Reef Break, the crime drama headlined by former Unforgettable and Without a Trace star Poppy Montgomery, which had a 13-episode run on ABC this past summer, will not be returning to the network.
The cancelation of the series, produced by ABC Studios International, comes on the heels of Disney Television Studios’ move to reevaluate its overseas strategy which included the shutdown of the UK-based ABC Studios International led by Keli Lee.
ABC Studios is not expected to shop Reef Break elsewhere. The series had been originally ordered by France’s M6, with ABC joining as Us distributor.
Montgomery executive produced Reef Break, which was based on her idea, along with Ken Sanzel, who was the writer/showrunner.

“Reef Break” will not be back for a second season at ABC.
The series debuted back in June on the broadcaster and aired 13 episodes, with the finale airing on Sept. 13. It starred Poppy Montgomery as Cat Chambers, Ray Stevenson as Jake Elliot, Desmond Chiam as Wyatt Cole, Melissa Bonne as Ana Dumont and Tamala Shelton as Petra.
It focused on Chambers, a thief-turned-fixer for the governor of a stunning and seductive Pacific Island paradise. Impulsive, reckless and irresistible, Cat’s less-than-perfect past gives her an instinctive gift for understanding crime and criminals.
“Reef Break” was created by Ken Sanzel. Mark Rosner, Montgomery, Steve Pearlman, and Ruthanne Secunda served as executive producers on the series. It was produced by ABC Studios and ABC Studios International in partnership with M6.
The show failed to find a significant audience or critical acclaim with its release. In his review for Variety, Daniel D’Addario wrote:...

A couple of months ago it was revealed that Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren were teaming up for a new action series. Well, that series is called The International and CBS has ordered a pilot episode.
Stallone is set to produce and direct the hour-long drama and Lundgren will star in it. He will play Anders Soto, described as “a one-man covert black-ops team working for the U.N., who is called in to find asymmetrical solutions to the world’s most delicate and complex problems. He is part negotiator and part international spy.”
The series is being written by Ken Sanzel and it sounds like it could be a solid show. It’s always good to see Stallone and Lundgren work together.
This will be the first TV series that Stallone will have directed in his career. Hopefully, it turns out good!

Disney is clearly very serious about their commitment to diversity onscreen. Recently, their own ABC channel was the only one of the four major networks to reject the opportunity to hear a pitch about an upcoming action drama series from Dolph Lundgren and Sylvester Stallone. Executives reportedly passed on the show because it’s not “female-focused.”
Apparently, both ABC and its parent company are renewing their focus on stories centered around women. Fans have already heard this push from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, as well as seen it with some of their recent casting and character choices. It’s also been evident in the Star Wars franchise over the past few years, as Daisy Ridley has been at the forefront of the Sequel Trilogy.

The Expendables and Rocky co-stars Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren are reuniting for a new action drama series! The series doesn’t have a title, but it will be an hourlong series that is a hot commodity.
The series is being written by Ken Sanzel, and Lundgren will play a “covert operative at the Department of Safety and Security at the Un. He is described as the Un’s secret special agent, a one-man S.W.A.T. team and hostage negotiator.”
Sanzel will also serve as showrunner on the series, and Stallone will executive produce and possibly direct it. He will not star in the series, but it’s still great that these two action movie legends will be working together again.

CBS has ordered action pilot The International, starring Dolph Lundgren and produced by Sylvester Stallone.
Dolph Lundgren has been putting in a lot of work with onscreen Rocky IV rival Sylvester Stallone ever since their reunion in 2010’s The Expendables, which yielded sequels and substantially improved opportunities. Indeed, this imminently-ending decade has seen a proper comeback for the ‘80s action icon; a comeback that will shift to the small screen as the star of a TV project, with Stallone involved.
The International is the newly-revealed title of said TV project, which – in the latest development – has procured an order by CBS. The move is the culmination of some solicitation after the hourlong action pilot, with Lundgren set as its star, was shopped around back in August by Tony Krantz’s Flame Ventures, reported Deadline.

American Alex Zakrzewski, whose credits include Blue Bloods, Bosch, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and CSI: NY, was the set-up director on the series commissioned by Disney’s ABC network, which stars Sydney-born Poppy Montgomery.
Shawn Seet, Kieran Darcy-Smith and Sian Davies are each directing one episode while Peter Andrikidis, Grant Brown and Fiona Banks will each do two.
All are benefiting from a ground-breaking deal which the Australian Directors Guild signed with the producers, ABC Studios and ABC Studios International.

