- DirectorGina Prince-BythewoodStarsCharlize TheronKiKi LayneMatthias SchoenaertsA covert team of immortal mercenaries is suddenly exposed and must now fight to keep their identity a secret just as an unexpected new member is discovered.I enjoyed the overall pace and storyline. Charlize Theron was amazing and I was pleasantly suprised by Kiki Layne. I hope we'll get to see a sequel.
- DirectorAl CampbellAlice MathiasStarsSamuel L. JacksonHugh GrantLisa KudrowIn mockumentary format, characters discuss events of 2020 with a mixture of true information and satire. The overarching topic is the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in the US and UK.Ah yes, who would have thought that a year could be SO horrible that someone would make a whole TV special dedicated to it's departure? Not me.
- DirectorWilliam LauStarsKelly SheridanMelissa LyonsJulie StevensInspired by Mark Twain's fascinating novel, Princess Anneliese finds an unexpected friendship when she meets her humble look-alike, Erika. Will the Princess and the Pauper thwart the plans of the Queen's scheming advisor, Preminger?I have watched most of the older Barbie movies in the beginning of the year (lockdown and stuff) and I enjoyed them all. Princess and the pauper stood out, though, with it's weirdly detailed storyline and GREAT villain.
- DirectorJ BlakesonStarsRosamund PikePeter DinklageEiza GonzálezA crooked legal guardian who drains the savings of her elderly wards meets her match when a woman she tries to swindle turns out to be more than she first appears.Rosamund Pike did it again - she played a woman that you love, fear and hate at the same time. What an inspiration!
- CreatorJac SchaefferStarsElizabeth OlsenPaul BettanyKathryn HahnBlends the style of classic sitcoms with the MCU, in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision - two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives - begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems. This show is A LOT better than I expected. And I didn't expect a lot, considering Disney could literally s*it anything put and we'd all watch it. It's not finished yet, but I'm sure that it'll stay on this list even after the season finale.
- StarsChris DiamantopoulosKaitlyn RobrockBill FarmerMickey and his best pals - Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy and Pluto - embark on their greatest adventures yet, navigating the curve-balls of a wild and zany world where the magic of Disney makes the impossible possible. This show is so chaotic, I can't believe Disney approved this. The animation is amazing (sometimes even beautiful) and the jokes are funny. The episodes are short (no longer than 5 min) but they fit in so much, it's incredible! I hope this show never ends tbh. Probably my greatest discovery in 2021 yet.
- DirectorJason HowdenStarsDaniel RadcliffeSamara WeavingNed DennehyA guy relies on his newly-acquired gladiator skills to save his ex-girlfriend from kidnappers. It feels like I have waited a lifetime to watch this movie (ever since I saw THAT picture of Daniel Radcliffe). Loved the direction and photography. Dialogue was a bit wanky SOMETIMES, but other than that an amazing movie.
- DirectorChung-Hyun LeeStarsPark Shin-hyeJeon Jong-seoKim Sung-ryungTwo people live in different times. Seo-Yeon lives in the present and Young-Sook lives in the past. One phone call connects the two, and their lives are changed irrevocably. This movie kind of introduced me to Korean movies and it blew me away. I was laughing, crying and hiding behind my blanket throughout the whole thing.
- DirectorMichael RiandaJeff RoweStarsAbbi JacobsonDanny McBrideMaya RudolphA quirky, dysfunctional family's road trip is upended when they find themselves in the middle of the robot apocalypse and suddenly become humanity's unlikeliest last hope.I love animated movies and I love when creators try something new. I liked this family adventure and couldn't stop laughing at times.
- DirectorMichael MatthewsStarsDylan O'BrienJessica HenwickMichael RookerSeven years after he survived the monster apocalypse, lovably hapless Joel leaves his cozy underground bunker behind on a quest to reunite with his high school sweetheart. Finally a movie worthy of Dylan O'Brian. Hopefully we get to see him more in roles where he can shine in the future.
- DirectorOlivier NakacheÉric ToledanoStarsFrançois CluzetOmar SyAnne Le NyAfter he becomes a quadriplegic from a paragliding accident, an aristocrat hires a young man from the projects to be his caregiver.I'm late to the game, as always, but in the middle of 2021 I randomly decided to start watching Imdbs Top 100 - and I only managed to watch this one and The Usual Suspects (not on this list because I already knew the ending). Definately not a movie I would have watched on my own, but I'm glad I did.
- DirectorCate ShortlandStarsScarlett JohanssonFlorence PughDavid HarbourNatasha Romanoff confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises.Only the SECOND movie I could watch in cinemas after the pandemic started - how crazy is that?? Obviously, it had to be a Marvel movie because they are the only ones still pumping out movies into the theatre. I enjoyed it.
- CreatorMichael WaldronStarsTom HiddlestonOwen WilsonSophia Di MartinoThe mercurial villain Loki resumes his role as the God of Mischief in a new series that takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.”Probably Marvels best show yet.
- DirectorMike FlanaganStarsEwan McGregorRebecca FergusonKyliegh CurranYears following the events of The Shining (1980), a now-adult Dan Torrance must protect a young girl with similar powers from a cult known as The True Knot, who prey on children with powers to remain immortal. It was long at times and the last act was a bit...hm, you know? But I still enjoyed it a lot. Loved the acting and overall story.
