The reason behind Netflix's cancellation of Julie and the Phantoms is as mysterious as the show's well-dressed villain.
Why cancel a show with an audience score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and nearly a million loyal followers on Instagram?
"Fantoms," as the most devoted fans call themselves, are baffled and heartbroken.
From renowned director Kenny Ortega, Julie and the Phantoms follows 15-year-old Julie Molina (Madison Reyes) a year after her mother's death. When she puts on one of her mom's old CDs, she unwittingly releases the three striking members of the band Sunset Curve.
The kicker: they're all dead.
To convince you why Julie and the Phantoms deserves a second season, let's start with why its first season attracted so many to their screens.
There would be no Julie and the Phantoms without, well, Julie and her phantoms. The bond between the titular characters is the show's beating heart.

Netflix has opted not to renew Julie and the Phantoms for a second season. Kenny Ortega, the musical dramedy’s executive producer, choreographer and director, announced the news on Instagram.
“We learned this week that Netflix will not be picking us up for another season,” he wrote next to photos from the set of the show. “Although our hearts are saddened, we move on with such pride for what we accomplished as a team and the family we built while creating Julie.” (See his full post below.)
The cancellation of Julie and the Phantoms, based on the Brazilian children’s seriesJulie e osFantasmas, comes more than a year after its first season was released on Netflix Sept. 10. The U.S. adaptation starred Madison Reyes as Julie, a high schooler who lost her passion for music after her mom died the year before. But when the ghosts of three dreamy musicians from 1995 suddenly appear in her mom’s old music studio, Julie feels her own inner spirit begin to reawaken and is inspired to start singing and writing songs again. As their friendship with Julie grows, the boys convince her to create a new band together: Julie and the Phantoms.
Booboo Stewart, Cheyenne Jackson, Carlos Ponce, Sonny Bustamante, Jadah Marie, Sacha Carlson and Savannah Lee May rounded out the cast.
Dan Cross and David Hoge created the U.S. version and served as showrunners and executive producers, with George Salinas and Jaime Aymerich of Crossover Entertainment as well as Michel Tikhomiroff and Fabio Danesi for Mixer Entertainment.

It is a compelling hook and somewhat interesting to have Richards move from one of the most successful reality shows to a movie with a similar title.

The premise of Julie and the Phantoms goes like this: a girl who recently lost her mother and her passion for music is surprised by three ghosts who reignite the musician in her, and as a result, they form a band.
Sounds a bit cheesy, right?
Well, it is, but cheesy is just another word for heartwarming and full of hope and inspiration, which is exactly the thing we all need right about now.
Plus the show hails from the genius that is Kenny Ortega, whose movies never fail to make people smile.
Arguably for all ages, Julie and the Phantoms has been a hit with audiences who love the show for not only its music, but for the chemistry between the characters, and the uplifting storylines.
With each episode being around thirty minutes, it's easy to get lost in the music and binge the entire show in one sitting.

This review of Julie and the Phantoms contains no spoilers.
Probably the only thing you need to know about Julie and the Phantoms before going in is that its executive producer is Kenny Ortega. If that doesn’t instantly ring a bell – well, he’s the guy who directed the High School Musical movies, the Descendants movies, and, of course, the evergreen Halloween classic Hocus Pocus. This nine-part supernatural teen drama is the first of his projects for Netflix, and it’s just as charming, warm, and finger-snappingly musical as you’d expect.
Julie (newcomer Madison Reyes) is a 15-year-old singer-songwriter who recently lost her mother. Her grief has put a damper on her creativity, and as a result she’s close to getting kicked out of her school’s prestigious music program. Then she meets cute up-and-coming indie rock band Sunset Curve and rediscovers her voice. Her teachers are impressed,...

Carlos Ponce is a die-hard Jennifer Lopez fan and he wants the world to know it. The singer and actor recently posted a meme where he inserted himself in Alex Rodriguez’s place in the red-hot Vanity Fair photo that features the former baseball player lifting up girlfriend JLo’s dress to reveal her famous booty. “Thank you @vanityfair for a very tasteful shoot,” reads Ponce’s caption. “This is my Halloween outfit,” he adds alongside the meme that shows his face on Rodriguez’s tuxedo-clad body.

