Actors don't get to choose how they break out. Obviously, given the dearth of opportunities, they're lucky to call themselves "working actors" in the first place. And when you're just starting out, the last thing you should do is refuse work -- unless there's something better and fully guaranteed on the horizon.
Consider the case of Tina Louise. Born in 1934, the beautiful young woman had a multitude of fashion modeling offers in the 1950s, but what she really wanted to do was act. Louise studied under the influential acting teacher Sanford Meisner in Manhattan, and she began booking Broadway gigs in 1952 starting with a role in the Bette Davis-led revue "Two's Company." She co-starred in the hit 1956 musical adaptation of "Li'l Abner" as Appassionata Von Climax, and made a splashy film debut in Anthony Mann's comedy "God's Little Acre." Have you ever wondered what America’s sweetheart Marilyn Monroe might have looked like when she was cranky and hungry? Well, maybe not pretty. But who knew a hangry Monroe would transition into the legendary actor Willem Dafoe?
Willem Dafoe in Snickers ad | image: YouTube
A digital Snickers billboard set up on a street in New York City showed the famous scene from the 1955 film Seven Year Itch with Marilyn Monroe standing over a blowing subway grate in a white dress. But upon closer inspection, the actress suddenly looked very different.
Well, it was apparently Willem Dafoe wearing the white dress and recreating the scene for Snickers’ clever new ad for Super Bowl 50.

David Letterman is calling Teri Garr, who died Tuesday, one of his “all time favorite guests,” while Garr’s Mr. Mom costar Michael Keaton laments “a day I feared and knew was coming.” And Richard Dreyfuss, who costarred with Garr in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, remembers her as “vibrant, playful and so funny.”
The late, great Teri Garr, who brightened everything from sitcoms, variety shows, talk shows, some of the funniest movies ever made and even the occasional drama is being remembered by co-stars and colleagues today for the light she was.
“I adored Teri,” tweeted Dreyfuss. “She was vibrant, playful and so funny. Her essence created an ease in every scene we did together.

The mystery surrounding Marilyn Monroe’s beauty has captivated fans and critics for decades. As a Hollywood icon and emblem of natural allure, Monroe’s physical appearance was thought to be a reflection of her genetic beauty.
After all, Monroe was the first genuine ‘sex symbol’ that graced Hollywood. Known for playing a range of ‘blonde bombshell’ characters throughout her career, Monroe was in the height of her fame during the 1950s and the 60s. She became the top-billed actress of this period, with her movies grossing $200 million by 1962, at the time of her death.
Regardless, her natural beauty, largely considered untainted by intrusive surgeries, might not be as natural as fans presume. Evidence from auctioned medical records, X-rays, and notes from renowned plastic surgeons suggests that Monroe had cosmetic surgery on her chin and nose, revealing a carefully curated image that was crafted, at least in part, through surgical enhancements.

An icon meeting an icon—that’s what happened in 1956 when Marilyn Monroe got the oppportunity to meet Queen Elizabeth II. Although they only talked for a few minutes, the Hollywood icon made quite an impression on the late monarch. Ahead, what the queen immediately noticed about Monroe when they met and their chat about being “neighbors.”
Queen Elizabeth noticed Marilyn Monroe’s lipstick was gone
On Oct. 29. 1956, Monroe was among the stars invited to attend the Royal Command Performance at the Empire Theatre, in London, England, and meet Queen Elizabeth.

The Savoy Hotel is a five-star hotel located in London. This hotel is committed to crafting a uniquely British experience, as evidenced by the food offered and the style of architecture. Upon visiting their website, you can tell the uniqueness of their identity means alot to them: in an attempt to flesh this out, they have an entire tab dedicated to “Savoy Experiences.” While there are many things to gush about that carve out a distinct sense of self for this hotel, perhaps the most notorious and distinct thing of all is that it was the Queen’s favorite hotel. Artists and famous elites alike have also enjoyed spending time here. As one would guess, this garnered it another nickname amongst the British people: London’s most famous hotel.
That fact alone should be enough to tantalize someone into booking a stay at the Savoy, but I’ll continue to provide some more facts anyway.

