Sometimes your entire world can change in a single moment. For a young Tia Carrere’s world became more excellent one trip a local grocery store where the parents of a man who was producing a movie saw her and told her about this movie their son was shooting. This would lead Tia Carrere to land a role in the film Aloha Summer. She says she was super nervous because she had never acted before and hadn’t even thought of it as an option in her life but she did it! Ms Carrere grew up wanting to be a singer…. and she did that too!
After rocking everyone’s world in the Wayne’s World cinematic universe film franchise, Tia Carrere became a household name in the early nineties while also standing toe to toe with some of the biggest names in the business. But after a few bad turns...

What can you say about James Cameron that he hasn’t already said about himself? In all seriousness, the guy is a filmmaking legend. Starting out as a model maker for Roger Corman, Cameron worked his way up the food chain, serving as art director, production designer, and oversaw the special effects on John Carpenter’s Escape From New York before helming his 1982 directorial debut Piranha II: The Spawning. It was his sophomore feature, however, 1984’s The Terminator, that established him as one of the most exciting filmmakers of his generation.

"True Lies" is a uniquely '90s movie. The action-comedy features "Roseanne" star Tom Arnold, "Wayne's World" breakout Tia Carrere, and "Terminator" action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger, plus Bill Paxton and Jamie Lee Curtis. While Curtis is, of course, a recent Oscar winner, Paxton passed away in 2017, and the remaining lead actors haven't exactly been headlining many major blockbusters of late. It's also commonly cited as the first movie to cost over $100 million to make, a figure that feels extremely quaint when compared to today's bloated budgets.
Despite the inherent '90s-ness of "True Lies," rumors constantly persist about a sequel to the movie. Writer-director James Cameron is obviously a little busy these days with the "Avatar" sequels, but is there a chance he could ever return to the world of secret agent Harry Tasker? If not, might another filmmaker rise to the challenge and make "True Lies 2" happen? Here's everything...

Appearing on "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon" (via Variety), actor Jacob Elordi -- who plays Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola's "Priscilla" -- admitted that, prior to portraying the King of Rock and Roll, he only really knew the music legend from ... "Lilo & Stitch." Amusing as that is, truth be told, Disney's beloved animated 2002 sci-fi feature was probably how many members of Generation Z came to learn about The King's existence for the first time, some 20 years before Elordi donned his iconic bell-bottomed white jumpsuit for Coppola's memoir and Austin Butler (permanently?) altered his voice to rock out in Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis."
In case you need your memory jogged, the original "Lilo & Stitch" sees the titular alien Stitch getting a crash course in Elvis' history from his newfound companion, the oddball young Native Hawaiian girl Lilo, resulting in various montages scored to Elvis tunes like...

Disney is currently shooting its latest live-action adaptation, Lilo & Stitch, down in Ohau, Hawaii. While the cast includes names like Zach Galifianakis, newcomer Maia Kealoha, and Courtney B. Vance, a number of the animated original’s voice actors are also on the island filming smaller roles. That’s now confirmed to include Jason Scott Lee, who played David Kawena in 2002’s Lilo & Stitch.
Rumors that Lee would be making an appearance in the live-action remake have been around for a few months, but the actor himself finally confirmed it during an appearance on the latest episode of the Kyle Meredith With… podcast. What’s more, he actually spoiled his role, so consider this your warning if you want to keep Lee’s appearance a surprise.

We're starting to get more and more casting details about Disney's planned live-action/CG re-working of 2002's Lilo & Stitch and a big component has fallen into place. Chris Sanders, who co-directed the original movie, and voiced alien critter Stitch, is back to provide his odd babbling once again.
Sanders is not back in the director's chair for this one –– that duty falls to Marcel The Shell With Shoes On's Dean Fleischer Camp, but Sanders' involvement is at least a positive sign. The new film has also made room for returning cast members Tia Carrere, who voiced Nani, Lilo's older sister in the original, and who will show up as a new character called Mrs. Kekoa, while Amy Hill (Mrs. Hasagawa in the 2002 entry) will play another new person called Tūtū.

Chris Sanders is in final negotiations to voice the character of Stitch in Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Tia Carrere, who originally voiced Nani in the first film, will also play the newly-created Mrs. Kekoa, while Amy Hill will star as a new character named Tūtū.
Sanders, who wrote and directed the original feature alongside Dean DeBlois, voiced the creature, which he also created, in the 2002 Lilo & Stitch, as well as Lilo & Stitch: The Series (2003-2006). Sanders has been rumored to return as Stitch for years, but in a 2022 interview with Syfy Wire, he said he hadn’t been officially approached by the studio.
Newcomer Maia Kealoha is playing Lilo, while Sydney Elizebeth Agudong is playing Nani. Kahiau Machado was cast as David Kawena last week, but has since been recast with Kaipot Dudoit. During Disney’s vetting process, previous posts in which...

