The Netflix feature “My Father’s Dragon” is the latest release from Cartoon Saloon, the Irish studio whose traditional, hand-drawn animation has a positively magical effect on its audience. In the case of “My Father’s Dragon,” it had that effect on the people responsible for the film’s score as well.
“The thing about animation is it’s a fantastical, completely created world, so that really takes the guardrails off the music if you’re willing to go there and your director is willing to go there,” “My Father’s Dragon” composer Jeff Danna told IndieWire. His brother and co-composer Mychael Danna added, “Audiences are very sophisticated listeners, especially in live-action films. Everyone has a kind of line in their head where they feel manipulated by the musical score — in our era the line for live-action drama is very different from the line for animation, and I think in this kind of hand-drawn,...

This year, a handful of composers have the chance of being double nominated in the score category at the 2023 Oscars.
Composing duo and Nine Inch Nails band members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross could see two nominations this year, for United Artists’ Bones and All, directed by Luca Guadagnino, and Searchlight’s Empire of Light, from Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes. This won’t be the first time the pair landed two score noms: In 2020, they were recognized for Mank and the animated feature Soul (a collaboration with Jon Batiste), the latter winning in the category. It was their second win after they won in 2011 for The Social Network, their first collaboration on a film score.

Cartoon Saloon’s “My Father’s Dragon” (streaming on Netflix November 11), the whimsical 2D adaptation of Ruth Stiles Gannett’s classic children’s book, got some Oscar heat this week by winning the Special Jury prize at the Animation Is Film Festival. It’s quite a contrast to Irish director Nora Twomey’s Oscar-nominated directorial debut, “The Breadwinner,” based on Deborah Ellis’ popular YA novel about Afghan oppression.
But the mere suggestion that “My Father’s Dragon” is kid-friendlier registers a protest from the director. The tone might be gentler, but the themes of parenting and puberty are very complex, she insists.
“My Father’s Dragon” explores the rite of passage experienced by the restless Elmer (Jacob Tremblay), who runs away from his hard-working mother (Golshifteh Farahani) and their bleak existence in the noirish city of Nevergreen to the colorful but endangered Wild Island, where he bonds with a dragon...

Children’s literature loves few things as much as a mighty monster who remains, against all outward appearances, defiantly benign — one who sets out to soothe young nightmares after initially stoking them, ultimately proving that fears and anxieties aren’t limited to little folk. Boris, the cheerfully dorky title character in Ruth Stiles Gannett’s 1948 book “My Father’s Dragon,” is cut from the same soft felt as Frank L. Baum’s Cowardly Lion, Roald Dahl’s Big Friendly Giant or Jill Murphy’s Worst Witch. A would-be flying fire-breather who hasn’t yet found his wings or his flames, he has even more growing up to do than fearful 10-year-old hero Elmer, and their mutual guilelessness sets the tone for Irish animator Nora Twomey’s winningly sweet-natured, visually transporting adaptation.

“One of the ways my mother would keep me busy was put me in front of Julia,” recalls costume designer John Dunn about his early memories of watching Julia Child on television at a young age. The six-time Emmy nominee had fond memories of the “fascinating character” to draw on when be started work on the HBO Max series “Julia,” which in its first season focuses on how the iconic TV personality started her famous show “The French Chef.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Julia” is set in the early 1960s, a period Dunn describes as “near and dear” to him. The acclaimed designer is no stranger to period pieces, either, since he earned all six of those Emmy bids for his work on “Mad Men” and “Boardwalk Empire.” He notes that this show opened up for him “a new subculture” of “Cambridge, Boston, and the Wgbh environment,” though,...

“What does this iconic lady, who could be described so many ways, how is she described musically?,” wondered composer Jeff Danna when he started work on crafting the score for “Julia” on HBO Max. The new series centers on the legendary personality Julia Child as she pushes for and creates the first season of her television cooking show “The French Chef.” He describes the task of having to capture her bubbly and warm personality in song “the main challenge,” especially coming up with a tune that was “super memorable” and “malleable.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Set in the 1960s, “Julia” is a period piece that required Danna to hew closely to the sounds and music of the era. The four-time Emmy nominee says he strives to compose within “the general era,” but also feels “a certain sense of flexibility when there’s a period angle to a project.

Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive track from Jeff Danna’s score for Julia, which is set for release tomorrow via Watertower Music.
HBO Max’s eight episode comedy series is inspired by Julia Child’s (Sarah Lancashire) extraordinary life and her long-running television series, The French Chef, which pioneered the modern cooking show. Through Julia’s life and her singular joie de vivre, the series explores a pivotal time in American history—the emergence of public television as a new social institution, feminism and the women’s movement, the nature of celebrity and America’s cultural evolution. At its heart, the show is a portrait of a loving marriage with a shifting power dynamic.
One of Danna’s main challenges in his work here was to develop a theme that could speak to both the culinary icon’s spirit, and the series’ “brilliant and warm showcase” of her early years on television.

Honors were given out in more than 30 categories at Wednesday’s 12th annual Hollywood Music in Media Awards, with singer-songwriters like Billie Eilish, H.E.R., Adam Levine and Rufus Wainwright being celebrated in the live webcast as well as composers including Hans Zimmer, Rachel Portman, Alberto Iglesias and Nicholas Britell.
The HMMAs reward songwriters, composers and even performers in fields that include not just film and TV work but everything from video games to commercials to theme park music.
Film nominations are given in multiple genres, which allows for a series of short lists that members of the Academy’s music branch may end up studying as they vote for the Oscars’ much, much shorter lists.
Best score for a feature film went to Britell for his work on Adam McKay’s satirical “Don’t Look Up.” Other score prizes went to Zimmer for “Dune” (sci-fi/fantasy film), Beltrami for “A Quiet Place II...

Best original song Oscar contenders Beyoncé and Van Morrison are among those who received nominations in the visual media categories at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards (Hmma). Composers Hans Zimmer and Nicholas Britell were included among the familiar names picking up nods in the score categories.
The awards will be presented Nov. 17. The HMMAs honor composers, songwriters, and music supervisors for their work in music for film, television, and videogames.
Nominations here have historically been a harbinger or guide for what nominees and winners will pop up in the Golden Globes, Oscars, Grammys and Emmys that occur later in awards season, although there is a much wider field in the HMMAs, since there are separate divisions for sci-fi, animation, documentary and independent films in the score categories. A central theme in Tom McCarthy’s film “Stillwater,” reaching theaters this weekend, is that of culture clash: Oklahoman Bill Baker (Matt Damon) in southern France, visiting his imprisoned daughter (Abigail Breslin) and becoming involved with a French theater actress (Camille Cottin).
That idea extended to the music, composed by Oscar winner Mychael Danna (“Life of Pi”). Danna, whose specialty has long been the authentic application of world-music sounds into film scores, was an obvious choice “because it takes place in Marseille, which is a kind of multi-cultural melting pot,” he says.
The challenge, however, was McCarthy’s direction that the music be “not too specific, culturally, but just the right amount of flavor — something you don’t notice, you just feel.” The intention, Danna says, was for the viewer to experience Marseille and its people “through Bill’s eyes.”
Baker’s middle-American roots suggested country flavors, so Danna assembled...

Pixar released two films last year, “Soul” and “Onward.” Funnily enough, the two are a bit like the brothers from the latter film, if “Soul” is the overachiever and “Onward” is the underappreciated underdog. According to our odds, both films will likely get nominated in the Best Animated Film category, but “Soul” has consistently ranked higher than “Onward.” However, the fantasy adventure has something that “Soul” doesn’t have: a Grammy-nominated song to compete in the Best Song category.

“Onward” follows two mismatched brothers in a modern fantasy kingdom as they embark on a quest to reunite with their dead father. Its submitted song is Brandi Carlile’s “Carried Me With You,” a country ballad that mirrors the story’s theme of brotherly love and support. The film delivers a classic Pixar emotional gut punch in its climax, and the song,...