Classic Hollywood and classic rock often collided in exciting ways. For example, The Eagles wrote a song called “James Dean.” A member of The Eagles explained why his band was compelled to write that song. “James Dean” became part of an absolutely massive album.
The Eagles’ ‘James Dean’ was not inspired by 1950s nostalgia
Dean was a cinematic icon who made a huge mark despite only appearing in three movies: Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden, and Giant. He tragically died in a car accident at the age of 24. His public image and untimely death gave him an image as one of pop culture’s most prominent rebels. He’s still considered one of the most famous celebrities of the 1950s, so his visage will grace the walls of 1950s diners alongside those of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley for decades to come.

In Jonathan Demme's 1991 thriller "The Silence of the Lambs," FBI cadet Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) finds several interesting and shocking clues while examining a dead body that had been fished out of Elk River in Clay County, West Virginia. Most prominently, large diamond patterns have been sliced out of the skin of the victim's back -- though to what end, Starling hasn't yet determined. More curiously, the pathologist finds a cocoon lodged in the victim's throat. It's too delicate to have fallen in accidentally, meaning someone shoved it in there deliberately.
Later, Starling takes the cocoon to a pair of entomologists (Paul Lazar and Dan Butler), hoping to learn more about it. The entomologists carefully dissect the cocoon and find it to be the species acherontia styx, better known as the death head moth (although it should have been more accurately described as the lesser death's head hawkmoth). Kim Kardashian Able ‘To Share’ Marilyn Monroe
In 2022, Kim Kardashian made a lot of people angry by wearing Marilyn Monroe’s dress. She opted to wear the iconic ‘Happy Birthday Mr. President’ dress to the Met Gala. At the time, Kim promised it was being treated incredibly carefully. She wasn’t even able to fully close the dress without stretching the fabric, so she had to wear a wrap around her back to hide the gap. This past weekend, Heritage Auctions auctioned off nearly 900 props, costumes, maps and more from Game of Thrones. There were bidding wars galore, and at the end of the three-day session, every single lot was sold for a total of $21,115,718, according to Heritage Auctions itself.
In the end, this was the most successful auction themed around a single film or TV show, and the second most successful auction in the history of Heritage Auctions. The most successful, interestingly, was a 2011 auction featuring pieces of Hollywood memorabilia archived by movie star Debbie Reynolds, which included items like the camera on which George Lucas shot Star Wars and clothing worn by Marilyn Monroe. I guess Hollywood as a whole still beats Westeros.
All in all, 32 items from the Game of Thrones auction fetched $100,000 or more. Let's look at a sampling:
Obviously, the Iron Throne commanded the highest price: $1,490,000Jon Snow's sword Longclaw was very popular.

Actor and singer Vanessa Paradis, a household name in France, captivated audiences with candid and charismatic reflections on her multifaceted career during a masterclass at the Lumière Film Festival in Lyon.
When asked about working alongside French cinema legends Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo in Patrice Leconte’s 1998 action comedy “Half a Chance,” she didn’t beat about the bush.
“Jean-Paul Belmondo was always surrounded by people; there was a lot of laughter while Alain Delon was alone – just him and his dogs,” she recalled. “But when the two of them got together, you could tell they were very fond of each other. They were happy to make this film together.”
Paradis acknowledged the unique privilege of collaborating with such iconic figures. “I knew how lucky I was back then, but today I realize it even more,” she said, adding with a grin, “I got to spend four months with them,...

With the Dceu out of the picture and James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe on the way, so seems to be a new Wonder Woman. While Gal Gadot has been widely commended for the star-studded performance she gave as Diana Prince, now speculation is rising on who could be the most immaculate replacement for her. And our top choice is nothing less than Ana de Armas.
Ana de Armas. | Credits: Ballerina/Lionsgate.
An actress with the perfect wits, charms, and acting chops required for the role, Armas inevitably checks a lot of boxes when it comes to the next likely Diana Prince portrayers. While her works are enough to show her versatility to step into a role this deep, here’s a breakdown of why we would never stop dubbing Armas one of the most perfect replacements for Gadot in the Dcu.