Zach Galifianakis has been cast in Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” feature, TheWrap has confirmed. We’ve heard he will be playing Pleakley, the alien character originally voiced by Kevin McDonald and animated by Ruben A. Aquino.
Dean Fleischer Camp, the Oscar-nominated director of last year’s “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On,” will be directing the new adaptation. Originally, Jon M. While technically, she’s been around without a break in her career, her parts over the last decade and more have been mostly voice work and guest appearances on television shows and in lower budget movies. Her work is always stellar and her presence online during the pandemic was a breath of fresh air. Her Aloha Friday live posts were something that kept many in a positive mood. Anyone who has met her will most likely say the same thing, she’s a joy to meet and absolutely fantastic.

When you think of the late Chris Farley, camera shy isn't what comes to mind. From his time on "Saturday Night Live" with characters like his Chippendales dancer who performed with Patrick Swayze, or motivational speaker Matt Foley who lives in a van down by the river, to his work in films like "Black Sheep" and "Tommy Boy," Farley had a wild energy and a grasp of physical comedy like no other.
Farley was a cast member on "SNL" from 1990 to 1995 and part of a group that was often referred to as the "Bad Boys of SNL" along with Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Tim Meadows, Rob Schneider, and David Spade. He never failed to get laughs and seemed to be game for anything in front of a camera. Off-camera, though, Farley struggled with drugs and alcohol and tragically died from a drug overdose in 1997 at the age of 33. His comedy,...

James Cameron is a filmmaking legend, but he's not necessarily known for his sense of humor. His straight-talking style in interviews, where he has a penchant for calling things as he sees them, will always be funny. But that doesn't always translate to on-screen laughs. In fact, it almost never does.
However, when frequent collaborator Arnold Schwarzenegger came to Cameron in the early '90s with a new idea, the director would have to sharpen up his comedy chops pretty quick. The "Terminator" and "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" star brought the director's attention to 1991 French spy comedy "La Totale!" which he was hoping to adapt. At the time, it was somewhat outside the director's wheelhouse but surprisingly, as Cameron told Yahoo! in 2019, he "got it." Arnie's basic premise was: "'What if James Bond had to go home to his wife and family?'" And Cameron was all about it.

For stunt workers and actors who dare to perform their own stunts, making an action movie can be dangerous. Doing a stunt isn't merely performing a trick; it requires putting your body on the line. Even just being in proximity on a film set that involves big explosions, high-speed chases, etc. is dangerous. Take for example director James Cameron's 1994 spy action comedy "True Lies."
The movie stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, not as the Terminator as he did in his previous two James Cameron movies, but as Harry Tasker, a husband and father who struggles to balance his familial duties with his secret life as a U.S. government agent. When he suspects his wife, Helen (Jamie Lee Curtis), is having an affair, his attempt to spice up their marriage accidentally entangles her in his ongoing operation to take down a terrorist group. Curtis is no stranger to danger; the mere...

Eugene Cordero played Casey in the first season of Loki, the Time Variance Authority employee who kept a drawer full of Infinity Stones that he used as paperweights. Deadline has reported that we can expect to see more of the actor in the upcoming second season of the series as he’s been upped to a series regular. In addition to playing Casey in Loki, Eugene Cordero also played a variant known as Hunter K-5E who appeared in the finale.
The second season of Loki was recently teased at the D23 Expo. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige welcomed Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino on stage, where they revealed that Ke Hey Quan (Everything Everywhere All At Once) would also be joining the cast. The 1990s had a plethora of action films, and movies in general, released direct-to-video. The film rental business was booming, and some video stores even hosted signing events with the stars to promote the films and their business. Direct to video action films were the most popular Dtv genre (next to soft-core erotica) and they were produced by the ton. Every week brought a new bunch of options to your local Blockbuster or Mom & Pop store. For the purpose of this list, the titles selected are fun watches even now, that were released direct-to-video for the majority of the population, and they were decently popular on the video store shelves. Without further ado, here are 5 of our favorites!

When Easter Sunday writer Ken Cheng recalls how the Universal film got to the big screen, the story feels oddly similar to the movie itself: celebrity cameos, narrative turns and lots of food.
“The movie’s origin story starts at a very Asian place — around food. Jo Koy and Dan Lin, the primary producer on the movie, just randomly met at a sushi bar, struck up a conversation and decided they would love to work together,” Cheng tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Sort of simultaneous to that, Steven Spielberg while on break from shooting West Side Story, is just hanging out in his trailer and turns on Jo Koy’s Netflix comedy special and falls in love with it.”
The screenwriter says that soon after, Spielberg emailed the entire Amblin partners and family entertainment staff, expressing his desire to work with Koy, resulting in a meeting between the three.

