Let’s jump back to the year 2020, infamously known now as the year of Covid-19. One Friday morning, I’m at home, doing my work, when I get a phone call from Australia, with the voice on the other side of the line being unmistakable. Jacob Elordi from Euphoria played his son. The movie wasn’t great, but Hogan himself was amazing to talk to, with him chatting with me much longer than he had to, telling me stories, such as when he was hiking in...

The effect of The Simpsons on pop culture can’t be overstated. In the early nineties, the show tapped into the cultural zeitgeist in a way few others had before. Indeed, no other cartoon show could reasonably emulate it- but Hollywood couldn’t help but try. Capitol Critters, Family Dog, and Fish Police were just a few of the shows that tried to be “the new Simpsons.” Still, the only one that really came close was ABC’s The Critic, starring the voice of Jon Lovitz as Jay Sherman, perhaps the world’s least-loved film critic and the subject of this Gone But Not Forgotten episode.
Unlike other wannabe animated hits, The Critic could boast a legit connection to The Simpsons, with it also being a production of James L. Brooks’ Gracie Films. At the same time, creators Al Jean and Mike Reiss had been showrunners on The Simpsons during...

During a recent interview with Australia’s Channel 10 talk show The Project, Australia-born Margot Robbie had a brief home-country memory slip while promoting Warner Bros’ upcoming Barbie in which she plays the titular character.
When The Project co-host Sam Taunton mentioned that the word “barbie” doesn’t always refer to the iconic doll in Oz, Robbie asked, “What does it mean here?” Shocked, others in the studio exclaimed, “A barbecue!”
Robbie blurted out “Oh!,” as she covered her face amid lots of good-natured laughter. Robbie explained her momentary lapse saying, “I’m so Barbie now, I can’t even… You’re right, a barbie, having a barbie.” She added, “I’m blaming the jet lag, by the way. Don’t blame the blonde hair, blame the jet lag.”

George Harrison steered clear of approaching other famous people. He knew what it felt like when people confronted him. If George craved invisibity he rationalized that other celebrities did too.
George Harrison | Vinnie Zuffante/Getty Images George Harrison would’ve loved to be invisible, so people didn’t bother him
After experiencing Beatlemania for about 10 years, George’s nerves were shot. He said he and the band came out of the 1960s “shell-shocked. They were lucky to have their sanity and humor intact.
For much of the 1960s and 1970s, George and The Beatles couldn’t go anywhere without being mobbed by people. “A good romp? That was fair in the films,” he wrote in his 1980 memoir, I Me Mine, “but in the real world . . . we didn’t have any space . . . like monkeys in a zoo.”
Eventually, George didn’t know whether his life was a blessing or a curse.

For the first time in the history of the Academy Awards, three women will serve as hosts of the Oscars. As officially announced on Tuesday morning by the academy – but reported in numerous outlets on Monday afternoon – actors Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes will co-emcee the 2022 Oscars when the ceremony takes place on March 27. It’s the first time as many as three people have shared the mantle of “Oscars host” since the 1987 ceremony when Chevy Chase, Paul Hogan, and Goldie Hawn were hosts.
“This year’s show is all about uniting movie lovers. It’s apropos that we’ve lined up three of the most dynamic, hilarious women with very different comedic styles,” 94th Oscars producer Will Packer said in a press release. “I know the fun Regina, Amy and Wanda will be having will translate to our audience as well. Many surprises in store! Expect the unexpected!

The late David Gulpilil will receive Aacta’s highest honour, the Longford Lyell Award, for his outstanding contribution to Australian cinema on Wednesday.
The legendary actor died on Monday, aged 68, four years after a diagnosis of terminal lung cancer.
Aacta began work on the tribute and award six months ago, with Gulpilil accepting the honour a few weeks ago from South Australia as he was unable to travel.
First presented in 1968, the award honours Australian film pioneer Raymond Longford and his partner in filmmaking and life, Lottie Lyell. Previous recipients include Cate Blanchett, George Miller, Paul Hogan, Jack Thompson and Jacki Weaver.
Aacta has said this year’s prize acknowledges not just Gulpilil’s incredible body of work, but his role in creating more diverse, inclusive, and truthful Australian stories.
A Mandjalpingu man from Ramingining, Arnhem Land, Gulpilil’s first role was in Nick Roeg’s 1971 film Walkabout as a teenager.