Carlos Ponce has interviewed and acted alongside some of the biggest names, but there is one person that he still hasn't forgotten meeting—even 20 something years later. At the beginning of his career, the 44-year-old star interviewed the late Selena Quintanilla, and they met a few other times after that. "Oh, I totally remember that day[that they met]. It's actually very fresh in my mind. Because I think I haven't grown up and that it's only been a couple of years. I had a really good time, you know, Selena was already Selena. So to me, it was a big deal that I was interviewing her. She was very, very sweet. My first show ever for Control I met Selena," he tells E!...

We love #TBTs, especially when they're 18 years old! Actor Carlos Ponce rolled out some epic throwbacks. Seriously, epic! The Cristela star went way back with this pic of himself and Sofía Vergara from Fuera de Serie, a show that the Colombian actress hosted from 1995 to 1998. The 43-year-old actor must have been digging through old photo albums for hours, because he was also able to find this photo with a very young Ricky Martin. 'Spy' movie poster with Melissa McCarthy. 'Spy' movie review: 'Transgressive' feminist statement There's been a lot of talk around the ol' virtual water cooler about the feminist messaging embedded in Mad Max: Fury Road. George Miller's riveting, post-apocalyptic free-for-all features the male title character taking a back seat to a fierce, battle-scarred woman liberating five female sex slaves and delivering them to a group of women suggestively called the Vulvani and said to be living in a restorative oasis called the Green Place of Many Mothers. It's Trojan horse feminism, for sure: many guys would think twice about the movie if they knew what Miller was trying to say with it. And yet for all its ragged, dust-choked, girl-power finery, there is another feminist statement at a theater near you that, in its own way, is just as transgressive. Spy is an action comedy where the hero,...

[In case you've Forgotten, and as I will continue to mention each and every one of these posts that I do: This is *not* a review. Pilots change. Sometimes a lot. Often for the better. Sometimes for the worse. But they change. Actual reviews will be coming in September and perhaps October (and maybe midseason in some cases). This is, however, a brief gut reaction to not-for-air pilots. I know some people will be all "These are reviews." If you've read me, you've read my reviews and you know this isn't what they look like.] Show: "Cristela" (ABC) The Pitch: "Cristela Alonzo is fairly popular with a certain audience and if you just schedule it on Friday after 'Last Man Standing,' nobody will even notice if it fails. Remember 'Malibu Country'?" "Huh?" "Exactly." Quick Response: There isn't much to say here beyond a repetition of what I already wrote about "Mulaney" and "The McCarthys." In person at TCA press tour, Cristela Alonzo was smart, funny and her energy and enthusiasm were infectious. Her stories about her upbringing and her early days in comedy were amusing and entertaining. However, in the context of the pilot she co-created with Kevin Hench, Alonzo isn't exactly sure how to capture that energy and enthusiasm on camera. Multi-cam probably is a good choice for "Cristela," because Alonzo's style isn't small. She's very expressive and periodically loud and you can understand why she'd want the approval of an...

Now that it is just barely summer, it’s time for the networks to try their best to get you excited for fall television. ABC wants you to get excited for their schedule, and their new shows, and I’ve got some previews for you, as well as some initial thoughts.

ABC's last bubble show has been spared! It's not a big surprise but "Last Man Standing," a consistent under-the-radar success for ABC on Friday nights, has been picked up for a fourth season. The "Last Man Standing" pickup comes after Friday's late renewal for "Nashville" and leaves ABC with no remaining shows in limbo. ABC also continued its restocking of the pantry after the cancellations of comedies including "Trophy Wife," "Super Fun Night" and "Mixology" by picking up a pair of new sitcoms. Joining ABC's schedule for the 2014-15 season are "Cristela" and "Fresh Off the Boat," which will combine with the previously ordered "Black-ish" to give ABC a comedy slate positively bursting with somewhat segregated diversity. "Fresh Off The Boat" comes from "Don't Trust the B**** in Apartment 23" creator Nahnatchka Kahn and follows in the footsteps of this season's period coming-of-age comedies. Set in the '90s, it's...

The last comedy standing has been renewed: ABC picked up Tim Allen’s sitcom Last Man Standing for a fourth season.
The order decides the fate of the final comedy series on the bubble from the 2013-14 season. Just a few shows remain in limbo, such as NBC’s Parenthood (expected to return) and Dracula (unlikely). Earlier this week, Last Man Standing’s Friday night companion, The Neighbors, was canceled along with several other ABC comedies (full list of axed shows this week is here).
In addition, ABC announced two more new comedy series orders: Cristela and Fresh Off the Boat.