Even though "Easter Sunday" is the first mainstream Hollywood movie to prominently feature a Filipino family in a starring role, Filipinos have been around the entertainment industry in America for a long time. In addition to literally laying the foundation of Hollywood brick by brick alongside other immigrants, Filipino performers have been appearing in film, television, and theater for decades. People like Lea Salonga of "Aladdin" and "Mulan" fame and "Hook" star Dante Basco are among those Filipinos that have been grinding for years, but there are plenty more out there.

The movie opened in line with expectations following an aggressive marketing campaign on Sony’s part. Critics haven’t exactly embraced Bullet Train, which currently holds a 53 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences bestowed the film with a B+ CinemaScore.

So, when’s the perfect time to release a big family comedy about a big family event that happens in the Spring? Why, the “dog days” of Summer, naturally. Or at least that’s the thinking behind this weekend’s answer to the big star-fueled “action-on-the-rails” blockbuster. But what was the question, again? Yeah, so when will another “stand-up” superstar branch into the movies (most go right to TV) with an “all ages” funny flick loosely based on his life, and his sell-out comedy concerts? Move over Amy Schumer, Pete Davidson, and Kevin Hart, here comes some competition with a unique, often spicy ethnic voice. So, strap in for one wild and raucous Easter Sunday.

Though her role as Cassandra Wong in Wayne’s World was not her first role in a film, it is the role that made her famous. Tia Carrere is a name we all recognize, but it is her face we cannot forget. It’s been 30 years since she starred in Wayne’s World alongside Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, and she doesn’t appear to age in that time. She is lovely, and she’s making headlines. She’s talking about being rejected from roles, about not having it easy, and about everything in between. She’s a star, and fans want to know everything there

One of the most successful stand-ups in the country with multiple Netflix specials to his name, Jo Koy has entertained millions with tales of his Filipino upbringing. He regales sold-out crowds with stories of his delightful, somewhat overbearing mother, unpacks the intricacies of Filipino food and lifestyle, and analyzes the differences between various Asian cultures.
Now, he has lent his perspective to “Easter Sunday,” a new comedy starring Koy as Joe Valencia, a version of himself, who returns to the Bay Area for the eponymous holiday to deal with his extended Filipino family. It’s the first major studio comedy about a Filipino-American family featuring a nearly-all Filipino cast, and was shepherded to the screen with the help of Steven Spielberg, an avowed fan of Koy’s, whose DreamWorks Pictures co-produced the film.

Inside the corny chaos of the going-back-home lark “Easter Sunday,” starring comedian Jo Koy, is the point that families are messy. Of course, one doesn’t need to belong to a big Filipino clan like the movie’s onscreen Valencias to grasp that, and it’s almost quaint how that message is articulated for us at the end as some fresh bit of wisdom when, since scene one, relatives in various states of bickering aggravation have been the comedy’s go-to note.
A more lasting takeaway from “Easter Sunday” about what’s messy has to do with vehicles for stand-ups trying to break into movies. Koy, who’s been packing arenas for years with his rabbity energy and humorous windows into family eccentricities and Filipino culture, seemed as natural a fit as any to get some of his act’s lasting characters into a movie. Steven Spielberg certainly thought so...

Filipino Americans receive welcome screen representation in stand-up comedian Jo Koy’s starring cinematic debut about a family holiday celebration. As well they should, since similar films have revolved around Jewish, Black, Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Italian and families of virtually every other group you can imagine. It seems only fair that Easter Sunday should provide them the opportunity to take center stage in the sort of chaotic-family-gathering comedy that simultaneously inspires howls of recognition and cringes of embarrassment.
The film, directed by Jay Chandrasekhar (Super Troopers, The Dukes of Hazzard), revolves around Koy’s character, Joe Valencia, a struggling L.A.-based actor who’s managed to score at least one success, becoming known for the catchphrase, “Let’s get this party started!” in a beer commercial that everyone seems to have seen. The summer is having its last stand for big studio movies this weekend with Sony’s Bullet Train, the comic action-thriller starring Brad Pitt. Based on the bestselling Japanese novel by Kōtarō Isaka, the film is set on the world’s fastest train between Tokyo and Kyoto. Pitt plays an assassin who wants to retire but is roped in to get his hands on a briefcase on the train only to discover that various world class assassins are on the same train with interconnected missions. David Leitch directs, and the large cast also includes Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Brian Tyree Henry.

