I like about it, and what they’re doing is a really important thing,” says Zweibel, who is on the advisory committee. “You can visit any era you want or any medium and get the aura of what things were like when they were produced.

A new generation of fans has discovered Paula Poundstone as a regular on NPR’s panel game show Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!, but her success as a stand-up stretches back to the early days of the 1980s comedy boom. Her 1990 HBO special Cats, Cops and Stuff, which includes the Pop-Tarts bit that we featured on our list of “100 Jokes that Defined Modern Comedy," is a perfect embodiment of her style, a mix of observational stand-up and audience improvisation. Bobcat Goldthwait got his odd nickname from his comedy club mentor, Barry “Bearcat” Crimmins, the patriarch of Boston’s standup comedy boom of the 1990s and early employer of Paula Poundstone, Denis Leary, and Stephen Wright. Unable to realize his dream of director pal Robin Williams in a Crimmins biopic, Goldthwait instead created “Call Me Lucky,” a documentary about Crimmins, whose act was a political rant akin to Lewis Black’s. Goldthwait has certainly come a long way since he trashed Crimmins’ place while high on booze, LSD and cocaine as a young comedian. (There’s a brief scene of the young,...

Chicago – It starts with the imagination, and the story that comes from that lightning inner creativity. Nobody, it seems, does it better than Pixar Animation, and they are taking it all to a new level. For your consideration, and in a perfect world a candidate for Best Picture, “Inside Out.”
Rating: 5.0/5.0
What is striking is the simplicity of the story, imagining the brain as a control center having a switch oriented panel, with personified “controllers” representing Joy, Anger, Fear, Sadness and Disgust. Whoever “controls” the panel controls the emotion of the human – in this case an 11 year old girl going through a life transition. The structure of this vision, presupposing that the brain is made up of colorful “go to” points for mental survival, is nothing short of genius. It works immediately upon introduction, and builds throughout the girl’s state of being until it blooms into a glorious resolution.

Up until a few years ago, the annual release of an animated feature from Pixar was greeted with much hype and a sense that the company could do no wrong. Then, a couple of less than universally beloved flicks came out and the brand was running the risk of no longer being the gold standard for animated endeavors. Well, now that Inside Out is on its way to audiences this Friday, I can say that no only is this a return to form for them, it’s one of Pixar’s best yet. One of their most ambitious, Inside Out is in some ways their most mature effort as well. It’s really something to rave about. With a hugely high concept premise, this one rivals anything else from the studio in terms of ambition. Inside Out tells the story of preteen girl Riley (voice of Kaitlyn Dias), who is...

Make people laugh and they won't even realize you're making them think. Over the past 50 years, women have broken through the glass ceiling time after time, shattering stereotypes and thumbing their noses at the old chestnut that "Women aren't funny." Fact: Anybody who says women aren't funny doesn't want them to be funny. We're looking back on the 50 funniest women of the past 50 years, their contributions to comedy, and their enduring legacies that inspire men and women alike. These are the 50 women who have helped (and are helping) to introduce the next class of hilarious women, which will inevitably include Amy Schumer, Lena Dunham, Mindy Kaling, Tig Notaro, Chelsea Handler, Maria Bamford, Aubrey Plaza, and Kate McKinnon. Keep in mind this list only includes women who are primarily performers in movies, television, and standup comedy. That's why you don't see legends like Nora Ephron, Anne Beatts, and Elaine May here.

"To Tell the Truth," one of the greatest television game shows with a timeless conceit, is purportedly coming back to air. Fremantle is heading up a new primetime version of the series that puts "an update of the familiar format with a surprising new twist that adds action and suspense and raises the stakes." I'm all for it! "To Tell the Truth" is -- with the possible exception of "What's My Line?" -- the best panel game in TV history: Four celebrities interrogate three contestants who all claim to be the same person, and then the celebrities vote on which candidate is telling the truth. It's the show that's most responsible for putting Kitty Carlisle and Peggy Cass into our cultural lexicon, and it's what Eminem is referencing when he famously asked, "Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?" The current television climate can be best summed up by the lyric Billy Joel famously sings in "We Didn't Start the Fire," "Rock and Roller Late Night wars, I can't take it anymore." When David Letterman announced his retirement a little over a month ago (doesn't it feel like it was a million years ago?), he set off a chain reaction of people leaving and getting jobs. None of those people getting jobs were women (at least yet). Last night, on Late Night, Tina Fey explained her theory on why that was the case: jackets! We'll let her explain it below, but suffice to say, if you are a young female comedian who wants to be a late-night host one day, you better start consulting Paula Poundstone's stylist.

On comedy being a boy’s club when she started out:
"Look at the women that are in it: Ellen DeGeneres, lesbian. Rosie O’Donnell, lesbian. Paula Poundstone, lesbian. Jane Lynch, lesbian.… Seriously, it’s not a boys’ club, and it wasn’t then. It just didn’t appeal to women, and when I started in the ’60s, if you were pretty, you were a singer. You didn’t want to stand onstage and make a fool of yourself. Women [had to be] very strong and not attractive to be considered funny.