Former ICM Partners agent-turned-producer Ruthanne Secunda has signed a two-year overall deal with ABC Studios, Variety has learned exclusively.
ABC Studios International’s 13-episode summer series “Reef Break” marks her first project, which began production in Queensland, Australia, last week. Secunda developed the show while she was still at ICM with longtime client Poppy Montgomery, star of “Unforgettable” and “Without a Trace.”
Montgomery, who first came up with the idea for “Reef Break,” will star in the series. Secunda, Montgomery, and showrunner Mark Rosner will executive produce. Ken Sanzel was previously listed as showrunner on the series.
“We’re thrilled to bring Ruthanne into the ABC Studios family,” said ABC Studios president Patrick Moran. “We’ve worked with her for years as an agent, and marveled at her skills at packaging series and bringing projects to fruition. We’re thrilled to have someone with her taste and great relationships with talent in house.

The Australian Directors Guild has clinched a ground-breaking deal with production arms of the Walt Disney Co. for four Aussie directors who will work on crime drama Reef Break, set to shoot in Queensland.
It is the first agreement between the guild and an offshore production company and Adg CEO Kingston Anderson hopes it will serve as a template for all foreign TV shows shooting in Australia.
The deal applies to the four Aussies who will work with a Us set-up director on the 13-episode series, all yet to be revealed.
“We know what the Us rates are for directors and Australian directors were getting a lot less,” Anderson tells If. “We have negotiated a much better deal covering basic pay and conditions, and directors can still negotiate individual agreements. This will help us keep directors in Australia.

Cancun, Mexico — Parox, one of Chile’s most internationally-minded TV production houses, is set to produce 10-part “Silver Bridge” (Puente de Plata), a 1950s-set, true-events-inspired drama series tracing the cocaine trade’s origins back to the Huasaffs, a Chilean mob clan.
Billed as a feminist action-melodrama come narco series, “Silver Bridge” is produced by Parox’s Leonora Gonzalez, Alvaro Cabello and Sergio Gándara. The series is currently being written by Enrique Videla, co-scribe of Pablo Larrain’s HBO series “Fugitives” (“Prófugos”) and “Ventana,” the feature -debut of emerging Chilean auteur Rodrigo Susarte.
“Silver Bridge” has tapped development finance from Chile’s Corfu, part of its Ministry of Economy. Gándara and Gonzalez introduced the project to potential co-production partners and global platform execs at this year’s MipCancun market.

Legendary Entertainment’s Godzilla vs. Kong and ABC Studios International’s 13-part series Reef Break will be shot on the Gold Coast, secured by the Federal Government’s Location Incentive Program.
The government has spent $16 million from the $140 million program, first announced ahead of the Federal Budget, in order to attract the two productions.
Both projects will kick off before the end of the year, and together are estimated to generate $100 million and employ 1,300 people. The productions follow on from Dora the Explorer, which is currently shooting at Village Roadshow Studios.
The Location Incentive Program – a grant that will be delivered over four years from 2019-2020 – is effectively a top-up for the 16.5 per cent Location Offset, which is widely regarded by industry as uncompetitive when compared to rebates in other territories designed to attract footloose production.

Reef Break, Blue Bloods and Numbers alum Ken Sanzel wrote and directed the pic, which has just wrapped production in Columbia and will be on offer later this month at the American Film Market.
The pic opens with a hotel room shootout between two assassins, kicking off a long night where bodies fall like dominoes as we follow a chain of crooked cops, gangsters, hitmen, a femme fatale and an ex-mercenary through a relay of murder, betrayal, and revenge.
Enrico Colantoni and Alimi Ballard co-star.
CineTel’s Lisa Hansen and Paul Hertzberg produced with Gary Preisler. Eric Brenner, Cage, and Millennium’s Avi Lerner, Boaz Davidson, Jeffrey Greenstein and Jonathan Yunger are exec producers.

Nicolas Cage didn’t walk the red carpet at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, but his name was everywhere. At the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar, the actor’s wild-eyed performance in the revenge saga “Mandy” reminded cinephiles that while his penchant for overacting can border on parody, he’s a true creature of cinema. Sundance audiences embraced it as a genre experiment; the Cannes reception took it global. “For years, Nicolas Cage’s more extreme performances have been derided as a blight on cinema,” wrote Robbie Collins in The Telegraph, “but it turns out that cinema just had to catch up.”
Directors’ Fortnight, where Cage won similar approval two years ago as the self-absorbed criminal with a Humphrey Bogart obsession in Paul Schrader’s “Dog Eat Dog,” proved to be only one of several ways for the Cage brand to remain current at the world’s most prominent film gathering. Blunt Force Trauma follows the journey of John (Kwanten) and Colt (Pinto), gunfighters and sometimes lovers, on parallel but very different journeys through an underground dueling culture. From cockfighting rings and train yards, to basements and barns across South America, modern-day warriors put on bulletproof vests and duel one another in underground gunfights to gain riches and respect. It’s known only as the Game, and Zorringer (Rourke) is its elusive champion. John is looking for the ultimate duel with Zorringer while Colt is seeking revenge for the death of her brother. The two gunslingers travel from one shootout to another on a dangerous journey of love, violence, and clandestine battles.