August is officially the last month of summer, but it’s also when schools start to reopen while others might take a vacation. Any movies hoping to make money this month are working against many other factors, which is why it’s become somewhat of a last resort for many studios. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
There have been more than a few blockbusters to open the month, including James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad” and “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” but this August, there aren’t any franchises to be found, other than movies already in theaters, like “Thor: Love and Thunder” and Warner Bros’ weaker-than-expected “DC League of Super-Pets.” [sad trombone]

It’s been 20 years since actress Tia Carrere walked the red carpet for a starring role. That was for Disney’s “Lilo and Stitch,” in which she voiced Nani Peleka. Tonight, she gets to do it for Universal’s “Easter Sunday.”
Carrere plays Tita Teresa in Jo Koy’s film about a family coming together on Easter Sunday, which features an all-Filipino cast. She calls playing Koy’s aunt in the film a “dream role.” After four decades in the industry, Carrere, who starred in “Waynes World,” “True Lies” and “Rising Sun,” has nonetheless faced her fair share of rejection for roles because she was considered too “ethnic” or “exotic.”
Carrere sat down with Variety to talk about why Tita Teresa is a first for her and what’s in store for her next music album.

Tom Cruise may have been dubbed “Hollywood’s Last Real Movie Star” by the New York Times, but Sony Pictures is betting big there’s at least one other leading man in Tinseltown who can pack theaters on the strength of his name alone.
The studio will test the power of Brad Pitt’s popular appeal as it opens “Bullet Train” in 4,300 North American theaters on Friday. The high-octane assassin thriller is projected to bring in 30 million or more in its box office debut, enough to lead domestic charts. It wouldn’t be a bad start in today’s fractured moviegoing landscape. But those projections are lower than independent box office experts were expecting for a high-profile thriller aimed at adult men.
The R-rated “Bullet Train” didn’t come cheap, so it’ll need to keep playing in theaters throughout the summer to justify its hefty price tag. Sony spent 90 million to produce the film,...

Jo Koy’s upcoming film “Easter Sunday,” out on Aug. 5, is a dream come true for the comedian in more ways than one.
For years, Jo Koy has shared stories about his family and Filipino culture in his stand-up shows, selling out arenas across the country. He has always wanted to bring that story to the big screen, but the idea was often met with rejection. Their reasoning? The story was not accessible enough.
That was until Steven Spielberg saw his 2019 comedy special, “Comin’ in Hot,” and Amblin Partners struck a deal with Koy to star in the feature film. In a Hollywood first, “Easter Sunday” features an all-Filipino cast.
“It’s our time,” Koy says, calling the film a love letter to the Filipino community. Below, Koy speaks with Variety about the scene from the film that made him cry and the importance of representation.

When Jeffrey Katzenberg was a kid growing up in New York, his father Walter, “a very successful, man-about-town stockbroker,” always carried a wad of discreetly folded 100 bills. As he moved through the day, Walter would “quietly and stealthily” slip one to people in his orbit, whether it be “a doorman, a waiter, a valet, someone standing on the street with a sign about needing help, a maid, a taxi driver, a guitarist on a corner.”
One day, Jeffrey asked his father to explain the generous habit. “He asked me if I ever looked behind us. I said, ‘No,’ and he said, ‘Well, the next time we’re out together, please look back and tell me what you see,’” Jeffrey recalled from the stage Saturday night during the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s 100 Years of Hollywood: A Celebration of Service. “The next day, I...

“Dollface” is a comedy series about female solidarity with Jules Wiley (Kat Dennings) playing the protagonist role. Produced by ABC Signature, this show has something surreal about it. It reveals what life is like for Jules, who suffers heartbreak after getting dumped by her longtime boyfriend. The character deals with the challenges of rejoining female social circles and rekindling lost friendships.
The plot takes unusual twists and turns to tell the story of female friendships in the modern world. Unlike most romantic comedies, the protagonist doesn’t seek comfort in a new love interest but aims to mend broken friendships. As a result, the storyline has a fresh take on girl power and sisterhood spiced with a bit of humor.
Film pundits and viewers showered mostly positive reviews upon the show. Some reviewers praised the main cast’s role in making the show a joy to watch. Others felt it...

Jo Koy’s comedy film “Easter Sunday” has released its first trailer, giving a first glimpse into the antics of a loving, chaotic Filipino American family and the large ensemble cast who plays them.
Jo Valencia (Jo Koy) is in for a weekend of good old-fashioned family fun when he and his son (Brandon Wardell) head home for Easter Sunday – “like the Filipino Super Bowl.” A single father and comedian, Jo is famous for his famous beer commercial tagline (“Let’s get the party started babaaaay!”). His career is a source of confusion and hilarity in his family; when he tells his mother (Lydia Gaston) he’s going to film a pilot, she thinks he’s going to play “a pilot on a TV show.” Back home, he runs into an old flame (played by Tiffany Haddish), tells jokes at church and spends time mediating feuds at various family functions,...