Lana Del Rey understands the dark, sensual side of classic rock better than just about anyone else. For that reason, she’s the perfect candidate to cover The Eagles’ “Hotel California.” Here’s a look at why she decided that’s a bad idea.
Lana Del Rey revealed what makes The Eagles’ ‘Hotel California’ difficult to cover
Artists from the 1950s and 1960s released covers as singles far more often than artists do today. For example, many of Elvis Presley’s biggest hits were covers. That era of music has profoundly inspired Del Rey, so it’s no surprise that she’s put her own spin on many beloved songs. She’s recorded tunes by Nancy Sinatra, Nina Simone, Bobby Vinton, John Denver, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sublime, Donovan, Nirvana, Marilyn Monroe, and others. However, she has yet to try her hands at any song by The Eagles.
During a 2019 interview with the Los Angeles Times,...

Not a lot of reggae sounds like Mexican music. However, Don Henley connected the two genres when he heard an early version of The Eagles’ “Hotel California” and called it “Mexican Reggae.” Here’s a look at the story behind one of the best songs of the 1970s.
How a beautiful day in Malibu birthed The Eagles’ ‘Hotel California’
Don Felder is a member of The Eagles who co-wrote “Hotel California” alongside Henley and Glenn Frey. During a 2018 interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, Felder gave fans insight into the creation of his band’s masterpiece. “I had rented a little beach house out in Malibu, and I was sitting on a couch with a pair of cut-off jeans and my kids were playing in the sand out in the front,” Felder recalled. “It was, I think, July or something, it was a beautiful Southern California day with the sun kind of sparkling on the water.

In J.M. Barrie's original 1904 play "Peter and Wendy," the fairy Tinker Bell was typically represented by a powerful spotlamp, reflected onto the stage by a small hand mirror. Her dialogue was a series of small jingle bells, shaken offstage. When Barrie adapted his play into a 1911 novel, Tinker Bell remained mute, although she was able to participate in the action more closely. In the first film adaptation of Barrie's work, Herbert Brenson's 1924 film "Peter Pan," Tinker Bell was a light dangled by a string in long shots but actor Virginia Browne Faire in close-ups, either filmed against outside sets or composited into the frame.
In 1953, directors Hamilton Luske, Clyde Geronimi, and Wilfred Jackson brought Pan to life in the celebrated animated film "Peter Pan," released by the Walt Disney Company. In that film, Tinker Bell was also mute, but could be animated as a miniature person in most of her scenes,...

Tim Allen hasn’t been making a ton of movies or TV shows lately, but he has been making a lot of headlines for being a giant asshole. There were the reports that Allen previously threw his Home Improvement co-star Patricia Richardson under the bus during contract negotiations with ABC, allegations that he exposed himself to “Tool Girl” Pamela Anderson in 1991 and claims that he was “so fucking rude” while working with Casey Wilson, which seems especially egregious because he was literally dressed like Santa Claus at the time.
So it’s not entirely shocking that a new anecdote about Allen being a dick to his collaborators just dropped.
As reported by Slash Film, director Barry Sonnenfeld’s newest book, Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time: True Stories from a Career in Hollywood, describes the process of making the 2002 film Big Trouble. The largely forgotten crime comedy starred Allen, as...

Tim Allen is a complicated figure for a lot of folks of a certain age. Tim "The Toolman" Taylor on "Home Improvement" turned him into a beloved TV dad, voicing Buzz Lightyear in "Toy Story" made him synonymous with the childhoods of a generation, and perhaps most importantly, he's Santa Claus. He's also an actor who has been very open about his conservative political beliefs, going so far as to star in the right-wing sitcom "Last Man Standing" for nine seasons. This makes him a polarizing presence in the overwhelmingly left-leaning Hollywood, but Allen's controversies are far worse than his views on the American government.
In Pamela Anderson's memoir "Love, Pamela," she noted that Allen flashed her on the set of "Home Improvement" when she was only 23 and claimed, "He said it was only fair because he had seen me naked.