"This one feels different." The official UK trailer has debuted for a new film called Blunt Force Trauma, starring Mickey Rourke, Ryan Kwanten and Freida Pinto. Despite that rather interesting cast, this is actually going straight-to-dvd and looks a bit like a low budget clunker with some very underlit scenes. The film is about gunfighters, or modern day gun-slingers who actually fight with pistols and bulletproof vests. You know what, that is a cool idea I'll give them that, but this has other problems. Anyway, the cast includes Jon Mack, Jason Gibson, Carolina Gómez and Maruia Shelton. Check it out below if you're curious. Watch: First Trailer For 'Blunt Force Trauma' Starring Mickey Rourke, Freida Pinto, And Ryan Kwanten
Sometimes, we can't explain why movies get made. Maybe there's a tax credit that needs to used, to a production company that has some cash lying around that needs to be written off. Either way, something compelled Mickey Rourke, Frieda Pinto, and Ryan Kwanten to make a movie called "Blunt Force Trauma," and now the trailer is here. Looking every bit as straight-to-dvd as the release will probably get, the movie from Ken Sanzel (whose most notable credit is some episodes of "Numb3rs"), the movie follows a couple of dudes who swing their....guns....in some kind of underground fight club that involves shooting people. But then Johnny Law comes knocking, and ethical dilemmas start to surface, and whatnot. Here's the synopsis: Following the journey of John and Colt, gunfighters and sometimes lovers, on parallel but very different journeys through an underground dueling culture. No word yet on release dates,...

Saying that NBC's Ironside is merely a remake of the popular series that starred Raymond Burr as a wheelchair-bound detective is selling the drama way short.
Part crime procedural, part character drama, the 21st century Ironside is anything but static - and this Detective Ironside is fighting demons, taking down bad guys and finding time for the ladies. Of course, it also helps that the character is played by Blair Underwood, who we've loved in dramas like La Law and The Event, along with comedies such as Sex and the City and The New Adventures of Old Christine. The series also stars Pablo Schreiber, Neal Bledsoe, Spencer Grammer, Kenneth Choi and Brent Sexton.
I sat down with Underwood recently to talk over the role and how his Broadway gig helped him land back on TV in this role.

NBC's remake/redo of the 1960s-'70s cop show "Ironside" is a crime drama, but according to the people making it, it's not a procedural.
So what's the difference? Executive producer Ken Sanzel explains Saturday (July 27) at the TCA summer press tour.
"Procedurals are about process and kind of inevitably go to catching a bad guy at the end of the episode, says Sanzel, who previously worked as a writer and producer on "Blue Bloods" and "Numb3rs." "We'll catch plenty of bad guys, but as you see in the pilot, this is a man who -- because of who he was before, because of who he is now -- is driven to answer deeper questions about tragedy, having been steeped in some of his own."
"Ironside" stars Blair Underwood as a New York detective who was shot in the line of duty two years earlier and now is in a wheelchair.

But they also raised a slew of new questions, mainly related to the pilots that have not been picked up yet. (There may not be other new series orders today Btw.) The biggest hole on NBC’s initial list of five new series — comedies Sean Saves The World, About A Boy and Family Guide and dramas Crisis and Believe, is what is believed to be NBC’s top pilot this season, drama Blacklist. Lately, there seems to be no easier shortcut to a TV series than taking a classic novel, character or tale and giving it a contemporary twist -- plus bonus points if the source material is in the public domain. "Revenge," ABC's Hamptons-set update of "The Count of Monte Cristo," is now in its second season, while CBS and PBS have dueling contemporary takes on Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective in "Elementary" and "Sherlock." Ken Sanzel is having a busy first development season at Universal TV, which he signed an overall deal in April. Sanzel has sold two drama projects to NBC, which he is writing and executive producing. Hood reimagines Robin Hood as an Iraq War veteran-turned-outlaw in an Upstate NY county besieged by rapacious bankers and a corrupt, privatized police department. Gen Mishima is based on a Chilean format created by Sergio Aguero, who will executive produce the NBC adaptation with Sanzel. It centers on a journalist and a FBI agent who investigate an underground culture of a group of brilliant kids who were part of an experimental school training the next generation of leaders which burned down years ago. Former New York City cop Sanzel moved to Universal TV after a long tenure at CBS TV Studios where he most recently serves as executive producer/showrunner on the CBS drama NYC22. Before that,...