When brothers Mychael and Jeff Danna were approached by director Dan Scanlon to compose the music for Pixar’s Onward — which follows teenage elf brothers Barley (Chris Pratt) and Ian (Tom Holland), who embark on a mystical quest to reunite with their late father — the duo immediately felt as if fate had brought the project their way.
The two composers didn’t know anything about the project before their meeting with Scanlon and the Onward team. “As [Dan Scanlon is] pitching this story, the hairs on the back of our necks are just going up,” Mychael tells THR. “...

Not just one of the best animated films of the year, Pixar’s “Onward” sits as one of the best animated films, period. Beautifully inventive and narratively rich, “Onward” stands as one of the awards season’s most underrated gems, especially with its story.
One of the last films to be seen in theaters before the Covid-19 pandemic, the film has been in the thick of the awards race for best animated feature. As Pixar always does, the film is much more than its visuals. The movie features wonderful voice performances from its cast, including Tom Holland, Chris Pratt and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Mychael and Jeff Danna’s inventive score and a wonderful original number “Carried Me With You,” written by Brandi Carlile and Phil and Tim Hanseroth. Dan Scanlon, Jason Headley and Keith Bunin’s screenplay hits all the emotional chords, especially in the film’s big finale.

If there’s one thing you can bank on when it comes to Pixar, it’s emotion. No matter the story that they’re telling, the animation experts will seek to bring you to tears. It’s one of the reasons why they’ve become the industry leader in making films that, while aimed at kids on the surface, are really speaking to adults. Onward, opening this week, is just the latest example of that. Children will see a romp with creative designs, while grown ups will be wrecked by the emotional message at its core. It’s another one of Pixar’s top notch efforts, starting off the year with a definite Best Animated Feature contender. The film is an animated adventure, steeped in fantasy and magic. Long ago, the world was filled with magic, but as modern technology came into play, that was cast aside for convenience. We...

Just a few days after the trophy for best original song was given out at the Oscars comes news of the first significant new original song of this movie year. Chasing the ever-lucrative, ever-changing market for children’s entertainment has always been a struggle, and nowhere are the challenges more acute than in music.
Variety’s Music for Screens summit will bring together execs from Disney Channel, DreamWorks Animation and eOne, along with songwriters Antonina Armato and Kay Hanley, for a panel moderated by Bmi’s VP of Creative Relations Doreen Ringer Ross to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing music in family entertainment.
One of the year’s most unexpected success stories in the kids’ music space came via the popular “Peppa Pig” (pictured). The first album from the long-running British preschool show got a surprise boost in publicity when rapper Iggy Azalea turned her competing release date into a pretend chart feud with Peppa on Twitter, which gave birth to all manner of memes.

Equally adept at original content and sequels, Pixar is truly the major force in animation these days. A powerhouse with Academy Awards and billions of dollars at the box office to their credit, they largely can do no wrong. This month, they’ll put out one of their highest profile sequels ever in Toy Story 4, but after that, the studio has said they’re doubling down on original ideas. Well, they’ve released a Teaser Trailer for one of those, next year’s epic from them, Onward. Will Pixar have another hit on their hands? You can see the Teaser for the film at the end of the post, but spoiler alert: they will. The movie is Pixar’s 2020 animated effort, centering on a fantastical world. The official plot synopsis from IMDb is as follows: “Set in a suburban fantasy world, two teenage elf brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot,...

The six scores vying for this year’s Emmy for music composition for a limited series, movie or special range from 19th-century tales of Canada and the Old West to futuristic stories of androids and virtual reality. There’s even a documentary about emperor penguins.
Alias Grace
For this six-part Netflix drama based on a Margaret Atwood novel about a possible murderess in 1859 Canada, composers Mychael Danna and Jeff Danna wanted to “honor the time but put our own spin on it,” says Jeff. “We thought it needed a postmodern chamber sound”: just 12 strings, three woodwinds, harp and piano.
Oscar winner Mychael (“Life of Pi”), who has known writer-producer Sarah Polley for more than 20 years, adds: “We did write in period style, but with elements of minimalism and even trance music, using instruments that the characters in the story would have been familiar and comfortable with.”