Nearly 20 years later, “Joe Millionaire” returns this January with a revised format that puts a twist on the original ratings smash. But at least one thing remains the same in “Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer” — and that’s the presence of a butler, assisting the Joes and driving the action. Variety can now reveal who the show’s new butler is: Actor, musician, author and celebrity impersonator Martin Andrew.
As butler, Andrew will also serve as host of “Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer” and act as a guide for the contestants. The original 2003 “Joe Millionaire” featured both a butler and a host (Alex McLeod); in this new version, Andrew takes on both roles.
“I honestly fell in love with this guy,” said executive producer SallyAnn Salsano. “It was the right fit. This guy was great. I felt like it’s definitely more integrated [than the 2003 version]. I feel like this gentleman...

Jeff Daniels and Brendan Gleeson are no strangers to the Golden Globes, drumming up an impressive seven nominations between them. Now both could be on the verge of more recognition from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for their transformative performancess on the Showtime miniseries “The Comey Rule.” The political drama, based on former FBI director James Comey‘s book, “A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies and Leadership,” chronicles Comey’s contentious relationship with President Donald Trump during his first months in the White House.
Gleeson took on the formidable task of playing Trump, a role he managed to pull off in dramatic fashion after countless parodies of the president have been ingrained in the public’s mindset (most notably Alec Baldwin‘s Emmy-winning turn on “Saturday Night Live”). The Irish actor nailed Trump’s mannerisms and speech patterns, all while maintaining a serious tone under that mound of creamy orange hair.

At 81, Paul Hogan is already at the age where anybody not named Clint Eastwood has stopped making movies, so The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee has come as quite a surprise. While the film is not an actual Crocodile Dundee sequel — it’s more of “heightened reality” film that pokes fun at Hogan and his [...]

It was 34 years ago that Paul Hogan transplanted Australian culture to America in the form of Crocodile Dundee, a movie that became a big hit and a cultural phenomenon, popularizing such Aussie phrases as “G’day mate” and “throw another shrimp on the barbie” for the American masses. Now, Hogan is back with The Very [...]

One of the perks of working a job such as mine is that, every once in awhile, you get to speak with a legit legend, or at least someone whose work has been really important to you over the years. For me, such a man is Paul Hogan. I vividly remember seeing Crocodile Dundee as a kid on VHS, and I watched it and the first sequel, Crocodile Dundee 2, over and over again. I loved Hogan, so…...

Any nostalgic affection for Aussie star Paul Hogan and his iconic Crocodile Dundee character will likely be put to the test by this ill-conceived comedy starring the now octogenarian actor. Incorporating Curb Your Enthusiasm-style meta humor, with the actor playing a rather depressed version of himself, The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee makes one long for such comparatively stellar Hogan vehicles as Almost an Angel and Lightning Jack.
Being released nearly two decades after the star’s last American film, the unfortunate Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles, this effort, directed by his frequent collaborator Dean Murphy (Strange Bedfellows, Charlie & Boots), depicts Hogan living a quiet life in ...

Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for an amusing comedy titled The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee, bringing back everyone's favorite Australian animal lover Paul Hogan - better known as Crocodile Dundee! Paul Hogan plays himself in this raucous comedy. Hogan is reluctantly thrust back into the spotlight as he desperately attempts to restore his sullied reputation on the eve of being knighted in the comedy that also stars John Cleese, Chevy Chase, Olivia Newton-John, and also Jacob Elordi as Hogan's son. For the young folks who might not know, Hogan achieved worldwide fame starring in the Crocodile Dundee movies which first opened in 1986. There were two more sequels in total, but the last one was made in 2001 and we haven't seen him since. This looks like a fun, nostalgic look back at his glory days and a lovely final send off. Official US trailer (+ US poster) for Dean Murphy's The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee,...

‘The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee.’
The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee, one of the local films to have its cinema release impacted by the pandemic, will now premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in Australia and New Zealand on July 17.
The comedy, directed by Dean Murphy, explores a fictional version of Paul Hogan as he is thrust out of quiet retirement and back into the spotlight. When his granddaughter Lucy (Charlotte Stent) finds out he’s been offered a knighthood for services to comedy and tells all her friends, Paul reluctantly accepts the offer and has six weeks to stay out of trouble before the ceremony. But wherever Paul goes, trouble follows.
Starring alongside Hoges and Stent are John Cleese, Chevy Chase, Olivia Newton-John, Shane Jacobson, Julia Morris, Rachael Carpani, Jim Jefferies, Reggie VelJohnson and Wayne Knight. Murphy, who co-wrote the script with Robert Mond, also produced the film alongside Nigel Odell.

