2010: Moby Dick
Stars: Barry Bostwick, Renée OConnor, Matt Lagan | Written by Paul Bales | Directed by Trey Stokes
The imaginatively named 2010: Moby Dick is yet another outing from low-budget production company The Asylum – well-known to SyFy viewers for their cult vein of ridiculously-gigantic-monster movies of the Megashark and Crocosaurus variety, and anyone who’s wandered into Blockbusters and wondered why anyone would make a rip-off Transformers movie, and call it Transmorphers - and if you understand what that pedigree means, you’ll know to avoid it like the plague.
A relatively new concept for the company, Moby Dick is an adaptation of Herman Melville’s classic novel rather than a rehash of blockbusters produced seemingly scant minutes after the originals are released. The action, as you may glean from the title, is moved to the present day, but with most of the original characters (and the vessel, now a submarine,...

Director: Trey Stokes. Review: Adam Wing. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the video store, The Asylum is back, and it’s bringing with it a Dick called Moby. The masters of the ‘mockbuster’ show no sign of letting up, but lets not give them too much credit. From the studio that gave us Transmorphers, Mega Piranha and Titanic II, comes a modern day reworking of a literary classic. Herman Melville must be spinning in his grave right about now. Moby Dick follows the adventures of the crazed Captain Ahab (Barry Bostwick) on his bloodthirsty mission for vengeance. Equipped with the most high-tech weaponry known to man, nothing will get in his way as he battles against nature, society and his own inner demons on a collision course with the deadliest beast the oceans have ever known. Batten down the hatches and hold on for...

Any doubts that I had about The Asylum's 2010: Moby Dick were put to a sublime rest in the moment that Captain Ahab fashioned a peg leg out of a wooden cross, marking some dead person's grave. Or maybe it was when Moby Dick, the giant prehistoric whale cut a cruise ship in half. Or Maybe it was when Moby Dick flopped its way onto a Hawaiian Island, walked around and then jumped over the entire island, plunging itself back into the water. I guess it's safe to say that 2010: Moby Dick is pretty remarkable.
If one were to picture what a modern day adaption of Herman Melville's Moby Dick would look like, I'm not sure anything that vaguely resembles The Asylum's take on it would come to surface. It's safe to assume that the...

*Full disclosure: The Asylum provided a DVD copy of the film for review.
Director: Trey Stokes.
Writers: Paul Bales, and Herman Melville.
Moby Dick gets a remake in The Asylum's November 23rd release entitled 2010: Moby Dick. The picture dumbs down Herman Melville's original 19th Century written work and themes of good vs. evil, or social class are long forgotten. Instead, the predominant theme of revenge is one which only mildly satisfies. Even Barry Bostwick's melodramatic acting as Captain Ahab cannot save this sinking sub, which is cheaply made and dramatically written.
In case you have not read the original, Captain Ahab is wounded by a large mythical white whale, who now has an appetite for skimpily bikini clad women and stationary oil rigs (modern version). Ahab makes it his life's mission to save the Us Navy from the rampagings of this 500 foot beast, to no avail.

The Asylum generally tackle recent releases with their line in mockbusters but here they have decided to adapt classic literature with a modernised take on Moby Dick. Although the 2010 in the title might suggest a reference to the update to present day The Asylum have freely admitted that this actually has more to do with gaming the VOD system.
2010: Moby Dick begins with Ahab’s (Barry Bostwick) first encounter with the five-six hundred foot whale in 1969. Taking down the submarine that Ahab is serving on the whale tears it in two, ripping off Ahab’s leg in the process. Flash forward to 2010 and Ahab is the captain of a state of the art submarine and intent on exacting vengeance on the whale that took his leg. In order to track it down he enlists the help of scientist and whale call expert Michelle (Renee O’Connor). Michelle’s character...

The shopping season starts early if you have a gamer who is also a horror fan on your chopping list. On Tuesday, Namco will release the much anticipated Splatterhouse on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles. If you have been following Uncle Creepy on Twitter, you've heard him gush about this game. According to him ... there are lots of things gushing in this title.
If you're not much of a gamer, there aren't many horror goodies to get excited about this week. Unless you're down for an Asylum created CGI whale competing with your turkey (pun intended), along with a couple of other creatures. Rounding up the list is a British import and a cool looking indie offering that looks to make you shed some plasma.

The motto at The Asylum seems to be: go big or go home. This movie production company specializes in enlarging benign ocean creatures and turning the sea into a battlefield. The latest animal to get super-sized is the whale in The Asylum's 2010: Moby Dick. This is a "modern adaptation of the classic novel" (Asylum) and this literature buff wonders what author Herman Melville would think of this update.
Happy or not, 2010: Moby Dick will go straight-to-dvd and Captain Ahab will be played by Barry Bostwick ("Ghost Whisperer"). Also starring is Renee O'Connor (Bitchslap) and this film releases November 23rd. Have a look at the trailer, as giant mammals go tow to tow with smaller, but smarter animals (humans).
This short overview is courtesy of The Asylum:

Amidst all the trailers and teasing that sci-fi fans endure this weekend at Comic-Con, it’s nice to see a little present waiting for them when they hit their laptops this evening. Ark debuted this weekend on Hulu, all at once, in its full nine-episode glory. Right from its unassuming opening, we find female hero Connie (Xena’s Renée O’Connor) whisked away from her couch to some mysterious spaceship biodome—and Ark perhaps? Soon we meet another confused captive (Adam Cardon) who seems to be from another time all together. The two explore their oddly vacant ship—an impressive combination of CGI and constructed set. Yes, this is the same Ark from director Trey Stokes that 60Frames was shopping back in early 2009. Ark was originally created by Robbie Thompson as a graphic novel series that would release on Oni Press, with the web series developed by producers Gabe Sachs...

Trey Stokes of Pink Five fame has released a teaser trailer of his most recent project, a science fiction thriller web series called Ark: The Series, produced by Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah of 90210 notoriety. Ark: The Series began life as part of a collaboration between digital media company 60Frames and independent graphic novel publisher Oni Press. If you have already fallen in love with the Alien-esque aesthetics, you're in luck - Ark is supposed to release simultaneously as a comic book and a web series, each dealing with different stories in the Ark universe. All we know about Ark: The Series is that it stars Renee O'Connor (Gabrielle from Xena: Warrior Princess), Adam Cardon and Marjo-Riikka Makela, and that it starts with a woman named Connie being waking up in a pod on a spaceship instead of her bed like she expected. Other than that, details...
