Comic-Con is coming to the high seas.
San Diego Comic Convention, the parent company of the international comic convention, and Entertainment Cruise Productions — which has previously produced a Star Trek cruise experience — are teaming to launch Comic-Con: The Cruise. The full-ship charter will take fans from Tampa to the Mexican island Cozumel onboard Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas, with its first voyage set for Feb. 5-9, 2025.
“With a stellar reputation for producing fan events on the ocean, we are excited that Entertainment Cruise Productions has developed Comic-Con: The Cruise to be a truly new kind of adventure,” said David Glanzer, a spokesperson for the popular convention, in a statement. “The team at Ecp shares our passion for transformational events and innovative programming and we are excited they are building something so amazing.”

When San Diego Comic-Con launched in 1970, it was a niche convention for about 300 fans. In the decades that have followed, it has, of course, become a mandatory stop for the biggest franchises in Hollywood, from the universes of Marvel and DC to Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings. But after years of movies and TV (and top actors) taking center stage and propelling the event to new heights, 2023 will be the least star-packed Comic-Con in more than a decade.
This week, SAG-AFTRA announced that actors will be joining the writers guild on picket lines, as Hollywood faces yet another shutdown amid a historic double strike. Already, most Hollywood majors, including Disney, Warner Bros., Sony, Universal, Netflix and HBO, chose to sit out Comic-Con this year, due to prior strike uncertainty and financial stress on studio travel budgets.

The event schedule for San Diego Comic-Con 2023 is looking grim. After reports that Marvel is skipping its Hall H presentation at the nerdiest entertainment event of the year, we’re hearing about more cancelations for the annual celebration. According to reports, Marvel, Sony, HBO, Universal, and Netflix will skip Sdcc in 2023.
The likely reason for the cancelations stems from the ongoing strikes across the film and television industry. SAG-astra and the AMPTP have until June 30 to come to agreeable terms. If the deadline expires, actors could join writers and showrunners in refusing to participate in hype-powered events like San Diego Comic-Con. With multiple studios sitting out this year’s Sdcc, what the organization plans to fill Hall H with is anyone’s guess.
Due to Marvel’s cancelation, attendees of the con won’t be able to enjoy previews of upcoming content from the monolith company, including details about The Marvels,...

Can San Diego Comic-Con catch a break?
For two years, the biggest annual fan convention in North America was forced to cancel the five-day gathering due to the Covid-19 pandemic — placing Comic-Con International, the non-profit organization that runs Sdcc, under unprecedented financial strain. Last year, Sdcc came roaring back with a masked-and-vaccinated convention that was a robust success, with blockbuster Hall H panels for the “Star Trek” TV universe, “House of the Dragon,” “The Walking Dead” and, especially, Marvel Studios.
This year’s Comic-Con — which is scheduled to start July 19, less than a month away — is increasingly likely to have none of those panels.
At least, that’s what studios across the industry are anticipating. If SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP cannot come to terms by the June 30 contract deadline and the guild goes on strike, actors will almost certainly join writers and showrunners in sitting out promotional events like Comic-Con,...

After two virtual ComicCon@Home conventions and one mini “special edition” event last Thanksgiving, San Diego Comic-Con is finally returning for its first full-on, in-person con in three years. The team behind the biggest fan convention in North America says it’s “burning the midnight oil” to get ready for Comic-Con, which begins with its traditional “preview night” at the San Diego Convention Center on Wednesday and runs through Sunday.
On Friday, Amazon Prime Video will continue its year-long marketing effort with a panel for its upcoming fantasy epic series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” Not to be outdone, on Saturday, HBO will debut its first look at the “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon.” Paramount+ will have a panel for three of its “Star Trek” series: “Strange New Worlds,” “Lower Decks,” and “Picard.” And to cap off things late Saturday afternoon, Marvel Studios...

San Diego Comic-Con kicks off its first in-person, full-sized event in over two years next Thursday with more than 130,000 people expected to attend. The first Comic-Con since the pandemic, with the exception of the mini special edition held last Thanksgiving weekend, will see the over 50-year-old event hit its highest-ever number of attendees wearing masks because, cosplaying or not, they will all be required to don one to get in.
“The main thing we discussed with everybody is that we were going to continue a mask mandate,” San Diego Comic-Con International spokesperson David Glanzer told Variety Monday, when speaking of initial conversations with studios, networks and exhibitors about bringing everyone back for an in-person show. “We had that in the Comic-Con special edition, which was our smaller show that we had in November in San Diego. We had that at WonderCon, which is our sister show in Anaheim. And we...

