Between "Blade Runner" and the "Star Wars" saga, Harrison Ford may very well be one of the first actors you think of when someone talks about science fiction films. It's hard to believe now, but Ford actually wasn't a sci-fi fan in his early acting days. You may have heard that Ford started in summer stock theater then moved to Los Angeles to become a contract actor for a while at Columbia Pictures, all while working a day job as a carpenter. In fact, he was doing that even after his first film with George Lucas, "American Graffiti."
In a Rolling Stone interview from 1980, back when "Star Wars: Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back" was released in theaters, Ford spoke about his start. Over 40 years later, Ford is starring in the TV series "1923" with Helen Mirren and "Shrinking" with Jason Segel, with "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny...

Before traversing the galaxy in the Millennium Falcon, Harrison Ford cruised the strip around Modesto, California, in his '55 Chevy in George Lucas's coming-of-age dramedy "American Graffiti." It was something of a breakout role for Ford, who managed to make the drag racing cowboy Bob Falfa stand out in a relatively short amount of screen time. Ford turned 30 during filming, and had already been put through the cookie cutter machine of the Hollywood system. Appearing in bit parts on shows like "The F.B.I." to little fanfare, Ford became a carpenter to the stars, even building a recording studio for bossa nova legend Sergio Mendes. Embittered by his experiences as a performer, Ford still had the acting bug in his blood, though. His father was a radio actor and ad man from Chicago -- and his grandfather was a vaudevillian.
But no matter what Ford tried, he just wasn't getting noticed.

If boxing champ Oscar de la Hoya does return to the ring, you’ll have “The Masked Dancer” to thank.
De la Hoya was the next celebrity to be revealed on the show, as the person under the Zebra costume on Wednesday’s edition of the hit series. He was unmasked after dancing to Bobby Darin’s “Mack the Knife,” in tribute to a loved one he lost to cancer.
Asked to comment on whether he may come out of retirement to box again, de la Hoya was coy — but he did tell Variety that, “Let’s just say that Mike Tyson inspired me to train, to start training in the gym. I’ve actually been in the gym for the last about five months. And, you know, who knows, maybe the Zebra is making a comeback!”
De la Hoya said the pandemic did offer him time to focus on training as well.

The fiery Zebra has been bringing the heat on Season 1 of “The Masked Dancer,” quick-hoofing his way into the Super Six with a pair of fringe-shaking performances. After shimmying his way through his opening number, panelists Paula Abdul, Brian Austin Green, Ken Jeong and Ashley Tisdale praised the Zebra’s costume and high-energy performance. In the Group B playoffs the striped dancer slowed things down to prove he wants to step into the limelight and win the Fox reality TV dancing competition’s Diamond Mask trophy.

Elizabeth Smart wasn’t interested at first in appearing on Fox’s “The Masked Dancer.” But after her grandmother passed away, Smart said she had an epiphany.
“She certainly lived life to the fullest,” Smart said. “As I was sitting at her funeral, thinking about life and death, I just thought, it’s okay to have fun. It’s okay to do something happy. Not everything I do has to be 100% serious all the time. I’m more than just a one-sided person, so why not.”
Smart was revealed to be the person under the Moth costume on Wednesday’s edition of “The Masked Dancer.” Smart said she also felt that after the dark events of 2020, she wanted to do something light hearted and fun.

Bill Nye the Science Guy has been a recreational dancer for years, a hobby he took to “Dancing with the Stars” in 2013. On Wednesday, he was back hoofin’ it on TV — this time, on Fox’s “The Masked Dancer,” where he was revealed as the celebrity under the Ice Cube costume.
“If I have a chance to dance, Bring it on!” Nye told Variety. “I jumped at it. I like being on television.”
As Ice Cube, Nye performed a swing dance to a cover of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” by Postmodern Jukebox. The clue package focused on climate change and the environment, causes that Nye is deeply involved in.
“The thing that was a little tricky, you couldn’t see your partner’s hand,” he said. “In swing dancing or ballroom dancing, there’s this whole business of the connection. You’re holding hands, and generally the lead’s...

