Glen Powell remained the king of grassroots publicity at an Austin, Texas, screening of his new Netflix movie, Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man.” The leading man hit the red carpet at the event accompanied by his family, but his mother and father decided to troll their son with signs directed at the press line that read: “Stop trying to make Glen Powell happen” and “It’s never gonna happen.”
It appears Powell’s parents have been paying attention to all the press attention their son has been getting over the last few years. Every time Powell appears in a movie, be it Netflix’s “Set It Up” or Tom Cruise’s blockbuster “Top: Gun Maverick” or Sony’s rom-com “Anyone But You” with Sydney Sweeney, the press can’t help but say he’s got bona fide star power and is the next big thing. James Clavell’s 1975 novel Shogun chronicled feudal Japan in the 1600s. It delved into a historic retelling of how English sailor John Blackthorne ended up trapped on the shores of Japan after an unfortunate shipwreck. Thrust into the unknown political landscape of the country, Blackthorne’s character represented one of the first instances of a troupe which has since become extremely common in Hollywood.
When a capable hero is left trapped in a completely unknown world with no help or support, they must learn on the go and do whatever it takes in order to survive. With Shogun recently receiving a mini-series via FX and Hulu, her daughter and executive producer of the project, Michaella Clavell, recently talked about the various ways in which her father’s novel inspired even projects such as Hugh Jackman’s The Wolverine and Tom Cruise’s The Last Samurai, despite being released decades earlier.

Brad Pitt has starred in several incredible movies but his zombie horror flick, World War Z, is an underrated classic that fans love. Released in 2013, it is one of his most successful movies of all time despite its moderate critical reviews. Inspired by a 2006 novel of the same name by author Max Brooks, fans have been waiting for a sequel for a long time.
Brad Pitt in World War Z
While a sequel was said to be in the works and was later canceled, there is one awesome detail about the film that fans would want to know: a clip of Zombies dancing to Michael Jackson’s Thriller. After Pitt revealed years ago that such a video exists and promised that he would show it someday, it has been long enough for Pitt to release it finally.

One Cannes ritual is IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond’s annual press lunch. IMAX is thriving in the global marketplace, with more than 1,700 screens in 90 countries, as audiences continue to recognize and embrace the global brand for giant film and digital cameras and big-screen formats. Helfand announced the company’s upcoming 2025 filmed for IMAX slate (below) while at Cannes, which he believes will break records for the company. Thanks to IMAX believer Chris Nolan‘s global blockbuster “Oppenheimer,” IMAX performed at peak capacity with over $1 billion in revenue in 2023, matching the company’s 2019 pre-pandemic record.
IMAX delivered 20% of the global box office for “Oppenheimer” — shot entirely with IMAX film cameras — and more than $190 million worldwide, making it the fifth highest grossing IMAX film of all time. IMAX also delivered 21% of the global box office for “Dune: Part Two” — shot entirely with IMAX-certified digital cameras — and over $145 million worldwide, making it the seventh highest.

The Wolf Man remains one of the horror genre's most iconic movie monsters and in 2017, there were plans for him to take centre stage in Universal's ill-fated "Dark Universe."
The idea of an McU-inspired shared world featuring these creatures crumbled when The Mummy bombed, leaving the studio with no other choice than to part ways with Hollywood heavyweights like Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe, and Javier Bardem.
There's been some chatter about Universal attempting to revive its Dark Universe, but filmmaker Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man won't be part of them.
"As an outsider, I would say that The Mummy's Dark Universe, in my humble opinion, felt like it was reactive to what was going on with all the superhero stuff - the MCU and DC universe," producer Ken Kao tells Screen Rant (via FearHQ.com). "And we know there's been a lot of talk about what...

