- StarsKenneth ColleyTim Pigott-SmithGeraldine JamesWorshipped as a national savior, Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson masterminded the naval victories that thwarted Napoleon's plans to invade Britain. Yet, in the midst of public adulation, rumors swirled about his private life. Nelson took a friend's wife as a mistress and even fathered a child by her in secret. Starring Kenneth Colley (Monty Python's Life of Brian), Geraldine James (The Jewel in the Crown), and Tim Pigott-Smith (V for Vendetta), this lavish historical drama examines Nelson through the eyes of four people close to him: his wife, who feels bitter and betrayed but ultimately loving; his friend, who helplessly loses his wife to a hero; his captain, who admires Nelson's bold leadership but disdains his lifestyle; and an ordinary seaman, who turns to his commander for inspiration while facing death. What emerges is an unconventional portrait of a complex figure and a study in the effects of fame. Seen on Masterpiece Theatre.

- DirectorViggo LarsenStarsAugust BlomGudrun KjerulfViggo LarsenOpening in the lodgings of the Lieut. Buonaparte, then an impecunious young officer, the subject soon introduces us to Madame Sans Gene, Who brings Napoleon his washing and submits to a kiss. Later, in the laundry itself, her rescue of Count Neupport, whom she assists in a wounded state to her own bedroom, is shown. The girl's lover, Sergeant Le Fevre, forces an entrance, but lets the prisoner go to shield his sweetheart. These scenes all contain much effective acting, as does a later one in which the sergeant is instrumental in saving Napoleon's life. The latter has taken the place of a sentry who has fallen asleep at his post and resting on the latter's ride is waiting for him to wake, when a number of Royalist soldiers attack him. Le Fevre, on his rounds, comes to the rescue and secures a pardon for the sentry and promotion for himself. Le Fevre's rise is rapid. Made a field-marshal, he, after the battle of Danzig, is made a duke for his gallantry in saving the colors. At this stage we are given another glimpse of the heroine, who follows her husband's fortunes in the camp. This period introduces some good scenes of camp life, the council of officers, etc. Back at Paris, we find Napoleon in his private cabinet, unaware of an intrigue in progress in which the Empress is concerned, having for its object the escape of Count Neupport, who is entrusted with a letter to the Emperor of Austria. The Count, however, is discovered in the Court disguised, by Napoleon, and captured and condemned to death. Meanwhile, the Duchess of Danzig has visited Napoleon and laughingly shown him the unpaid laundry bill, and the Little Corporal has shown that he is not insensible to her charms. The Duke and Duchess hear of the capture of the Count and bring about his escape, the nobleman being conveyed through the lines in a military cloak and hat. Then they repair together to Napoleon and confess what they have done, to be magnanimously forgiven by the Emperor, after a natural outburst of anger, when he remembers that he owes his life to the man.