[Update Nov. 2: Jeannie Mai has withdrawn from “Dancing with the Stars” after being hospitalized over the weekend, so there will now only be one elimination.]
A double elimination means double the dances on “Dancing with the Stars” — but it’s not two whole routines. In addition to their individual numbers, the top nine couples will face off in relays on Monday.
The nine pairs will be split into three relay groups — cha-cha, samba or Viennese waltz — and each couple will perform one at a time during their respective relays. One judge will be assigned to each group and will rank the couples within that group for bonus points. The points will be added to their individual scores and the live votes for the double elimination.
“Dancing” hasn’t done relays in a hot minute, but now’s a good time as any to bring it back since it can’t do team dances because of Covid-19 precautions.

You see this guy? You may remember his trumpet but probably not his voice, although he did sing on one of his two number 1 hits. Herb Alpert led the Tijuana Brass, a band of crack session players, through the incidental music of the 1960s. He is the A in A&m Records. The upcoming documentary Herb Alpert Is… will chronicle Alpert’s 60-year career as bandleader, producer, label executive, musician, philanthropist, and visual artist. It will have its live streaming premiere screening on Oct. 1. It will hit theaters and VOD on Oct. 2, 2020, the same day as a Herb Alpert Is… 68-track box set.

“You see your whole life flash in front of you in an hour and some minutes, and then it’s like, wow, did all that really happen? Because I always felt I’m in somewhat of a dream to begin with,” says Herb Alpert, subject of a new documentary about his life from director John Scheinfeld. It’s a dream that now has a release date: “Herb Alpert Is…” is hitting theaters and VOD on Oct. 1.
The doc will be the rare movie with a three-cd soundtrack, of sorts. It’s being announced today that Oct. 2 will see the release of a box set commemorating Alpert’s career, also titled “Herb Alpert Is…” The collection is not officially a soundtrack, as only a portion of its 63 tracks appear in the movie, but it fills a larger need as the first large-scale set celebrating the entirety of the legendary trumpeter’s nearly six-decade catalog.

The action thriller is being produced by L.A.-based Automatic Media’s Ray Haboush (“The Last House on the Left”) and Robert Aaronson (“Chocolate City”). Great Point co-founders Robert Halmi and Jim Reeve will exec produce.
The story follows the strangers as they wake up on the plane, which is running on autopilot. They have no idea who they are, how they got there or who they can trust. “I was immediately hooked by the brilliant concept at the heart of this project, and I’m excited by the possibilities for an amazing cinematic experience,” Prieto said.

The title of the just-completed documentary “Dave Grusin: Not Enough Time” reflects the subject’s lament that there aren’t enough hours in the day or days in the year for all the music that needs to be made. That desire to stretch the clock might seem hyperbolic coming from other musicians, but not for someone whose hats have included film and TV scorer, concert performer, producer and jazz label mogul, often all at once.
At a post-screening Q&A in Santa Monica this week, the great jazz bassist Marcus Miller spoke about being a youthful protege and watching Grusin casually change hats mid-day… and assuming that was normal.
“I started playing with Dave Grusin when I was 17, 18 — I don’t know how old, but I know I had braces,” Marcus laughed. “To see him run a session, and then know that he’s going to score a movie that night after the session…...

This article marks Part 25 of the Gold Derby series analyzing 84 years of Best Original Song at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at the timeless tunes recognized in this category, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the winners.
The 2010 Oscar nominees in Best Original Song were:
“Coming Home” from “Country Strong”
“If I Rise” from “127 Hours”
“I See the Light” from “Tangled”
“We Belong Together” from “Toy Story 3”
Won: “We Belong Together” from “Toy Story 3”
Should’ve won: “If I Rise” from “127 Hours”
Best Original Song in 2010 marked one of the most deadly-dull line-ups to ever grace the category, a sleepy, entirely unremarkable batch of four songs that is exceedingly difficult to select a favorite among.
Voters, faced with this anemic foursome, opted to go with Oscar mainstay Randy Newman, awarding him a second Best Original Song prize, this time for “We Belong Together.

Aretha Franklin’s genius took so many forms — as a singer, a songwriter, an album-crafter, a live performer. But the Queen was also one of history’s most audacious Beatle fans. Nobody ever sang the Beatles like Aretha. Since she was one of the few Sixties musicians as famous and revered as they were, she felt free to take any approach she pleased to a Fabs song — sometimes radically reworking it, as when she sang “Eleanor Rigby” in the first person. When Aretha sang any song, even a Beatle song,...

