IMDb Staff Picks: Movies We Can’t Miss at the 2023 MAMI Mumbai Film Festival1 of 11
India loves its weddings. But not all Indian weddings are the ostentatious, glitzy affairs where guests in designer-wear break out into choregraphed flash mob dancing. With Sthal (A Match), Jayant Digambar Somalkar, a debutant director, explores weddings as they happen in rural India. Steeped in realism with most of the cast facing the camera for the first time, this is the warts-and-all take on arranged marriages as an institution that I have been missing on screen. That it world premiered at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival and won the NETPAC award is only one more reason to add it to one's Watchlist. - Kalpana Nair