- DirectorCharles BrabinEugene NowlandStarsMinnie Maddern FiskeShirley MasonYale BennerBecky, a child, is left an orphan by the death of her father and is consigned to the tender mercies of the Misses Pinkertons, who conduct a fashionable school for girls. Becky feels keenly the semi-charitable nature of her life, and, when kindly-hearted Amelia Sedley invites her home, she eagerly accepts. It is then that Becky, the child, becomes Becky, the adventuress, cold, calculating and selfish. With the entrance of Becky into the peaceful Sedley home comes misfortune. Sedley goes bankrupt. Old man Osborne promptly breaks the engagement between Amelia and his son, George. Becky lays her traps for Joseph Sedley, Amelia's brother, and nearly succeeds in her designs on that self-satisfied young man. Urged by his faithful friend, Captain Dobbin, George marries Amelia. This change throws Becky into new surroundings. She goes to Queen's Crawley and enters the most active sphere of her existence. Her adventures with old Pit Crawley, her marriage to Rawdon Crawley, their poverty Becky's flirtation with Lord Steyne and her subsequent separation from Rawdon, the Battle of Waterloo and the death of George Osborne are all faithfully portrayed incidents of Thackeray's novel.
- DirectorCharles KentStarsHelen GardnerWilliam V. RanousJohn Bunny(Reel One) Amelia Sedley, accompanied by Miss Becky Sharpe, returns from boarding school. Becky is a natural born flirt. Bashful Joseph Sedley falls desperately in love with her. He takes her to Vauxhall Gardens, where he makes an ass of himself, is very much ashamed, and refuses to keep his appointment with Becky the next day, sailing for Scotland to escape her wiles. Amelia, with her gentle sweetness, hands Becky a letter from Sir Pitt Crawley, requesting her to repair to Queen's Crawley at once. The next morning, bright and early, she takes her departure to enter Sir Pitt's household as a governess, where she meets Rawdon Crawley, youngest son of Sir Pitt, who falls captive to her charms, bringing upon himself the displeasure of the whole Pitt family. He, notwithstanding, marries Becky. (Reel Two) After their marriage, Becky Sharpe and Rawdon Crawley take up elegant lodgings at Mayfair. Rawdon, who is a captain in the English Army, is resplendent in his uniform. They are visited by their military friends; Captain Dobbin is there with Amelia Osborne and her husband, Lieutenant Osborne, who is fascinated by Mrs. Crawley. A week later they sail for Brussels. At Brussels they attend a ball given by the Duchess of Richmond, at which Becky meets the Marquis of Steyn and where they receive notice of the Battle of Waterloo. All is excitement and the others are soon on their way to the field of action, where Lieutenant Osborne is killed. A month after the battle, Becky Crawley turns to the ensnaring of Lord Steyne, who with crafty and villainous intent, lays siege to the overthrow of Captain Crawley in order that he may continue his alliance with his wife. Crawley gets heavily in debt at the gaming tables of Lory Steyne, is unable to pay and the unscrupulous Steyne throws him into prison. (Reel Three) Colonel Rawdon Crawley writes a note to his wife to raise money to secure his release. She replies falsely that she is sick but will implore Lord Steyne to show Rawdon leniency, signing herself, "Yours affectionately, Becky." Colonel Crawley, in despair, sends to his brother for assistance. Pitt hastens to his brother's succor. Rawdon immediately goes to big wife's apartments and finds her with Lord Steyne, whom he throttles, and leaves Becky forever. Major William Dobbin marries Amelia Osborne. Amelia and Major Dobbin learn of Becky's downfall. They visit her in her misfortune and find her dissipated but unconquered. She refuses aid from Mr. and Mrs. Dobbin and is left by her friends to her own waywardness.

- DirectorJustin HardyStarsFrancis MageeRoger DaltreyJohn CastleThis film takes a fresh look at the Battle of Trafalgar through the eyes of the HMS Victory's surgeon and his medical team that supported the brutal tactics leading to Nelson's victory over the French navy. However, there was one patient they did not save.
- DirectorJ. Searle DawleyStarsSydney BoothHerbert PriorJames GordonWe show Lord Nelson leaving the admiralty room where he makes his famous speech and then introduce him with his captains giving the details of that wonderful plan of attack which was carried out to the letter at Trafalgar, the inspirations of the captains and their enthusiastic toast. We are then carried along to the day before the battle when the men are writing their last letters home. Here a beautiful scenic and photographic effect is introduced as the vision of the sweetheart of one of the lieutenants fades into view. This gives an opportunity to introduce that famous episode of the letter in which Lord Nelson called back the mail ship for a single message and which is endeared to the hearts of all those who sail the sea. We are then carried along to the morning of October twenty-first, Eighteen Hundred and Five, when the fleet of the enemy is sighted. The decks are cleared for action and the hoisting of the colors is portrayed with all the solemnity of the occasion before entering the battle. The correct incident of the hoisting of the famous signal "England expects every man to do his duty" is splendidly portrayed and carried out in every detail, and we note the pathetic touch in Nelson's life in bidding farewell to his captains having at the time a presentiment of his own death. We now get to the little human touch in his life and learn the true character of the man, for, in his last entry in his diary before the battle, he makes peace with his maker. And now we come to that wonderful spectacular picture of the real battle of Trafalgar. We see the ships in action, the firing of the guns, the ships caught on fire and then the camera switches to a close view of the deck of the Victory where human life is sacrificed by the hundreds, the fighting top of the Redoubtable, the fatal shot and Nelson's fall. We then see that wonderful character in his death, the solemnity, the beauty and the pathos of it all being carried out by the Edison players in all its grandeur; his farewell to Captain Hardy, the last kiss, the news of the victory and finally his death.