The last couple of years haven’t been good for Henry Cavill as more than positive moments, the actor found himself in the headlines mostly for negative reasons. Keep reading to know more!
Speaking about the five recent full-fledged theatrical releases, Cavill has tasted failure on three occasions, which obviously not a good track record. The usual Cannes opening night ritual — introduce the jury and its president (auteur Greta Gerwig) who will weigh in on 22 competition titles — was co-opted by the larger-than-life presence of Meryl Streep, resplendent in white. She graciously accepted the Palme d’Or from a sincere Juliette Binoche, resplendent in red, who wrote her heartfelt tribute from one artist to another.
“You changed how women are portrayed,” Binoche said, crying. The two actresses were well-matched. And the black tie audience at the Palais gave Streep a lengthy, sustained ovation, which clearly both delighted and embarrassed her. She pretended to leave.
That ovation repeated Wednesday at the packed Salle Debussy, as Streep, a little worse for wear after debating the merits of Quentin Dupieux’s acting comedy “The Second Act” at the Cannes after-party, answered questions from Didier Allouch. “I didn’t go to bed until 3 talking about the amazing film,” she said.

Three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep revealed her admiration for actresses who move into production having achieved fame on the big screen in an onstage conversation Wednesday at the Cannes Film Festival.
“There are so many women are producing for themselves and I’m so in awe of the ones who have done that. Reese [Witherspoon] and Nicole [Kidman], Natalie Portman. Everybody has their own production company,” she said.
“I have a production company of babies and that’s what I’ve produced, but I didn’t ever want to get phone calls after seven o’clock at night. So, I never did that. I’m in awe of people who do that. There are only so many hours in the day,”’ said Streep, who had highlighted earlier that she was a mother of four, and grandmother of five.

When you think of Michael Jackson, your thoughts probably go to his iconic songs, groundbreaking dance moves, and legendary persona. But when it came to endorsements, did you know that he also had astute business sense?

Robert Doweny Jr. has been exposed to many different methods of acting over his lengthy career. From playing envious scientists to egotistical billionaires, he has certainly explored his range as an actor throughout his decades-long career. Despite this, it would seem that his latest work has taught him something that none in the past were able to.
Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man
The Sympathizer follows a nameless protagonist played by Hoa Xuande named The Captain through seven episodes. In his escape from the Vietnam War to the United States, he encounters an awful lot of American men who look like Tony Stark. It is quite a well-known fact that Downey is playing four different characters in the miniseries. It is safe to say that executing this was not easy.

Meryl Streep, the most celebrated screen actress of her time, added another prize to her collection — one of the few that she hadn’t received already — when she was presented with an honorary Palme d’Or during the opening ceremony of the 77th Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday night.
Upon being called to the stage and handed the gold-plated emblem of the city of Cannes by French actress Juliette Binoche, the 74-year-old received a thunderous 2.5-minute standing ovation from the more than 2,000 guests who packed the Grand Lumiere Theatre. Among them was Greta Gerwig, Streep’s Little Women director and this year’s Cannes jury president, who wiped away tears as Streep basked in the applause.
“You changed the way we look at women,” said Binoche, choking up with emotion as Streep comforted her.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards is taking another break. Variety has confirmed that the event, which would have normally taken place around this time of year, will instead sit 2024 out — with an eye toward returning next year, perhaps in a different, “reimagined” format.
It’s been a bumpy decade for the MTV Movie & TV Awards, which first began in 1992 (as the MTV Movie Awards). Last’s year’s event was forced to pivot to a pre-taped clip show in light of the Hollywood writers’ strike, as host Drew Barrymore bowed out and the WGA announced plans to picket the ceremony.

Twenty-five years ago, director Stephen Sommers turned a respected, but admittedly pretty dusty, Universal horror movie into a rip-roarin’ adventure. It’s fair to say all these years later that 1999’s The Mummy the best Indiana Jones movie not directed by Steven Spielberg. And yet, when Universal wanted to remake it again, they didn’t even bother to consult Sommers.
Is it any wonder, then, that 2017’s The Mummy was a colossal flop?
Talking with Sommers about the 25th anniversary of The Mummy ’99, The Hollywood Reporter asked if he had any involvement with the 2017 film, to which the director gave a short, clear response.
“No,” he answered. “Actually, I was kind of insulted because the writers and director of that Tom Cruise one, no one ever contacted me. I contact people if I was going to take over somebody’s thing.”