Every thrift store I’ve ever been in has one.
You can see the cover of Whipped Cream and Other Delights‘ bright green background even deep in a stack. The real attraction, to a teenaged crate diver, is Dolores Erickson, covered in “whipped cream” (actually shaving cream), staring alluringly into the camera.
Herb Alpert‘s music, in the wild, is similarly inescapable: I have no statistics to back this up, but I would wager that roughly 99 percent of the world’s population has, at some point, heard “Spanish Flea,” if not directly, than through some kind of cultural osmosis. But...

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, Harrison Ford was not yet Hollywood royalty, but a young, hot, ripped, shirtless actor with questionable taste in hats. Brazilian musician Sergio Mendes did the world a solid last week when he shared a photo of Harrison during that beautiful moment in time, captioning the amazing throwback, "'The Force Awakens'! Before Han Solo, there was a great carpenter named Harrison Ford. And here he is, with his crew, the day he finished building my recording studio back in 1970...Thank you Harrison...may the force be with you..." If you weren't already aware of the fact that Harrison was a regulation hottie back in the day, you definitely know now. Take a look above, then check out what the Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor recently revealed about the movie!

There's no denying that even at 73 years old, Harrison Ford remains a bona fide sex symbol, and a newly surfaced image provides even more evidence of his smoldering, younger days. Before Ford took on the iconic role of Han Solo in the Star Wars franchise, he worked full-time as a carpenter - a very sexy carpenter that is. Need proof? Just take a look at this throwback picture of the actor. Brazilian musician Sérgio Mendes has gifted the Internet with a vintage photo of a 28-year-old Ford on Facebook. You've probably heard the story of how, back in the '70s, Harrison Ford supported himself by working as a carpenter. And you've probably heard the other story, about how Ford was doing some work for Francis Ford Coppola when he happened to run into George Lucas, who asked him to run lines for a little sci-fi movie he was making. But there's one thing they didn't tell you about these stories: While all this was happening, Harrison Ford was super-hot. "Oh, I've seen Star Wars," you might say."I know how hot young Harrison Ford was." You do not. The true hotness of young Harrison Ford was only revealed on Facebook last week, when musician Sérgio Mendes revealed that Ford, among other feats of carpentry, built him a new recording studio back in 1970. To prove it, Mendes posted a photo of himself smiling alongside a tanned, shirtless, smirking, virile,...

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

Director Carlos Saldanha has been one of the principal creative forces at Blue Sky Studios since 1993. Saldanha was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and left his hometown in 1991 to follow his artistic instinct and passion for animation. With a background in computer science and a natural artistic sensibility, he found New York City the perfect locale to merge these skills and become an animator.
After the success of “Ice Age,” which got nominated for an Oscar in 2003, Saldanha took the directorial reins on “Ice Age: The Meltdown” (2006), the third computer-animated feature film from Twentieth Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios, which was the most profitable animated movie of the year. Next came the even more successful “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” which became one of biggest grossing animated films of all time, grossing over $887 million worldwide.

"Rio 2" is a perfect example of franchise maintenance in place of storytelling, and the nicest thing I can say about it is that my kids found it to be an agreeable way to spend part of an afternoon. I know I saw the first "Rio." My review of it was published in the days before we started putting letter grades on films in our reviews, but I would have given it a B or a B-. I liked the way they used Rio as a setting, I thought the performances were spirited and fun, and I really liked the soundtrack that was put together by Sergio Mendes. The sequel, which is practically the definition of "more of the same," is less successful in the way it uses the rain forest as a setting, and it features performances that feel far more phoned in while still featuring a non-stop dynamic...

Janelle Monae wants to take you to Rio on her new song and resistance is futile. “What Is Love,” which is featured in 20th Century Fox’s animated feature, “Rio 2,” came out today. The song combines Monae’s trademark irrepressibly bouncy, upbeat sound with a slight Brazilian rhythm and with lots of great percussion. It’s easy to see the birds of Rio bopping to the tune. It’s easy to see anyone bopping to it. It has the same kind of fun vibe as the Spice Girls' "Spice Up Your Life" crossed with Santa Esmeralda's version of "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood." Yep, I went there. In the song, Monae wonders what good is love if it’s not coming from the one she loves, but the song is as light as a feather, so even though she may be asking a deep question, the...

One of the bright spots this past film year was the success of Disney’s Frozen.