Comic-Con will return to the San Diego Convention Center this November, marking Comic-Con International’s first in-person con since the 2020 and 2021 editions of both Sdcc and Anaheim’s WonderCon were scrapped due to Covid-19. This “Special Edition” of San Diego Comic-Con, which is being held over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, will be a scaled down event compared to the summer staple that’s drawn approximately 135,000 annual attendees for decades.
However, it’s not really the size of Comic-Con Special Edition that matters to the mini convention’s parent organization, so much as the lack of “@Home” in the event’s name.
“I think what kind of surprised all of us was how fast things started opening up. We were so used to being at home and Zooming everything and ordering groceries and food in. And then all of a sudden this year, we started seeing people venturing out a little bit,...

Theme parks are reopening, concerts are being staged, and theaters are screening tentpoles again. But one summer entertainment standard — San Diego Comic-Con — will be conspicuously absent from the upcoming season of pandemic recovery. Instead, organizers are staging Comic-Con@Home for the second year in a row, taking place July 23 – 25. Last year’s version saw lackluster reception, with none of the big announcements or panels that typically put Comic-Con on the international stage.
There will, however, be an in-person event in November on Thanksgiving weekend, but even organizers are managing expectations for the gathering, which has been purposely packaged as a “special edition.” “The show is not Comic-Con, our massive convention held in July. Comic-Con Special Edition is expected to be a show of fewer days with a smaller gathering of attendees and fans,” Comic-Con spokesman David Glanzer told IndieWire.

This summer’s edition of San Diego Comic-Con will not be held in person, as previously reported, but a live event set for Thanksgiving weekend featuring in-person festivities will be held in November. A three-day event titled Comic-Con Special Edition will take place throughout the Thanksgiving weekend, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, November 26 – 28 at the San Diego Convention Center. The news arrives as festivals begin to set in-person events as vaccines roll out, theaters are opening, and the world more or less begins to un-pause.
“It is our hope that by fall, conditions will permit larger public gatherings,” a statement announcing the event said. “Comic-Con Special Edition will be the first in-person convention produced by the organization since Comic-Con 2019, and the first since the onset of the global pandemic Covid-19. On Saturday, San Diego Comic-Con announced dates for its first in-person convention since 2019.
Since 2003, the confab has taken place in July, at the San Diego Convention Center. This year, however, a three-day “Special Edition” of the event will kick off on November 26. The hope is that by Thanksgiving Weekend, Covid conditions will allow for large-scale public gatherings of its ilk.
Per an announcement on Comic-Con’s website, the event will feature “all the great elements that make Comic-Con such a popular event each year,” while generating much-needed revenue for the organization, local businesses and the adjacent community.
“While we have been able to pivot from in-person gatherings to limited online events, the loss of revenue has had an acute impact on the organization as it has with many small businesses, necessitating reduced work schedules and reduction in pay for employees, among other issues,” said Comic-Con spokesperson David Glanzer. “Hopefully this...

San Diego Comic-Con is returning in 2021 as a “special edition” gathering. San Diego Comic-Con will be holding an in-person three-day “special edition” event over Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 26-28, 2021 at the San Diego Convention Center, the organization announced Saturday.
The hope is that by the Fall, the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic will have passed and larger public gatherings will be permitted.
“While we have been able to pivot from in-person gatherings to limited online events, the loss of revenue has had an acute impact on the organization as it has with many small businesses, necessitating reduced work schedules and reduction in pay for employees, among other issues,” David Glanzer, spokesperson for the nonprofit organization, said in a statement Saturday. “Hopefully this event will shore up our financial reserves and mark a slow return to larger in-person gatherings in 2022.”
Details about specific events, badge cost and attendance capacity are all still in the planning stages and will be announced down the line.

San Diego Comic-Con, the largest fan convention in North America, will not be held in person in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, organizers announced on Monday. Instead, the event will be held virtually over three days, from July 23-25.

Outside of 2020 being known as the year of the pandemic, it could also go down as the year events finally embraced the virtual. Virtual film festivals and conventions have existed prior to our current global health crisis, but this new normal marks the first time major events like San Diego Comic-Con have moved the physical experience of being in the room where it happens to the online sphere.
Comic-Con 2020 At Home was a gamble, and it’s one that had to come together quickly. The resulting event this week should receive some credit for existing at all — it would have been far easier to postpone or cancel the entire convention. But what transpired over the past few days can serve as a lesson to other organizations facing similar real-world restrictions. When the Covid-19 pandemic caused the cancellation of the 2020 San Diego Comic-Con, it was the first time in the 50-year history of the fan convention that it would not take place.
“It was really a heartbreaking decision,” says David Glanzer, chief communications officer and strategy officer at Comic-Con Intl., the organization that oversees Sdcc and its sister event WonderCon in Anaheim, Calif., which also had to be canceled. “People in the office were crying.”
After the March cancellation of WonderCon, which was scheduled to take place the following month, the Comic-Con International team put together a small-scale series of videos and links that Glanzer characterizes as “kind of last minute.” So when they canceled Comic-Con in April, organizers decided they had to try to salvage the event in a much more robust fashion online.
“We wanted to do something,” Glanzer says. “But then came the second half of that thought: Can we do it?...