Released in 1999, The Mummy was a box office hit with $409 million worldwide. Two sequels followed, as did a spin-off - 2002's The Scorpion King - which put Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson on the map as an actor.
Stephen Sommers directed the first two movies, passing the baton to Rob Cohen for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Then, in 2017, The Mummy franchise was rebooted as part of Universal's short-lived "Dark Universe."
Tom Cruise took centre stage in what proved to be a rare critical and commercial flop for the A-Lister, and Sommers recently shared his thoughts on the movie while talking to The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com).
"No," he responded when asked if the studio reached out to him. "Actually, I was kind of insulted because the writers and director [Alex Kurtzman] of that Tom Cruise one, no one ever contacted me. I contact people if I...

Though Brendan Fraser-led horror comedy franchise The Mummy was seemingly put to its end back in 2008 with its third installment Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, some are still patiently waiting for the team of famous adventurers to come back to screens.
Throughout the years that passed since the latest movie hit the cinemas, The Mummy’s main cast repeatedly notes that they were more than eager to revive the fan-favorite franchise, but now, as its director finally speaks out, the chances turn out to be lower than everyone ever expected.
Back in the day, Stephen Sommers directed two of The Mummy’s films with the third one being passed on to Rob Cohen’s directorial view, yet Sommers still kept a significant position in the franchise’s future as one of the producers.

Whenever we talk about The Mummy franchise, the first character that comes to our mind is Brendan Fraser’s Rick O’Connell, set in the 1920s Egypt, the film revolves around the adventurer and a librarian who unknowingly releases Imhotep, a centuries-old mummy. The group takes responsibility as they prevent the rise of the evil pharaoh, and stop him from destroying the world.
Brendan Fraser as Rick O’Connell
The 1999 film was a massive hit as it received two more sequels, making it one of the best trilogies out there. However, in 2017, fans were disappointed when they learned that instead of getting a 4th film featuring the original cast, the $1.4 billion franchise would get a reboot. Needless to say, the film was not liked by the fans of the original series. But now, the wait for The Mummy 4 featuring Fraser comes to an end as the film’s director gives an update.

Steven Spielberg's filmmaking techniques took a large bound forward in 2001 with the release of "A.I. Artificial Intelligence." The sci-fi film, set in a near future populated by conscious androids, was a project Spielberg took over from an ailing Stanley Kubrick, who passed on it when he felt Spielberg could do it better. In "A.I.," Spielberg's photography and editing were very different from the slick, adventure films and glossy prestige pictures he had become popular making. Now everything was hazy, staid, more deliberate.
Although he had already won three Oscars (two for "Schindler's List" and one for "Saving Private Ryan") and was widely considered to be a reigning master of Hollywood's blockbuster class, Spielberg evolved. After 2001, Spielberg's career bifurcated into dispassionate effects-based thrillers wherein the filmmaker was merely experimenting, and deeply passionate political thrillers that used the politics of the past to reflect on issues of the day.

Barbie star and the the internet’s darling, Ryan Gosling, along with his arch-nemesis of the box office, Oppenheimer star Emily Blunt, joined forces to bring a new flavor to the theaters recently with their latest flick The Fall Guy. Yet, to everyone’s disappointment, the audience failed to embrace it. Despite its ingenuity, the film fell short and is now aiming to end its theatrical run, barely scraping above its production costs.

While Brendan Fraser was already an established actor in the ’90s, thanks to Encino Man and George of the Jungle, it was The Mummy franchise that propelled his career to new heights. However, working on the acclaimed adventure horror wasn’t all sunshine and roses for the Oscar winner, as his inclination to perform his own stunts would end up taking a toll on his health.
Stephen Sommers, who directed the first two Mummy features, recalled Fraser’s fearless spirit on set, which led him to nearly choke himself after a rope stunt went wrong.

Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy would’ve had a different actor playing a crucial role in the film. During a recent interview, director Stephen Sommers revealed that he tried to cast a famous Star Wars actor in the film. The character of Ardeth Bay in the film was initially written for an older actor and Sommers tried to cast Darth Vader actor James Earl Jones in the role. The director also considered Roscoe Lee Browne in the role, but both actors were busy with other projects.

Sommers then had to rewrite the character to be played by a much younger actor and cast Israeli actor Oded Fehr in the role. The character returned once again in the sequel film, The Mummy Returns, in 2001.