Very few things can inspire the feeling of youth like a music video that immortalizes the trends and culture of the times. And they’ve come a long way from projections of still images paired with a live performance.
People were wildin’ out with their puffy leg-of-mutton sleeves in 1894, part of the decade called the “Gay Nineties” to the song, “Little Lost Child.”
We have the ’60s and ’70s to thank for advancing us from the methods of the “Naughty Nineties.” These are real names for the 1890s. Let that sink in.
(NBC, HBO, ABC, Paramount Pictures/Screenshots)
Due to its namesake, it didn’t take long before film and TV became the special sauce in crafting some visual masterpieces.
Over the years, that trend has only grown, with artists of countless genres jumping on the bandwagon.

In the 2022 HBO docuseries “The Last Movie Stars,” Ethan Hawke floats the possibility that the great Joanne Woodward’s risk-it-all role — the one that could have won the “Three Faces of Eve” star a second Oscar, had it gone differently — was playing a failed starlet who resorts to burlesque to get by. Adapted from the William Inge play “A Loss of Roses,” it was a part intended for Marilyn Monroe, who died, so Woodward stepped in and gave it her Method-acting all. Alas, the studio lost faith, recut the film and slapped a tacky new title on it: “The Stripper.”
In a different world, “The Last Showgirl” could have been such a vehicle for its leading lady, Pamela Anderson. Tightrope-walking the gossamer line between objectification and empowerment, the project lands amid a charitable reappraisal of Anderson’s career, during which a memoir, a Netflix doc and countless thinkpieces have caused...

Fans of Gilligan’s Island love to joke about the earliest version of the show’s theme song, which shouts out most of the cast before resorting to an “And the rest!” lyric to refer to the Professor and Mary Ann. In fact, it didn’t change until star Bob Denver lobbied for it to include everyone.
One cast member, however, would have preferred to keep it the original way — Tina Louise, the “Movie Star” who closed out the original version of the credits. “Part of Louise’s dissatisfaction with the series was that she had expected to be the star of the show,” according to a 1965 issue of TV Guide, as reported by MeTV.

The iconically seductive silent film star Clara Bow is being further immortalized courtesy of a festival at New York City’s Film Forum.

It’s an often-touted cliche that a great way to win an Oscar is for a performer to portray a real-life person. Cillian Murphy won Best Actor earlier this year for playing J. Robert Oppenheimer in “Oppenheimer,” Jessica Chastain took home Best Actress in 2022 for her portrayal of Tammy Faye Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” and Rami Malek won Best Actor in 2019 for his depiction of Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
It’s curious, then, that Best Actress has often been rewarded to performers playing fictional characters rather than real people. Over the past decade, 28 of the 50 nominations have been for original turns, with a whopping seven of those winning out of 10. Here’s the complete breakdown.
Two out of 2024’s Best Actress nominees were nominated for playing fictional people. The others were Annette Bening (“Nyad”), Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), and Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”). However,...

In the mid-60s, beach movies were all the rage. The super-specific subgenre was an early iteration of the coming-of-age movie, but in place of any real depth or story, its plots often focused on adolescent fun. They typically featured music, dancing, bright colors, and light romantic and comedic hijinks. At their most complex, the teen beach movies came across as a discordant mix of the sanitized family cinema of the '50s and the youth-in-revolt transgressiveness of '70s film -- slightly wholesome, but slightly countercultural.
The 1963 movie "Beach Party" is often credited with popularizing the mini-genre, and after its success, plenty of imitators were churned out in quick succession. Among them is "For Those Who Think Young," a relatively forgotten movie that's best-known as Nancy Sinatra's film debut. “Anybody got a match?” When 19-year-old Lauren Bacall cast a smoldering glance toward Humphrey Bogart in the 1944 film noir “To Have and Have Not,” she stuck the landing of her Hollywood debut with a precision few stars have achieved before or since. Chin down, eyes lifted, she eclipsed one of the most seasoned leading men in the industry. Even before she uttered one of cinema’s greatest innuendos — “You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve? You just put your lips together and…blow” — she had walked away with the film. Critics raved, hailing her as the next Marlene Dietrich and claiming she had better chemistry with Bogart than Ingrid Bergman had in “Casablanca.”