The coronavirus pandemic did more than force San Diego Comic-Con to go virtual: It wreaked economic havoc on Comic-Con International, the non-profit responsible for staging the yearly fan-favorite event and its sister convention, WonderCon. San Diego Comic-Con typically brings 135,000 comic book fans to Southern California every July. Comic-Con International, a California-based non-profit public benefit corporation, has been putting on the show since 1970, and it needs nearly every penny it gets from the four-day gathering (plus a “preview night”) to stay above water. “We knew that by postponing the spring show and not having the summer show that, in effect, we’re going to have no income for 2020,” Comic-Con International Chief Communications and Strategy Officer David Glanzer told TheWrap. “That’s really scary. We have enough of a safety net still that we always thought that, should something catastrophic happen, we’d be able to weather it and have enough resources...

For fifty years, San Diego Comic-Con’s greatest superpower has been its ability to avoid any obstacle in its way — from inclement weather to recessions — that could have possibly led to its cancellation. But 2020 has brought Comic-Con a villain that nobody has been able to conquer: Covid-19.

At this point, it was probably inevitable that San Diego Comic-Con was not going to be happening. However, with the amount of anticipation it generates each and every single year, hope sprung eternal that the coronavirus pandemic would not affect the gathering in 2020. Well, Covid-19 has the last laugh, as today the convention’s decision makers opted to cancel it. So, Comic-Con will not be happening, at least not in the way initially intended. A summer staple, it now will have to either look towards 2021, or perhaps some point in the fall (update: it has been rescheduled for next year). Either way, July in San Diego is officially off, so make of that what you will. Comic-Con had been scheduled this year for July 23-26, with the new date now, according to sources, being July 22-25 in 2021. Much more than a comic book convention, San Diego Comic-Con is a gathering...

San Diego Comic-Con has been officially canceled. After skipping San Diego Comic-Con last year, Marvel Studios will make a triumphant return to the convention center this week with two “Avengers: Endgame”-centric panels, as well as their Saturday night Hall H presentation.
The latter experience is arguably the most anticipated of the week, especially for Marvel Cinematic Universe fans eagerly awaiting news about Phase 4.
But even the avalanche of McU announcements sure to come from those panels can’t make up for the fact that film buffs will largely be hurting for new info at Comic-Con 2019.
While Paramount is kicking things off Thursday with a “Terminator: Dark Fate” Hall H panel, Sony, Universal and Warner Bros have decided to forgo this year’s event, which just so happens to be its 50th anniversary.
And with film studios scarce this week, television is picking up the slack.

hen the first “Twilight” movie premiered at Comic-Con in 2009, it spawned protests. Multiple fans wandered the San Diego Convention Center holding signs with captions such as “Twilight has ruined Comic-Con!” One attendee, when asked by L.A. Weekly if his characterization of “Twilight” fans as “screeching girls” was sexist, countered that “girls have been making fun of fanboys for years, calling them nerdy and smelly.”
The inclusion of the “Twilight” films was a “watershed” for the convention, according to science-fiction writer Charlie Jane Anders.

A new streaming service is coming over the summer, when Lionsgate and the people behind Comic-Con join forces to create Cchq! The result sounds a lot like a former cable TV channel. Come inside for more details.
For those of you new to the cable scene, there was once a TV channel dedicated to nerds. It was known as G4. G4 housed a plethora of amazing shows like the original Japanese Ninja Warrior, X Play, and Attack of the Show. After some epic years, the channel was cancelled and changed to Esquire, which is still a good channel but anywhere near as great as G4. Now, it seems like Lionsgate and Comic-con are coming together to form something very similar.

Comic-Con HQ will launch with free beta access on May 7 with its official premiere in June leading up to Comic-Con International: San Diego in July.
The ad-free streaming service will feature an evolving slate of programming including original scripted and unscripted series, recurring daily and weekly entertainment commentary, plus unique access to a growing library of live and archival programming from their world-class events, a highly-curated selection of film and TV genre titles, and behind-the-scenes access and bonus features from genre titles that defy and define pop culture.
Seth Laderman, Evp and General Manager for Comic-Con HQ said:
"For nearly half a century, Comic-Con has served as the definitive common ground where the fans of genre entertainment come together to express their passion for comics and pop culture.
