Given what his movies cost to make, what he's paid to appear in them, and what they bring in at the box office, Vince Vaughn ranks No. 1 on Forbes magazine's Ultimate Star Payback List. The comedian's films earned $14.73 for every dollar he was paid, the magazine said. Because they took sizable pay cuts to appear together in Ocean's Twelve and Ocean's Thirteen, Matt Damon, George Clooney,Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts also ranked high on the list. However, Will Ferrell, Jim Carrey and Nicole Kidman landed at the bottom for receiving huge salaries for films that flopped. But the magazine also noted that some films would never be produced without a top movie star being brought on board with the promise of a huge payday. "When Cameron Diaz attaches herself to a script," the magazine noted "suddenly the producers can hire the hottest director and supporting actors and secure a good date for the film's release. Without a star, the same script can sit in limbo for years."

Hollywood funnyman Vince Vaughn has topped a list of stars who give their studios best value for money.
The Wedding Crashers actor came first in a Forbes magazine poll of stars who provide movie bosses the best return on their investment.
The star earned $14.73 (GBP7.36) for every $1 (GBP0.50) he was paid in his last three movies. The list also takes DVD revenues into consideration.
Vaughn came tops because, until recently, he didn't command huge sums to appear in films.
The full list of Hollywood stars who garner impressive returns for every dollar they are paid are as follows:
1. Vince Vaughn - $14.73 (GBP7.36) 2. Tobey Maguire - $13.44 (GBP6.72) 3. Julia Roberts - $13.19 (GBP6.59) 4. Brad Pitt - $12.73 (GBP6.36) 5. Naomi Watts - $12.16 (GBP6.08) 6. Forbes has calculated which stars provide the most bang for the buck, and there's a real surprise at number one: Vince Vaughn tops the magazine's Ultimate Star Payback list, which takes the performance of an actor's last three films and factors in his or her salary to determine which stars are the best values and which are the biggest wastes of money.
Last year's best value was Matt Damon, but he slipped to sixth place because he earned so much for The Bourne Ultimatum. For the second straight year, Nicole Kidman is the worst investment.
According to Forbes, which released the list as part of its Entertainment All Stars special issue, Vaughn's movies made nearly $15 for every dollar he was paid as the above-the-title star. I guess that even counts Fred Claus, astonishingly. Vaughn makes a pretty healthy salary, but overall, his movies don't cost all that much to make,

British actor Jason Statham has denied he is romancing George Clooney's ex-girlfriend Sarah Larson - insisting their recent dinner was not a date.
Clooney and Larson ended their year-long relationship in May and the cocktail waitress-turned-model sparked rumours she is dating Statham after they were pictured together in Las Vegas.
But the Transporter star insists that he has only met Larson once and it was not a romantic occasion.
He says, "I have met her. I was in Vegas with my friend and manager Steve Chasman last week and we were all at a big table. Next thing you know I'm jumping in and out of bed with her."

True Lies star Tom Arnold has urged his peers to stay out of the feud between actors unions and the movie studios - because their comments aren't helping resolve issues and thwart a strike.
The movie star insists recent public comments made by the likes of George Clooney, Tom Hanks and Sean Penn only serve to hinder union bosses as they attempt to work out new deals on working conditions and royalties for their members.
Arnold feels sure there will be no actors strike - as long as union bosses are allowed to do their job without the input of outspoken stars.
He says, "We've got to let our people do what they're doing... You know, when the actors start getting involved and taking sides and giving opinions... just let these guys at the union work it all out.
"I wish that the actors would just shut up, especially if you're filming in Rome, and that's not a slam on Tom Hanks, because I'm in his movie. I love him.
"Everything is going to be fine."

George Clooney's ex-girlfriend Sarah Larson has confirmed she was never engaged to the Hollywood actor.
The Ocean's Eleven star was forced to issue a denial in March after rumours began to circulate that he had proposed to the former cocktail waitress at his villa in Italy.
The couple split two months later, and now Larson has confirmed that although their relationship was serious, Clooney never asked her to marry him.
She says, "We were never engaged. Somebody made that up. I actually read it in a newspaper and I was like, 'I am engaged? Really? To whom?'"
The 29-year-old has also denied rumours Clooney dumped her because he feared her past would damage his career.
Larson previously worked as a cocktail waitress in Las Vegas, and photographs of her racy antics in Sin City soon turned up in the press.
But she insists those photos did not contribute to the break down of their romance.
She adds, "I wasn't shocked when those pictures taken of me in Vegas surfaced. I knew once I started dating George they'd come out. So I showed them all to him before they were published as they were posted on various websites. Most of them are of me working. I think it's funny that they are made out to be scandalous."

Hollywood star George Clooney has confessed he has no idea what his forthcoming film Burn After Reading is about.
The actor, 47, admits he is baffled by the plot of the "dark spy comedy" and when he tries to get an explanation from directors Joel and Ethan Coen, they just laugh at him.
He says, "I tell the Coens that I don't understand it and they go, 'Yeah... heh, heh, heh'. I seem to play another idiot, who is having an affair with Tilda Swinton."
But Clooney is keen to get to the bottom of the plot - the movie is due to open the Venice Film Festival in Italy next month.

Samuel Johnson said it was the last refuge of scoundrels, and if that's true, then I predict a nation-wide crime wave and a week-long run on golden toothpicks and hairless cats, because at this time of year patriotism will not be denied. Refuse to partake of -- or at least acknowledge -- it at your political and gustatory peril. With that in mind, we offer a list of films that might satisfy those on the patriotic fence, those who prefer their patriotism (and their marshmallow salad) a little bittersweet. Like Mr. Johnson, I am not an American, and much of what I know about everything, including American patriotism, I learned at the movies; these films have taught me the most about the boons and the bummers involved in loving this country.

For the many ill-wishers out there, the most disappointing thing about M. Night Shyamalan's environmental thriller "The Happening" wasn't that it was a failure, but that it wasn't a spectacular failure. Critics went in with their long knives out, only to leave shrugging that they've seen worse. Having made $59 million in theaters, it's not even the box office bomb some expected after "Lady in the Water." All in all, "The Happening" is actually pretty successful, considering it's a serious horror film about trees... that kill! In honor of that dubious designation, here's a look at the spotty history of films about murderous botanic life that have preceded it.

Film: Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! (1978)

M.O.: Produce that, for no apparent reason, become massive and murderous.
De Bello's broad comedy mocked B-movie conventions while bearing its reported $90,000 budget like a badge of honor.
