Fintastic Friday – Threatened Fictional Fish
International Fintastic Friday is the second Friday in May each year and was created to raise awareness and advocate for the protection of elasmobranchs. This taxonomic fish subclass includes skates, sharks, sawfish, and rays. Elasmobranchii have skeletons primarily composed of cartilage, five to seven pairs of separately opening gill clefts, rigid dorsal fins, and tiny placoid skin scales. Their numbers found in the open oceans have plunged by 71% over the past half century, primarily due to over-fishing and the loss of coral reef and seagrass bed habitat. Today, three-quarters of these species are now threatened or facing extinction. Sharks play a critical role in keeping larger predatory fish populations in check. As a result, they are crucial cogs in coral reef ecosystems, helping to keep them balanced and thriving. Conservation efforts are not just about elasmobranchs themselves, but are critical to the ocean's overall well-being.