Directed by Stephen Sommers and starring Brendan Fraser as the swashbuckling Rick O'Connell, the film became a somewhat unexpected hit, so much so that it ended up being one of the highest-grossing films of 1999 overall. Critics were a bit mixed on it in its day. It was an action/adventure film, the likes of which Hollywood had released many times before. Be that as it may, a film designed purely to entertain (rather than to scare) resonated with audiences in a big way. It was pulpy lightning in a bottle.

Before his Stranger Things fame, David Harbour did many small and significant character roles in several films and TV series. Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds was one project he could never forget due to a major disappointment. If you don’t remember seeing him in the sci-fi flick starring Tom Cruise, that’s because he was cut from the film. 1999 was an amazing year for movies. But, among all the classics like The Matrix, Fight Club, Being John Malkovich, Magnolia, Go, Three Kings, and so many more, one that often gets overlooked is The Mummy. Originally, the summer of ’99 was supposed to be all about Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, but a few weeks before that movie opened, The Mummy turned out to be an unexpected smash for Universal Pictures, with it spawning two sequels, a spin-off movie, and (less cool), a reboot.

[This story contains spoilers for The Fall Guy.]
After the many industry-wide challenges of the last four years, The Fall Guy screenwriter Drew Pearce just wanted to make a feel-good Friday night movie, and based on various metrics, the consensus among critics and audiences is that he and the rest of his collaborators succeeded. In ten years, the social framing around the David Leitch-directed movie won’t be that it opened to $27.7 million instead of a projected $30 million. Rather, the impression of a good action romcom will remain above all.
Pearce is no stranger to IP-driven films, as he’s officially written for Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3, the fifth Mission: Impossible film, Rogue Nation, as well as the Fast & Furious spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw. That also doesn’t include all the cups of coffee he’s had with other franchises in an uncredited capacity. So, compared to the aforementioned IP, the assumption is that The Fall Guy,...

Ari Emanuel, the CEO of Endeavor and one of Hollywood’s most outspoken voices in the fight against antisemitism, will be honored at the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s National Tribute Gala.
At the annual fundraiser for Swc, which has taken place since 1977 and brings together many of the most powerful and influential people in the business, Jews and non-Jews alike, Emanuel will receive the organization’s highest honor, the Humanitarian Award, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Emanuel, 63, will be feted by colleagues — and give an acceptance speech — at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on May 22. Members of the public can purchase tickets to attend, starting at $1500 a plate, but, in a first, the event will be closed to the press.

One of the most purely enjoyable movies to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival found June Squibb on a mission for justice. Josh Margolin’s debut Thelma finds the nonagenarian actor in, shockingly, her first leading role (starring alongside Richard Roundtree in his final role) as a grandma who hunts down a phone scammer who pretended to be her grandson (Fred Hechinger). Also starring Parker Posey, Clark Gregg, and Malcolm McDowell, it’s arriving June 21 and Magnolia Pictures has now debuted the first trailer.
Jake Kring-Schreifels said in his review, “At the beginning of Thelma––a loveable, low-stakes joyride from director Josh Margolin––the movie’s eponymous 93-year-old grandmother sits on the couch with her grandson Daniel and marvels at Tom Cruise. They’re watching a recent Mission: Impossible sequel on her tiny television and can’t fathom Cruise’s running and jumping daredevil-ism at his weathered age. Thelma may live alone,...

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered if any film could capture the awe-inspiring vastness of the cosmos? Many directors have soared through the stars in science fiction, but one visionary’s belief is as enduring as the galaxy itself. George Lucas, the renowned creator of the epic Star Wars, has a deep appreciation for a cinematic masterpiece that even his own galactic saga cannot match: Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.
George Lucas [Photo: Joey Gannon/Wikimedia Commons]Lucas made cinematic history in 1977 with Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, an instant classic that catapulted science fiction to the forefront of popular culture. Despite his phenomenal success, he remains convinced that Kubrick’s 1968 magnum opus is an unmatched masterpiece, a celestial pinnacle that no filmmaker in the near future can hope to surpass.
The film starred Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood in the leading roles.