Many of Lady Gaga‘s songs became defining hits of the 2000s and 2010s. Sadly, one of the “Bad Romance” singer‘s best tunes languishes in obscurity. Here’s a look at a track with an unusual meaning and some of Gaga’s most overt Madonna references to date.
1 Lady Gaga song is partially a tribute to celebrities who met tragic ends
There were some dark undertones to Gaga’s debut album, The Fame. For cryin’ out loud, “Paparazzi” is about slaking. However, the dark elements of that record came into bloom in its companion EP The Fame Monster. Here, Gaga managed to meld unpleasant emotions like fear and sexual shame with danceable beats. In other words, we wouldn’t have Lorde or Billie Eilish without The Fame Monster.
Three songs from The Fame Monster — “Bad Romance,” “Telephone,” and “Alejandro” — became top 5 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. “Speechless” got a...

[This story contains spoilers from Those About to Die season one.]
Roland Emmerich traveled back to 79 Ad for season one of his gladiator drama Those About to Die. For season two, he has dreams of traveling back even earlier.
“We hope to do a little bit what Godfather II did,” Emmerich told The Hollywood Reporter of a potential season two. Emmerich says the show could tell dual stories using a “present timeline” and a “past timeline,” ala 1974’s The Godfather Part II, which explored the rise of Vito Corelione (Robert De Niro) via flashbacks and continued the story of his son Michael Corelione (Al Pacino) in the “present day” story.
In Those About to Die season two, the flashbacks would explore The Year of Four Emperors, which took place 10 years before the events of the show and included seismic moments, such as the suicide of Emperor Nero and the subsequent power grab amongst competing leaders...

Except for Kris Jenner, all of the KarJenner family has gone platinum. Kim Kardashian went bleached blonde overnight for the Met Gala when she borrowed Marilyn Monroe’s iconic gold dress. She has gone back and forth between dark and light and the same has gone for Kylie Jenner who has experimented with all colors of the rainbow. In an era where Instagram has allowed celebrities to curate their public images as they see fit, the word "sex symbol" has mostly been retired as anyone can be a sex symbol under the right circumstances. Early sex symbol figures like Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot have never truly gone away, with new generations continuing to discover them through pop culture osmosis or being name-checked in pop songs. In 2023, movie star, model, and international sex symbol Raquel Welch passed away, marking an end to the "classic" era of sex symbols. Her legacy as a sex symbol is well documented, with her biography by Peter Haining boasting the title "Raquel Welch: Sex Symbol to Super Star," not to mention the fact a huge poster of her from "One Million Years B.C." is used to cover the increasingly deep escape hole in Andy Dufresne's jail cell in "The Shawshank Redemption."

Actor Michael Keaton has a diverse filmography to boast of. From superhero movies to comedies to dramas, he has dipped his toes in all different pools and come out successful. But did you know that Michael Keaton is not his real name? The actor was born as Michael Douglas, but since another actor by the same name was already in the Screen Actors Guild, Keaton had to change his to become a part of it.

There was no fanfare in choosing his stage name. The actor looked at a phone directory and chose his stage name at random. But now, after decades in the industry, it seems like he wants to go back to his roots and adopt his real name alongside his stage name. Jethro Massey’s New Wave-style feature debut about a couple who meet in Paris is quirky and well-acted but strikes some peculiar false notes with Nazi gags
Here’s a dreamy, quirky, well-acted but weirdly misjudged movie that I couldn’t make friends with. It is a romance in a New Wave style, with the British-French film-maker Jethro Massey making his feature debut as writer-director in the Venice critics’ week section. The Paul and Paulette of the title hang out in Paris, have sex and conversations in a way that perhaps conjures sense-memories of Jacques Rivette. Paul, played by Jérémie Galiana, is a young American in Paris, yearning to be a photographer, but forced to take a dull job in a real estate office; here he finds himself having an affair with his demanding female boss, nicknamed “Goebbels”, one of the film’s many baffling and tonally calamitous Nazi gags.
