Key to the ongoing conversations about Latino representation in the U.S. entertainment industry is the need for the diversification of stories, which in turn would breed valuable specificity. Rather than expecting one production to speak strongly to every single subset of the vast Latino community, projects should reflect the unique microcosms and experiences that speak to groups such as Cuban Americans in Florida, Mexican Americans in Los Angeles, or Dominican Americans in New York City.
Enter the multi-hyphenate Rudy Mancuso, whose charmingly inventive and loosely autobiographical feature directorial debut “Música” highlights the Brazilian American community of New Jersey’s Ironbound neighborhood. In addition to starring in the film as a fictionalized version of his younger self, the talented Mancuso — who started out making videos on the now-defunct app Vine before moving on to YouTube and live shows — co-wrote the screenplay with Dan Lagana and, fittingly, also created the integral music.

Before Rudy Mancuso wrote, directed, starred in and composed the music for his stylish debut feature, Música, he made exuberant short-form videos for Vine (R.I.P). In those six-second clips, many of which are compiled on YouTube, the artist experiments with slapstick comedy, an energetic editing style and bouncy compositions that channel how he sees the world. Mancuso has synesthesia, a perceptual condition in which any one kind of sensory stimulation can spark spontaneous reactions in another. Where others see a square, Mancuso might also hear a B note; the letter A will always be terracotta to him, and so on.
In Música, the artist mines his personal life and singular experience of the world to craft a charming coming-of-age story. The film, which premiered at SXSW and is streaming on Prime Video, follows Rudy (Mancuso) six weeks before his college graduation, when the young Newark native must confront...

Who are those eternal dream girls of summer? Now in 4K . . . Sofia Coppola’s first feature is a head-swirling poetic essay about adolescent angst and tragic self-annihilation. Some families are balanced, others are dysfunctional and some are just plain toxic. Ms. Coppola sticks close to the source book, looking for visuals to express author Jeffrey Eugenides’ solution-challenged mystery, narrated by a composite group of teenaged boys.

Sofia Coppola’s first feature film is a head-swirling poetic essay about adolescent angst and terminal self-destruction in suburbia, where some families are unbalanced, others are dysfunctional and some are just plain toxic. Coppola sticks close to the source book, looking for visuals to express author Jeffrey Eugenides’ solution-challenged mystery, narrated by a composite group of teenaged boys.

Director Sanaa Hamri’s path to filmmaking was not an obvious one. Born in Morocco, Hamri moved to the United States to study theater at the age of 17. But instead of acting, she got into editing and was soon enough directing music videos for such stars as Mariah Carey. Her third feature, Just Wright, stars Queen Latifah as a physical therapist who falls for an NBA star, played by Common. It is an uncommon love story of a man who falls for the right girl after falling for the wrong girl. Hamri’s visual style is rich and textured—full of the colorful flourishes of her native Morocco. Although she lives in the United States, she has a home in Morocco. She hopes her next project will be an adaptation of Leila Lalami’s short stories, Hope and other Dangerous Pursuits.