Rebel Wilson is hilarious. This isn't news to anyone. She's best known for her thriving career in Hollywood, starring in romantic comedies like Isn't It Romantic and the Pitch Perfect franchise, but her career as a comedian started long before her debut in Bridesmaids in 2011.
In fact, Wilson was already a household name in Australia by the 2000s, and regularly appeared on one of my favorite improv comedy shows from the time, Thank God You're Here. The premise of the show was simple: a comedian walks blindly into a room of other comedians and has to pick up on the wild scenario unfolding in the room without missing a beat. She was particularly good at keeping a straight face while diving headfirst into weird scenarios. The show was as essential to Australia's early '00s comedy scene as Home and Away is to the world of Aussie soaps.

Tilda Cobham-Hervey and Unjoo Moon at the Tiff premiere of ‘I Am Woman.’
In a sign of the times for independent distributors, Transmission Films expects to release approximately nine films in cinemas this year, down from 13 in 2019.
The more selective, cautious approach to acquisitions is Transmission’s response to the tightening market across-the-board for indie films, which co-founder Andrew Mackie estimates has dropped by 10-20 per cent.
That said, Mackie and co-founder Richard Payten are very confident about the 2020 slate, not least Unjoo Moon’s I Am Woman and Dean Murphy’s Paul Hogan comeback comedy The Very Excellent Mr Dundee.
Transmission has dated Moon’s Helen Reddy biopic starring Tilda Cobham-Hervey as the pioneering Australian feminist singer, which premiered at Toronto, on May 21.

Whether it’s because of endless delays, fan demands, a director’s passion project or a cash grab reboot that seemingly no one ever actually wanted, Hollywood has produced an enormous amount of sequels to beloved films full decades after they originally hit theaters. Some of them have been wildly successful with critics and audiences, and others we’re just pretending never existed. Here are some of the sequels that took forever to hit the screen.
“Bad Boys For Life” (2020)
There had been talk for years about getting the boys back together, and the reunion finally happened this year, with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence teaming up for one last ride. This time however Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are taking over directing duties from Michael Bay.
George Miller took nearly 30 years to follow up “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” with the Tom Hardy-Charlize Theron thriller “Mad Max: Fury Road.

The Oscars producers are weighing whether or not to go host-less for the second year in a row. For now, it’s unclear where the broadcast will fall on that debate, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and broadcaster ABC are currently exploring a compromise solution, insiders close to the show told Variety.
Producers for the Feb. 9 telecast are said to be searching for the middle ground between having a single A-lister handling hosting duties and opting for no emcee at all. That could manifest as a crop of big-name talent sharing duties instead of having one star forced to shoulder the pressure of cracking jokes and welcoming a global television audience over a more than three-hour program.
This year, the Academy opted to go without a host after controversy around master of ceremonies Kevin Hart’s past homophobic remarks resulted in him stepping down. The resulting...

In a television documentary, Hogan has confessed that he is a terrible husband, which is an opinion backed up by his three divorces; two of which were from the same woman. Crocodile Dundee star Paul Hogan is getting candid about his two marriages.
The actor, 79, spoke about his life on a recent episode of ABC TV’s Australian Story where he admitted, “I’m not a great husband. I’m good early.”
Over the course of the interview, Hogan recalled how he met his first wife Noelene Edwards while working as a lifeguard at a swimming pool.
The two married in 1958 and separated in 1981, but reconciled in 1982 when they remarried. They stayed together until 1990.
“I was a massive flirt, I liked her and she liked me and we got married,” Hogan said.

Who doesn't need a pint glass of Chardonnay with a server on standby after Brockmire Season 3 Episode 2?

Peet is so good as Jules, and she matches all of Hank Azaria's comical strides step for step.

Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus may have kept their December wedding out of the public eye as much as possible, but that didn’t stop their not-so-secret newlywed status from being the running joke of the G’Day USA awards gala on Saturday night.

It’s been over half a century since gun-slinging, hi-de-ho westerns dominated the box office, when names like John Wayne, Roy Rogers and Clint Eastwood rolled off the tongue. In 2018, tumbleweeds slowly crawling across a deserted street are few and far between. Don’t get it twisted, though, westerns are no where near extinct. Some of your favorite stars have been recently seen polishing their revolvers in hot pursuit of money, power and revenge, including in this weekend’s “Ballad of Buster Scuggs” and next month’s “The Sisters Brothers.”

During their recent slate presentation in France, Warner Bros Animations unveiled plans to revive classic cartoon series Looney Tunes.
The episodes will vary between 1 to 6 minutes in length, with Wba aiming to produce 1,000 minutes in all. All episodes will be in classical 2D animation. The series features veteran Looney Tunes voice cast members including Jeff Bergman and Bob Bergen, and newcomer Eric Bauza taking the reins as Bugs, Daffy and Tweety.