- CreatorBobs GannawayStarsBilly CrystalBen FeldmanMindy KalingMechanic Tylor Tuskmon has big dreams of working his way up the ranks to the Laugh Floor at Monsters Inc.As an avid fan of the original movie, I always kind of craved for another one. A show is actually the perfect way to satisfy that craving. Although the story doesn't offer much (it is a show for kids after all), it was nice to see familiar characters again.
- DirectorLeigh JaniakStarsSadie SinkEmily RuddRyan SimpkinsShadyside, 1978. School's out for summer and the activities at Camp Nightwing are about to begin. But when another Shadysider is possessed with the urge to kill, the fun in the sun becomes a gruesome fight for survival.I liked the whole trilogy, but couldn't decide which movie was my favorite. I picked the second one, mostly because of the setting and because after a somewhat confusing ending in the first movie, we finally got SOME answers. Also, it had a lot of blood and more interesting kills.
- DirectorTaika WaititiStarsRoman Griffin DavisThomasin McKenzieScarlett JohanssonA young German boy in the Hitler Youth whose hero and imaginary friend is the country's dictator is shocked to discover that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home.Another movie which premise I already knew beforehand, so some moments didn't have the intended impact, but I still really, really liked it. And that means a lot coming from someone from Germany, alright?
- DirectorEnrico CasarosaStarsJacob TremblayJack Dylan GrazerEmma BermanOn the Italian Riviera, an unlikely but strong friendship grows between a human being and a sea monster disguised as a human.I feel like Pixar movies can't do any wrong, can they?
- DirectorCraig GillespieStarsEmma StoneEmma ThompsonJoel FryA live-action prequel feature film following a young Cruella de Vil.For some reason I had very low expectations for this movie, maybe because I didn't like the over-the-top trailer. I'm still not the biggest fan of Emma Stone in the role and felt like she sometimes treated the character like a caricature, but other then that I really enjoyed the storyline, tone and most of the clothes.
- DirectorJosh BooneStarsMaisie WilliamsAnya Taylor-JoyCharlie HeatonFive young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.I literally wasn't interested in seeing this movie ever, but it was free to stream, so I did anyway and I was pleasantly suprised. If you take away the mention of mutants though, this could be a stand-alone-story, so maybe that is why I liked it? It has it weaknesses obviously, but honestly it's not as bad as people made it out to be.
- DirectorCedric Nicolas-TroyanStarsMary Elizabeth WinsteadWoody HarrelsonMiku MartineauA jaded assassin assigned to target a yakuza clan has 24 hours to find out who poisoned her and get vengeance before she dies. Not a big fan of the side character and the twist wasn't a twist, but Winstead did a GREAT job as this new action hero and the fight scenes were fantastic.
- DirectorTanya WexlerStarsZoey DeutchJai CourtneyJudy GreerIn the underworld of debt-collecting, homegrown hustler Peg Dahl will do anything to escape Buffalo, NY.I wonder if I ever get tired of seeing Indie movies getting carried by Zoey Deutch's performance, but I'll probably get never tired of seeing her, so I'll continue watching them.
- CreatorJohn HoffmanSteve MartinStarsSteve MartinMartin ShortSelena GomezThree strangers - who live in the same New York City apartment building and share an obsession with true crime - suddenly find themselves embroiled in a murder. The best show of the year for me. I usually like to binge watch shows season by season, but I'm literally watching this one episode by episode and I can't wait for the next one.
- StarsRaini RodriguezAndre RobinsonScott AdsitFollow Hansel and Gretel as they walk out of their own story into a winding and wickedly witty tale full of strange -and scary- surprises. As the name suggests, a grimm story, that suprised me from the first episode. Definately a certain Disenchantment-vibe (anybody else watched that show???), but for kids.
- StarsLee Jung-jaePark Hae-sooDylan BesseauHundreds of cash-strapped players accept a strange invitation to compete in children's games. Inside, a tempting prize awaits with deadly high stakes: a survival game that has a whopping 45.6 billion-won prize at stake.I was one of the last people who finally watched Squid Game and I'm a bit mad, I didn't start sooner.
- DirectorJon WattsStarsTom HollandZendayaBenedict CumberbatchWith Spider-Man's identity now revealed, Peter asks Doctor Strange for help. When a spell goes wrong, dangerous foes from other worlds start to appear, forcing Peter to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.I had the pleasure to watch this movie in a cinema (Corona regulations concerning cinema visits are still very strict in Germany), and I enjoyed it very mich. It was mostly fan service, sure, and only after seeing it and looking through some reviews online I realized how much it meant for the fans. While I'm not the biggest Spiderman fan, I still would say that this is the best Spiderman movie so far.
- DirectorMarco BrambillaStarsSylvester StalloneWesley SnipesSandra BullockA police officer is brought out of suspended animation in prison to pursue an old ultra-violent nemesis who is loose in a non-violent future society.A bit random, but this movie was one of the last "new" (for me) movies I saw in 2021. I never saw Wesley Snipes in a role like this (he was amazing) and Sylvester Stallone...well, let's just say, that I get now why he was considered a **x-icon in the 90s. I was gushing over him for the entiery movie. Also, Sandra Bullock is in this? So weird for some reason.