This is the prepossessing setting of a comedy that takes us to Zvestov, a picturesque Moravian village where the men like to re-enact a famous Napoleonic battle. They do it with such enthusiasm that they almost cause a tragedy and turn the romantic wedding of Tomas and a beautiful French girl, Claire, into bloodshed. In the end, everything is resolved with common sense and humor, but mostly with ordinary happiness and love, which drowns out all the sabre-rattling and is more powerful than dreams about fame.

- DirectorEdward L. CahnStarsCarey WilsonSergei ArabeloffNaomi ChildersThis MGM short film questions whether Napoleon Bonaparte died on the island of St. Helena in 1821 as recorded in history. It is noted that for many years Napoleon employed a look-a-like by the name of Francois Eugene Robeaud. This allowed the Emperor to work on matters of State while Robeaud attended public functions. There are several other anomalies including Robeaud's sudden disappearance and his family's acquisition of wealth; the fact that Robeaud is also recorded as having died on St. Helena; and lastly the presence in Italy of an optician who bore an uncanny resemblance to Napoleon.
- DirectorViggo LarsenStarsAugust BlomGudrun KjerulfViggo LarsenAfter the united powers of Europe had been successful in defeating Napoleon's vast armies, the great Emperor himself was taken prisoner and sent into exile to the Island of Elba, on the coast of Corsica. His loyal friends in France, however, would not rest, and were untiring in their efforts to liberate the Emperor from his prison. The first part of this film depicts a meeting of a few of these friends and supporters, who formulate a plan. A letter is written to Napoleon, explaining that a messenger will bring him all particulars and plans of a plot to liberate him. A young officer is elected to make the dangerous journey to Elba, to carry to Napoleon the message from his friends. But these friends did not count on the enemies which every great man has, and did not observe that one of them attended their eventful meeting. The traitor informs the police, whose assistance he obtains, and together they go in pursuit of the messenger. Tired and exhausted, the messenger finds rest for a night at a small inn on the road, but not long after his arrival there his two pursuers arrive also, and over a glass of wine discuss how they can best capture the messenger. The daughter of the innkeeper, a great admirer of Napoleon, overhears the discussion of the two men, and immediately warns the messenger, who has just sufficient time to ride away, hotly pursued by the enemies. Fortunately, he soon reaches a farm house on his way, and induces the farmer to give him other clothes. Hastily changing his dress, and with the assistance of the farmer, who shows the pursuers the wrong way, he manages to get to the frontier. He arrives safely at the coast, from which he is to take the boat to Elba. Before he lands on the coast of the island, his small craft is demolished by the waves, and he is compelled to swim through the foaming sea to his destination. But even here, on this lonely island, he is discovered by a sentry, who uses his rifle effectively, and with a bullet-wound in his shoulder the poor messenger turns back into the water, pretending to be killed. Swimming to a more secluded spot along the coast, he sees the figure of his beloved Emperor standing by the water, looking sadly in the direction of his country. Trembling with excitement, the brave messenger approaches Napoleon and delivers to him the message. Napoleon, deeply moved by the loyalty of his friends, thanks the messenger in kind words, and embraces him, to show his deep and sincere gratitude.

Sporadic shots in the distance testimony that there is some opposition conducted by the local men, ambushed in the hills, against the retreating Napoleonic army. The village, a mere handful of houses roughly built of granite, is deserted. Well, almost. There are the two young French soldiers who have deserted their army, and decide to vent their anger, and hunger, on the chickens and sheep without a shepherd that run about in the main street. A short widow, hidden in the church, sees the rude behaviour of the two miscreants towards the icon of Santiago, of which they break the head off. She could prevent them from desecrating the church wine, by instructing her teenage son to bury the bottles in the cemetery, aided by two younger children. Then, she shows herself at the tavern, and induces them to feel confident to the point of drinking a little too much. When they try to have their way with her, and even with her son, the good Christian feels no qualms to dispatch them with a flick-blade. When the peace returns to the village, she shows the priest where she buried the head of saint Inacio - and the French soldiers' bodies.