With the score for “Alias Grace” composer Mychael Danna wanted to “honor the period” in which the story takes place, while at the same time putting a “postmodernist shade” on it. He shared musical duties with his brother Jeff Danna on this Netflix adaptation of Margaret Atwood‘s novel, which has brought the duo an Emmy nomination for Best Movie/Mini Score. Watch our exclusive video interview with the Dannas above.

Every year, the Emmy nominations that inevitably earn the most interest are the leading actor and actress categories and the top prizes of comedy and drama series. Every year, it’s a shame that so much attention is paid to so few people overall, given that there are dozens of categories honoring so many different kinds of expertise. From writing to directing, costuming to casting, editing to title design, the Emmys honor an incredible breadth of creative work in the entertainment industry that deserves more recognition than even their nominations tend to get.
Take the writing categories: Though the Emmys often gets stuck in a pattern of nominating the same shows year in and year out, there are usually at least a few new and deserving writers that find a way in. This year, the drama writing category is almost identical to 2017’s with the exception of Phoebe Waller-Bridge landing...

This year’s Emmy race in the music categories takes on greater interest because a win in the song category could instantly give songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul an Egot, having already won Oscar, Tony and Grammy awards.
Pasek and Paul — whose “La La Land,” “Greatest Showman” and “Dear Evan Hansen” songs have catapulted them into the front ranks of American songwriters in the past two years — are nominated for their new song, “In the Market for a Miracle,” written for Fox’s “A Christmas Story Live,” an adaptation of their 2012 stage musical.

In case you didn’t notice last week, a number of categories had their ranks thinned out by the Academy. Well, in that regard, I’m here to help. Yes, AMPAS thinned the herd in Best Original Score, Best Original Song, and Best Foreign Language Feature. They also managed to include a handful of snubs, as always is the case. Those will be listed in just a moment, but definitely study these lists, as there are Oscar hints to be found within. For now though, these are just the remaining titles fighting it out for nominations. Take a look and be sure to see how it all impacts predictions going forward. Below you will see the 145 films in Original Score that are still eligible, the 91 tunes in Original Song, and the nine in Foreign Language Feature that remain in play. There were no real Song snubs, but notably Score has eliminated presumed nominee Arrival,...

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk had its world debut on October 14 at the New York Film Festival and the early reviews are, to put it simply, a little all over the place. While Ang Lee’s latest work is, as intended, a visual spectacle — to its own detriment, some critics note — it seems as though the story isn’t being mentioned all that often and, when it is, there’s not much praise to dole out.
Jean-Christophe Castelli wrote the screenplay, which is based on the 2012 novel of the same name by author Ben Fountain, for the movie about a young soldier named Billy Lynn who returns home from Iraq in 2004. Both works, which are anti-war yet pro-military, focus on the 19-year-old as well as the surviving squad members with flashbacks to the battlefield action coupled...

The first, Inside Out, was a critically adorned coming-of-age tale that was as wonderful as it was original; The Good Dinosaur is the second, which is coming in hot as a fellow new IP.
Taking place in the land before time if you will, Pixar’s brain trust has dreamed up a world largely devoid of humans. Under strict anti-piracy measures, which included sealed bags and lock-downs on all electronic equipment, Pixar’s story editor Kelsey Mann presented 30 minutes of exclusive footage and sketched images from the highly anticipated The Good Dinosaur at Rome Film Festival.
The giddy animation stalwart iterated to the packed house that several of the scenes had just been completed, with many of his colleagues still yet to see the new material.
Shown in the same narrative arc of the film - Mann introduced scenes and initial storyboard sketches with lead character Arlo (aptly a young apostaurus), along with his parents and two siblings.
Additional scenes showed the tragic circumstance that tears him away from his family, as well as the strange, vast landscape he is forced to travel on his own, where he meets characters including a spiritual stegosaurus, a quirky family of tyrannosaurus rexes and a young boy/ dog named Spot.
